Are European Baby Formulas *Really* Better Than Ones Made in the US?
I live my life by the Reddit Click Theory (something I just now invented on the spot), which states: the number of clicks it takes to get to a piece of information on Reddit is directly correlated with its status as a conspiracy theory. One click? You're probably safe. Five clicks? You're in anti-vaxxer territory. Anyway, as I Googled "best baby formula" to feed my twin boys, Reddit threads professing the life-altering magic of HiPP, Holle, Kendamil, and other European baby formulas kept rising to the top. Upon further research, it became clear that there is a fairly sizable faction of parents who prefer the standards of European Union baby formulas to American recipes. "We dug into this trend in 2019, prior to the infant formula shortage," says Dina DiMaggio, MD, FAAP, medical research director at Bobbie Labs, an offshoot of the organic formula brand that supports research on infant feeding. "Our research, which focused on New York City-based parents, found that 20 percent of families were using illegally imported European infant formulas [bought through unregulated third-party websites]." Parents who utilize EU formulas regularly cite that the EU has stricter standards for baby formulas than in the United States, with non-GMO, grass-fed dairy, and organic ingredients being frequently thrown around. If you look at third-party sites, this is echoed in the reviews, which bemoan the use of corn syrup, pesticides, and sugar levels in American formulas. "The rise in this trend came while consumers were beginning to understand the difference between EU and US regulations in other product categories," says Dr. DiMaggio. "Just as people were taking a closer look at what was in the products they were purchasing for themselves, it's natural that they started to do the same for their babies." What Are the Main Differences Between EU and US Formulas? In scrutinizing labels, I found that both EU and US formulas contain the same key ingredients: a milk source (usually from cows; though sometimes sensitive formulas are made from goat's milk), lactose, vegetable oils, and whey protein. As with labels for personal care products, ingredients for baby formulas are listed with the ingredient that's in the largest quantity in the formula at the front of the label. Related: The Best Baby Formula of 2023, According to Reviewers Largely, the differences between formulas can be attributed to requirements that the Food and Drug Administration - which regulates baby formula in the United States - sets for brands to meet versus what the EU requires its formulas to meet. "Both the FDA and European Union have specific and strict standards for infant formula with nutrient requirements and labeling laws," says Anthony Porto, MD, FAAP, MPH, Chief Medical Director at Bobbie Labs. Let's take a closer look at where the regulating bodies' standards differ, shall we? 1. DHA The EU requires DHA - an omega-3 fatty acid that plays an important structural role for brain, skin, and eye development - to be between 20 to 50 milligrams per 100 calories; however, the FDA and US formulas have no DHA requirement. Though, importantly, many formula companies in the U.S. still enhance their formulas with DHA. 2. Carb Sources There are also differences in sugar in the varying formulas. "The EU also has a limit on how much of the carb source can come from an alternative sugar source other than lactose, which is the sugar found in breastmilk," says Dr. Porto. 3. Iron Most US formulas include more iron than formulas made in Europe. This is because the FDA requires US formulas to meet certain requirements for the level of 30 nutrients, one of them being iron. Formulas in the US are fortified with iron at 12 mg/dL. Okay, So What Should I Buy? Which formula to buy for your babe is a deeply personal decision. "It's important to remember that both US and European formulas provide safe and healthy nutrition for… https://www.popsugar.com/family/european-vs-american-formula-49314493?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

8 Healing Foods that Boost Your Brain Health & Supercharge Your Stomach
Following the Probiotic Diet Eating Plan will promote the growth of beneficial bacteria and other microbes in your intestines while starving the bad guys, leaving you feeling energized.
You’ll notice that many of the healing foods I recommend have gone through a fermentation process, which means they were cultured through the intentional growth of bacteria, yeast, or mold, a process as old as biblical times. Since refrigeration hadn’t been invented back then—and foods weren’t known to have a “shelf life”—people in ancient times didn’t have the option of freezing food or storing any foodstuffs inside a cool box. Instead, they learned how to preserve foods for a short time through the process of fermentation.
Our ancestors knew the value of fermented food, if for no other reason than fermented foods kept them from starving between harvests. They fermented milk and vegetables not only to preserve these foods—don’t forget that you couldn’t run down to your local Walmart in 300 BC if you needed a gallon of milk—but to take advantage of the health benefits of fermentation. I would imagine that the Bulgarians of Metchnikoff’s day who consumed “sour milk” did so because they instinctively knew that cultured milk promoted intestinal health. Although they knew nothing about helpful flora, they listened to their gut and knew they felt better—and lived longer—when they consumed gourds of cultured dairy.
Healing Foods to Focus On
In general terms, here’s an outline of foods that you need to be focusing on when you’re on the Probiotic Diet:
1. Healthy meats
I strongly urge that you purchase and prepare meat from organically raised cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, and venison that graze on nature’s bountiful grasses and fish caught in the wild like salmon, tuna, or sea bass. Grass-fed meat is leaner and is lower in calories than grain-fed beef. Organic and grass-fed beef is higher in gut-friendly omega-3 fatty acids and important vitamins like B12 and vitamin E, and way better for you than assembly-line cuts of flank steak from hormone-injected cattle eating pesticide-sprayed feed laced with antibiotics.
Fish with fins and scales caught from oceans and rivers are lean sources of protein and provide essential amino acids in abundance. Wild-caught fish are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which can reduce inflammation in diseases of the gut such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Wild-caught fish can be purchased in natural food stores and fish markets, but supermarkets are stocking these types of foods in greater quantities these days. Some of the best fish to eat are wild-caught salmon, high omega-3 tuna, sardines, mackerel, and herring.
2. Raw milk and cultured dairy products from cows, goats, and sheep
The consumption of cultured dairy is absolutely critical to the success of the Probiotic Diet. Raw milk provides important enzymes and good bacteria that are crucial to probiotic support for the gut. These enzymes and bacteria aren’t found in pasteurized milk since they’re inconveniently destroyed during the pasteurization process. Raw milk contains lactic acid bacteria that can kill certain pathogens and thereby prevent disease, and provide more calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and sulfur than pasteurized, homogenized dairy.
The best dairy products are the lacto-fermented kind—yogurt, kefir, hard cheeses (preferably aged), cream cheese, cottage cheese, and cultured cream. You can shop for them at natural food supermarkets in certain states, but the best sources of raw cultured dairy are found at local farms. (Visit www.RealMilk.com for a farm near you.)
Another advantage to eating cultured dairy is that those who are lactose-intolerant—and many with digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome are sensitive to lactose—can often stomach fermented dairy products because they contain little or no residual lactose, which is the type of sugar in milk that many find hard to digest.
