I've been waiting to respond since you made that post mocking us for wanting problematic characters banned from your polls because apparently you are not taking legitimate criticism of anime seriously. Because it is full of poor representation of minorities and lgbtq+ and you and all of your followers are laughing about it like it's nothing.

I will start with Yamato because everyone acts like one piece even though it's so full of misogyny. Having a trans character is amazing when I don't even think Yamato is actually trans. I'm pretty sure it's a translation error and everyone has latched on to it. So again that is not good representation if it's not confirmed representation and even if it was confirmed, it's not good representation. Yamato because of the one piece art style by default Yamato is full-blown a fetishization of trans people because all one piece characters if they are drawn, female presenting are drawn like sex dolls. So unless they go through an actual gender transition and not just a pronoun change. There cannot be good representation with Yamato because Yamato is a fetish, not a fully fleshed out character. I mean to boil it all down. I don't think the author is capable of having any good lgbtq+ representation one piece is just not a sophisticated enough story and the characters are just too shallow for that to be possible

Bleach did a similar thing with Yoruichi acting like it was so amazing to have a character of color and she is supposedly bisexual but she's just waifu bait and it reeks of misogyny and fetishization of BIPOC. She's a furry to top it all off. It doesn't help that the bunny chick from my hero is basically the new gen version of the same character, but at least she is disabled too. So at least they tried to do something with her character other than waifu bait

So I would like to know why every character I've seen promoted as great representation in anime for either the BIPOC or LGBTQ+ communities seem to only be horribly fetishized, useless, waifu bait. Not actually a good character.

And even when Japan is dealing with its own ethnic minorities and indigenous populations it still does a horrible job by playing into the Noble Savage stereotype Hollywood likes to play into. Have you not seen the anime Golden Kamuy? It's about Japan's own first Nations tribe and it's So disrespectful to that. I swear they could not have had a single person from Hokkaido, much less a member of the actual Ainu people involved in the creation of that anime or manga. And yet I've seen so many people brag about that anime and manga and how it's so good for diversity. When again, every single Ainu character acts like a bad native American stereotype from like a 1950s American Hollywood western. It's that bad and don't get me started on the fan service in that show. It's at a level that could be considered exploitative but it's okay. Some of the characters might be gay so it's representation. To top it all off it reinforces white colonial beauty standards because the main Ainu character is specially because she's half white and has blue eyes like her white dad and she talks about how she's going to be a new kind of better Ainu for the future because she's white passing. That show is a reductive racist dumpster fire and I can't believe anyone says otherwise.

But you said you won't ban characters unless the fandom becomes too toxic. But you really should consider looking out for the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities by not promoting toxic problematic characters and actually banning these toxic problematic characters and shows

I'm not normally one to cater to ships when it comes to Golden Kamuy (didn't have any myself watching it for the first time either LOL. Still don't have any "biases") but I think Usao is a little funny so this is what they get if you can even call this "ship art". Their love language is violence <3 (/hj)

A little Nikaidou fanart a made a while ago and remembered that I haven’t posted it only now cuz today I finished the Golden Kamuy manga (finally). And a have some thoughts about it that I dunno where to put, so I’m just gonna write them here, so… Spoiler warning I guess? There will be couple of them, be careful.

So, firstly, I’m so happy for Sugimoto and Asirpa, they finally can live (at least somewhat) happily and eat tasty food without worrying about the gold. Secondly - press F to Nikaidou. While I’m a little sad about his death, I’m kinda glad??? That he died like this??? Because, let’s be honest, with his psychological state, he wouldn’t be able to find happiness at life. Even if he'd been able to reach his goal and kill Sigimoto, he would probably just kill himself after that, just to be with his brother, or even simply because he wouldn’t see a point in living anymore. So, I’m hoping that for at least a brief moment before his death, seeing face of his brother (that’s actually was his own, but that’s not the point) was able to settle a peace in his heart. Press F to Ogata too, I really liked how his emotions in his final moments were shown and even though I can’t call him my favourite character his story surely was interesting. About other characters - I probably will draw arts with them and tell my thoughts about them then, cuz a have quite a lot to say and this post already is too long, so if you wanna hear it why??? wait for it :) And also, if you’re here, thanks for reading all of that, I really appreciate it - like really. I’m not used to sharing my thoughts like this - mostly because I usually don’t have anyone to talk with about stuff like that, but I really want to do it more often and if at least someone is interested in my pointless rants, I will be surprised - in a good way. My man here is fucking blind, like, he needs glasses to read. He also has prescription sunglasses, and has more than those ugly glasses he wears.

