The greatest rock & roll is the voice of change, and Rage Against the Machine shook the foundations of the status quo – lyrically, sonically, and philosophically. The band mixed hip-hop, punk, metal, funk, and rock in an entirely new way. They took aim at oppressive systems of power – cultural, political, and economic – and set a new standard for how to ignite a revolution through the power of music.
Formed in 1991, the Los Angeles quartet’s self-titled 1992 debut and 1996’s Evil Empire ushered rap-rock into the mainstream and established Rage Against the Machine as a powerful force that harnessed strength from defying sonic boundaries. Zack de la Rocha’s stinging, hip-hop-inspired vocals drew on his days fronting a hardcore band. The rhythm section of bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk heightened the urgency of de la Rocha’s delivery with deep, heavy grooves grounded by a pummeling backbeat – no rhythm section could maximize volume while staying in the pocket more skillfully. Guitarist Tom Morello took the rap-rock hybridization further than contemporary groups. He used pedals, toggle switches, and alternative tunings to incorporate effects normally created by hip-hop turntables, samplers, and synthesizers into the language of heavy metal through Rage’s driving riffs and iconic solos.
Rage Against the Machine were part of a musical tradition indebted to the MC5, the Clash, and Public Enemy. While plenty of 1990s rock bands supported social justice issues, Rage Against the Machine’s rebellious politics stood head and shoulders above. Onstage and off, the band members gave a voice to the powerless, calling out local and global inequalities and railing against censorship, corporate cronyism, and government overreach. Their lyrics were smart and pointed; “Freedom” highlighted the plight of Leonard Peltier, an imprisoned Native American leader, while “People of the Sun” showed solidarity with tyrannized Mexican citizens. Even today, their lyrics remain relevant. “Killing in the Name,” a stark indictment of racism and police brutality, still resonates deeply in cities across America. Rage Against the Machine forged brazen protest music for the modern world.

Water also destroys computers, and anything that runs off electricity, so the odds that this cooling process involves dumping the water straight up directly onto the machines seems really, really unlikely. I would assume that water heat sinks involve pumping cold water through pipes in the machines, not literally dumping water on computers.
The ocean is very, very, very, very big. Also rising. If you consumed as much ocean water as there is drinkable water on the planet, you'd see an effect, sure, but you could literally remove billions of gallons of water from the ocean and have it be a proverbial "drop in the bucket". Since the tides are constantly sloshing the water in the ocean around, there will be no local "we drained a lot of water in this one coastal region so now the water is low there" effects; drain water in one region and the tide will fill it back in more or less instantly. It's the ocean, not a lake.
What you'd have to be careful about is the impact on fish and other sea life so they don't get sucked into the pipeline. Fine grates, maybe pumping in pulses so if a fish gets sucked against the grate the suction will be gone in a second so they can get out of there... maybe there are sounds or colors that could be employed underwater that would drive most sea life away. Don't put the entrance to the pipeline on the beach or directly on the sea bed; it should probably sit inside the water at a reasonably deep coastal level but with plenty of clearance, so as to not suck in sessile creatures who live on the bottom.
The pipeline itself would consume electricity -- the ocean's at the bottom of the gravity well of the planet's surface, you can't use gravity to passively pull the water back out. But by employing wave turbines, you can recapture a lot of the energy you put into pumping back out as power you can reuse. No such thing as a perpetual motion machine, but if by using seawater to fuel solar steam plants in places like deserts you can make back more energy than you had before, you've got a net positive outcome in terms of energy.
Issues to consider:
A salt water pipe breaking would be almost as toxic as an oil pipe breaking. And salt's corrosive to metal. You'd have to be careful what you made it out of, be constantly checking, and have baffles that will drop the moment there's a loss of local water pressure anywhere in the pipe, and a means of instantly and automatically stopping the pump if that happens. And protection of the pipeline to stop bad actors from deliberate sabotage.
Solar power plants can have an impact on the local environment if they block sun that plants and animals need. On the other hand, global warming suggests that what plants and animals need right now is a lot less sun overall, so creating areas of shade in places that don't have them might actually be good for the life in those places.
The whole system requires a lot of industries to cooperate. If solar steam plants or data centers dump their salt in giant piles in the desert rather than letting spice companies sell it as sea salt, this could be very bad for the environment. If rich people are allowed to fill their swimming pools with it, this has enormous political benefits for the pipeline because as soon as the rich feel entitled to it, they will make sure it stays working and stable, but then what happens if the data centers need more and more?