Certified organic whole milk kefir, sold in ready-to-drink quart bottles, is a tart-tasting, thick beverage containing naturally occurring bacteria and yeasts that work synergistically to provide superior health benefits. Kefir is also a great base ingredient to build smoothies around: just add eight ounces of kefir into a blender, an assortment of frozen berries or fruits, a spoonful of raw honey, maybe some multi collagen or bone broth protein powder, and you’re well on the way to churning up a delicious, satisfying smoothie.
As for yogurt, if you shop at a health food store, I prefer you consume yogurts not made from cow’s milk. You’ll be better off purchasing yogurts derived from goat’s milk and sheep’s milk, which are easier on stomachs as well as less allergenic because they do not contain the same complex proteins found in pasteurized cow’s milk. Goat’s milk and sheep’s milk yogurts are readily available at natural grocers, although my personal favorite—the yogurt made from sheep’s milk—is more difficult to find in stock but can often be ordered if you ask the store dairy manager. If you are able to find raw cow’s milk yogurt, it can be wonderful for your health.
One thing I don’t like in Breaking the Vicious Cycle is that Elaine Gottschall never discussed the differences between pasteurized was better for you. In fact, she stressed that you should consume pasteurized dairy, presumably because of the conventional wisdom that pasteurization kills unwanted or deadly microbes when, in reality, heating milk to 161 degrees also destroys the beneficial bacteria and probiotics in the milk or yogurt product.
Mrs. Gottschall’s mindset—and I know this from having many over-the-phone conversations with her (we never met in person)—was that she wanted the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to be user-friendly for the masses. That’s why she recommended foods that you could pick up at any corner supermarket: conventional eggs, pasteurized and homogenized dairy, conventionally raised chicken and beef, and fruits and vegetables from “agribusiness”—the huge conglomerations that boost yields (and therefore profits) by using persistent pesticides and fertilizers that leave toxic residues in the fruits and vegetables you consume.
Mrs. Gottschall was also not overly concerned with artificial colors and artificial sweeteners, and she even said it was okay to “add a crushed saccharin tablet” to sweeten a glass of wine. I hold the opposite view: low-calorie artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharine, and sucralose (found in those blue, pink, and yellow packets on restaurant tables) are practically poison in my eyes because of their alleged link to many health problems, including cancer. From all the studies I’ve seen, I think you’d be crazy to get within ten feet of them.
3. High omega-3 eggs

Free-range eggs from hens that roam around a pasture instead of being caged throughout their short lives have the highest-quality protein of any food, except for mothers’ breast milk. But the main reason I’m a huge fan of eggs in the Probiotic Diet is because of their high concentration of omega-3 fats.
So what are omega-3 fatty acids? Omega-3s are a type of fat that the body needs to run the gastrointestinal system. They manufacture and repair cell membranes and hormones, balance the nervous system, and expel harmful waste products. They are essential to health because the body cannot naturally manufacture its own omega-3 fatty acids.
The Probiotic Diet is designed to increase your consumption of omega-3 fats and decrease your consumption of another fatty acid known as omega-6s. Omega-3s and omega-6s are the only two essential fatty acids (EFAs) that our bodies must have because they regulate body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, fertility, and conception. The problem is that ever since Élie Metchnikoff was alive, our diets have flip-flopped. We receive very little omega-3s (because we don’t eat foods like wild-caught fish and pasture-raised eggs) and too many omega-6 fatty acids because omega-6s are found in sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, and soybean oils, which, in turn, are found in processed foods and refined grains. If your favorite meal is chicken nuggets and French fries, then you’re eating a ton of omega-6 fatty acids, and that’s not good for you or your digestive tract.
Since the typical American diet is weighted heavily toward omega-6 fatty acids instead of omega-3s, we typically have a ratio of 20 omega-6s to one omega-3, or 20:1. That’s way too high and increases the likelihood of inflammatory and autoimmune disease, which strains your terrain. Following the Probiotic Diet should greatly improve your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio to something like 4:1, which is the bull’s eye you want to shoot for.
4. Extra-virgin coconut oil and grass-fed butter
These two important foods have anti-microbial saturated fats that can work wonders for people with digestive disorders. Coconut oil is so beneficial to digestive health that years ago a person suffering from Crohn’s disease wrote “Dear Abby” and insisted that eating macaroons eliminated symptoms of the disease. She was talking about your standard-recipe macaroons, the ones with white sugar, white flour, bad oils containing omega-6 fatty acids… but she included six to eight grams of coconut oil! Just the addition of extra-virgin coconut oil to a recipe that would normally be anathema to the Probiotic Diet helped out someone with Crohn’s disease, and the reason why was because of the anti-microbial fatty acids in coconut oil.
Coconut oil, a miracle food that few people have heard of, has healthy fats that slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, thereby keeping blood sugar levels on an even keel. It’s easy to add to your diet; all you have to do is think intentionally about adding extra-virgin coconut oil whenever you pull out a saucepan to cook scrambled eggs, glaze diced onions, or heat up leftovers. I even add a tablespoon of coconut oil to my Vitamix blender when I whip up a delicious smoothie for breakfast.
Extra-virgin coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids such as lauric, caprylic, and capric acids, which are anti-viral and anti-fungal. Since most people suffering from digestive problems have an overgrowth of yeast and potentially high levels of virus in their systems, this obscure food can work wonders. I recommend those with digestive problems consume two to four tablespoons of extra-virgin coconut oil per day. A side benefit of extra-virgin coconut oil is that it helps you balance your weight whether you are under- or overweight. Consuming extra-virgin coconut oil to the tune of four tablespoons per day is a great way for those who are underweight to pack on the pounds.
Grass-fed butter, or raw butter, is good for your digestion because it has compounds that help repair the gut lining. Organic butter also contains anti-microbial fatty acids, including butyric acid, which has strong anti-fungal effects in the digestive tract. The superb fatty acids in butter help heal the mucosal lining and provide an environment for beneficial microflora to colonize. Butter also contains glycosphingolipids, which protect you against infection.
5. Cultured and fermented vegetables and other “living” foods
Raw cultured or fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut, pickled carrots, beets, or cucumbers supply the body with lots of probiotics. Although these fermented vegetables are often greeted with upturned noses at the dinner table, these foods help reestablish natural balance to your digestive system. Cultured vegetables like sauerkraut are brimming with vitamins, such as vitamin C, and contain almost four times the nutrients as unfermented cabbage. The lactobacilli in fermented vegetables contain digestive enzymes that help break down food and increase its digestibility.
I’ll have a lot more to say about fermented vegetables in the next chapter, “Probiotic Foods from Around the World,” but let me put a plug in for three raw foods that are essential to the Probiotic Diet. They are avocados and chia and flaxseeds.