Started buying Rolex watches when he worked as a salaryman. He simply saw a man with a fancy watch one day and said "Oh, I want one of those".

Ichi the Witch ch.9 thoughts

Okay, so I was wrong about Kumugi getting the spotlight here. In hindsight it makes sense, this is literally the first real trial that Ichi is undergoing, it would be a little strange for Kumugi to be the one to win the day, but I don't think it would have been a bad idea to establish her value within her introductory arc, y'know?

Still, since this is supposed to be endearing Ichi to Kumugi and not Kumugi to us, this is probably the better call on Nishi's part, especially since it gives us more time for Kumugi's characterization to simmer before reaching its inevitable boiling point down the line

Also, I kept talking about Kumugi's more mundane skills being indicative of her true value to the team, so I suppose something unrelated like "fashion sense" wouldn't be a good way of capitalizing on that theme

In lieu of what I wanted to see from Kumugi, I am very happy with what we're seeing from Ichi

Thinking Inside the Fish

Kumugi took Hisame's challenge at face-value: dress her up to look fabulous. Desscaras tried to work around the challenge: convince her that beauty comes from within. But Ichi is taking a whole different approach that even Hisame didn't see coming: making Hisame herself fabulous

I said last week that Ichi probably doesn't have much fashion sense because he most likely values function over form, and I maintain that's probably correct, but I won't deny that the pelt he wore in his initial outfit looked pretty damn nice

The implication of Ichi wearing pelts is that, as one might expect, Ichi is well aware of how to properly skin an animal and make clothes of them. He may need some help from the ladies on his team to make something that actually looks fashionable, but he's no stranger to working with animal skins

You all reading this might be thinking that pelts come from mammals, and you'd be right, but it's also not unheard of to make clothes from fish skins. Anyone who's read Golden Kamuy is familiar with cepker and cepur, salmon-skin shoes and coats respectively, so it's not hard to imagine that Ichi figured out how to do the same thing

It helps that Hisame is already designed to look like a dress with the lace on her fins, so the transition from fish to outfit should be fairly simple and surprisingly elegant

Aside from twisting the words of the challenge, the other thing I want to highlight is that Ichi has already found another new use for Inazuri, channeling the electricity through his knife-wand to create effectively a laser sword. This is a huge departure from simply electrocuting a target, practically becoming a new spell by combining the base spell's electrical properties with the properties of its medium. This leads me to wonder if the form of a wand informs its function, like if Ichi and Desscaras will be more prone to combat magic because their wands are weapons while Kumugi may find more supportive uses of the same spells with her pen-wand. That's something I'll speculate on more later, though

For now...that's really all I have to say about this chapter! I was wrong last week, and Ichi's doing something cool, but we won't have the payoff or narrative implications until next chapter, so...yeah! Easy week, I guess!

ive been thinking about this for a while, but i want to finally write my thoughts down about golden kamuy in reference to the meiji restoration because i think it’s so important to the central themes, especially that of cultural erasure. 

with the end of the tokugawa shogunate came a surge in imperial nationalism, and the russo-japanese war did a lot to spur this on. social inequality in japan was ignored and accepted by many because of the belief that everyone should be happy to serve the emperor, and japan’s victory in the war was used as an argument for the validity of the new imperial rule as japan became able to challenge and compete with western powers. and that rise in japanese nationalism led to the desire to create a more cohesive national identity. one way that desire manifested was in the rebranding of ezo to hokkaido and the oppresion of the indigenous cultures that live there, namely the ainu. 

now its not like golden kamuy is making an argument that the meiji restoration never should have happened, but it does call attention to one of the more controversial aspects of it that is often overlooked when people glorifiy of the meiji era as an ‘age of enlightenment’. it highlights that this nationalism crossed the line between unity and oppression. if ‘unity’ devolves into silencing voices and erasing tradition and culture in order to create a completely homogenous society, it ceases to be something worth having. sugimoto and asirpa’s friendship is proving that it is possible for cultures to coexist and share values without either one being erased. the focus on food in the show is very representative of this. asirpa introduces sugimoto to ainu cuisine, he introduces her to japanese cuisine, and although it takes some adjustment on both sides, they enjoy both, and sometimes combine elements of the two.

and that's why i think that no matter how outrageous the plot and characters are, it certainly succeeds as a piece of historical fiction.

