Call of the Night Season 2 Announced

Earlier on Twitter today, the official CoTN account announced that a second season of Call of the Night was in production, redirecting users to the official website where comments from mangaka Kotoyama and season 1 director Itamura appear.

I say specifically season 1 because, well, they don't list any staff in the slightest. They do confirm that Itamura will return as the series director (as they refer to him as such), but there's not an ounce of information otherwise.

Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't be Lidenfilms returning for a second season, but it infinitely raises the credibility of a certain other studio taking its place

Studio BONES

Fans of the studio and those with a keen eye recognize that the balance of studio groups has been upset since Mob Psycho 100 III ended in the summer of 2022.

Similarly, since Itamura's departure from SHAFT, BONES is the only other studio that Itamura has worked at (and heavily so with The Case Study of Vanitas and Godzilla S.P).

So, you have your returning director, which has only worked at one of two studios (though there's 2 or 3 credits that sit outside of them) since their departure from their previous studio. Weirdly enough though, the studio that did the first season of CoTN isn't even mentioned.

It's a black box, but so long as Itamura remains the director, I'm incredibly curious to see where this second season lands.

Mei is a researcher. Yun is an engineer. Together with their companions they face an Earth rattling challenge: Kaiju. When the blood red mist rolls in, monsters follow. Now these two different teams will band together to find a way to combat these monsters before they bring the end of the world.

Godzilla is a classic monster movie. Monster movies are a staple of the horror genre. This unique twist on Godzilla was interesting to watch and it wasn’t scary. I’m not a big fan of scary, thriller, or horror. I know plenty of people feel the same way, so I figured that I would a not scary anime on this Halloween list.

State of the Season pt 2

When the show was announced I'd been wondering about how they'd deal with the 卍/manji character, because removing it from the title is one thing, but removing it from the story would be a pretty wild idea, considering how important it is. Well, apparently they're dealing with it using distractingly hilaribad censorship, at least in Crunchyroll's version. Like... okay, people. I would've thought that adding a note to educate western viewers would be enough, but if you want to make life harder for yourselves and the viewers that's cool too, I guess.

Anyway, I have an easier time following this than I did with the manga, so for now I'm okay. It's nothing particularly revolutionary or exciting, and as most stories like this, it's pretty much carried by the charm of the characters rather than the central mystery or the plot twists. I know the manga is still ongoing, but I hope the anime will find a way to end on a satisfying note.

Godzilla SP

One of the season's surprises - I'm enjoying it a lot more than I'd expected! I'm not a kaijuu fan so I'm not hugely excited about them, and there are some aspects of the show that I find kind of grating - like even for an "eccentric genius" type character Mei is like she's visiting from a completely different show, or the annoyingly chirpy AI that is also a bit jarring in an otherwise more or less realistic setting, or the annoyingly shouty old man and the Shouwa style humor around him. (I also find myself tuning out during most of the Jet Jaguar fights, but I guess that's just me lacking the familiarity with and the nostalgia for the kaijuu genre.)

But overall I'm enjoying Godzlla SP a great deal! The science mystery/thriller part is pretty fun to follow along, and the pacing, direction, etc. are all on point. Who wold have thought that I'd keep up with this one?

And here we have one that is not a surprise whatsoever - I had expected to enjoy this one, and indeed I am enjoying it. It's a fun little show that I'm enjoying a lot for just what it is. :D Not much to say about this one, it's just cute and fun. I can't wait for the next arc to start...!
