Bio Active Deer Velvet & Green Lipped Mussel best glucosamine sulphate for dogs
Firstly, it’s a natural component found in healthy cartilage, making it highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by your pet’s body. By supplementing your dog’s diet with glucosamine, you’re essentially replenishing their joint’s natural lubrication, reducing friction, and enhancing flexibility.

Most GP vets I know recommend glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplementation for dog at risk of osteoarthritis. They're both precursors to substances naturally found in cartilage, and the general claim is that supplementation reduces joint inflammation and protects cartilage from damage. Typically these are sold under the names Cosequin or Dasuquin. They're very popular with dog owners, and very commonly sold by both pet stores and vets.
I just went to a talk on osteoarthritis by an orthopedic specialist, and she claimed that these supplements were a waste of money, because they're not very bioavailable. The molecules are too large to make it through the GI system intact, and don't get to the joints where they'd be useful. So they're promising in vitro but aren't clinically useful.
So, rather than take her word for it, I looked it up. I found a 2017 literature review on the subject. Their conclusions are so frustrating that I want to quote directly from the article:
"Despite the trend towards more stringent criteria for veterinary nutraceutical products, the research community continues to conduct and publish novel, low-quality studies without consistent evaluation methods and varying products/doses...
These results are of questionable validity due to several trial shortcomings. First is the absence of therapeutic standardization. The sources of active ingredients, manufacturers of products, formulations, combinations of active ingredients, treatment doses, regimens, and durations of therapy differed significantly between trials. Second, multiple potential sources of bias were present in the trials, including the lack of a standardized follow-up timeframe, unexplained loss to follow-up, flawed study protocols, and incomplete data sets. Moreover, all of the clinical trials relied on subjective outcome measures to some extent, and the absence of standardized owner and veterinarian assessments increased the risk of bias in the reported results and diminished internal study validity.
The trials generally lacked peer review and were at risk of funding bias due to company sponsorship. Finally, there was an overall lack of generalizability of trial results. The trials were small in terms of the number of subjects used and subject baseline characteristics were not always disclosed...
Based on the available literature, the potential benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin use in osteoarthritic canines can neither be confirmed nor denied."
We are still so far behind human medicine in terms of evidence-based medicine...and human medicine is already worse than you'd hope. It's maddening. So in conclusion, I have no idea whether Cosequin/Dasuquin is helpful at all, and neither does anyone else.

Common Questions About Buying Dog Supplements Online
How do I know which supplement is best for my dog?
Understanding your dog's specific health needs is the first step. Supplements generally fall into categories like joint health, immune support, or skin health. If your dog shows signs of discomfort or has specific health concerns, a joint or immune-support supplement may be beneficial.
At Wild Earth, we categorize our supplements based on these health areas, making it easier for you to find products that target your dog's needs. Additionally, each product page provides a breakdown of the ingredients and their benefits. You can also consult with your veterinarian to determine which supplement aligns best with your dog’s requirements.

How often should I give my dog supplements?
The frequency of supplement usage can vary depending on the product and your dog's health needs. Each Wild Earth product comes with detailed dosage instructions, which are based on factors such as your dog’s weight and health condition. Generally, it’s recommended to give supplements daily to maximize their benefits, especially for long-term health improvement.
For instance, our joint support supplements may be given daily to help dogs with arthritis, while skin and coat supplements may be used periodically, depending on the season or the dog's coat condition. For precise recommendations, consult with your veterinarian, who can guide you on the ideal frequency based on your dog's health.

How Much Dog Food Should You Feed Your Dog?
Finding the right amount of food for your dog is crucial for their health and happiness. Feeding too much can lead to obesity, while too little can leave them undernourished. This article breaks down the factors to consider when deciding on the right amount of dog food, using specific examples for different types, sizes, and life stages of dogs.
Tumblr media
Factors That Affect How Much to Feed Your Dog
Several factors determine how much dog food your pet needs daily. Here’s what to consider:
Size and WeightLarger dogs, like Labradors or German Shepherds, naturally need more food than smaller breeds such as Chihuahuas or Pomeranians. You can refer to feeding guidelines on your dog food package as a general reference, but remember, these are just guidelines.
AgePuppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs have different nutritional needs. Puppy food is higher in calories to support growth, while adult dog food is designed for maintenance. Senior dogs might need fewer calories to avoid weight gain as their metabolism slows.
Activity LevelHighly active dogs, such as working breeds or those that participate in regular training, require more calories than less active dogs. A healthy dog food option with a higher protein content might benefit active dogs.
Type of Dog FoodDifferent types of dog food have varying calorie densities. For example:
Dry Dog Food (Kibble): Often more calorie-dense and filling.
Wet Food: Less calorie-dense due to higher moisture content, which means you might need to feed a bit more if it’s the primary diet.
Homemade or Fresh Food: Requires precise measurements and adjustments to meet nutritional needs.
How to Calculate Dog Food Portions
1. Check the Dog Food Label
Most dog food packages come with a feeding chart based on weight. For example, a recommended portion may look like this:
Dog Weight
Amount (Dry Food)
10 lbs
1/2 cup
20 lbs
1 to 1.5 cups
50 lbs
2 to 2.5 cups
100 lbs
4 to 5 cups
2. Adjust Based on Your Dog’s Activity Level
For a high-energy dog, consider adding around 10-20% more than the label suggests. For low-energy dogs, you can reduce portions slightly to avoid weight gain.
3. Monitor Weight and Body Condition
Keep an eye on your dog’s weight and adjust their portions as needed. If you notice they’re gaining weight, slightly reduce the amount. For dogs losing weight, gradually increase their food.
Feeding Guidelines for Different Life Stages
Puppies
Puppies require more frequent feedings—generally three to four times a day until they’re about six months old. Opt for best dog food formulas designed for puppies, which are nutrient-dense and high in protein.
Adult Dogs
Adult dogs typically need two meals per day. Choose healthy dog food that meets their nutritional needs without overfeeding. Monitor their weight regularly and adjust portions if they’re gaining or losing weight unexpectedly.
Senior Dogs
Senior dogs often have slower metabolisms, which means they may need fewer calories. Look for senior dog food options that cater to aging joints, often with added glucosamine. If your senior dog is more sedentary, you may need to reduce their portion size slightly.
Examples of Feeding Amounts Based on Dog Size
Dog Size
Daily Feeding Amount (Dry Food)
Suggested Type
Small (10 lbs)
1/2 to 1 cup
Wet or dry food with balanced nutrients
Medium (20-30 lbs)
1.5 to 2 cups
High-quality adult dog food
Large (50-70 lbs)
2.5 to 3 cups
Healthy dog food with joint support
Extra Large (100+ lbs)
4 to 5 cups
Senior dog food for older large breeds
Tips for Feeding Your Dog
Use a Measuring CupAccurately measure food to avoid overfeeding. Free-pouring can lead to unintentional weight gain.
Split MealsFeeding twice daily helps regulate digestion and maintains consistent energy levels. Some active dogs may benefit from smaller meals throughout the day.
Consider Wet and Dry Food CombinationMixing wet food with dry food can provide variety and increase moisture intake, especially helpful for dogs who don’t drink enough water.
Don’t Overdo TreatsTreats are great for training, but they can add unnecessary calories. Limit treats to 10% of daily caloric intake to keep their diet balanced.
Consult with a VetIf you’re unsure, ask your vet to help determine the right portion size based on your dog’s unique needs.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
Knowing how much to feed your dog can be complex, but by paying attention to their age, size, activity level, and the type of food, you can find the right balance. Remember, each dog is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. Regularly monitor their weight and consult your vet for any concerns. A proper diet keeps your dog healthy, happy, and energetic—so they can enjoy life by your side for years to come!
Choosing the best dog food and understanding portion control will help you provide the optimal care your dog deserves.

How to Care a Aging Pets
As pets age, their needs change, and so does the type of care they require to stay healthy and comfortable. Caring for an older pet involves adjustments to their diet, exercise routine, and overall lifestyle to accommodate their evolving health needs. With proper attention to these areas, you can ensure your aging pet continues to enjoy a happy, active life. Here are some practical ways to care for an older pet, including dietary choices, exercise, and health monitoring.