I’ll grant you that a lot of raw veggies can give you a problem if you have an acute inflammatory condition or an ulceration in the gut, but avocados and chia and flaxseeds are foods high in healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats (in the case of avocados) and omega-3 fatty acids from chia and flax. Indeed, chia’s fiber-rich seeds have the highest percentage of omega-3s of any plant, including flaxseeds. These three foods are high in protein, too, so if you’re a vegetarian, make sure you’re eating plenty of avocados and chia and flaxseeds. Natural food stores carry wonderful chia seed and flaxseed products.
6. Bone broth
Your entire gut lining is made up of collagen, which means you need to consume foods that support collagen production. Bone broth can help repair the gut lining, and it’s also easy to digest, because it’s in an amino acid form. Bone broth is high in proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline, as well as glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid— all of which help heal and reseal your gut lining.
7. Herbs and spices
Some cultures consume a lot more spices per capita than we do in a lot of westernized countries. Nutrient density-wise, herbs are powerful. Ginger is the ultimate healing herb for your gut. It’s slightly warming and anti-inflammatory. Peppermint is also excellent. You can consume peppermint as an essential oil, adding a drop or two to a smoothie or other recipe, to help cool and soothe the digestive lining. You can also add a little cardamon to your coffee or a smoothie, as well as consider taking licorice root and fennel.
8. Sprouted, soaked, or sour-leavened grains
I totally agree with Mrs. Gottschall that grains are problematic to those with gut issues. But there are ways to neutralize these disaccharides and that’s through consuming grains that have sprouted, been soaked overnight in water, or leavened with a sourdough culture. A whole grain sourdough bread, for instance, would have less disaccharides and be in a form that most people can tolerate. The issue with grains doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach.

Deciding to bottle feed your child can be a hard choice to make. You have to ponder why you trust it's ideal to bottle feed instead of breastfeed your kid. Having settled on your choice to bottle feed, you ought to likewise consider the kind of recipe milk that is best for your infant.
Tumblr media
Recipe milk comes in 3 structures: instant, concentrate and powder. Every ha its points of interest and hindrances. Instant milk recipe is the most effortless to utilize; you should simply open the compartment and feed your infant its substance. The fundamental disservice with instant equation is it is the most costly alternative, so in case you're attempting to spare pennies it may not be the best decision. Equation concentrate is less expensive than instant, however you do need to include bubbled water. The least expensive and most broadly utilized type of equation milk is powdered recipe. Just as having the benefit of being modest, it is likewise the most straightforward to store. Both instant and concentrate should be put away in the refrigerator though you just need to put away equation produced using powder, after it has been blended in with water.
As you'll before long find, you should be readied when you travel with your infant. You have to bring all that you have to set up your youngster's recipe. In case you're anticipating remaining some place away from home, you have to consider: will where you're staying have an ice chest? Will it have offices to give you bubbled water in case you're utilizing concentrate or powder? Shouldn't something be said about cleaning offices? Would you be able to connect your container sterilizer? Regardless of whether you are utilizing concentrate or powder (and attempting to spare pennies) I would firmly suggest getting some instant infant recipe and keeping it put away in the ice chest. You would then be able to utilize it as a reserve for when you have to make an excursion out some place.
Just as coming in three structures, child recipe comes in various kinds: the primary ones being bovine's milk and soybean. Notwithstanding these fundamental recipe types, you can likewise discover lactose free equation, recipe enhanced with DHA and ARA, and equation for preemies.
By a wide margin the most famous and presumably the best for your youngster is infant recipe produced using cow's milk. Picking the correct brand is an individual decision. All brands currently sold in Western nations will meet their administration's rules. Be that as it may, various brands will contain various degrees of sugar and protein. All infant milk recipes are invigorated with iron and Vitamin D (these can be inadequate in breast milk) and contain lactose (milk sugar). Brands, for example, Similac Advance, Enfamil Lipil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme are made with lactose and cow's milk based proteins.
Soy based recipe is presently getting increasingly well known. Dissimilar to dairy animals' milk it doesn't contain lactose. In the event that your youngster has lactose narrow mindedness, at that point soy equation milk might be directly for your kid. Brands incorporate Enfamil ProSobee, Similac Isomil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme Soy. There has been some contention regarding whether soy protein can cause long haul wellbeing suggestions to babies who are taken care of soy-based recipe. Notwithstanding, an ongoing report, drove by Dr Brian L. Strom from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, indicated no distinction in the long haul wellbeing impacts of soy baby equation and those dependent on bovine's milk. In any case, in the event that you have any questions, at that point stay with child recipe milk that is produced using dairy animals' milk.
youtube
Goat's milk is picking up in ubiquity and some vibe it is better for infant and the earth. Utilizing goat's milk is likely fine; be that as it may, goat's milk does just contain around 10% of the folic corrosive that is found in bovine's milk. Along these lines, on the off chance that you are intending to utilize goat's milk, discover a brand that has been strengthened with folic corrosive. On the in addition to side, goat's milk equation contains far more elevated levels of copper and cancer prevention agent selenium. Some additionally accept that infants have a lactose narrow mindedness will improve by changing from cow's to goat's milk. While the facts confirm that Goats milk contains lower levels of lactose, in the event that your youngster is lactose-narrow minded, at that point you are likely best changing to soy based equation or a lactose free recipe of cow's milk.
Lactose free recipes, for example, Lactofree and Similac Lactose free are made without lactose, however have dairy animals' milk proteins in them. Infants are not for the most part thought to be brought into the world with lactose narrow mindedness, so these equations are normally not required. In the event that your youngster is encountering issues with dairy animals' equation, look for proficient guidance before changing to a lactose free recipe or soy-based equation.
Other newborn child recipes incorporate Enfamil AR (hostile to spewing forth), which is believed to be useful for babies with reflux and untimely equations, for example, Similac Special Care and Enfamil Premature. Again, you most likely ought to never need to purchase this sort of recipe as your child's reflux is presumably being brought about by something different. Once more, address your primary care physician before changing to this sort of equation.
Recently, new newborn child recipes have been presented that are enhanced with DHA and ARA, which are found in breast milk and are thought to help with an infant's improvement. Brands of these enhanced recipe incorporate Enfamil Lipil, Similac Advance, and Nestle Good Start Supreme DHA and ARA. Converse with your primary care physician about these and what benefits, assuming any, they could offer your kid.
Having perused the above it is trusted that picking the best infant milk recipe for your youngster has been made simpler. On the off chance that you have any questions or further inquiries converse with your pediatrician, they will have the option to give you more data pretty much all parts of container taking care of your child.

