I'm researching the era when Alastor was alive right now to get a better idea of both his character, the life he lived before Hell, and to hash out a backstory for him.

And so, apparently, Alastor lived through the Prohibition (which was basically the United States government illegalizing the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol because they thought it was the cause of a lot of domestic violence and child abandonment).

Alastor canonically died in 1933.

Do you know how long the Prohibition lasted?

From 1920-1933.

ALASTOR LITERALLY DIED THE SAME YEAR ALCOHOL BECAME LEGAL AGAIN. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BITTER HE MUST'VE BEEN?

The Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933, and now my headcanon is that Alastor died December 6, 1933. Literally the day after he could legally drink all the booze he wanted.

I am learning a LOT about New Orleans and the era Alastor lived through (including the gay community in the city at the time) which has been a lot of fun, and I just wanted to share that tidbit because it is so fucking funny to me.

Being a Hunter of Artemis doesn't automatically make you aro/ace, both, or even just one. It also doesn't automatically make you queer.

Being a Hunter is just literally making a vow of chastity, and swear off romance. That's it. It's essentially like a religious order, such as the vows a priest in Catholicism would make. It's called abstinence.

The Hunters of Artemis can be queer. They can be aro/ace and everything in between and not.

But guess what. They can be gay. They can be pan. They can be bi and demi and gray and hetero and everything else.

I'm saying this because literally every Hunter I've ever come across in the RRverse are always headcanoned to be aroace. And only aroace.

And that's fine! I'm not saying to stop making headcanons!

But I am saying there's more to aros and aces than just aroace. And I would love to see more of that.

I am demiromantic asexual. I would call myself romance-neutral, and sex-repulsed. If given a spot in the Hunt, I may or may not accept, but I do know that if I did, I would be one of the ones who would leave- either for my own pursuits or because romance happened to come across my path.

Being in the Hunt would not make me aroace. I would remain arospec and ace, just as an aroallo would remain aroallo. Just like a heterosexual would remain heterosexual.

Sublabels are just as important as their umbrella ones, and need to be acknowledged more often.

thinking about why I love monster hunter and how it's not just that it delivers on the very specific power fantasy of defeating large beasts in cool ways with a bit of metal on a stick, it's that most substantive problems can be solved by defeating a large beast with a bit of metal on a stick

interpersonal conflict is vanishingly rare in monster hunter. everyone's united against a common environmental threat. greed, oppression, the various evils of humanity barely make an appearance. if there's a problem you can probably kill an elder dragon about it.

it's a nice little bit of escapism to go to a place where everyone is just trying to be nice and help you succeed. at bopping the god of monsters in the face with a hammer.

also there are cats everywhere and they are my friends.

Something something just because the dog isn't flashy doesn't mean it's not driven. Just because it's not screaming doesn't mean it's not in drive.

Just because the dog is best suited for trailing, locating, and flushing game and thus rarely gets to participate in killing game, doesn't make it less important than the team members who are better at killing. The killing might be the flashiest and most exciting part, but it isn't the most important part. The dogs that kill won't be able to do that if the dogs that flush don't put the game into the position to be killed.

Grumbly venting brought to you a conversation with someone who thinks the actual kill is the most important part of hunting. And who thinks that only badass, hardcore, drivey, screamy dogs that murder are good hunting dogs.
