crack (kinda?) theory: E-Soul's a cop and that's why he shot Moon

Preface: This is all entirely speculation. I could be wrong. I am a delusional mf so I need to say whatever's on my mind lmao

This episode we were introduced to the "clean-up" specialists with Blankster being able to induce amnesia with his punches. It's interesting, then, that E-Soul's PV has him standing in front of what is seemingly a memorial. A testament to never forget--we are then taken through a flashback of what seems to be a previous E-Soul's experience (considering the designs are different + the "past" E-Soul appears to have like, actual limbs). One of the few lines he has in the PV is this:

"You're a hero! Have you forgotten!"

Sure, that could be a mistranslation or a mere coincidence, but I'd like to suggest that E-Soul works along the same lines as the "clean-up" specialists--an agent of the association. Only, while they erase the traces of others, he is the one who must always remember. As they say, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. And the history he remembers is one of unchecked heroes, abusing their powers. Specifically, he says that heroes "are those who bear the trust of the people" but :

"we pay the price that comes along." While I think this is obviously connected to the detrimental side effects of powers like Firm Man being unable to squat and Nice's OCD, what if it suggests that there needs to be a balance so that heroes do not abuse their powers? (if the side effects are on purpose though that'd be fucked). Or, rather, that heroes need to recall what their powers are for--to help people. After all, this episode we've had Miss J explicitly say heroes are nothing without their followers--yes, in the sense of the faith system--but also because heroes are there for the sake of their people.

So, why did he choose to kill Moon? What crime did our girlie commit by literally just existing? I think we need to ask a few other questions to get to the heart of that.

How and why did he get to the island at the same time Lin Ling did? Lin Ling is visibly healed when he comes to Moon--E soul had plenty of time to come and kill her before this. Although as far as I can tell, people don't seem to know Moon is (was) alive after the battle with Godeye (yknow, the whole focus being on Lin Ling to the point everyone just seemed to move on from Nice immediately), I find it somewhat unlikely he found out just as L0 was going to visit her and then hurried over, unless he has teleportation abilities too. We did see him chasing a speedster in episode 3 I think, so it isn't impossible his powers are at least partly movement based. That being said, I'm going to assume he already knew Moon was there and had prepared means to come to her beforehand. Only, he chose this point to specifically.

Why? Because she still had trust-given powers. However, as she herself said at the end of the episode, she had left the teleporter behind. And when did E-Soul kill her? Right as Lin Ling was going to give it back to her.

If she is still dead in the minds of people, she obviously isn't using her powers to help them. In fact, as long as she doesn't come out publicly, she can use her powers however she likes. So by gaining the teleporter back, she instantly becomes unchecked. She becomes exactly someone E-Soul might want to stop. It's only when she looks like she's going to take the teleporter that she dies--when she reaches for power.

(And it would also kinda explain why E-Soul is rank 9, below a freaking dog. The 10th spot is precarious because it is the barrier between the top 10 and the rest of the heroes--people aim for it almost as much as the position of X, and it's constantly changing. E-Soul, as number 9, can essentially evaluate who gets to move past rank 10 and into the top heroes proper. After all, we saw how L0 and Firm Man fell and changed in rank so swiftly.)

Hi hello, feel free to ignore me. Mostly rambling. Long story short: your writing is excellent and I look forward to your future work. Your art is also adorable and I also look forward to you making more and more onteresting compositions to illustrate your stories. You have given me incredible brainworms.

Longer version:

To begin, I just want to say that you basically carry the fandom on your back currently TT^TT. I OPEN THE TBHX AO3 PAGE AND REFRESH DAILY, you are consistantly up the there to share your newest brainworms and I *highly* appreciate it.

You're literally running with the brothers AU and I absolutely love it, so much so that I started creating my own theories and ideas about what you're planning or what might be going on TT^TT. I'm obsessed.

That being said no offense (or full offense) bit its very clear that you've beennpossessed by the muses and I hope you stay possessed for a long while! ✧(σ๑˃̶̀ꇴ˂̶́)σ

The grandparents of the Lin brothers, they're from their maternal side yes? I'm not gonna lie were they just like, rich civilians or something else? Because it honestly feels more like they were involved in some kind of upperclass corruption/crime to be honest. o_O??? Like China probably doesn't have the most amazing child care system for orphans, but surely they're likely to receive some kind of stipend if they don't live in an orphanage? Did they hate Lin Ling that much or something? It sounds like they weren't happy that their mom (????I should just reread the fic at this point) married a "normal" guy (who doesn't fit their aesthetic standards???) And the isolation of the Lin brothers might have been an accidentally good(???) Consequence of that because they weren't seperated earlier? I mean TBHX probably plays out somewhere in a far future alternate universe China and corruption has always been a thing everywhere.