The 7 Best Supplements for Your Dog’s Raw Diet
Tumblr media
Many dog parents have made or are making the switch to raw food diet for the multitude of benefits it provides: fresh breath and clean teeth, healthier skin and coat, better emotional and mental health, and better digestion. Much of this is made possible because raw food doesn’t preserve or process any of the whole foods that go into it - processes that may ensure longer shelf life but that strip away nutrition at its source.
But does feeding fresh, raw food mean that adding supplements or other fresh foods is no longer necessary?
We don’t think so, and for two main reasons:
Some ingredients don’t freeze or dehydrate well, so adding them as fresh ingredients is essential for unlocking their nutritional potential and providing your dog a complete diet.
Supplementing, whether by adding fresh ingredients or appropriate supplements, is a way of individualizing your dog’s food to fit their precise dietary, lifestyle, and wellness needs.
Tumblr media
Like with any diet, make sure that you’re feeding a nutritionally balanced food that's made from reliably sourced ingredients. In this blog, we’re using Formule Raw’s frozen beef formula. This raw recipe is made from 90% antibiotic- and hormone-free beef, 10% fruits and vegetables, and is nutritionally balanced for all breeds and ages of dogs. Not to mention: dogs love it!
So let’s take a look at our favourite supplements that will boost the nutritional availability of any raw food diet:
Tumblr media
Happy Days Raw Fermented Goat Milk is easy to feed and looks so delicious that we could almost drink it!
1. Goat milk
Unlike the store-bought cow milk that so many of us are accustomed to, goat milk is more easily digestible and less likely to cause an allergic reaction, thanks to low quantities of a number of proteins found in cow milk that have been linked to allergies. Raw goat milk, which preserves many of its naturally-occurring nutrients, also contains lactase enzymes. This means that even those with lactose intolerance - including dogs - can digest goat milk without any issues.
Goat milk is often considered one of the most complete sources of nutrition available. It contains a balanced source of protein, electrolytes, trace elements, digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, making it a powerhouse of highly digestible nutrition. Raw goat milk that has been fermented - a process that preserves the natural microorganisms within - contains over 200 probiotics that boost digestive function and immune support. And as we’re coming to find out, your dog’s digestive system plays a huge role not only in their overall health, but in their emotional and mental health, as well.
Best of all, this supplement is suitable for daily use, especially for maintenance of chronic issues such as poor digestion and even liver and kidney disease; or simply add it as a probiotic boost!
Tumblr media
The Honest Kitchen’s Beef Bone Broth comes in a powdered form, but can easily be rehydrated and even made into delicious frozen treats!
2. Bone Broth
Bone broth is made by taking bones, especially collagen-dense bones and tissues around the joints, and simmering them in water and an acid (like vinegar) for 24 hours or more. This long process helps to draw out all the beneficial nutrition found in the bones themselves and make them easily digestible.
You’ve probably already heard of bone broth, as it has become somewhat of a celebrity in the health food world - but for good reason. Full of minerals, bone broth contains a number of compounds that help protect and heal joints, particularly glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid.
And with the addition of turmeric in The Honest Kicthen’s Beef Bone Broth, which acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, bone broth also makes for a restorative supplement for digestive upsets. It’s ideal for a dog who’s feeling under the weather, or as an intermittent supplement for a dog who needs an extra spring in his step.
Tumblr media
Fresh blueberries and a spoonful of veggie and fruit mix - puréed cranberries, broccoli, raspberries, and ground flax seeds.
3. Fresh Greens
Dogs are facultative carnivores, meaning that they can survive on vegetarian diets, but thrive as meat-eaters. The amount of fresh fruits and vegetables you give to your dog is entirely up to you and your dog’s individual needs. But no matter the quantity, fresh greens help provide and can even accentuate many of the vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants otherwise unavailable to dogs in a purely meat-based diet.
So selecting greens that compliment your dog’s dietary requirements is key. Some of these include: blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, pumpkin, broccoli, kale, spinach, kelp, and various microgreens. Blueberries, for example, contain manganese, a trace mineral that helps metabolism protein and carbohydratess, whereas strawberries can even help whiten your dog’s teeth!
But because fruits are a natural source of sugar, avoid feeding excessive amounts. And because not all dogs will take to eating whole fruits or vegetables, nor is it always feasible for them to easily digest them, blending (and freezing) greens is a painless way of providing a green boost to your dog’s health.
Tumblr media
Fresh, organic eggs cracked open and ready to be slurped up!
4. Eggs
No matter what diet you feed your dog, whole, fresh eggs are one of the most balanced and bioavailable sources of additional nutrition you can provide. They’re inexpensive and delicious, but don’t shy away from pasture-raised and organic eggs - you are what you eat, after all, and pasture-raised chickens lay eggs that have a higher nutritional value than conventional eggs, with higher levels of protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and even fatty acids.
Eggs can be fed raw or soft-boiled, and are great as added protein after a long or active day. As an added enrichment, raw, pasture-laid eggs can be fed whole, as the shell and membrane contain healthy amounts of calcium and phosphorous, as well as other minerals and proteins that play a role in maintaining good bone and joint health.
Tumblr media
Bonnie & Clyde’s Wild Omega-3 Fish Oil uses sustainably caught wild sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, and doesn’t have any funky fish smell!
5. Fish Oil
Fish oil is generally made from fat that’s extracted from fish tissue, but can also be made from the livers of some fish - think cod liver oil. It's most known for being rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, that are more potent than those found in plant-based sources. A healthy ratio of omega-3s has been linked to healthy growth and maintenance of your dog’s heart, brain, eyes, skin, and even has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s an all-around powerful supplement for mobility and overall health, particularly for aging dogs.
However, fish oil degrades quickly and doesn’t freeze well, so serving it fresh, preferably right before a meal, is the best way to provide its benefits to your dog. Alternatively, both hemp seed oil and flax seed oil contain a comparable amount of essential fatty acids and are just as beneficial when added to a raw food diet.
Tumblr media
Raw honey from your local beekeeper works best!
6. Raw honey
A true product of its local environment, honey is made from the nectar of flowering plants, which is then further broken down in the beehive. Raw, unpasteurized, and unfiltered honey is exactly as you would find it in the hive itself. Pasteurization and filtration may make the honey smoother and give it a longer shelf life, but they ultimately strip away the most nutritious aspects of honey: its many important antioxidants and local pollen.
Antioxidants help protect your dog’s cells against free radicals, which play a role in heart disease, cancer, and some chronic illnesses. But pollen? For dogs that suffer from seasonal allergies, exposing them to incremental amounts of local pollen may alleviate their symptoms.