I don't pretend to have all the answers but I don't think any of the difficulties are insurmountable. Humans are using very, very little of the resource of ocean water, on a planetary basis... a resource we're getting more and more of as the seas rise, and as the heat dries up freshwater sources on land, we're going to need desalinization on a massive scale. Integrate that desalinization with industries that need to use water but it doesn't have to be fresh water, especially industries that could turn moving water or heated water into power in a way that's clean, and we could build a system that helps to solve multiple problems at once.
(BTW, this is not an issue of AI. This is an issue of data centers. The whole goddamn internet is to blame, not just AI, and even if AI collapsed and burned tomorrow we would still need to do something about cooling our data centers without using up drinkable water.)

I'm not going to argue with a bird enthusiast about their compassion for birds. I believe them. I am grateful they exist. What I will argue against is these massive energy construction projects. Just like the craze for building hydroelectric dams, this newest iteration has proven to be the same story as that was. Dams have proven to be harmful to the water table, the river ecologies, local communities, floodplains, and even geology in terms of seismic effects and deformation of bedrock. They've nearly all built up silt to the point of costing more than they are worth without reasonable down-time to clean out planned because they demand being brought back online to the powergrid so quickly. And that silt builds up quickly! Massive construction projects tend to displace responsibility, abdicate it. They don't make people aware of the reality of modern infrastructure or the dynamics of their lifestyle in the role of culture. It brushes the problems under the rug, out of sight, out of mind, no personal changes or accountability needed. "There's an app for that!" mentality. Below are some points that basically make themselves. Just like the deluded mass-industry mentality behind the logistics of massive lithium-ion powerbanks for houses, or for cars, or for the electrical grid itself-- the use of iron for these wind turbines and mass energy projects is distorted and wasteful-- unsustainable. The amount of lithium used for an EV car battery could equal hundreds of electronic devices such as medical or even mere personal use devices like cellphones and laptops. Instead, the model of planned/engineered obsolescence that is perpetuated by capitalist consumerism not only makes those electronics wasteful in design, but also in resource logistics-- so nobody would ever even see how they deserve to be the way that the lithium is allocated to begin with instead. With the amount of iron and fossil fuels expended in constructing these wind turbines, a whole global system of nickel-iron (ferro-nickel) batteries could be built that would last hundreds of years. People have no cognitive intuition to what these metals and energy can do in the forms they can take. Instead? ...
The paragraph from the book in full reads: “The concept of net energy must also be applied to renewable sources of energy, such as windmills and photovoltaics. A two-megawatt windmill contains 260 tonnes of steel requiring 170 tonnes of coking coal and 300 tonnes of iron ore, all mined, transported and produced by hydrocarbons. The question is: how long must a windmill generate energy before it creates more energy than it took to build it? At a good wind site, the energy payback day could be in three years or less; in a poor location, energy payback may be never. That is, a windmill could spin until it falls apart and never generate as much energy as was invested in building it.” Hughes told Reuters that his comments had been taken out of context and that the passage relates to capacity factory, which is the “amount of electricity a wind mill actually generates compared to the amount it would generate if it was running at 100% of its rated Generating Capacity”.
Where are ideal locations for energy to be harvested with these massive projects and how are they built? Are they always the most patient in doing things ethically, or do you think they seek a bottom-line of money?

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds

The Board of Directors at INX International Ink Co. have approved the promotions of three key executive managers to vice president positions. Anthony De Francesco, Alex Folloso, and Kim Hill have a combined 50-plus years of experience, and have led their teams to new levels of innovation, productivity, and industry excellence.
A logistics professional with over 10 years of experience, De Francesco has achieved many supply chain challenges since joining INX two years ago. Prior to being promoted to Vice President of Integrated Supply Chain, he reshaped key pillars including logistic operations, procurement, and supply planning. He also rightsized inventory without impacting service, and was instrumental in reshaping the company’s transportation footprint while reducing costs.

A recognized industry expert, he often attends events and frequently speaks on topics related to sustainability and food safety.

How Eternal Blue launched Spiritbox into a “surreal simulation” of heavy metal stardom
It’s been a year since Spiritbox released their genre-defining debut album, Eternal Blue, and vocalist Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer have barely been able to process every milestone that they’ve reached in just 12 months. Who could blame them?