A Russian by Any Other Name (Golden Kamuy fanfiction, 929 words)

Characters: Vasily Pavlichenko, Sugimoto Saichi, Asirpa, Shiraishi Yoshitake Ship: None Rating: All Audiences Themes: Missing scene, camp shenanigans, team dynamics, disability Warnings: None Summary: Vasily and the golden trio are camping for the night, and Vasily attempts to speak.

They’d been travelling together for months now. Squeezed tightly, the four of them sat around the fire inside a makeshift hut. The pine branches it was made of gave off a strong, fresh scent that contrasted the deep aroma of the miso broth bubbling away on the fire.

Asirpa took  a sip from her bowl and lit up as she always did. “Ahhh, Sugimoto’s osoma is so hinna!”

“I keep telling you, it—”

“It’s not poop!” Shiraishi cut him off, slapping his thigh repeatedly. „Hah! I knew it! You do say that every time! Haven’t you realised yet that she just keeps saying it to get your goat?”

“Hinna, hinna!” Asirpa repeated, and Shiraishi’s laughter rang through the hut, swallowed up by the branches.

This was how it went most nights. They caught, hunted, or gathered something to eat, cooked together, ate, laughed and then slept crowded together against the cold night air. Most nights were like that, with a few exceptions – the Russian didn’t always eat or spend time with them.

The Russian… that was only one of the several names Sugimoto referred to him as in his head. Shiraishi had started calling him “Hood Guy” early on, and both Sugimoto and Asirpa had adopted the term. But internally, Sugimoto had more names for him. The Sniper. The Artist. The Mute.

Perhaps his inability to communicate with them was part of what kept the man at a distance, but Sugimoto struggled to think of a solution to the problem besides drawing pictures – and Sugimoto was, admittedly, a truly terrible artist.

“Hinna, hinna,” Asirpa repeated as she tasted her second helping of soup.

“Hinna, hinna,” Sugimoto echoed.

“Hiiiiinnaaaaaa,” Shiraishi did, too.

They chuckled.

“Hn-nh…”

The voice, if one could call it that, was one Sugimoto had only heard produce grunts before, but this was, although clumsy and awkward, most definitely a word.

“Did you…” Asirpa’s eyes had grown large, and she reached out over the fire. “Hood Guy, did you just… say hinna?”

With everyone’s attention on him, Hood Guy lowered his eyes and pushed a spoonful of soup past his barely parted lips. Over time, as he’d started eating with them, Sugimoto had noticed that the scars on his cheeks were not only superficial. He struggled to move his mouth and jaw, and whatever small bites he took never filled his cheeks.

“Hey, are your wounds getting better?” Shiraishi said and patted Hood Guy on the shoulder. “That’s great!”

“Can you say it again, pleeeeease?” Asirpa whined, leaning forward. “Hinna, hinna!”

“Hinna,” Sugimoto repeated after her.

“Hm…” came a grunt from Hood Guy. „Hi…nh…”

“It’s getting better! He’s improving!” Asirpa said with delight.

Hood Guy tipped the remaining soup from his mess kit lid into his mouth and wiped the wetness from his lips.

“Can you,” Suginoto began, seizing the opportunity before the titular hood would once again cover its guy’s mouth, “say your name?”

“Yes! What’s your name?” Asirpa asked.

Hood Guy looked at them blankly, like he always did when he was trying hard to understand, but didn’t succeed.

Sugimoto pointed to himself. “Sugimoto.” He pointed at Asirpa. “Asirpa.” Then at Shiraishi. “Shiraishi.”

And then, without a word, he pointed at the Russian. The Sniper. The Artist. The Mute. Hood Guy.