1. Adjust Their Diet for Optimal Health
As pets grow older, they often require specific nutritional support. Senior pets may need more protein, fewer calories, or specific nutrients to support joint health and digestion. Choosing dog foods formulated for aging pets can be a good place to start. These foods are usually crafted with lower calorie counts and added supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health.
Many aging pets benefit from multi-protein diets, which provide a range of essential amino acids for muscle maintenance. Multi protein bowls for pets can be a balanced option, as they offer various protein sources to support an older pet’s energy levels without overloading on calories. Additionally, keeping a watch on portion sizes and meal frequency can help prevent weight gain, which is common in older pets with reduced activity levels.
2. Maintain Regular Exercise and Mental Stimulation
Exercise is crucial for aging pets, even if they’re not as energetic as they once were. Regular, gentle exercise helps maintain joint mobility, prevents obesity, and keeps their mind sharp. Shorter, more frequent walks can be easier on aging dogs’ joints than long, strenuous outings. If your pet has joint pain, consider low-impact activities like swimming, which provides a good workout without straining their joints.
Mental stimulation is equally important as physical exercise. Toys that encourage problem-solving, scent-based games, or interactive puzzles can keep their minds active and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Regularly introducing new activities can also help prevent boredom and keep them mentally engaged.
3. Schedule Regular Veterinary Check-Ups
Routine check-ups become essential as pets age, as they are more susceptible to various health conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, and kidney disease. Regular vet visits allow early detection of these issues, making management easier. A yearly health screening is advisable, but as pets reach their senior years, twice-yearly check-ups might be more beneficial.
These check-ups often include blood tests, dental exams, and monitoring of organ functions to ensure they’re in good health. Don’t hesitate to bring up any changes in behavior or physical condition with the vet, as these can be early signs of underlying issues that need attention.
4. Support Their Mobility with Special Accommodations
As pets age, they may experience reduced mobility due to joint pain or muscle weakness. Making small adjustments around the home can significantly improve their comfort. For example, adding pet-friendly stairs or ramps allows easier access to couches or beds. Orthopedic pet beds also provide better joint support, making it easier for pets to get a good night’s rest without discomfort.
Keep an eye out for any signs of limping, reluctance to climb stairs, or hesitation to jump. These behaviors could indicate joint discomfort, and if they worsen, you may want to discuss additional support options, such as joint supplements or pain management strategies, with your vet.
5. Prioritize Dental Health
Dental care becomes increasingly important as pets age, as poor dental hygiene can lead to various health issues, including heart, liver, and kidney problems. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth and providing dental chews can reduce plaque build-up. If your pet is not used to brushing, start slowly and consider using a pet-friendly toothpaste for added ease.
Routine dental check-ups are also essential for identifying issues like gum disease or tooth decay, which may need professional treatment. Some older pets may also require a change in food texture, such as transitioning from hard kibble to softer foods, if they have difficulty chewing.
6. Keep a Close Eye on Weight
Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for aging pets, as obesity can put extra strain on their joints and organs. Adjusting their food portions and monitoring their calorie intake can make a big difference. For older pets, smaller, more frequent meals can aid digestion and prevent weight gain.
If your pet is struggling with weight issues, consult with your vet to create a tailored diet plan that meets their nutritional needs without adding unnecessary calories. Ensuring they have a balanced diet, with moderate portions of protein and limited treats, will help them maintain a healthy weight.
7. Provide a Comfortable, Safe Environment
As pets age, their senses can start to decline, impacting their sight, hearing, or smell. This makes it even more important to create a safe and comfortable environment for them. Ensure they have an easily accessible resting area, preferably one that’s quiet and free from drafts. Consider placing their bed in a familiar area of the home where they feel secure.
Making sure their food and water bowls are within reach and keeping their routine consistent can reduce anxiety for older pets. Additionally, avoid rearranging furniture frequently, as this can cause confusion or discomfort for pets with impaired vision.