Spiritbox are visibly exhausted — sighing, barely able to keep their eyes open after a year that’s felt like a blur. When the band are faced with endless days of rehearsal, performing and human engagement, they have no choice but to approach everything with a tunnel vision-like focus to accomplish every enormous task that comes their way. At the moment, Spiritbox are backstage at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center arena supporting heavy-metal mainstays Ghost and Mastodon — playing to some of the largest crowds they’ve ever seen in their career on yet another high-profile tour. LaPlante has barely finished her first coffee of the day, knowing all too well that she has a gigantic day ahead of her, and immediately apologizes if she’s a little more “unenthusiastic than usual.” Currently, she’s on semi-vocal rest to conserve her voice for what is sure to be a high-intensity set, and not to mention she’ll be pulling double duty supplying her signature angelic vocals coupled with earth-shattering screams. “Usually you can’t get me to shut up, so Mike might talk a little more than me today,” LaPlante jokes over Zoom from a green room in Providence, Rhode Island. It’s not often that a group that solely existed on the internet is now tasked with putting on full-scale production shows to thousands of fans, especially on a first album cycle. While they are eternally grateful for these massive opportunities, Spiritbox can’t help but feel as if they’re immersed in a “surreal simulation.”
Because they are indeed just beginning their career, the rapid rise of Spiritbox has found LaPlante and Stringer, who are both married, at a crossroads. The last 12 months since the release of Eternal Blue have left the couple to ponder the question of dropping everything back home in their relatively isolated region of Canada and making the move to the U.S. to have some form of proper functionality in what they can only describe as a “logistical nightmare.” “Do we want to keep spending all of our money on Airbnbs and hotels to be in Los Angeles, or do we just move down here? We barely see our own home and are pretty much down in LA because that’s where most of where everything we enjoy resides now,” LaPlante candidly admits.
Since their inception in 2017, the Canadian metal outfit found near-instant online fame by breathing fresh air into heavy music with two successful EPs and a plethora of singles. By 2020, they were primed to hit the tour circuit, eventually enlisting their now-current drummer Zev Rosenberg to round out the lineup just days before hitting the road (with bassist Josh Gilbert joining later in 2022). But plans, of course, changed due to the pandemic. Spiritbox were not only forced to cancel their tour dates, with just two weeks of shows under their belt at the time — they also faced a series of setbacks when it came to getting studio time to work on what would become their debut album, Eternal Blue.
Remarkably, the sheer intensity of a global health crisis didn’t slow any momentum that the band were building at the time. In fact, it bred even more hype and anticipation for the band’s return to the stage and the next collection of songs. In July 2020, Spiritbox released their breakout single “Holy Roller,” which cemented the relatively online-based group into the category of chart-topping radio metal act and eventually secured them a No. 1 spot on Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal radio station. When it came time to hunker down and create Eternal Blue, expectations couldn’t be higher within the music industry, their fanbase and even internally. “First of all, it was too much hype. There were really big shoes to fill, which were our own shoes,” LaPlante declares. In short, it was very fulfilling and also very stressful.
Following the release of the album in September 2021, Spiritbox played just about every major rock festival in North America, sharing the stage with everyone from nü-metal royalty Limp Bizkit and Bring Me The Horizon to acclaimed post-hardcore innovators Underoath, gaining immeasurable wisdom along the way from their musical peers and even their early influences. They “were sponges,” Stringer says proudly.
“As opening band people, we all know what is so annoying about younger opening bands and the pet peeves. We are super self-aware of not disturbing anyone and not speaking unless spoken to,” LaPlante laughs. “As the headlining band, you have to be able to gently bully your opening bands to become better bands, and those guys definitely gave us tons of advice.” Underoath, she says, were the most approachable, though.
In the busy year that has passed since the release of Eternal Blue, the album has already been lauded as a classic among a wide range of musical communities, and anytime the band play a live show, it already feels like they’re playing a set of “greatest hits.” This is impressive and remarkably rare for a band with just one-full length under their belt, but not surprising due to the fact that the album was created meticulously to ensure cohesion and avoid filler that can plague larger bodies of work. Ultimately, Spiritbox wrote a timeless record that embodies the best aspects of modern technical metal while diving deep into areas of raw emotional depth that tackles subjects ranging from losing loved ones (“Constance”) to religious extremism (“Holy Roller”), juxtaposed with LaPlante’s impassioned vocals. Even the most outspoken metal gatekeepers can’t deny the allure of all that and their infectious hooks.