This time, his eyes widened with understanding, but were darkened by a frown immediately after. His lips pressed into a tight line, moving without parting, as though the man controlling them was reacquainting himself with his own mouth. And perhaps he was. Reacquainting himself with his broken bones and shattered teeth, with the jagged remains of his speech.

When the first sound left him, Sugimoto had no idea what he’d said. It sounded inhuman, his voice raw and the word as though it itself had been pierced by a bullet, too.

The others looked at each other, doubt creeping in, but none of them dared suggest Hood Guy give it a rest, because his expression advised caution.

Harsh lines carved their way around his mouth, cutting a border between its corners and his scars. He frowned, blue eyes staring into the flames. Beads of sweat dotted his face, and Sugimoto realised he was fighting pain.

“Uashiluh,” came a quick, hacked up jumble, all in one, like a cat throwing up a ball of hair.

Sugimoto reached for Hood Guy’s mess kit lid - different than his own – and ladled a little broth into it before handing it back. Hood Guy took it and drank, letting out a sigh at the end.

“Go slow. Break it down into syllables,” he said. “Su-gi-mo-to. Like that.”

Hood Guy took a breath, then another. He raised his hand and felt his jaw, felt the scars Ogata had left behind.

“Va… sh- s… sssi… ly…”

“Va… sily?” Sugimoto asked.

And, unbelievably…

A nod.

The mood lit up, not like oil poured on a fire, but like the first warm sunrise in spring.

“Vasily!” Sugimoto shouted, voice cracking with laughter.

“Vasily?” Shiraishi repeated. “I’ve never heard that name before!”

“Vasily!” Asirpa joined, diving at Vasily over the small flames remaining of their fire. He fell backwards against the walls of the hut, and a small twig fell on Asirpa’s head. Another thing they’d never heard from him before left Vasily’s throat – a laugh. Ragged and rough and immediately followed by a cough, but a laugh nonetheless.

“Woah! I didn’t know Russians could laugh!” said Shiraishi. He swerved immediately and evaded Sugimoto’s swing, but knocked against the wall, causing the sharp end of a branch to poke his bald head. “Ow!"

Congrats on restarting uni! I think a lot of the dunmeshi discourse comes from people latching on to what they as an “unproblematic” or wholesome show w/respect to sexualization of women and then get jumpscared when the tone shifts - or at least from people with strong senses of “moral purity”. Like I saw someone talking about how shipping farcille was bad because it was sexualization of these characters and it essentially ruined the purity of the show and was counter to what it was written for, lol.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I just received an essay last night that says it's wrong for us to sexualize the female characters of Dungeon Meshi by putting them in these polls for reasons. I haven't read the full thing yet.

I went and looked it up but Dungeon Meshi is in the Seinen genre, I don't think most people realize that I didn't. I thought it was a Shonen. But now things make sense because remember what is the most iconic Seinen manga? Oh yeah, it's Berserk. So now do things make sense for everyone? Complaining about the wholesome purity of a show in the Seinen genre yeah things are going to get dark and if we use Berserk or Vinland Saga as the base lines since they're two of the most iconic mangas in the genre. Yeah it's going to get real dark. I can't believe they hid the fact this was a Seinen from us for so long.

I get that it's refreshing not to have an anime that doesn't overly sexualize the female characters and uses them exclusively for family service. But it doesn't give you an excuse to become the morality police. Because the fandom is beginning to act like all those little old ladies in the church who used to shame me all the time for what I was wearing. I don't know if they realize it, but it feels like that when all of you clutch your pearls and panic because how dare you sexualize the female characters? That's against the purity of the show.

Just a little FYI, I found another Manga/Anime that also refuses to sexualize its female characters. That exclusively does fan service with its male characters. It's just as refreshing. Like Dungeon Meshi, it's also a Seinen series, but it's a historical action-adventure series similar to Atlantis the Lost Empire called Golden Kamuy. It is incredible. Please watch or read it. It does not get enough credit for how good it is. When I say it exclusively does fan service with its male characters, I mean it. We have not seen so much as an ankle on the female characters, but the male characters are frequently shirtless, if not naked. Plus, they're all hot, and there are several types of hot, whether you like skinny, muscular, scarred, or various levels of hairy. Please go watch that show