8. Offer Supplements When Necessary
Some older pets may benefit from dietary supplements to support joint health, immune function, or digestion. Glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids are popular choices for joint support, while probiotics can aid in digestion. It’s essential to discuss any new supplements with your vet to ensure they’re appropriate for your pet’s individual health needs.
While supplements can offer added support, remember they’re not a replacement for a well-balanced diet. High-quality dog foods that meet your pet’s nutritional needs are the foundation for good health, with supplements playing a supportive role as needed.
Conclusion
Caring for an aging pet involves thoughtful adjustments to their diet, environment, and routine. By choosing the right dog foods and considering options like multi protein bowls for pets, you can support your pet’s health and wellbeing as they age. Regular vet check-ups, gentle exercise, and a safe environment further enhance their quality of life. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to ensure that your aging pet continues to live comfortably and happily.

Chicken Jerky for Dogs: Safe Treat or Risky Snack?
Tumblr media
As dog owners, we often want to spoil our furry friends with tasty treats, and chicken jerky for dogs has become a popular option. It’s chewy, flavorful, and high in protein, making it an appealing snack for canines. However, with the rise of safety concerns surrounding some chicken jerky products, many pet owners find themselves asking: Is chicken jerky a safe treat or a risky snack? In this article, we will explore the potential benefits and risks associated with chicken jerky for dogs, and why considering dog supplements may be a beneficial alternative.
The Appeal of Chicken Jerky
Nutritional Benefits
Chicken jerky is rich in protein, making it an excellent treat for active dogs. Protein is essential for muscle development, energy, and overall health. Many dogs love the taste, making it a great option for training or rewarding good behavior.
Easy to Digest
Most dogs find chicken jerky easy to digest, especially compared to some other meat-based treats. When made from high-quality ingredients, it can be a nutritious addition to your dog’s diet.
The Risks of Chicken Jerky
Contamination Concerns
One of the primary concerns with chicken jerky is the risk of contamination. Over the years, certain brands of chicken jerky, particularly those imported from specific countries, have been linked to salmonella and other bacterial infections. These contaminants can lead to severe gastrointestinal issues in dogs, including vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
Reports of Illness
The FDA has received numerous reports of dogs falling ill after consuming chicken jerky treats. While these cases may not involve all brands, it’s essential to stay informed and choose products wisely. Symptoms can range from mild digestive upset to more severe health issues, including kidney damage in some cases.
Quality of Ingredients
Not all chicken jerky is created equal. Some products may contain harmful additives, preservatives, or low-quality ingredients. It’s crucial to read labels and choose treats made from natural, high-quality chicken without fillers or artificial ingredients.
Making an Informed Choice
Research and Brand Selection
When selecting chicken jerky for your dog, research the brand and look for those with a history of quality and safety. Choose products made from chicken sourced in countries with strict food safety regulations. Opt for brands that are transparent about their manufacturing processes and ingredient sourcing.
Consult Your Veterinarian
Before introducing any new treats into your dog’s diet, including chicken jerky, it’s wise to consult your veterinarian. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your dog’s health, dietary needs, and any potential allergies.
Consider Dog Supplements
As an alternative to chicken jerky, consider incorporating dog supplements into your pet’s diet. Many supplements are formulated to support joint health, digestion, and overall wellness. They often contain high-quality, safe ingredients without the risks associated with some treats. Probiotics, omega fatty acids, and glucosamine are popular options that can benefit your dog’s health without the potential dangers of contaminated snacks.
Conclusion
While chicken jerky for dogs can be a delicious and nutritious treat, it’s crucial to be aware of the associated risks. By researching brands, reading labels, and consulting with your veterinarian, you can make informed decisions about your dog’s diet. Additionally, considering high-quality dog supplements may provide a safer and equally rewarding alternative to traditional treats. Prioritizing your dog’s health and safety ensures that your furry friend enjoys a happy and healthy life.

Dog Knee Braces: A Vital Aid for Canine Mobility and Recovery
Tumblr media
It all started with Rusty, an active Border Collie who lived for playing fetch. His owner, Sarah, noticed one day that Rusty wasn’t as eager to run as usual. He limped after the ball, clearly uncomfortable. A visit to the vet revealed the culprit: a torn cruciate ligament in Rusty’s knee. Faced with costly surgery and a long recovery time, Sarah began researching alternatives. That's when she discovered the world of dog knee braces, a solution that’s helping thousands of dogs regain their mobility without invasive procedures.