It would be interesting if you build out their background to show that their parents might not have been "normal" either. Like if they were perhaps involved with the hero industry in some other way or the (theorised) cult from E-Soul's trailer. E-Soul himself seems to be from an orphanage, it would be interesting depending on how his episodes and backstory goes how that could impact your AU.

Are you thinking about having them doxxed at some point? Or in some way? Lin Ling's stuff is in storage now after all and people seem to be digging into Nice's background, it wouldn't be out of place for someone (a rando or Enlighter/Godeye) to break in and find stuff like their childhood photo album or maybe even some pieces of old papers or journal fragments. Maybe even a video or two. It would give peope a look into the "Lin Xiao" behind Nice, who was raised and doted on by his resiliant older brother as well as how hard their childhood was.

People find out how eventually how Lin Xiao was taken in by their grandparents, but Lin Ling was left without support. How much fuether you could go with that I don't know tho, my brain is fried. It could result into a deep dive into how he was adviced to eventually cut contact with Lin Ling in order to protect him from future villain attacks but how this was done quite cruelly. Or maybe an exploration fo the public finding out about the manipulation they had to suffer through.

It would be hella incindiary if Lin Ling was leaked to that one murder on the two traffickers in that warehouse, especially if its paired up with the audio logs of him calling emergency services for help and having people listen to a literal child beg for help for his brother only to be hung up on. I'm not sure how people would react to that but it sure would be interesting.

Killing/murder is currently a dubious topic in the TBHX universe, Ghostblades trailers seem to imply that it is likely accepted in some way or form but we'll have to wait till his episodes drop to ger any real confirmations.

Or maybe an exploration into how Lin Ling was exploited with his advertising work, being spectacularly underpaid by his boss and Treeman corp not doing their due diligence when it comes to employing outside companies for their marketing? Or how, in a cruel stroke of irony, Lin Ling made most of the ads for Moon and Nice despite not having even seen or spoken to his brother in years?

I was also thinking about what direction you might take the whole "The Commoner" thing as well, of you were planning to give Lin Ling powers at least. I feel like after his near death experience, he'd likely stay out of the public eye for quite a while and Nice would definately hover over him like some kind of motherhen and being right on top of his recovery. Anything from his nutrition to his physical therapy, he'd likely also push for his Gege to start training/exercising as well so he can live a long and healthy life lmao. By the time he'd come out to face the public again he'd probably look way healthier. At that point people would probably be buzzing like crazy about how much he resembles Nice despite his different coloring (que people overlaying their bald faces with photoshop).

Lin Ling, The Commoner. Rejected by his judgemental high society grandparents, forced to take on the enormous task of raising his little brother himself from a young age but rising to the occaision anyway and living up to his name. The Lin Ling who took the health and safety of his brother into his own hands and saved him hinself. Who makes inspiring advertisements that need to be toned down in how they give people hope and focus on normal people instead of just the heroes (the To Be Hero X ad being an example). They might even manifest a white streak either to give him something to link him to Nice (or because they heard he almost died but revived and they start making Jason Todd jokes).

I don't know really it all could go into any direction and I have no way to knowing what you're planning either lmao. At this point I'm just making fanfics of your fanfics in my head as I eagerly await an other update. Fanfic-ception. Regarding the coming episode 5, I think I'm screwed, like literally. I'm going to be honest here—lbs ay has always been supposed to be a single fic with two chapters and that's that.

At some point I ended up releasing "he has a lover" as a comedic sequel, then "word winding" is supposed to be an experiment of how they would have interacted and for some reason it escalated there of me actually doing more works

What I'm trying to say is—this isn't exactly a planned AU so expect many many conflicting stuff and I'm really unprepared if the series has a very different version of events. Though I try to make things work so it'd still be interesting)

I suppose if I couldn't brainstorm anything by ep.5 and couldn't find a way to cooperate the story then ig the timeline would be heading in another direction and probably end soon with different endings I suppose (not sure)

About the family, yes it's maternal side and yes the grandparents aren't too happy their daughter married a man who doesn't stand out that's why both ling and Xiao hasn't seen anyone on their mother's side.

