Eat More Scarborough x Nuit Blanche
Tumblr media
On October 5th, participants from our Healthy Arts for Seniors program had the opportunity to attend the Eat More Scarborough Midnight Food and Art Tour, free of charge, generously supported by Scarborough Arts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This tour was designed to be accessible and inclusive for our senior participants, ensuring that no one was left behind. Foodie-in-Chief, Howard Tam and his team went above and beyond with helping us provide mobility assistance throughout the evening.
Tumblr media
The tour took us on an exciting journey through Scarborough’s globally celebrated culinary scene that has been attracting Michelin stars, chefs and content creators from around the world. Scarborough’s plaza culture, which has evolved into a microcosm of late-night street eats reminiscent of bazaars in South and East Asia, was the perfect backdrop. From filling bags with fragrant herbs and spices at markets like Ghadir, to enjoying Paratha Rolls and creamy cups of Karak Chai, our senior participants indulged in diverse, flavourful cuisines and shared these moments with family members and friends who came along for the ride.

After several delicious stops, the group convened in a plaza parking lot, comfortably seated in camping chairs with cozy blankets, to enjoy desserts and bubble teas. But our night didn’t end there. We piled back onto the bus and made our way to the Aga Khan Museum for Nuit Blanche, where participants were delighted to explore various art installations and community engagement spaces.
Tumblr media
The success of this tour is a testament to our commitment at Scarborough Arts and Eat More Scarborough, to prioritize engagement, accessibility, and inclusion. We are especially focused on solving the issue of seniors’ isolation by providing opportunities for them to step outside their comfort zones and engage with the public sphere. From creating access to culturally enriching experiences to addressing the specific mobility needs of seniors, this program reflects our belief: community is at the heart of everything we do. Together, we are putting resources, care and joy back into our communities.

(this is based on the comics between 1960 and 1985) 🙇🏻‍♀️
I found it fun to do and I thought it might give ideas to the struggling fanfiction author (and I don't even have the same opportunity because I would also like to start writing some 🙇🏻‍)
I kind of abbreviated some of the information because I didn't really know how to word it ಥ‿ಥ
I'm not sure it's all true because the comics I'm basing it on are in English...I have difficulty understanding English 🙇🏻‍♀️ With that, I wish you a good day 🥲

Dawn and Golden Hour
This is what I set out to do two weeks ago, but the fog had other ideas.
I got to Downtown and the West End Overlook about an hour before sunrise, or the start of dawn. TIL there's three different dawns. I'm starting to take photos at the beginning of 'astronomical dawn.'
Tumblr media
This one is wallpapered for your enjoyment.
Tumblr media
And a few more. I swapped out between the 28-70mm f/2.8D and the 80-200mm f/2.8D here. I decided today's challenge would be to level the camera, keep the fountain center of the shot, and compose just wit the zoom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on to the Duquesne Incline overlook as dawn shifts to sunrise and the beginning of the Golden Hour. The 80-200mm lens isn't all that viable if I want to get the traditional DOWNTOWN shot. These are all the 28-70mm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, camera is level, composing with just zoom and pan.
As previously, the autofocus started misbehaving again. I may need to have that lens serviced. So this last one at this spot is with the nifty 50mm f/1.8D.
Tumblr media
FYI: everything to this point has been on the tripod at aperture priority f/5.6, ISO 200.
And finally, I move to the Grandview Ave. overlook. I've got the 80-200mm back on, and gone freehand at f/2.8, auto ISO with a minimum shutter speed of 1/125. That's about as slow as my 55 year old hands can do without camera shake. We're now well into Golden Hour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hardest part is it's an hour's drive each way to get here. So I spend more time traveling than I do taking the shots.
And the traditional shoutout to @sirfrogsworth for the inspiration.

Rogues Meme #1

Now I kinda think I should have used Mick or Digger instead of Len. Mick for his emotional intelligence and Digger for his nonchalant reaction

Scarborough Arts and Best Buy Canada: Bridging the Digital Literacy Gap for Seniors in BIPOC Communities
Scarborough Arts recently collaborated with Best Buy Canada to bring an exciting new initiative to the seniors of Scarborough’s BIPOC communities: a comprehensive digital literacy training session featuring Apple iPads and Apple Pencils. This partnership aimed to empower older adults by providing them with essential tools and skills to enhance their creative projects, and it delivered more than just technological know-how—it offered newfound confidence in navigating the digital world.
For many seniors, the digital divide can feel daunting, especially in a world that increasingly relies on technology for communication, creativity, and accessing important resources. This initiative was designed to bridge that gap by offering accessible, hands-on training tailored to the unique needs of older adults. Participants were introduced to the functionalities of Apple iPads and Pencils, which were provided during the workshop and on loan for the entire Golden Lens: Wisdom Through The Ages 2024 program. They learned basic skills such as navigating apps and using creative tools like Freeform and CANVA.
The seniors—many of whom are artists, storytellers, and creatives—left with a toolkit of new digital skills to enhance their creative work. Whether they were exploring digital photography, designing visual artwork, or even recording oral histories, these seniors are now better equipped to expand their creative horizons and share their stories in the digital age.
The importance of digital literacy for seniors cannot be overstated. As our world continues to shift online, seniors from underrepresented communities are at risk of being left behind. By understanding the basics of digital tools, older adults not only stay connected with their families and communities but also gain a sense of independence and agency in an increasingly tech-driven society. This program gave them access to ongoing resources and support from Best Buy and Scarborough Arts, ensuring that their learning didn't stop at the end of the workshop.
Scarborough Arts and Best Buy’s partnership is a meaningful step toward fostering inclusivity and accessibility in the digital age, ensuring that all generations, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to thrive creatively and stay connected. As the program continues, these seniors will undoubtedly find new ways to integrate technology into their art, stories, and everyday lives.
In today’s world, digital literacy is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Thanks to initiatives like these, seniors in Scarborough’s BIPOC communities are being armed with the skills, confidence, and support to continue creating, learning, and connecting well into the future.