“It’s always been a goal for the band that people can use as a gateway into this genre,” Stringer says proudly, reflecting on the band’s accessibility. LaPlante, with perfect comedic timing, adds, “We will be your college girlfriend that teaches you how to iron your clothes and takes you from being a baby to an adult. Then you break her heart and leave her for the girl at your new job, and that’s OK, but she helped you iron your shirts — that’s who I’ll be.”
Eternal Blue doesn’t sound like a product of the era it came out in, and it wouldn’t be wrong to assume that this record will continue to be revered for decades to come due to its groundbreaking nature. On Eternal Blue, Spiritbox expertly pair everything from downtuned guitars that reflect the sonic palettes of djent and extreme metal while diving into atmospheric territory that harks back to classic Deftones — plus dystopian synth textures that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Nine Inch Nails or Bring Me The Horizon record. Much like Bring Me The Horizon, who the band describe as “fearless,” Spiritbox will likely be under a microscope going forward to see how they’ll shape and inform the next generation of metal artists. Stringer is quick to point out that “a lot of the album was written out of frustration and uncertainty.” “On one hand, it was devastating to keep delaying everything, but it also allowed us to have more of an honest perspective of what we were bringing to the table with the sequencing of the record, the feel and how it would look,” he explains.
While Eternal Blue is loaded with intensity and heaviness, there’s still a palpable, uplifting element to the music thanks to the inclusion of anthemic choruses on nearly every track. But Stringer’s interpretation of it is quite different: To him, it’s a “sad record.” While sonically the record transcends the time of its release, Stringer wonders: Will it always be dubbed as “a pandemic record”?
Despite that lingering question, one thing is for certain: They did exactly what they wanted to with the album, and it’s paid off. While the band couldn’t avoid the impending hype and anticipation, LaPlante humbly admits that they were not at all prepared for how in demand the record would be. “That’s the craziest thing about this band — it was all just a guessing game and projections,” Stringer says. “There’s no real way of knowing when everything is shut down and you can’t play shows.”
Almost an hour into our chat with the band, it’s clear that LaPlante and Stringer are beginning to make sense of their whirlwind year a little more and are able to reflect on the growth opportunities they’ve experienced not only musically but personally. For LaPlante and Stringer, their marriage is a driving force behind Spiritbox, with Stringer saying,” I feel like Courtney and I’s relationship is like hitting the lottery. This is what we have been working toward for so long. A lot of guys or women in bands have to leave their significant other, and it’s difficult.” LaPlante nods in agreement while Stringer elaborates: “We’ve been playing music together for longer than a decade at this point, and the fact that we can [still] do this together is incredible and is the best of everything. I couldn’t imagine doing it without her.”
While LaPlante and Stringer’s relationship couldn’t be stronger, the inner-band dynamic has also grown, with an increasing sense of camaraderie felt between the other members as a whole. “We are able to be a band and be in each other’s presence for more than a week now. We would really only see each other for a couple of days here and there every month or two to do fly-in dates, rehearse or do festivals. With [bassist] Josh [Gilbert] coming into the band, too, it’s starting to feel like we are a band who knows each other and understands everyone’s day to day and boundaries,” Stringer reports excitedly. This past May, the band’s original bassist Bill Crook departed the band amicably, which led them to enlist Gilbert. It’s a position that seems to be the perfect fit due to his longstanding history and experience touring the world in previous musical projects. LaPlante agrees: “He’s not only such an incredible musician, but we really appreciate the wisdom of someone who has done this for so long. He knows what he’s doing, and it’s nice having someone around who can reassure you that you are making those benchmarks and not crazy for wanting everything to be perfect.”
Perfectionism, after all, is a central theme for Spiritbox — something they not only wrestle with in how they manage and operate their band but also within the music that they write. “We’re pretty hard on ourselves,” LaPlante admits. “We’re all in different stages of how to deal with perfectionism in a healthy way. Zev is only 21, and he has a long musician journey of seeking that perfectionism that we have all been on a little longer, but it’s all syncing up very nicely.”
