Started reading The Book of Elsewhere by China Miéville & Keanu Reeves. Had to take a break and paint B/Unute about whom I have a totally regular normal amount of feelings.

academic rivals to lovers is actually the most entertaining shit in the world. youre competing for top of the class but also for each others attention. youre giving presentations in class and silently hoping they slip up just a little, forget part of what theyre meant to say, just so you can get a higher grade than them. theyre constantly on your mind & taking up brain space and you rationalize that away, call it hatred. you answer a question correctly in class a split second before they get the chance to and youre glad because you beat them to it but also because you know theyre looking at you

In hysterics over the fact that mark's name is 75% Mars. Of ALL the people in the ares 3 mission he's the one that gets stranded on Mars. The protagonist of the next mission is going to me called jupitek and you'll never guess where he goes. It's Hannibal the cannibal all over again

deal
They stood out tonight—after days in the city, Aspiration had grown sick and tired of the itch of Excellence’s illusory disguise, so despite the risk, had gone without. Suspicious looks she could deal with; she’d spent enough time doing business in Naazgarash as a Zashi that a few glares meant nothing. The real danger was the presence of the Wraith, and his grievance was with Sorrow, who refused to wear a disguise anyway. Her being bare-faced wouldn’t keep him from spotting his glittering target a mile away, and if he wanted either or both of them dead, there were more than enough shadows in Voah’kasis, night or day, that there was nothing she could do to stop him.
picture
Vren’s knees hit the dirt, infernii boots heavy on the backs of his calves to keep him from getting up. Only boots, no hands. His thumb twitched towads his ring—then he snatched up the pouch. Inside was the gleam of gold; no red diamonds, but the pouch was stuffed full. He pulled out a coin, unsurprised to find it was an Imperial scale. “That enough to outbid Fenthari?” [said Sorrow] A hundred scales, at his best guess, maybe more. None of it taxed, all of it his. This, plus the Fenthari’s diamonds…calcuations ran over one another in his head, years of his tally erased in one grand swoop. He could picture the look on Zhira’s face, the masked rage that his favourite knife was suddenly a few decades closer to freedom.
fire
A chime rang out. Through fading curls of smoke, Hope stumbled forwards—Wit darted out to catch her, slinging an arm around her waist. Her hands moved shakily as she signed. “Dragon got Harmony and Passion. Saw before fire. After—” A cough wracked her body. “—after demon.”
magic
Lucian went rolling past them again, followed by Quest, who bounced rather more than Aliyne was expecting. “Can’t you just use a rock or something? Rocks break.” “Spells require specific components, so no.” “Do it witch-wise instead without them, then.” Leshanna stiffened. “That is not remotely how magic works. I am a wizard, not some mumbling village hag. A skilled scribe does not hurl ink at a page and hope for letters.”

I love Frankenstein, because there is no world in which the story does not take place exactly as it had. Victor was always yearning for more, even in his happy childhood he wanted more than love, he dismissed humanity. And it was only when he went beyond god, when he created his own living creature, that he could finally take a step back and see what he had done. It took for Victor to be down in the depths of hell to notice the flame around him. And by that time, it is too late for any man to turn back. So Victor did the only thing he could possibly do, turn and run, close his eyes and pretend the heat of the fire was just the summer sun. Pretend he was still a man, still human. And that action, that attempt to proclaim humanity, is what sets the creature upon his path to ruin. The creature can never be anything but violent, because there is no world in which another man looks upon him and reacts with anything besides fear. The creature can never be human because as soon as Victor turned his back on him, so did the rest of the world. And those factors swirl into the combination that leads these two entities, two being, two things that could never be human, to their death. Their death. They died together because they had to. Because they lost their humanity to the other, they lost everything they did and could have to the other, they only lived in spite of the other.

There's that bit in The Truth where Sacharissa and William are arguing about the value of newspapers and the truth where Sacharissa reads him down and I think about it a lot.
“They’re just ordinary people who breed canaries and things as a hobby. Their chairman lives next door to me, which is why he gave me this. This stuff is important to him! My goodness, but it’s dull. It’s all about Best of Breed and some changes in the show rules about parrots which they argued about for two hours. But the people who were arguing were mostly people who mostly spend their days mincing meat or sawing wood and basically leading little lives that are controlled by other people, do you see? They’ve got no say in who runs the city but they can damn well see to it that cockatoos aren’t lumped in with parrots. It’s not their fault. It’s just how things are.”
^^ That bit specifically.
Legislating parrots because that's the only thing you have control over. Not thinking about the bigger picture because what can you do? You can grumble and complain and make a fuss but you've got no power. Everyone has power over you. You've got to pay your rent, do your work, and the only place where you have any sort of control, any sort of importance, any power at all, is your parrot-fanciers club. Tiny tyrants looking for their one chance not to be a subordinate.
And Sacharissa is right, William doesn't understand and never will. He chose to be poor, chose to leave his family and privilege behind, chose to live that way. Nobody else got to choose. They were born unimportant.
It's what I think about when I'm stuck in some sort of stupid local meeting or arguing pointless discourse with somebody. Petty dictators of tiny, tiny kingdoms.
And you know what? Sometimes you've got to legislate parrots. If you're going to have a parrot competition, you've got to have rules. It is important. It just helps me keep my cool to remember that part of the reason it's so important is because it's all we've got.