These are my favorite movies. Favorites can bounce around a little but generally speaking these tend to come back most often or have never moved. Naked Lunch is an adaptation of a book which is also very good. I don't recommend watching it with someone else unless you're confident it's their speed it can really fucking bore people and a lot of what can be considered comedic is maybe unsavory. Just speaking as someone who thought it would be a good idea to show it to 2 people who were definitely getting absolutely nothing out of it. I've always loved Saw 2. It was the first one I watched, and it was the year it released. Personal bias aside I have a lot of thoughts as to why it's the best installment from traps to matters of story and design. Meet The Feebles comes and goes but I always hand it the most positive regards and I always love showing that one to people. It's a completely solid dark puppet horror-comedy made by Peter Jackson (yes that one) and TDC speaks for itself. I grew up watching it just about every day when I was living in a tattoo shop. We had a tv in the lobby and I'd come down to put on He-Man/TDC and draw. As for shows I actually like quite a few. I love Venture Bros. It's a huge staple for my head and I owe it a lot for my general development in my pre-teens even if it wasn't the most appropriate thing to be consistently watching at my age. I never dropped it and have rewatched it A LOT. I don't hesitate to call it my favorite show of all time. I also enjoy BrBa/BCS as much as the next person and have also watched both of them multiple times, but I'm not really into "fandom" and I don't post about it or anything apart from sharing some pieces that jadenvargen created when it randomly hit a gay-viewer peak. In any case they're also favorites. I really liked The Walking Dead and binged a shit ton of it a couple yrs ago. Unfortunately while I LOVE zombies I am picky about them and as soon as we started getting into More Drama Less Zombies territory I got really bored. I never finished it. I do really enjoy the first handful of seasons though honestly, specifically when you can see the VERY strong highs and lows Rick faced and reacted to and what happened to his head. HIs son pisses me off. I'm not immune to doing obnoxious character impressions when less than sober. I'm a very passive anime watcher but I really enjoy the ones I get into. Panty & Stocking is great, I like Naruto as a show but don't have interest in anything after Shippuden. I liked Mob Psycho. I liked Golden Kamuy but ended up reading it instead at some point. FMAB was the 2nd anime I ever finished and I still like it a lot even if I seriously have never brought it up. Easy favorite. I like seeing how peoples thoughts regarding it have changed and spun over time and influenced other work. I enjoy most Muppets stuff. I like the show more than the movies. Hate abc's Muppets. Fraggle Rock is a come-and-go favorite. Sesame Street I don't watch as much but I enjoy it with about the same energy attached to the fault of their larger puppets being some personal favorites. M*A*S*H is a huge favorite but I don't watch it as often as some of the aforementioned as an adult. I like Transformers (G1) I think it's funny and great and I try to show it to people often. Maybe a strange curveball but I have guilty pleasure reality tv shows I enjoy a lot. They were/are all on Oxygen if that helps you narrow down the flavor. I named my schools of tetra fish after some of them as a kid. Come to your own conclusions. One of them was named Jersey Shore but I didn't actually like that one too much I got sick of looking at Pauly D. Sometimes shows on TLC get me but I don't tend to finish them or see the storyline out. I have no explanation. I'm sure something big is probably slipping me but maybe this does the job. I like a really wide variety of shit and I rarely fully turn something down without some kind of investigation, even if it's a trailer or a 1 episode watch for water testing.

one of the things i love most about golden kamuy (though there are hardly any things i don’t love about golden kamuy) is the characters’ deaths. it’s almost surreal how good noda is at evading the little things that can make a fictional death melodramatic and silly and hitting you straight in the heart.

ienaga and ushiyama both finding “perfection” and fulfillment in dying so that another person can live. botarou finding the true realization of his dream in dying so that another person can live and remember him. hijikata recalling his youth and letting new young warriors take his place. sofia dying forgiven after a lifetime of guilt. toni anji’s quiet death that is devoid even of sound effects on manga’s pages. nikaidou getting split in half (physically) and through this, at long last, reuniting with his other half (metaphorically). usami receiving tsurumi’s grand gesture of love, in a way that he’s aware of (the “brother in arms” speech) and in a way that he’s unaware of (the pinky finger). kiroranke calling out for sofia. heiji koito thinking of his son as he’s sinking with his ship. ueji seeing his father’s disappointed face in his own and laughing as he falls to death. inudou dying by the object of his life-long obsession. sekiya’s death proving to him that the world is more than simply a sequence of random events. henmi’s obsession with death and sugimoto’s mercy of giving him a good one. heita’s “i managed to beat it”. ogata’s entire dying monologue as he can’t deny his true feelings anymore.