On top of that, honey has a wonderfully sweet flavour that even dogs adore, so it can be added as a topper to any food to entice picky eaters. Certain kinds of raw honey, notably Manuka Honey from Australia and New Zealand, possess antibacterial qualities and can even be used to treat wounds.
Tumblr media
RawPaw’s Green Lipped Mussel powder is made fresh from whole New Zealand mussels.
7. Green Lipped Mussel
Green Lipped Mussels (GLMs), or New Zealand mussels are a type of shellfish found only along the coasts of New Zealand. What set these small, green-streaked mussels apart from many other sustainable food sources are the extraordinary health benefits they possess: even in a powdered extract form, GLMs contain very high concentrations of Omega-3s, which, as said before, play a role in heart and brain health.
Most importantly, GLMs contain high quantities of glucosamine and chondroitin. Both of these not only reduce inflammation and discomfort from regular wear and tear or from degenerative inflammatory conditions like arthritis, but also help build and maintain healthy cartilage and bone - making GLM a safe treatment for joint problems and as a preventative treatment for active dogs. Given that 50% of dogs over the age of eight develop inflammatory joint conditions, GLMs are a highly accessible form of pain and inflammation management. Best of all, this powerful supplement has no known side-effects!
Green Lipped Mussel powder can be fed as a topping to food, mixed into liquids, or even fed as ice cubes.
Tumblr media
Supplementing your dog’s diet doesn’t have to be hard, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly beneficial. Every dog can at the very least benefit from the addition of probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, and fresh greens to help to promote a healthy body and mind.
Because each dog is unique, differences in breed, size, age, personal history, and even dietary preferences will influence what kinds of supplements will be the most beneficial for them. So if you’ve been inspired by any of the supplements here and you’re curious about what you could be adding to your dog’s diet, come visit us at the store! We always get really excited when someone asks us about supplements - even for cats!

Now, as for which one is the best? There aren’t as many goat milk formula options as there are cow’s milk — here are the ones I’ve found: Kabrita USA, Holle Goat, NannyCare, and Sammy’s Milk. Out of these, Kabrita USA is absolutely, by far, the best Goat Milk Baby Formula on the market today.
If I was going to give my own child a goat milk baby formula, I would choose Kabrita USA (not to be confused with Kabrita.com!) Kabrita is unique because it contains the beneficial type of palm oil (more info on that here), it’s certified glyphosate-free, it adds whey protein to model the whey-casein ratio of breast milk, it adds lactose to model the carbohydrates in breastmilk (vs. maltodextrin which lower quality formulas use), it has no glucose syrup solids added, and it has DHA/ARA added.
Kabrita isoffering 10% off all orders with the coupon code GENTLEKABRITA.
Here are more details on what to look for in a goat’s milk formula – and Kabrita meets all of these guidelines!
#1: Ideally organic, or at least non-GMO/Free-range. If the milk is imported from the EU or NZ that’s even better, because you end up with higher standards for the treatment of animals and the processing of milk. Note: Holle Goat is the only formula that’s officially organic, and you can buy it in bulk with deep discounts here!
#2: A formula that simulates breast milk with their whey/casein ratio: to avoid digestion issues, constipation, gas, discomfort in babies! This can be accomplished by: a whey/casein ratio similar to breastmilk. Since breast milk contains more whey than casein – and goat milk contains much more casein than whey – it’s crucial that formula adds goat whey protein.
#3: Addition of lactose, to simulate breastmilk. Breast milk contains more than one and a half times the amount of lactose as goat milk. So, it’s essential that goat milk formula adds carbohydrate to meet babies’ needs.
#4: No synthetic ingredients like taurine, L-Carnitine, etc.
#5: No maltodextrin or syrup solids used.
#6: DHA/ARA and Prebiotics added, and the right composition of fatty acids (this just saves you the time/energy to supplement yourself!) Since 20-25% of the fat in breast milk is palmitic acid, most of which exists in a specific structure, it’s important that the fat in goat milk formula simulate this structure. (Note: Kabrita is the only goat milk formula that uses a fat blend with beta palmitate. This blend is designed to simulate the fat found in breast milk. Kabrita does use hexane to extract their DHA/ARA, but assures me that there is no hexane present in their final product.)
So how do the other formulas measure up? The chart below outlines the 4 goat milk formulas on the market today, ranked from best to least-desirable! As I mentioned, I would choose Kabrita USA, but if you wanted to purchase one of the other options, here are my recommended retailers for each – and a couple reasons why they are ranked second, third or fourth!
Nanny Care: OrganicStart (use the code PICKY10 for a 10% discount!), OrganicStartWholesale (direct link to Stage 1 here), BabyKindMarket. No Non-GMO/Organic certifications, but their milk is sourced from New Zealand which has higher standards than the US. No soy based ingredients, maltodextrin, and only two of the synthetic ingredients that I recommend avoiding. They are ranked lower than Kabrita because they don’t have a whey-casein ratio as close to breastmilk as Kabrita, they don’t have DHA or prebiotics added, and they have two synthetic ingredients added!
Holle Goat: OrganicStart (use the code PICKY10 for a 10% discount!), OrganicStartWholesale (direct link to Stage 1 here), BabyKindMarket, OrganicBabyFood. This is the only officially organic formula! Why it’s ranked 3rd even though it’s organic: it doesn’t have a whey-casein ratio similar to breastmilk, and I have heard it can constipate babies more than Kabrita or NannyCare. It also uses maltodextrin and palm oil, which I don’t like. And it has no DHA or prebiotics added.
Sammy’s Milk: I think you can only purchase it through their website. Why it’s tied with Holle for 3rd: They use molasses instead of lactose which I don’t love – since that’s just added sugar. They had a recall a while back, so I’ve been a little skeptical about it. But they are free range and Non GMO, they don’t have palm oil or soy added, and they don’t use hexane to extract their DHA. So it’s kind of a toss up between whether you prefer organic or non-hexane extracted DHA + no palm oil when you’re comparing Sammy’s Milk to Holle!
Best Goat Milk Formula Ranking:
I hope this helps you navigate the world of goat milk formulas! If you have any questions at all, please leave a comment – I respond to every single one! 🙂

Best Dog Food for Goldendoodles – The Top 7 Brands
Tumblr media
If you are looking for the best dog food for your Goldendoodle, you should research and then buy the food. There are various types of puppy food available in the market. Which one is the best puppy food, or best for pups especially?
In today’s article, we will know which dog food would be best for your dog. It would be best to note that GoldenDoodle puppies, senior puppy dogs, and adult dogs have different foods and additional nutritional requirements.