Yes they are rich with connection but they aren't "dark criminal family" more like a long standing family rich with gold mines or smth, they like to be very noble when it comes to their image. Like Xiao has to maintain his ballerina skills elegantly in front of many other "nobles". Or some other family members being part of opera, swordsmanship, politics. Those stuff. They are corrupt so you're also right

As for Lin ling, they don't hate the child but it doesn't meet their expectations. Unlike Xiao who inherited that iconic looks from his mother—ling inherited his from his father (and grandparents aren't happy with it)

As for their parents, allat I ain't spoiling that one but they are somewhat important to the main story but yeah

Background

In 1999 Jack Duckett sought out the great-granddaughter of his former associate Jonah Hex, Stella Hex, searching for a relic known as the Godeye. Seemingly, she didn't have it, though, the two bonded, Stella unaware of Jack's past or motives. After a while though, Jack abandoned her, unaware that she was pregnant with Jinny. Stella leaned heavily on her parents to get through her pregnancy and later on as Jinny got older as well.

Jinny's early life was marked by her efforts to help out around the family home and auto shop, and by her adventures on the outskirts of town where she picked up the beginnings of her naturalist know-how. She also became well acquainted with her moms penchant for bad jokes.

In highschool she felt different from her peers, both due to the difference in her home life compared to her peers (and the rumours that persisted among some of the parents about the type of woman her mother had been when she was younger), and then also, Jinny realised she is gay and came out. There was a very small queer community in town, but all in all relatively accepting. Close to graduation she started dating a girl and things were good for a while.

It was right after graduation that she discovered that she was being cheated on, and after storming off to the local bowling alley to try to clear her mind, walked right into a robbery. Already furious as hell, she punched one of the robbers right in the face and took his gun, and then managed to single-handedly stop the crime. Later that day, her mom presented her with the family inheritance, a trunk of things that once belonged to Jonah Hex, and with the news that she had cancer.

With encouragement from her mom, Jinny set out for a short road trip, get a little space from the problems at home and time to figure out what she wanted to do with the trunk. It was during this time that she bumped into Young Justice in the middle of one of their adventures, and ended up joining up with them to help them.

Once they were done that leg of their adventures she went her own way and went back home to be with her mom in her final days. After her passing, Jinny inherited the family auto shop, and organised her mom's funeral, which was well attended and made the local news.

That news reached Jack, who came back to town to investigate his apparent daughter. Jinny was excited to meet more family, though a little skeptical due to his abandonment of the family. Her childhood friend Lady Bird on the other hand had the downright creeps about the guy. Jinny over the next week bonded with him though, trying to get to know him, and learn a little more of her moms past.

However her trust came to bite her in the ass when her and Lady Bird came back to the shop one evening to find Jack robbing the place. Jinny tried to fight him but was knocked out. He got his hands on the Godeye and used it to take control over the town, Jinny and Lady Bird being the only two unaffected. They encountered a false version of Stella in town who was used by Jack to lure Jinny where he wanted her to take over her body and use Lady Bird as a sacrifice for power. Jinny was able to resist him, resulting in him taking Lady Bird's body. Thankfully though, Jinny's resistance had weakened him to where Lady Bird could fight back, expelling him from her body, and allowing Jinny to grab the Godeye.

In the aftermath, Jinny gave the Godeye to the Justice League, and Lady Bird discovered she had some of Jack's powers. Jinny and her decided to hit the road, seeking answers as to Jinny's powers, adventure, and to stop Jack for good. They've been on the road for a while, and Jinny is starting to realize her nature as a century baby.

Powers

Immortality. She will not age past 19-20 and will die at midnight of New Years Eve 2099, not a minute sooner unless the entire universe ends.

Energy Negation. When powers of a mystical/willpower/psychic source are targeting her, she can negate them through force of will. The energy from this is stored for later use.

Spatial Manipulation. Using her energy stores, she can manipulate the relative space between things, the greater the effect, the more energy it takes. Currently she can use this for minor fast travel and teleportation.

Abilities

Sharpshooting: Jinny is a crack shot with handguns and manual rifles/shotguns.

Fast Draw: Not the fastest in the west, but pretty damn close.

Hand To Hand Combat: She's a decent brawler but currently has no formal training.