What Causes Knee Problems in Dogs?
Knee injuries, particularly cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears, are one of the most common orthopedic issues in dogs. Statistics show that up to 20% of dogs will experience a CCL tear during their lifetime, particularly in active or large breeds like Labrador Retrievers and Rottweilers . These tears make the knee unstable, causing pain and difficulty walking.
But there’s more to knee injuries than just CCL tears. Conditions like patellar luxation—where the kneecap slips out of place—or arthritis can also severely impact a dog’s mobility. Many of these issues are compounded by obesity, which is increasingly common in household pets. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 56% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, putting extra strain on their joints and increasing the likelihood of injury .
Dog Knee Braces: A Non-Surgical Solution
For many pet owners, surgery can be both expensive and risky. Depending on the type of surgery, costs can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per knee, and not all dogs are good candidates for surgical intervention due to age, health conditions, or owner preference . Fortunately, dog knee braces offer a less invasive and more affordable alternative to surgery.
A dog knee brace works by stabilizing the joint, reducing the strain on the knee ligaments and allowing the tissue to heal naturally. While it doesn’t "fix" a CCL tear or luxating patella, a brace can significantly reduce pain and help dogs regain a level of mobility they otherwise wouldn’t have. This is especially useful for dogs with partial ligament tears, where the injury may heal over time if properly supported.
How Effective Are Dog Knee Braces?
One lesser-discussed fact is that dog braces don’t just benefit dogs recovering from an injury. They can also be used preventatively, especially in high-risk breeds that are prone to CCL tears or arthritis. Studies show that braces can reduce the strain on an injured knee by up to 30%, helping dogs avoid further damage or delaying the need for surgery .
For older dogs suffering from arthritis, a knee brace for dogs provides stability and alleviates the bone-on-bone grinding that causes so much discomfort. In this way, a dog brace can significantly enhance a dog’s quality of life by restoring some of their lost mobility and giving them the confidence to move around without pain.
Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care
While a dog knee brace can be an important part of recovery, it should be paired with other supportive therapies to ensure the best outcome. Many websites overlook the importance of rehabilitation and ongoing care when discussing dog braces.
Physical therapy, including hydrotherapy (water-based exercise), can be extremely beneficial for dogs with knee issues. A consistent rehab routine helps strengthen the surrounding muscles, which reduces strain on the injured knee. Dogs that receive therapy in conjunction with wearing a brace are less likely to suffer re-injury or degeneration in other joints.
Additionally, managing a dog’s weight is crucial to long-term success. As mentioned earlier, excess weight increases stress on the joints, making it harder for an injured knee to heal and leading to further complications. Supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin can also support joint health and complement the use of a brace by slowing cartilage degeneration.
Choosing the Right Brace
Selecting the right knee brace for dogs depends on factors like the size of the dog, the severity of the injury, and whether the brace will be used for short-term healing or long-term management. Custom-made braces tend to offer the best fit and support, but off-the-shelf options are also effective, especially in cases of mild injuries or for preventative use.
Conclusion
For dog owners like Sarah, discovering a knee injury in their beloved pet can be overwhelming. But thanks to the development of dog knee braces, there are non-surgical options that can help dogs regain mobility and enjoy their lives again. Whether you’re dealing with an acute injury like Rusty’s or managing a chronic condition like arthritis, a dog brace could be the key to keeping your pup on the move.

When to Consider Adding Supplements
If your dog is healthy and thriving on their regular diet, supplements might not be necessary. It’s always a good idea to consult with your vet before introducing anything new into your dog’s diet, especially if they have specific medical conditions.
Conclusion
While most dogs get all they need from high-quality dog food, supplements can be a helpful addition to your pet’s diet if they have particular health needs. Natural options like goat milk are great for digestion and can provide extra nutrients. Always consult with your vet before starting supplements to ensure they’re right for your dog.