Today we will explain how you can choose the best dog food for your Goldendoodle puppy, keeping in mind the size of your dog.
How to Pick the Most Suitable Dog Food for Goldendoodle Puppies
In general, one of the recommendations is that the best affordable dog food for Goldendoodles includes high-quality protein sources such as beef, lamb, turkey, pork, and venison for your dogs.
They are important for supporting and encouraging ongoing amino acid production growth and development. If the food contains DHA, ARA, and other essential fatty acids, then that food is good as these are present only in the dog’s mother’s milk.
In short, the food is rich in protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin, and minerals for complete and balanced nutrition for your pups.
What Are the Nutritional Needs of Goldendoodles?
Dogs have the same basic nutritional requirements, disregarding their life stage. It is simply the balance of those nutrients that changes from puppyhood into your pet’s senior years.
See the list of ingredients on food packaging—listed ingredients in order of how much food exists in each. Now we are going to know The Nutritional Needs Of Goldendoodles.
 1. Protein
The most important ingredient in a portion of dog food for your doodle is protein, which is essential for healthy growth.
Dog food must include two or three proteins derived from whole meats, fish, or meat meals and should appear on the product packaging as the first two ingredients.
You can also find vegetables that contain protein. That’s fine, as long as the food has more meat than plant protein.
 2. Fibre
Fibre is necessary for maintaining your dog’s healthy digestion. Although meat and meat foods contain a certain amount of fibre, most dog foods contain vegetables or rice to add bulk.
However, steer clear of food that includes a lot of grain. Cereals don’t have much nutritional value, and Usually, it’s counted as padding.
  3. Fat
Most of your dog’s energy needs come from the fat in his diet. Good fat sources in a dog diet include flaxseed, chicken fat, and canola oil.
High-quality foods also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for good skin and coat conditions and brain and eye development.
 4. Vitamins and Minerals
Most good-quality dog food contains additional vitamins and minerals to help keep your puppy in good condition.
You do not need to buy a separate vitamin supplement for your pet. In general, you must avoid very cheap dog food. I recommend you buy the best food you can afford.
Cheap food can make your pet sick, resulting in an expensive trip to the vet clinic.
Best Puppy Food for Goldendoodles
Puppy Food For Goldendoodles depends on how old your dog is because the nutrition needs of puppies, adults, and seniors are different in golden doodle dogs. If you give senior dog food to your puppies, they can get joint damage.

What makes A2 Desi Cow Ghee better than ordinary ghee and cooking oils?
A2 Cow Ghee: What is it?
A1 beta-casein protein and A2 beta-casein protein are the two main types of protein found in cow's milk. Recent studies have demonstrated that A2 protein is healthier than A1 protein. Ghee made from A2 milk contains only A2 Beta casein, which is the primary component of ghee. This type of protein is only found in the milk of a few native Indian breeds of cows, Indian buffaloes, goats, lambs, and camels.
A2 Desi Ghee: How is it Made?
A2 Ghee is made from pure-bred Gir cows' milk of the highest quality. By using a "Hand-Churned Bilona Process," Agamya's A2 Ghee minimizes heat and preserves the most nutrients compared to ghee produced mechanically.
Our handcrafted, artisan A2 Desi cow ghee is produced in modest quantities from milk derived from Indian desi cows; this milk is significantly healthier because it contains only A2 beta-casein protein. Traditional Bilona processes are used to culture 30 liters of pure A2 milk into curd and churn it into butter. A kilogramme of pure, nutritious, and healthful Desi ghee is produced by boiling this butter over a cow dung cake and wood fire.
What Sets A2 Ghee Apart from Regular Ghee?
The variation between the A1 and A2 proteins
A1 beta-casein protein and A2 beta-casein protein are two types of beta-casein protein found in cow milk. Researchers have discovered that A2 protein is superior to A1 protein and is also healthier. Human bodies are highly damaged by A1 protein, which is present in regular ghee. Conversely, Desi ghee contains A2 protein, which makes it healthier.
The Production Process
A2 ghee is produced by the Biolina procedure. In this traditional method, milk is manually churned to create ghee, preserving all of the vital nutrients. The butter is then cooked for a protracted period of time over a low flame to create pure A2 ghee. In contrast, normal ghee is made from A1 milk. A motor is used to churn milk and add various chemicals, but the resulting ghee is of poor quality and should not be consumed.
Results for Health
To maintain good health, Desi ghee has a lower fat and cholesterol content than regular ghee. Furthermore, Desi ghee contains amino acids that promote body fat burning and support weight loss.
A2 Desi Ghee: Is it superior to cooking oil?
The absence of polyunsaturated lipids distinguishes A2 desi cow ghee from other vegetable oils. It contains antioxidants that help the body detoxify. Despite its high smoke point, Pure Desi Ghee can be used for cooking and frying food at high temperatures. In addition, it is a good source of vitamin A, D, E, and K.
It is for this reason that desi ghee is better than other cooking oils. A variety of health benefits are also associated with it, unlike cooking oils that are known to be extremely harmful to health.
Children's Desi Ghee
Because it includes significant levels of fat-soluble vitamins including A, D, E, and K, ghee is regarded as a natural powerhouse. These vitamins are essential for boosting the immunological and nervous systems. Additionally, ghee helps the body absorb vitamins and minerals from diet, which strengthens immunity.
Ghee is a reliable source of energy and is especially advantageous for young, developing children and nursing mothers.
Vitamin K, which is present in ghee, promotes bone growth.
Ghee promotes healthy digestion, immunity, and vision.
DHA, which is present in ghee, aids in brain growth and memory improvement.
Ghee has a lot of calories, which aids in weight gain in infants who have recently stopped receiving breast milk.
A2 Benefits of Indian Cow Ghee
The main ingredient in Vedic culture, ghee enriches life with Sattvic characteristics. One of the best sources of linoleic acid is A2 gir cow ghee, which also provides a wide range of health advantages.
Tumblr media
Enhances Immunity
Vitamins A, E, K, and D, which are crucial elements that support the development of immunity, are among the many necessary vitamins included in A2 ghee. Additionally, A2 ghee strengthens intestinal health, which boosts immunity by cleansing the body. Agamya's A2 Desi Ghee is a potent blend of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that prevents the majority of ailments. Additionally helpful for enhancing bone density is A2 Ghee.
Gives children nutrition
It boosts cognitive function and lowers ADHD and other neurological issues because it contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. It is one of the most important sources of energy for growing children. Different fat-soluble vitamins in A2 Ghee are essential for ensuring nutrition and boosting immunity. Ghee plays an important role in maintaining health due to its inclusion in many Ayurvedic medications.