Because Spiritbox have always led with authenticity and honesty since the beginning, they only have one job: to be exactly themselves and, in turn, the world will follow them no matter what. They’ve thrived on being an open book, navigating the balancing act of crafting heavy songs and cinematic ballads alike, as long as they represent Spiritbox. The challenge, however, has been having people watch them figure out their identity while they’re discovering it themselves. “The challenge is training your audience, which is hard to do if you didn’t already set out to do that. The people that like our band don’t quite know who we are yet. We’re still figuring it out, but I’m also happy to not ever figure out what genre we are,” LaPlante declares.
Beyond genre, it is the lyrical depth that has allowed Spiritbox to capture so many different audiences and, in turn, transform the lives of their listeners. Fans can’t help but gravitate toward Spiritbox, who fearlessly speak their truth and pursue their dreams no matter the obstacles or detractors. Interestingly enough, LaPlante and Stringer are both in their early 30s, and while the music industry has always tried to dictate a narrative of youth, Spiritbox are living proof that timing and patience are everything. The group are also a direct rejection of the hypermasculine, and often misogynistic, history associated with heavy metal — choosing instead to highlight the beauty of femininity and amplify underrepresented voices. This has led LaPlante to be looked at as a hero in the genre, or even simply “one of the good ones.”
Like their success, becoming role models is something the band are both grateful for and “overwhelmed” by. When the subject is first brought up, LaPlante takes a moment to reflect on her influence in a genre that has historically and tragically been associated with toxic power imbalances. “It gives me great respect for being in this position, and it makes me more and more upset that other people who have been given this gift of having this wonderful connection with their fans abuse it or take advantage of their fans; I don’t want to squander it,” she reflects. “I feel like so many fans have had a bad relationship with people to whom they were so vulnerable. I want to be a band that everyone feels safe to open up and be themselves at our shows.”
For Stringer, meeting fans at a headlining show last August at the House of Blues in Anaheim stood out to him. “There were a couple of moments where people opened up to us about ‘Constance’ or a particular song that helped them, and they would start to cry,” he recalls. “After you make the music, do the work and get ready to tour, it doesn’t matter if there are thousands of people in the room. Being able to speak to those people and have them share that with you is a pretty incredible moment.” After years of engaging with fans online, the band are still getting used to having intimate moments with fans in a physical space. “This whole thing is so weird,” Stringer adds. “Coming out of a pandemic and having your career on the internet to then doing it for real — it seems not real.”
That performance was memorable for Spiritbox for other reasons. It was notably only the second time in the band’s career that they headlined a show, and it sold out almost instantaneously, proving not only that Spiritbox have no issue taking on a 2,000-person venue, but have probably been ready to do so since the release of Eternal Blue. Again, they were in disbelief. “We had played [House of Blues] on the Underoath tour, and we always thought the venue was incredible. To then announce the [headlining] show and have it sell out, it felt like another simulation-breaking moment, and it felt like a celebration,” Stringer says with joyful disbelief. The success of that night is part of what’s helping the band enter their next chapter. “It gave us the confidence to envision doing a tour like this, the confidence to make some really big decisions with what we’re going to do next,” LaPlante says with cautious optimism.
With those decisions, LaPlante is seriously considering how she can make an impact in a traditionally male-dominated scene. She wants to ensure metal becomes a more inclusive space where all voices, not just white, cis male ones, are represented. “I really want to do anything I can to make this genre more diverse, stronger and better,” she says. “It’s not just about my personal benefit. There’s so much potential in our community to treat women better, and if there are more of us in the community, it will be easier for others to make their own art within it.” While LaPlante admits that she appreciates the simple joys of applause and kind words for her music, she wants Spiritbox’s impact to go deeper. “Seeing younger girls take a stab at this kind of music is real change to me, and something that was foreign to me as a child,” she explains.
Right now, LaPlante is captivated by a certain 10-year-old singer from the U.K. named Harper who won the internet over with her now-famous audition for America’s Got Talent — a rendition of Spiritbox’s single “Holy Roller.” LaPlante flashes a wide grin at the first mention of the young singer’s name and declares, “A couple of years older, I was that [same] kid. However, I lacked the confidence that these kids [and Harper] have. They actually feel like they belong. There are also many years of psychological warfare they don’t have to focus on. Now, they can just focus on being a part of the community.”
