Hello! May I ask if you have any headcanons about Enrique and Luisa Rivera?
I have a few for Enrique. I made a comic of one that you can read here:
And I've done some one-shot stories featuring Enrique. You can read them here:
I think those should about cover it for Enrique. Well, there is one more: Enrique had a favorite rooster on his paternal grandparents' farm, which he named Panchito, after the Disney character from the Three Caballeros. It disappeared one night, and Enrique's pretty sure coyotes got it. The rooster becomes his alebrije, and in that form, it has characteristics of a duck and a parrot as well.
As for Luisa, I have a few head canons for her. She's younger than Gloria, but closer to her in age than Enrique is to Berto. The girls' mother does not get along with Berto and Enrique's mother. At all. But their father is very popular around the hacienda and is good friends with Franco. According to a tie-in book, Luisa can't carry a tune in a bucket, and I've adopted that idea. But she still enjoys playing the maracas. While Gloria married into the Riveras in part for the shoes, Luisa fell in love with Enrique with no ulterior motives (and she 100% teases her sister about this). She really only met and started getting to know Enrique after Berto and Gloria became engaged. Giving up music was more of a sacrifice for her than it was for Gloria because Luisa associates music with her abuelo, with whom she was very close. Her abuelo was a music teacher (despite her best efforts, she was one of his worst students), and was always a kind and generous man who valued family above all other earthly things. What he never told her, however, was that his love for family was a conscious decision on his part to distinguish himself from his absent biological father, who always denied having offspring (and he had many). His father was Ernesto de la Cruz, and he kept the man's identity a secret for fear his descendants would want to emulate such a selfish, egotistical man who abused women and abandoned family at every opportunity. Miguel does later discover the connection, and Luisa fully understands his struggle with that revelation. She has to come to terms with the idea that her great-grandfather murdered her husband's great-grandfather.

Alexandrea's Diary
We held Héctor's funeral today as his body was finally sent back home. It took over a month but it was worth it for that closure so that we could properly grieve. We are fortunate enough that his body was recovered— many soldiers' families are not so fortunate as their loved ones are buried where they fell. I adorned his grave with a bouquet of sunflowers, which I felt fit my darling Héc's sunny personality.
Everyone who had known Héctor attested to his courage, his positivity, and his strength. Hardest of all was to see his parents, Consuelo and Andrés. Consuelo said that she could not help but be reminded of her sister, Héctor's mother, who had died shortly after giving birth to him, and how his short life mirrored hers. "Luisa named him Héctor— steadfast, the tragic Trojan king of the Greek legend. I could see my hermana's smile on his bright face."
It was so hard to try to explain the permanence of death to Gloria, who is but a mere three years old. Poor darling barely had the chance to get to know her father. After the ceremony, I was greeted by Dirk, who had been sent home on account of losing a leg, and learning to walk with a prosthesis and crutches. He told me that he had something he would give to me at a later time.
"Héctor wanted me to give you his journal," he said. "That day my leg had to be amputated... he saved my life. We were in Normandy and there were many casualties that day, not just Héc. My leg had been pierced by a shell. I could not walk, it hurt so much, and he carried me to safety until a medic could arrive. I never got to thank him. I would be dead if it weren't for Héctor."
"He really did love you, Alex. You were his world, the reason he fought so hard. You must know that." And I did.

Somehow, Carmen hadn't realized she was carrying twins until they were born. They'd been positioned so that one blocked the other from the sonogram; both were small, although not dangerously so; the birth of two babies surprised everyone. It explained her being so much more tired than during her previous pregnancies, though.
"Twins," Berto murmured, dazed. "Twins."
Carmen laughed, slightly hysterically. "The kids'll be thrilled, though."
Her sisters-in-law, Gloria childless, Luisa with a son of nearly ten, both stepped in to help; she was grateful for any and all assistance. Raising two rambunctious little boys simultaneously was quite a handful.

Teresa VS Rubi
I haven't watched a telenovela since like 2007. I feel like Rebelde was the last one I saw. However, I hold on to a couple of novelas that I thought were outstanding, such as Rubi. With the years, I've come across a lot of talk about 'Teresa' and I wondered why it had the same premise as Rubi. I was slightly intrigued. I learned that the story of Teresa came first back in the day, then Rubi. On social media such as tiktok and youtube, people are always comparing both. I kept saying that obviously Rubi was better because it was the one i watched. So in order to not be THAT biased, i decided to give Teresa a shot. So i just binged the entire novela in a couple of weeks. So here are my 2 cents.