Improves Digestion
In order to break down food, A2 gir cow ghee stimulates the production of digestive acids. It prevents constipation because it contains fat-soluble vitamins. A2 Desi ghee is known for its detoxifying properties due to the butyric acid it contains.
Conditions Skin
When used on dry, burned, or even irritated skin, A2 desi ghee can treat several skin conditions. Using ghee on your lips can prevent chapped lips by keeping them moist and supple. A combination of ghee and milk is also known to improve the health of the skin and hair.
Promotes Strong Bones
The body's ability to use calcium and other minerals depends on vitamin K2, a fat-soluble vitamin found in A2 Ghee. In the right amounts, vitamin K2 promotes healthy bone development and prevents tooth decay. It prevents bone deterioration by keeping your bones strong. You may be able to ease joint discomfort by consuming ghee regularly or by getting a body massage on a regular basis.
Increased Smoke Point
When heated at a high temperature, A2 gir cow ghee doesn't emit poisonous fumes since its smoke/burn point is greater than cooking oils. High temperatures typically produce toxic fumes from cooking oils.
Beneficial for Lactose and Casein Sensitivities
Because pure ghee has been skimmed and strained, most people who are sensitive to lactose or casein don't have a problem.
Ghee Helps You Lose Weight
Weight loss is possible as a result of the energy-rich medium-chain fatty acids found in ghee. In addition to attracting other fats, ghee is said to remove poisons that are usually difficult to expel.
Desi Ghee Natural Treatments
For shiny, healthy hair, use A2 Desi Ghee
Cold-pressed coconut oil and olive oil are combined with two tablespoons of ghee. When it has boiled for one minute, let it cool a bit before applying it to the hair. Wash it off with shampoo after it has been on all night. The milk protein in ghee strengthens the roots and adds shine to the hair.
A2 Desi Ghee For Chapped, Dry Lips Apply ghee to your lips before going to bed. You should scrub off the flaky dried ghee as soon as you wake up. Follow the procedure daily for lips that are supple and smooth beyond your wildest dreams.
Easy home cure for a dry cough The best cough cure is to sauté 3–4 crushed peppercorns in ghee before straining.

What Type of Formula Milk to Use?
Choosing to bottle feed your baby can be a hard decision to make. You need to think deeply about why you believe it's best to bottle feed rather than breastfeed your child. Having made your decision to bottle feed, you should also think about the type of formula milk that's best for your baby.
Tumblr media
Formula milk comes in 3 forms: ready-made, concentrate and powder. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Ready made milk formula is the easiest to use; all you need to do is open the container and feed your baby its contents. The main disadvantage with ready-made formula is it is the most expensive option, so if you're trying to save pennies it may not be the best choice. Formula concentrate is cheaper than ready-made, but you do have to add boiled water. The cheapest and most widely used form of formula milk is powdered formula. As well as having the advantage of being cheap, it is also the easiest to store. Both ready-made and concentrate need to be stored in the fridge whereas you only need to stored formula made from powder, after it has been mixed with water.
As you'll soon discover, you need to be prepared when you travel with your baby. You need to take along Alimentum Baby Formula everything you need to prepare your child's formula. If you're planning on staying somewhere away from home, you need to think about: will where you're staying have a fridge? Will it have facilities to provide you with boiled water if you're using concentrate or powder? What about cleaning facilities? Can you plug in your bottle sterilizer? Even if you are using concentrate or powder (and trying to save pennies) I would strongly recommend buying some ready-made baby formula and keeping it stored in the fridge. You can then use it as a standby for when you need to make a trip out somewhere.
As well as coming in three forms, baby formula comes in different types: the main ones being cow's milk and soybean. In addition to these basic formula types, you can also find lactose free formula, formula supplemented with DHA and ARA, and formula for preemies.
Tumblr media
By far the most popular and probably the best for your child is baby formula made from cow's milk. Choosing the right brand is a personal choice. All brands now sold in Western countries will meet their government's guidelines. However, different brands will contain different levels of sugar and protein. All baby milk formulas are fortified with iron and  Recalled Baby Formula Vitamin D (these can be lacking in breast milk) and contain lactose (milk sugar). Brands such as Similac Advance, Enfamil Lipil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme are made with lactose and cow's milk based proteins.
Soy based formula is now becoming more popular. Unlike cow's milk it does not contain lactose. If your child has lactose intolerance then soy formula milk may be right for your child. Brands include Enfamil ProSobee, Similac Isomil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme Soy. There has been some controversy as to whether soy protein can cause long term health implications to babies who are fed soy-based formula. However, a recent study, led by Dr Brian L. Strom from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, showed no difference in the long-term health effects of soy infant formula and those based on cow's milk. But if you have any doubts then stick with baby formula milk that is made from cow's milk.
Goat's milk is gaining in popularity and some feel it is better for baby and the environment. Using goat's milk is probably fine; however, goat's milk does only contain around 10% of the folic acid that is found in cow's milk. So, if you are planning to use goat's milk, find a brand that has been fortified with folic acid. On the plus side, goat's milk formula does contain far higher levels of copper and antioxidant selenium. Some also believe that babies have a lactose intolerance will do better by switching from cow's to goat's milk. Whilst it is true that Goats milk does contain lower levels of lactose, if your child is lactose-intolerant then you are probably best switching to soy based formula or a lactose free formula of cow's milk.
Lactose free formulas, such as Lactofree and Similac Lactose free are made without lactose, but do have cow's milk proteins in them. Babies are not usually thought to be born with lactose intolerance, so these formulas are usually not needed. If your child is experiencing problems with cow's formula, seek professional advice before switching to a lactose free formula or soy-based formula.

(1/2) Um. I hope this doesn't come off as combative, but as an agricultural scientist, what is your view on a vegan lifestyle (not just diet) purely from an environmental and sustainability point of view (excluding the ethical and health concerns)? Also do you believe rural animal husbandry can supplement the demands of the animal industry in absence of factory farms (which I believe are known to treat animals pretty brutally)?