While Spiritbox are versed in exceptional musicianship, releasing Eternal Blue just as they were beginning to hit the road was integral in their continued growth as performers and granted them the opportunity to road-test the new material — gaining new insights that they can use in the future. “We’re getting older and figuring out what we enjoy playing live, and maybe some parts don’t need to be as complex or some parts need to be pushed further,” LaPlante explains. “We like to challenge ourselves, we really do, but also it doesn’t matter how hard I work. I’ll never be like the singer of Meshuggah. Maybe I won’t be as technically proficient as these kinds of people with crazy patterns, but I just want to do my best.”
If the last year since the release of Eternal Blue has proven one thing, it’s that Spiritbox have earned an immense amount of freedom and control over their destiny. While it’s too soon to discuss concrete details of when their next album will arrive, it’s clear that in a world where music is consumed at a rapid rate, their fans are eager to see what the next step will be. Though it hasn’t been too long since they were satiated with new music — Spiritbox released their last EP, Rotoscope, in June, a three-song collection that let them toy with their sound.
It’s a nice cliffhanger for the band who are still determining their next move. “I think we’re just going to continue on the path of being upfront and honest with what we create. We’re going to get a little more extreme with certain aspects of it, whether it’s the visuals or music. Whatever we do moving forward, we are going to evolve,” Stringer says. While that remains relatively nebulous, he adds that the music will be “grander in all aspects, and a more honest version of Eternal Blue.” LaPlante isn’t so sure. “For me personally, I can’t take any more honesty than that record,” she laughs. “It took a lot out of me.” What they can agree on is that they want to be thoughtful about whatever they do next — and they’re just getting started.

How I Letterboxd #10: Chad Hartigan.
Filmmaker Chad Hartigan talks to Jack Moulton about his prescient new sci-fi romance, Little Fish, why radio silence is worse than a bad review, and his secret system of Letterboxd lists.
Chad Hartigan has won prizes at the Sundance Film Festival and the Film Independent Spirit Awards for his acclaimed films This is Martin Donner and Morris From America. He’s also been a Letterboxd member since way back, joining what he proclaims as “my favorite website” in 2013. Hartigan has always been an obsessive logger: he has transcribed all of his viewing data since 1998 and continues to work on filling in the gaps in his downtime.
Like many ardent Letterboxd members, Hartigan is a diligent list-maker, keeping tabs on his best first viewings of each year and assembling an all-time top 1,000 films over the summer (with an accompanying 26-minute supercut). Perhaps unusually for a member of the film industry on Letterboxd, he’s unafraid to hold back his opinions and regularly voices his critiques on even the most acclaimed films.
Hartigan’s newest film, Little Fish, is a sci-fi love story starring Olivia Cooke (Sound of Metal) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken). Written by Mattson Tomlin, it’s set during an imagined pandemic—shot long before our own actual pandemic—wherein a disease causes people to lose their memories. It was set to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, and then postponed due to Covid-19. It’s now out in limited theaters and on demand, and we were delighted with the excuse to put Hartigan in the How I Letterboxd spotlight.

You made a pandemic movie before the pandemic. How do you feel about accidentally hitting that unfortunate zeitgeist and now consequently being asked questions like this one? Yeah, strange. The questions are fine. If it wasn’t this one, it would be another that you would have to answer over and over again. One of the things that drew me to the project was that it felt like a fantasy that wasn’t necessarily rooted in reality in a way that my other [films] were. I liked that it’s old-fashioned in its attempts to purely take you somewhere and wasn’t intended to hold up a mirror to our times—but then in the end that’s exactly what it’s doing. I’m curious myself, and I’m checking Letterboxd to see the reactions from people because I really couldn’t guess what it would have been like [now].
Are there any prescient details you’re proud of getting right? I’m so grateful and happy that Jack [O’Connell] is wearing his mask correctly. That’s the number one thing that I’m glad we got right. I think it was very smart of Mattson to focus the movie on [the relationship] rather than the details of this global pandemic. I feel the reason it’s not in bad taste is because it dealt with those things as a backdrop and instead focused on people just trying to remember what’s important and clinging onto those that they love.
Onto our own favorite memory aid, Letterboxd. How did you discover us and how did you manage without us? I’ve been on since 2013, so I’m probably one of the earliest people to jump on it. I love the interface and the diary, just aesthetically it was really fun. I’ve been keeping track of what I see with analog [methods] for as long as I can remember. I have diaries and planners so I logged all that old information. If I was running for president, my platform would be that everybody is required to use Letterboxd comprehensively, because I just love to know what everybody is watching all the time.