Intro:
Song: La descarada- Reyli
youtube
Song: Esa hembra es mala- Gloria Trevi
youtube
With the songs alone, I will still have to give it to Rubi's intro song. I feel like it was more seductive and more true to what the novela was going to be about. On the other hand, Teresa's theme song felt like it would be more appropriate for Rubi. Because it was sang from the point of view of the 'betrayed friend'. Although you can argue that the betrayed friend was Luisa and that it would be from her point of view, but that only happened towards the very last episodes, so it wouldn't really make sense for it to summarize the entire novela as Reyli's song did.
Furthermore, I enjoy Rubi's intro more, especially the beginning were is says 'Una obra de ..." it makes it seem fancy and like I'm in for a special treat.
The actress
Barbara Mori vs Angelique Boyer
Tumblr media
I know I'm going to sound like a jerk by comparing their physical appearance, but I'm going to do it anyway.
Face
They are obviously both beautiful women, but in MY opinion, Barbara Mori's face is more seductive without even trying. She reminds me so much of Megan Fox. On the other hand, Angelique's face is so youthful that she has to work extra hard and make over the top gestures to act out the seductress role.
Body
Although they both have fantastic bodies, they are very different from each other. Once again, Barbara's body gives off a more sensual and natural look. Even the way she moves is a perfect embodiment of Rubi. Angelique once more has a more youthful small body, and the main thing that makes her 'hot' is her boobs, which look really fake and it doesn't play into the story since she's suppose to be poor. Rubi didn't have much of a chest, but she still managed to appear more naturally seductive. Teresa was just constantly exposing her chest to appear seductive.
Acting
Barbara Mori's acting was excellent. She made me feel like thats how she was in real life. Everything came natural to her. Angelique's acting was all over the place. She really had to OVERACT to put her point across. Everything about the novela in general was overacted actually. Angelique had to do over the top facial expressions to show when she was scheming, when she was talking down to people or when she was in love. She came out looking like a cartoon character as opposed to Barbara that made her character seem like a real person.
Story
I've already made this post way longer than i expected and there's so much more that I want to talk about out so I'm just gonna have to shoot out random points:
Evil
I feel like they were both equally evil. They both were horrible to their families, to the men they loved and to their friends. I can't really make my decision on who was worse. I will hand it to Teresa though that she worked and studied hard to have a degree and was an excellent lawyer. However, I've seen arguments that mention that she was smarter that Rubi and relied on her brains instead of her body to get ahead. But thats not true. Sure she had a degree but she didn't get far because of it at all. She did the EXACT same thing that Rubi did, got ahead with her body provoking a rich guy. Sure she played the long game but at then end she did the same thing, not just with Arturo but with Fernando as well. She seduced him, nothing to do with her brain.
Ending
Rubi's ending was EXCELLENT. It has stayed with me for a long time because we finally have a main character that didn't win at the end. She got what she deserved. She lost the man she loved, she lost all her money which is what she fought the most, she lost her beauty, and she lost her beautiful body. EVERYTHING, and it was just excellent.
Teresa's ending left me baffled. She ended up with the man she loved after everything that she did. People may argue that she changed and felt remorse for what she did, but come on. She didn't even suffer for that long. She only regretted things because she was caught and exposed, otherwise she would've never changed. Also the fact that Arturo came to her after what she did to his sister is disgusting. Sure forgive her for what she did to him, but to his innocent sister? Seriously??? I get it, that they wanted for them to have a happy ending since the actors were dating in real life, but that just makes bad story telling.
Plot
It kind of gave me the impression that Teresa was going to follow a similar plot to Rubi's in the sense that Teresa was going to stay in love with Mariano all the way til the end, and that at some point when Teresa was not going to have any more money, that Mariano would now be super rich and prestigious but would want nothing to do with her like in Rubi. Although that would've been a Rubi copy, it would've been a better route to take. Because then other elements seem pointless. Something that I do admire more from Teresa was the fact that Mariano fell in love with Aurora, because in Rubi, it felt like Alejandro, although he married Maribel, it never seemed like he truly loved her. It was more like he cared for her. So i was so ready for an awesome ending to where Teresa was trying to stop the wedding and be suffering because the love of her life no longer loves her. That would've been so satisfying to watch and Mariano's wedding would also be triumphant because he overcame his temptation....however, that didn't happen. Teresa didn't even care, so it makes the wedding kind of pointless to the story. It really felt like 3 quarters of the novela they were building it up that triumph moment, but instead it felt like they changed the direction of story to fit in the real romance between Angelique and Sebastian. To be honest, Arturo's ending should've been the same as his counterpart role in Rubi.
In Summary. I have a lot more bones to pick with Teresa, but the ones that come to mind, are probably mostly the acting, not just of Angelique but of the cast. I think many of them were new actors or something, but their acting was horrible. I can really tell who was new and who was a veteran. Having said all of this, I DID enjoy watching Teresa. I know it may seem like I'm just hating on it and like I didn't enjoy it, but I really did. The first few episodes were really boring but after a while it was hard for me to stop. In one day I would go through 10 episdoes.....bruh, those are like 10 hours a day dedicated to Teresa. It was intriguing and interesting, especially many of the elements that were different from Rubi, such as her becoming a lawyer and her ways that she helped unmask Ruben.
In conclusion though, I do see Rubi as superior. A superior actress, a superior story and superior ending. Maybe a bit is from nostalgia but I did give Teresa a fair chance. Although entertaining, it was not what I would consider a good novela.
Me das miedo Teresa.
Rubi, tan bella como malvada.

Jane the Virgin 3x03 Chapter Forty-Seven
Stray thoughts
1) I really hope this is not another bait...
Tumblr media
There’s so much buildup that I wonder if this is going to be disappointing. Or if it will even happen at all…
Tumblr media
Well, we’re back to where they got the go-ahead from the doctor, but...
2) People keep interrupting them, and I just wonder why Jane won’t just be open about it and tell her mom, dad, and grandma that they want some privacy to finally get laid!
3) “If you weren’t a singer, what would you be?”
Tumblr media
It’s an interesting question indeed, considering she’s not really a singer and she hasn’t done much with her life so far. It’s a weird question to be asking yourself when you’re pushing forty, right? But I guess Xiomara always followed her impulse and that’s how she led her life, there wasn’t really much time to think about what she wanted to do. I’m kind of curious to see where they go with this.
4) New character, I guess?
Tumblr media
So, this is Cecilia, Alba’s sister and the one responsible for telling everyone Alba wasn’t a virgin on her wedding day.
5) Oh, thank god!
Tumblr media
I found the whole “You and I finishing at the same time” comment… odd? And tbh, Jane doesn’t look very satisfied. But at least she got it over with! Of course, he fell asleep right after, and it doesn’t feel as magical as she’d expected, I guess. But I mean, why should it? Expectations about the first time having sex should be very low, but culturally women are raised to make this huge deal of their “first time” and “losing their virginity”, and it’s very difficult to shed those expectations, right?
6) OMG she’s sending a sex tape of her first time with her husband to her advisor!
But… the most important question is, is she going to watch that video? Will Michael and Jane watch it? Will they do a play-by-play analysis? Will he notice that she didn’t really come?
7) “It was actually my first time” “Oh, that explains things…”
Well, the advisor (I’m sorry, can’t remember her name!) made it out to look like she was talking about her writing – which she might well have been – and how it was lacking something. I think I’ve actually mentioned this before, but It’s kind of odd for Jane to be a romance writer and to be writing sex scenes without actually having experienced sex herself. The advisor makes a good point – romance without sex is just fantasy. And I’m not saying that you can’t have romance if you’re asexual. But that’s not the type of stories Jane is writing or the audience she’s writing for. Anyway, I think the advisor was actually talking about her performance in the tape and not her writing. Or maybe both.
8) I knew it.
Tumblr media
And of course, her friend tells her NOT TO TELL MICHAEL, and I’m like, huh? I just wish this would stop being a storyline? Both the faking and the not-talking to your partner about your feelings regarding the sexual experiences you share with them. Not having an orgasm is just part of the sexual experience and there’s nothing wrong with it, and sex can still be enjoyable even when you don’t have an orgasm. So let’s see where they take this storyline. I’m guessing Michael is going to be super supportive, and will try to make it up to her.
9) Why is this still a thing in this show? We get it, Luisa is a fucking moron, and she makes terrible decisions. I wish there was more to her character than that.
Tumblr media
10) And I know that we crave representation for LGBTQ+, but… Rose is a fucking psycho? And this is almost a textbook abusive relationship? She’s literally kidnapped Luisa, isolated her, and keeps telling her how she’s alone and Rose is the only one there for her. (and I’m not even touching on the whole murderer/drug lord thing because that’s just part of the zaniness of this show.)
11) Okay, Xiomara is considering moving on from singing, but move on to what?
12) I genuinely laughed at this.
Tumblr media
13) Okay, I liked this joke.
JANE: What’s the CW? Like a streaming thing? ROGELIO: No, no! It’s a huge network! Look it up! Amazing shows! Fabulous line-ups!
Anyway, Jane is very intent on manipulating her mom into finding her passion for singing again, and I don’t know how I feel about this. Yes, Xiomara loves singing, but what is wrong with giving up? She hasn’t really made it, and there are other things she might be passionate about that she hasn’t figured out yet because she’s been pursuing her “singing career.” I know Jane is trying to be supportive, but if she truly were, she would just try to help her mom to find what other avenues she can pursue instead of tormenting her with her unfulfilled dreams. It just feels like another thing Jane does because it’s what she wants rather than being selfless and thinking of others.
14) See? This is why you should be honest with your partner about your orgasms or lack thereof…
Tumblr media
At least it led to an honest conversation. Which led to this…
Tumblr media
15) I’m loving this Cecilia character. I kind of wish she was the leading lady, actually. She’s so fun, even if she’s a figment of Jane’s imagination!
16) Rogelio is selling his show to the CW, but Rob Lowe will be the leading man, not him. I see how this could easily lead to an existential crisis for Rogelio, but I have so much faith in him, he’ll probably take it in stride and turn into a bigshot Hollywood producer.
17) Hm. Day two and Jane is already trying to spice up their sex life? This doesn’t bode well. And Michael is telling her not to discuss their glitch with anyone to protect his fragile ego? Because he tells her she can say they had sex, but that she shouldn’t mention how it wasn’t good? Double hm. And now Jane is with Xiomara, someone who could actually help her get out of her head and understand what she’s going through, but she keeps her mouth shut because Michael’s ego is more important.
18) And then she finds this…
Tumblr media
I hope this sets her straight.
19) So… instead of getting on board with Xiomara wanting to move on after finding the list, Jane and Rogelio continue to plot to get her “back on track.” But why?
20) For a second, I thought Rafael had truly sent a caring, loving email to his sister, but it seems to be a ploy to get her to reply and reveal her location. Considering she’s a moron, she’ll probably fall for it, but it’s kind of sad? When she was reading the email, I was hoping it would be her wake-up call (if the fact that she literally jumped and gasped when Rose walked into her room wasn’t already a warning sign…) and that she would try and leave this toxic relationship. But if she’s being lured by false declarations of brotherly love… I don’t know, it feels wrong. Yes, she’s a fucking moron, but what makes her a moron is that she’s constantly looking for love and affection. That’s always her downfall.
21) Now, that is a cameo…
Tumblr media
Loved the fan bit!
22) So… Rogelio got freaking Gloria Estefan to help Xiomara, but it never occurred to him that it might have the opposite effect. Because Xiomara has seen Gloria and Emilio casually sitting there and watching her show and she’s freaking out.
Tumblr media
You bow to royalty.
23)  So… Lina Has just offered to help Michael and Jane and demanded a play by play, and Michael remembered the sex tape. He’s not going to show it to Lina, though, right? He’s just going to watch it and figure out what went wrong.
24) Oh, no she didn’t!
Tumblr media
Why is she so intent on convincing Xiomara to continue pursuing a career that hasn’t really worked out for her? She hasn’t made it, and it doesn’t look like she will anytime soon, and that’s OKAY! What’s wrong with wanting to try other things? What if she’s really talented at something else and she’s missing the opportunity to shine because she’s stubbornly fixated on being a singer? And why does it matter so much to Jane? Why does she need to control everything and everyone’s lives?
25) So… this whole obsession with Xiomara’s career is because… Jane gave up her virginity? Huh? That doesn’t make sense? How is Xiomara’s singing career a metaphor for Jane’s virginity? I’m just confused! The show is usually very good at pulling off this type of parallelism and metaphors, but this time it just didn’t work for me.
26) See? Xiomara had the right answer all along:
“With sex, it can take time to find your groove and figure out what you like, what you need. You’re just starting out. You’ll get there.”
27) So… they end up watching their own sex tape, and finally have satisfying intercourse, I guess. I kind of wish this storyline hadn’t been resolved in an episode, though, it doesn’t feel realistic.
28) So, that was the reason for the riff between Alba and her sister Cecilia…
Tumblr media
29) Why am I always so much more invested in Rogelio’s storylines?
Tumblr media
He apologized for the way he broke-up with her, and then they decided to embrace their artistic connection. And now he has six months to become famous in America so that he can be the lead of his own show in the CW hahaha! I feel this storyline will be lots of fun.
30) Look what the cat dragged in…
Tumblr media
…a moron thirsty for love.
31) So… I guess Rose lied about the whole “I’m not a criminal anymore” thing. Shocker.
Tumblr media
Rafael’s mom was on her kill list, before she even killed her. And Muter died holding a bible and clamoring for her son. I guess this will be Rafael’s storyline, then.
32) To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of this episode. Usually, the plot A and plot B are connected in a way that makes sense, and this week, it felt a bit far-fetched to have Jane obsess over Xiomara’s singing career because she had let go of her virginity. I don’t know, what are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments!
33)  Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!

Some fluff with potential for angst-- any headcanons on what Imelda is thinking the first time Hector gets to react to all of their non-Miguel-and-Coco descendants? Or Hector's reactions? I just want Hector to love all of his kids...
“Hector, if you don’t close your mouth your jaw’s going to fall off again.” Imelda said, pulling on Hector’s arm to try and shake him back to awareness.
“But, just, just, oh Imelda, they’re really all ours?” Hector said, not looking away as Rosa and Abel carried plates of food past them to the table set up in the family courtyard.
“You think I brought you to the wrong casa?” Imelda chided teasingly. The living Riveras were all laughing and bustling around the family compound, which was already aglow with Dia de los Muertos decorations and cheer.
“Oh! Oh! That’s Benny and Manny, right?” Hector excitedly pointed as the twins ran towards and then right though them, gleefully screeching and throwing handfuls of marigold petals at each other.
“Si,” Imelda said with a fond smile, sweeping her skirt out of the way out of habit as the little boys ran by. They’d both gotten so big in the last year and seeing them brought back warm memories of when Oscar and Felipe had been their age.
“And Berto, and Gloria, and that’s- Imelda, Enrique’s got my cheekbones! You didn’t tell me he had my face!” Hector was practically shaking and his smile seemed to be permanently fixed at maximum brightness, tempting Imelda to squint.
“None of our descendants have ever come close to your cheekbones mi amor.” She said, taking his hand and kissing him one one of said cheekbones. “But Enrique certainly does take after you.”
Imelda pulled him along to the kitchen, knowing they would find Elena there, fussing over the last of the meal preparations as always.
It had taken weeks for Hector to physically recover from his brush with the second death, and months after that for him to even begin to recover emotionally from being abandoned for nearly a century. Just last night she’d had to shake him awake from a dark nightmare of abandonment, returning the same favor he’d done her only the week before that.
It was going to take a lot of time to heal their wounds, but tonight at least it warmed her bones to see Hector glorying over every wonderful bit of his regained family.
Victoria was already leaning against the kitchen counter when they came in, a wry grin on her face as she watched her sister Elena give strict instructions to anyone who dared come near. Victoria waved at them before following Elena out of the kitchen through a side door, doubtlessly in pursuit of some helper that had run off.
“That must have been Elena, and that must be Carmen there at the stove then!” Hector said, pointing as they entered the kitchen.
“But where’s Luisa?” he said, looking around almost desperately, his fingers twitching in hers. “She's the only new one we haven't seen yet, oh! And little Socorro! Where are they?”
“Hector.” Imelda stood in front of him and took hold of his jacket’s lapels, making his frantic gaze focus on her instead. “We are going to be here all night, we’ll see everyone.”
Hector paused. He must have seen her unspoken request in her eyes, because he took a deep breath. He raised his bony hands to cover hers as he closed his eyes, taking a moment to gather himself.
“You’re home, mi corazon.” Imelda said quietly. She felt his hands tighten on hers. “And you’re never leaving again. You have all the time in the world.”
“Promise?” Hector asked quietly, eyes still closed as he tipped his forehead forward to touch hers.
“Promise.” Imelda said.
“I just, I feel like I’m going to wake up and I’ll be back in my old shanty again.” Hector confessed. His voice sounded like he was trying to make a joke, but it cracked in the middle of his sentance.
“Open your eyes.” Imelda said.
He obeyed, blinking when he saw she was still there.
“I love you, your family loves you, and you are home.” She said firmly, “No more of this nonsense, we are here to have a good time and celebrate. We’re going to go find where Miguel’s gotten to and we’re going to stuff ourselves on Pan de Muertos and we are going to sing and dance and enjoy ourselves. Is that clear?”
“Si, diosa.” Hector said, his smile returning as he lifted one of her hands and kissed her palm. “I have my orders.”
“Good.” Imelda said, stroking his hair. “Now, let’s go see where Miguel and his little sister are hiding themselves.“
“What kind of things are you left on the ofrenda?“ Hector asked, his inevitable excited energy coming back as she led him out of the kitchen. “I mean, I’ve never had offerings before.”
“Well, knowing Miguel we'll probably some unexpected surprises this year.” Imelda chuckled as they strode into the courtyard.
There was a strum of a guitar and they both looked over to see Miguel striding towards them, wearing a handsome maroon mariachi outfit and proudly carrying the old skull guitar.
“If you ask me, I think Miguel’s definitely the one that’s taken after you the most.” Imelda said, taking Hector’s arm.
“Well then, he’s going to be quite the ladies man isn’t he?” Hector said, looking at her with a grin.
Imelda just shook her head as they joined Coco and Julio and the rest of the family by the table, the air filling with laughter and joyful music from Miguel’s guitar.
It was going to take time for everyone’s wounds to truly heal, Imelda knew that. But as the music played, and her husband smiled, and laughed, and she held his hand, she knew from the warmth all around them that everything was going to be alright.
Because for the first time in generations, they were all home.

Note
☯️▼ for tia Gloria, tio Berto and Enrique
Sure thing, Nonny! I’m always up for the three Rivera siblings (*´∀`)
☯ Likes and dislikes
Berto: He likes to play with his children and nephew and niece, no matter what game they want to play. Abel and the twins want to play fútbol but Miguel is sick thus lacking one more person? Count Papá in! Rosa wants someone to help her finish a puzzle? It’s a bit hard if he’s the only one who helps his daughter but his beloved Carmen is there to help! Post-movie, he also comes to like folk music and dancing. He might not be very good at the latter but he still likes it! Also puns. Besides Héctor’s way of getting angry (or, rather, should Héctor be more strict), he inherited Héctor’s silliness−the latter being something that Abel also inherits. Miguel finds it endearing since he misses Héctor, but Carmen and Rosa can only heave a sigh.
Enrique: He likes a good cup of coffee in the morning while sitting in the veranda and listening to the only music allowed: the chirping of birds. He also really likes buying good-quality booze, can hold his alcohol really well and knows what’s good and what’s meh, once even giving Berto a severely judging look for getting a bottle of cheap whiskey. But what the family doesn’t realize until the music ban is lifted is that Enrique also really likes rock music. ‘70s and ‘80s rock in particular but he also finds Chingon’s rendition of “Malagueña Salerosa” to be really catchy. He is also fond of more traditional Mexican songs too, and to everyone’s surprise he later develops a love of singing which he proves to be really, really good at. He and Miguel even picked Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer” when the family decided to do karaoke for the first time and absolutely shredded it.
Gloria: Besides the seemingly never-ending gossiping in Santa Cecilia, she also likes to just chat about simpler things with her mamá, Mama Coco, and her sister-in-laws. She also likes watching telenovelas with them, particularly the latter. The most extroverted of the three siblings, she also likes to have small talk with the customers. And after the music ban is lifted, Carmen and Luisa also introduce Gloria to their favorite music. She especially loves tecano and salsa and knows almost all of Selena’s songs by heart.
▼ Childhood
Berto: He wasn’t bullied per se, but the other kids were wary of befriending him. He was quite big for his age, had a set of menacing scowl and glare. But he didn’t mind as he had more important things to do: teasing his baby siblings and learning to make shoes. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t have friends. After some kids decided to approach him, they realized that Berto Rivera was a rather cool kid and a good goalkeeper. Also, he and Carmen actually knew each other from kindergarten but Carmen’s family had to move to Monterrey when they were seven before returning nine years later. A few days before her family moved she kissed his cheek at school, asking him to wait for her. They both kinda forgot about that until Elena reminded the both of them after Carmen and her family returned, much to their embarrassment.
Enrique: He inherits Héctor’s tendency to become emotional and was what one will call a “crybaby” when he was still a boy. He was teased a lot due to it at school but Berto always had his back. But Enrique is a Rivera and a Rivera learns how to stand up to the naysayers and the bullies. So he did. But thanks to his sympathetic personality, he has friends from childhood that to this day are still tight with him. He did get exposed to a song when he was twelve and found that he quite liked it (it was “Love Is A Song” from “Bambi”, he later learned from Miguel). He kept it a secret from his family, of course, and never spoke of it again well until the fated Dia de Muertos.
Gloria: She liked playing house, like a typical little girl. But because of having two brothers, she also liked to play rough sometimes, often joining them for a game of fútbol with the Ramirez boys. She even got involved in a few fights when she was nine. But as time went on she began to mellow a bit. When she turned thirteen, she started to like makeup and began to pay more attention to her appearance. And for quite a long while, she also longed to be a dancer after catching a glimpse of a group of folk dancers from her room but due to the music ban she buried that dream of hers deep down.

For all those who were curious (and equally confused because they didn’t read any of the novelization), I made a Rivera family tree.
This is the entire known Rivera clan. Lemme break it down a bit, though, 'cuz there are a lot of names on here. I'll spare the obvious ones like Imelda, Héctor, Coco, and Miguel.
The spirits that Miguel meets in the land of the dead are as follows:
Felipe and Óscar, twin brothers to Imelda
Papá Julio, the small one with the gray mustache and his sister, Tía Rosita (the cheerful one in the pink dress)
Victoria, Abuelita Elena's late sister
And of course, Imelda and Héctor.
Miguel’s Living Family:
Franco, Abuelita Elena's husband
Enrique (Miguel's dad), Gloria, and Berto (Enrique's siblings, Miguel's aunt and uncle)
Carmen (Berto's wife), and Manny, Benny, Abel, and Rosa (their children, Miguel's cousins)
Luisa (Miguel's mom) and Socorro (Miguel's little sister)

Late last night we gathered all of the new books that we carry that contain lists of
radical/difficult/legendary/badass/bold/brave/bad
girls/women/ladies/leaders/rebels/princesses/goddesses/feminists/heroines
and created a word cloud of all the names that occur in these books. Here it is in long form:

Coco fan art.
My interpretation of Gloria and Luisa's bio family. I've named their parents Heraclio and Inés. Gloria is about 15 here, and Luisa is around 9. I'd like to take this moment to remind everyone that Gloria and Luisa are canonically sisters, and the family tree in the novelization has a typo on it.
Heraclio gets along famously with the Riveras, and he and Franco have loud conversations filled with laughing. I haven't decided what he does for a living yet. Gloria and Luisa are very close to him, and he always did his best to spoil them while they were growing up. He let Gloria's relationship with Berto develop naturally, occasionally teasing her about whether she was actually after him for the shoes (her greatest material love). When Gloria and Berto got engaged, it led to Luisa meeting Enrique. Heraclio immediately liked Enrique and kept encouraging Luisa to get to know him. He was their first shipper. He visits the zapatería frequently and loves being an abuelo.
Inés is a very different story. She does not like Elena at all, and resents the fact that the Riveras claimed both her daughters. She competes with Elena for the grandkids' affections, and has had her best success with Miguel. She's the one who introduced Miguel to Ernesto de la Cruz. She had a specific reason for doing this. Her father, Marco, is one of de la Cruz's many illegitimate offspring. He hid that part of his family tree from his children for a long time. But Inés found out. She had always been obsessed with the idea of fame, and wanted to move to Hollywood to be an actress. But she was always passed over in school for major roles in plays, and eventually gave up on her acting dream. When she learned that her grandfather was the famous Ernesto de la Cruz, she was furious with her father for not telling her. She blamed him for her shortcomings as an actress, claiming that if she had known, she could've used that inspiration (and possible leverage) to land the roles she wanted. She could've become as famous as her abuelo. Basically, she completely justified Marco's reasons for concealing his family line. But their relationship was damaged from that point on. Inés never cut her father off, and he was much beloved by his grandchildren (especially Luisa). But things remained prickly between them until Marco's death. Inés' link to de la Cruz is the main reason she disapproved of her daughters marrying into the music-hating Rivera family.
Inés saw a lot of de la Cruz in Miguel from the time he was young. He resented the music ban early, often humming little tunes he heard in the plaza. Inés thought that perhaps she could live vicariously through Miguel, if he pursued musical fame. So she introduced him to de la Cruz's music and movies. It was fun for Miguel at first, having a secret he shared with one abuela that he had to keep from the other. Inés began to see some wisdom in concealing de la Cruz's connection from Miguel for the time being, deciding that there would be a right moment to reveal the truth to him. But before she could, Miguel turned on de la Cruz very suddenly and very, very vehemently. Inés was nothing short of gob-smacked as Miguel systematically dismantled de la Cruz's reputation in favor of the musician who had been the reason for the Rivera music ban in the first place. She blamed Elena, of course.
Eventually Inés will let Miguel know that Ernesto de la Cruz is his great-great-grandfather. How will Miguel react when he learns that he is, in fact, related to a murderer?

In Memory of Consuelo Eva Huntington Morales
Consuelo passed away in 1948, months after the death of her twin brother, Oscar Jameson Huntington Cortes. She was followed in death by her longtime close friend and partner, Helen Eudora Coates. Consuelo was the second child of Olga Cortes Huntington and J Huntington III and raised in comfortable wealth. She married Andrés Rodolfo Morales in 1931, in a platonic marriage, to placate Andrés' family. After the death of her older sister Luisa, Consuelo took in Luisa's son Héctor. Through Andrés' life, Consuelo remained his close friend and confidante, while resuming her long-term romantic relationship with Helen. Andrés' criminal career afforded some comfort to Consuelo and her family. Consuelo was heartbroken by the death of her adopted son, Héctor, in World War II, in 1944. She stayed in Oasis Springs in the cabin that had been in her family for generations, and her partner Helen moved in with her after the death of her husband, Andrés, in 1945. In her final years, Consuelo focused on her relationship with her grandchildren and continuing to tend to the earth. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Alexandrea Cole Morales, her younger brother, Ramon Huntington, and her grandchildren, Salvador and Gloria Morales.

I had to look this up and the definition seems to be sexual in nature and can only be applied to dudes, so as an aroace woman, no, I’m not a “simp” for anything.
“Do you remember anyone in Miguel’s family other than the grandmas”
…Yeah? All of them??? Let’s see if I can do this off the top of my head, all of the Riveras and their relation to Miguel:
Héctor & Imelda (great great grandparents), Óscar & Felipe (great-great uncles (Imelda’s brothers)), Coco + Julio (great grandparents), Rosita (great aunt? (Julio’s sister)), Elena & Franco (grandparents), Victoria (grand-aunt (Elena’s sister)), Berto & Carmen (aunt & uncle), Abel & Rosa & Manny & Benny (cousins), [blanking on aunt’s name], Enrique & Luisa (parents), and Socorro (little sister).
*THUD*
I’M SORRY I FORGOT THE AUNT’S NAME (had to check—it was Gloria) I ONLY WROTE HER LIKE TWICE.
Anyway!
I haven’t seen Encanto yet but am planning to. Meanwhile, I’ve written extensively about abuse in Coco, and here’s one of my posts about it: https://babycharmander.tumblr.com/post/168740201995/okay-im-gonna-rant-for-a-minute-about-something
Hopefully Tumblr lets this reply show up…
Regardless, yeah, Elena did some awful things, but the movie never portrays them in good light and in fact speaks against any abusive behavior by making Miguel RIGHT, so I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here? Let’s not pit random movies against each other for dumb reasons.
The family in coco is more abusive than the one in encanto, you're all just pixar simps

Okay, allow ME to clear things up from the perspective of an artist. The woman on top is Tia Carmen, Berto's wife, and stated BY THE CREATORS to be Luisa's sister (she looks as much like Luisa as Berto looks like Enrique, but the resemblance is still there, if you squint). She looks ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like Berto, Enrique, Elena or Franco.
The woman on the bottom is Tia Gloria, who clearly has the same face as Elena and Berto, and the same nose and eyes as Franco and Enrique. She's a perfect blend of Elena and Franco, and looks very much like she is related by blood to Berto and Enrique. This is not mere opinion; anyone who knows thing one about character design would tell you that woman is Elena's daughter.
As for the Unkrich tweet, "full figured" tends to refer to the breasts and hips, not the belly. If a woman doesn't have breasts that make bra companies rub their evil hands together in delicious anticipation of lots of money for ugly undergarments, she is not full figured. And the woman in the bottom picture does not fit that profile. The woman on top does. And it's also possible Unkrich, who is NOT one of the character designers, accidentally confused their names. I very, very seriously doubt he would claim that a woman who clearly looks like Elena is not related to her by blood, while a woman who looks nothing like Elena IS related to her by blood. Especially when the latter woman was already stated to be a blood relative of Luisa.
Also consider the promotional material. Whenever the family is depicted together, miss Hartman hips is consistently placed next to Berto and the twins. While the sweet-faced one is always near Elena. Clearly they are meant to be Carmen and Gloria respectively.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the woman in the top picture is, in fact, Tia Carmen, Berto's wife, while the woman in the bottom picture is Tia Gloria, Berto's sister.
Just thought I'd clear that up.
I’m been seeing people in the Coco fandom mix up Miguel’s living tías constantly, so I thought I’d make a post to clear it up with visual aid.
Tumblr media
This is Miguel’s Tía Gloria! She is a Rivera by blood, Elena and Franco’s only daughter, and Enrique and Berto’s sister. As of the events of Coco, she has no spouse or children. She has one line in the movie, when Miguel argues with his living family before Elena breaks his guitar.
Tumblr media
This is Miguel’s Tía Carmen! She is Tío Berto’s wife, and the mother of Abel, Rosa, Manny and Benny. She’s the only living Rivera to have no lines in the movie aside from the toddler twins, and she isn’t seen at the workshop. She does give Pepita some well-deserved chin scritches.
Hope this helps!