(2/2) And also, in absence of a purely vegan diet, would a vegetarian focused diet (not excluding milk, eggs, honey etc) be more environmentally friendly? (I read that statistic somewhere about animal industry being a major contributor to global warming?)Hey don’t worry! It’s not combative! I’m going to give what is really just a general overview of some of the arguments. This is not an endorsement of industrial agriculture (who tf would defend that?). Instead this is a end-goal vegan vs sustainable agriculture argument. Under a cut because it’s long:
From an ecology of agriculture standpoint, a vegan lifestyle (and diet) make no sense. How can this be true, when we’ve been told every day for years that the best way to reduce our carbon footprint is to eat less meat? Because of the nature of nutrient cycling. Stay with me because this will get long. We all learned about the water cycle growing up, right? Precipitation -> Evaporation -> Condensation. Simple! But the other nutrient cycles are largely skipped over (in my experience).  First we have the nitrogen cycle:
Tumblr media
And the phosphorous cycle:
Tumblr media
If you notice, animals (in this case, cows fro simplicity) are present in both diagrams. Why? Because animals are required to close nutrient cycles - especially the phosphorous cycle! When a cow eats some grass, the grass sheds it’s roots to about the equivalent of the grass length above ground. These shed roots are immediately set upon by bacteria and fungi to break it down, turning the roots into available carbon and into a useable form of nitrogen. In addition, when a cow eats some grass, the cow processes through fermentation the cellulose, starches, and sugars in the grass and returns (via feces) bacteria rich, nutrient rich, water rich organic matter to the soil. It’s a short cut to what’s already happening underground! The cow also pees, giving urea and ammonia to the soil, not to mention water. As long as the soil isn’t disturbed (ex. plowed), then the fungi (mycorrhizae) in the soil can build a glomalin network. Why is this network important? “Mycorrhizae constitute a considerable sink of C [here C means carbon] into soil ecosystems, as plants allocate significant amounts of their photosynthates to their fungal partners (Finlay, 2008; van der Heijden et al., 2015).” This means that glomalin networks are carbon sinks! Additionally, the glomalin network stabilizes the soil and helps make nutrients bioavailable to plants. What does all this have to do with veganism?Veganism, especially a vegan lifestyle, seeks to remove animals from the land. No cows, no chickens, no sheep, no pigs, no goats. But without animals, you cannot nutrient cycle and are dependent on artificial nitrogen (a scientific byproduct of war) and mined phosphorus. Mining phosphorus is a harsh job and is environmentally disastrous. But even more concerning, is we are approaching ‘peak phosphorus’, where we cannot mine for any more. And we’ll have let it all run into the ocean where we cannot access it. Even more concerning, veganism is a diet founded upon annual crops - crops that grow in one season, then die. Annuals are the primary colonizers of disturbed soil. This is why fields are plowed for things like grains (which are annuals). Plowing releases huge amounts of carbon and nitrogen into the atmosphere that had been locked in the soil. Then the seeds are planted, the plants grow quickly (stripping minerals from the soil), harvested, and plowed under. The bare soil is then left exposed to the elements over winter, experiencing huge amounts of erosion. Even if you cover crop (the practice of sowing a winter annual like rye to hold the soil), you still have to plow the soil twice a year. Every time you plow, the glomalin network is destroyed, carbon and nitrogen are releases, and the soil becomes extra susceptible to erosion. As the soils are stripped of their minerals over and over, artificial and mined fertilizer is applied to the soil. There’s no way around this. Even leaving fields fallow, following a rotational planting schedule with nitrogen fixing legumes, and practicing no-till, you still have to add fertilizer. And in a vegan world, there are only bagged fertilizers to fulfill this need. Another common vegan argument is that too much total land space is taken up with agriculture and that more calories can be produced in a vegan world on less land. This is true, to a point. But humans, one, require more to survive than just calories. Humans require nutrients and a lot of them for optimum health. Rice, wheat, and corn (the most consumed foodstuffs) provide lots of calories, but not a lot of omega-3s (ESPECIALLY in comparison to the omega-6s), not much iron, not much choline, not much vitamin A or D or E, not adequate levels of B vitamins, etc. Soy too, though higher in protein, is not a nutrient dense food. Calorie dense, not nutrient dense. Additionally, crops like grains and broccoli and strawberries can only be grown in a few places. Places not too cold, not too hilly/mountainous, not too wet/dry, and not with soil that’s too rocky. That’s most of the world. You know what thrives on this marginal land? Animals. Cows, sheep, and goats are, between them, amazing adept at living off this marginal land and turning scrub plants into nutritious food and high quality clothing for people. A vegan lifestyle require artificial fibers, like polyester, or intensive cropping (like cotton) for clothing. But a sheep or a cow or a goat can produce 4 things over it’s life: clothing, meat, milk, and labor. That’s much more useful, not even including the nutrient cycling and marginal land maintenance! And synthetic fibers are accumulating in the bodies of fish. Synthetic fibers are not a neutral choice. So let’s talk about the negative environmental impacts of animals. Animals that are restricted to containment feeding operations are force fed huge amounts of corn and soybeans (as a sidenote - we only started feeding these to animals in large amounts once we had already overproduced huge amounts of grains, this is not what they should be eating and in fact it makes them sick and nutritionally less than they are naturally). These animals have their feces made into slurries that decomposed anaerobically or spread onto leech fields that cannot take the nutrient load so often (you can ‘burn’ a field of it’s microorganisms doing this) and so it becomes runoff. This is a shit system! No one is defending this! But take a cow off a feedlot and put it into a mob grazing/rotational grazing system (which mimics the natural evolutionary symbiotic relationship with grasses grazers have that created the huge topsoil deposit of the American prairie, for example) and the cows suddenly don’t have methane producing poop - birds (or chickens if you’re extra smart) come a couple days after the cows to eat the bug larva in the cow patties, spread it out, and add their nitrogen rich poop to the mix. Getting milk, beef, chicken, and eggs out of the same amount of land! All while storing carbon and building nutrient rich topsoil that grows nutrient rich grasses that become nutrient rich animal foods. Vitamins A and E and D are abundant. Choline is abundant. B vitamins are abundant. Iron is abundant. Vitamin K2 is abundant (not found in plant sources, vitamin K2 is what helps prevent your body from calcifying your arteries). DHA and EHA and omega-3s are abundant. Complete, easily digestible proteins are abundant. The ideal vegan world cannot compete with the ideal omnivorous world. It just can’t. It defies the laws of nature. A vegetarian diet is ‘better’ but is still largely a cop out. You want to eat eggs and drink milk, but in order to produce those foods, you have to continue to support animal populations so why not eat animals? Do we not eat them and instead let food go not towards sustaining human life and instead just be composted? This is how I view food: :
Tumblr media
We can feed more people well by being smart about what we grow where, setting up systems to make the most of the animal link in nutrient cycles, and using science to improve agriculture by studying more efficient ways to store carbon through rotational grazing, study the ways in which is prevent desertification through grazing (yes it can be done!), and how to make sure that humans everywhere have access to nutritious food. Sources: Defending Beef, Allan Savory and the Savory Institute, Righteous Porkchop, Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal, The Soil Will Save Us, Cows Save the Planet, The Third Plate, The Hungry World by Cullather, and The Land Institute.