Do you talk about Letterboxd in the real world with the other filmmaking people? Yes, and I’m often trying to convince them to join. Other filmmakers are more concerned about having their opinions on peers be public knowledge than I am, I guess. I’ve made four films now and each one’s been bigger and more widely seen than the last. The very first one was a total no-budget affair that couldn’t get into any festivals and I was very excited when I finally got it into the Hamptons Film Festival. It was about half-full and one or two people came up to me afterwards and said they liked it. This was pre-Twitter so I spent the whole next day Googling to see if anybody had written anything. I was so curious to see what people thought and there was nothing—not a review, not a blog—just total emptiness.
When the next film got into Sundance, there were people tweeting their reactions and actual reviews and I read everything. People were asking if the bad reviews hurt me. Absolutely not—nothing can be worse than the radio silence of nobody caring about the first film. The fact that people care enough to sit and write about this movie—good or bad—is a win, and I’ve carried that onward. I like to see what people think, it can be helpful in how you view the film as a success or failure. You learn and move on.

Some filmmakers have told us they’re kinder to films after making their own, but you’re not shy at all about being critical. How did making your own films change your perspective as a critic? I don’t consider myself a critic so that’s why I’d be less concerned with someone reading what I thought. Why should they put any stock into what I think? If they get hung up on it then that’s their own stuff because I’m not a critic. Like everyone else on Letterboxd, I just love watching movies. Obviously I can appreciate and understand some of the technical aspects maybe moreso than people who don’t make films, but at the end of the day, rarely that’s the thing that makes you love a movie or not. There’s a great bit in Francis Ford Coppola’s commentary track for Finian’s Rainbow where Fred Astaire’s doing a dance number and [Coppola admits] he totally messed it up because Astaire’s feet aren’t fully in frame. He’s very honest about his mistakes because it’s one of his earliest movies. Then he goes on to say that he thinks there’s the same number of mistakes in Finian’s Rainbow as there are in The Godfather, it’s just that he made mistakes on the things that don’t matter for The Godfather. No film is perfect, but if it can latch onto this one magical aspect that connects you to it, that’s what makes you love it or not.
You had a project where you chart the best films made by directors at certain ages as you reached that age. Tell us more about it. That was a great project. I got the idea when I was 26. This was back when I had a Netflix DVD subscription and it was just hard for me to randomly choose DVDs to throw in the queue. I needed a system. I decided to watch movies from directors when they were my age and see if there’s some common denominator, something I can learn. At that point, there weren’t many, there were films like Boogie Nights and Fassbinder films. Not many people had made stuff when they were 26 or 27, so it was very feasible. Every year there were more movies and more directors to add to the list and it became time-consuming. I did it all the way up until I was 34 and the reason I stopped was because I had a son and there was no way I could continue this level of viewing output.
My favorite part of your account is the fact that you log every viewing of your own films. You know for a fact that you’ve watched Morris From America 26 times and Little Fish fifteen times. Why do you log them? What counts as a viewing? I’ve clearly watched those movies many more times in little chunks but I’ll only log it if we’re sitting down and watching it from beginning to end. I have a ticket to see Little Fish in the drive-in on Saturday, so it’s going to be logged again. Why do I do it? Like I said, I wish everyone was required to use Letterboxd comprehensively. That’s what it’s there for for me, an accurate log of what I watch. This is psychotic behavior but I’m tempted to have a Letterboxd account for my son. I’ll do his views for him once he starts watching movies until he’s old enough to take over. It’ll just be, like, Frozen a thousand times but he’s not old enough to watch anything yet, so we’ll see.
Have you discovered any films thanks to Letterboxd discourse that influenced your approach to filmmaking? For sure, I can’t maybe say specifically, but once I dropped the directors my own age system I didn’t replace it with nothing. I’m a Virgo and I have a little bit of OCD, so I have to have some system. I’ve replaced it with a new complicated system where I pull from different lists and that’s now my main source of how I choose a movie to watch. I have like ten or twelve different lists, each about a thousand movies with a lot of overlap. One of them is my own list of every movie I’ve seen in a theater and I’ll go and look through that and if it’s something I want to revisit. Recently I rewatched Twister, which I hadn’t seen in a long time and is an old favorite from when I was in high school.
I have a bunch of private lists I cycle through; every movie nominated for a Spirit Award, every movie that’s won an Oscar, every movie that’s played in competition at Cannes, the top 1,000 films at the box office. There’s another great website that I use as a biblical resource which is They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? and their lists of acclaimed films for all-time and the 21st century. I hit those up often. Something that I watched purely because of the very high Letterboxd rating and really loved is Funeral Parade of Roses. I try to see as many movies as I can that have a 4.0 rating or higher.
You respect the Letterboxd consensus. I do, but I don’t always agree with it.

Which is your most underrated or overlooked movie according to Letterboxd? I can say I was the very first person to log a movie called Witness in the City, which is an Italian noir movie I watched when I was doing my ‘directors my own age’ series. Literally nobody had logged it, so my review was like “whoa, I can’t believe I’m the first person to log this!”. It was very exciting for me because it’s great, but I’m the OG logger of that movie.
From your list of every film you’ve seen in a theater since you were twelve, which was your most memorable experience? The cheap answer is that it’s hard to top my own movies. The Sundance premiere of Morris From America at the Eccles Theater is maybe the best, but if I’m disqualifying my own films, seeing Scream 3 in a very packed theater in Virginia Beach was really fun, really rowdy. There was a trailer for a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie and I remember the climax was Van Damme going “you lied to me!!!” and everyone laughed. Someone did a George Costanza move later during Scream 3 and yelled out “you lied to me!!!” and everybody laughed again—so that’s a high. That’s the thing I miss the most about movie theaters, and the worry I have if theaters go away, is that so much of how we feel about a movie can be tied to the experience; who we saw it with, what we did before or after, what the crowd was like, or if anything strange happened. There are a lot of movies I have strong memories and affection for because of the experience of seeing them and I probably wouldn’t feel the same way about if I just watched it at home on my laptop.
I typically like to cap interviews off with what filmmakers thought was the best film of the past year, but we have your data to hand. For you, it’s Garrett Bradley’s documentary Time. Can you talk a bit about what makes the film stand out for you? One thing I learned about myself from the pandemic is that the motivation and desire to see new things is very closely tied to the theater-going experience for me. Once that was taken away and you could watch a new movie at home, it joins the pile of all the other movies. The fact that it’s new doesn’t really do anything for me. Why would I press play on Da 5 Bloods when I still haven’t seen Malcolm X? I gotta see Malcolm X! There wasn’t an urgency, so I saw far fewer films than in an ordinary year. But Time I found incredibly moving and important. Similar to what I liked about the Little Fish script, it’s so hyper-focused on one relationship and within that one story it has so much to say about larger issues and the world at large. It was an emotional and rich viewing experience.

Lithuania at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics
Having been the first Soviet nation to gain independence from the USSR in 1990, Lithuania represented themselves as a sovereign state for the first time in 64 years at the 1992 Barcelona #Olympics. However, in addition to the battle for medals, there was another competition brewing between two prominent Japanese designers. #HanaeMori was enlisted to design Japan’s ceremonial kits, the elegant businesslike suits inspired by Japan’s Hinomaru represented the country’s devotion to tradition, consistency and advancement. #IsseyMiyake however, was contacted spontaneously by Dr. Edward Domanskis - a California plastic surgeon turned Lithuania team physician in a bid to be their teams designer. Miyake said that he wouldn’t be expecting an invite from his home nation due to the conservatism of their sports establishment but his progressive, neo-futurism aesthetic resonated with newly-liberated Lithuania. “They put their collars a little differently from what I thought, but they're not models, they're human beings. They're enjoying themselves so much" The collection consisted of a split-hood pleated jacket, t-shirt, sneakers, metallic bottoms and matching cap illustrating an assertiveness on the global stage. He initially didn’t like the idea of incorporating a flag into his designs due to a distrust in nationalism but saw Lithuania as an exception. Constructed using lightweight polyester provided by Toray Industries, the garments were cut using a new hot metal method reflecting his approach of utilising innovative textile-engineering. Having experimented with pleats since 1988, this was the first time Miyake put this aesthetic to the public before releasing his Pleats Please line in 1993. Dubbed ‘The Other Dream Team’ for their imminent threat to the legendary ’92 Team USA. The small Baltic state didn’t get gold but restored their dignity when defeating their former overseers, Russia in the battle for bronze. Sympathising with their struggle, talent and significance in competing, The Grateful Dead band sent the team signature tie-dyed t-shirts in their nation's colours - worn during the medal ceremony.