death as a relief. death that completes a person or one that brings them happiness and fulfillment. one of the most intimate parts of human experience. noda writes his deaths in a way that allows the readers some alone time with the dying character — as we learn the conclusion to their story.

Like I figure that All Might due to AFO's involvement might be Gold (or it's actually Eagle Eye somehow seeing his golden OFA aura, or he sees the OFA colors which is Confusing, or it can't process all the souls/imprints at once so it settles on something headache-inducing).

Aizawa might scan as Blue but with flickers of Red when he's mad. Nezu is Nezu so I think it'd be funny if he skitters the whole dang spectrum depending on how strong his maniacal tendencies are at that moment (but generally leaning Blue).

But like... say Kamui or Endeavor cross Desmond's path. Red because very strong Opinions about "villainous acts" and bullheaded belief that the reports of him being a terrorist are still valid?

Would the Nomu even have a color if they have no personal intent or will depending on how Brain Blasted the individuals are? Or are they solidly Red because they're brainwashed/programmed to have Omnidirectional Violence as default?

Most of the people Desmond would see would be gray or, if they have information he might find useful, white.

I think part of why he likes messing with Aizawa so much is no matter how irritated the man gets with him he never wavers from the bright blue shine in his eagle vision. Even before Desmond officially met him he could see a blue figure following him and was definitely curious/ half convinced his father had sent an assassin to tail him. Shouta however is blue because even when he was told about his new mission he doesn’t immediately jump to the conclusion that Desmond is a villain. The man has always had a soft spot for vigilantes for as much as they give him migraines.

I can definitely see All Might registering gold. But funnier would be the idea that the vestiges are just… hanging around him and he can’t see them but Desmond can at least with Eagle Vision active. Des is mostly irritated that he’s not even just hallucinating his own ghosts anymore he has moved on to others’. He also can’t look directly at All Might with it active because the combined glow of all eight of them is fucking blinding and he gave himself a headache the first time he tried. And the second. And then what sounded like Malik’s voice was calling him a “foolish novice” so he stopped trying.

I would like to think that Nezu if anyone other than Desmond was looking at him would fluctuate constantly between all the colors but for Desmond he’s pretty solidly blue and gold. Nezu has a soft spot for fellow test subjects and broken people trying their best to make the world better.

Most of the heroes are gray or perhaps a light blue. No one understands why Desmond distrusts Endeavor and a few other heroes on sight and he feels incredibly vindicated when certain things eventually come to light (*coughtouyacough*)

I also feel like Izuku is blindingly gold but for the life of him Desmond can’t figure out why. At least until they get thrown in the middle of the brewing war and Desmond realizes with a sickening lurch that they are just like him. And unlike everyone who watched him walk willingly to his death, Desmond isn’t about to let the same thing happen to a teenager who didn’t ask for any of this.

HuaYin, multi-chapter fic, rated E. Dead dove. Canon-divergent AU with aroace Xie Lian who doesn't reciprocate Hua Cheng's feelings. It follows Hua Cheng's journey towards rediscovering the meaning of love and devotion, with Yin Yu playing a fundamental part on it, of course. Endgame HuaYin, but also with a focus on the meaning of platonic love, friendship, soulmates, and forgiveness. Xie Lian and Quan Yizhen are still very important for Hua Cheng and Yin Yu, and they share a deep bond that goes beyond romantic feelings. So yeah this is part of my HuaLianQuanYin agenda in a way.

To me, if Quan Yizhen is the Sun and Yin Yu is the Moon, then Jian Shi is like the tides, following the Moon just like the Sun does, but he's not even there in the sky with them 💔 And he knows it. He knows, and it gets more and more painful because he knows he will never reach the Moon. At least the Sun has a chance. But he doesn't. And I really want to explore all those complicated feelings c:
