The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter 17)
Summary: Mrs. Hudson is treating her tenants to an American dish, and lectures them about a special Constitution Day celebration.
Seventeen Years Old
Nana’s American pancakes were legendary. She’d learned to make them while she lived overseas, and whenever there was a special occasion, she served them. Unlike most countries, the UK doesn’t have a Constitution Day or National Day, but several days are celebrated. It varied from year to year, which of those Nana chose to honour. Our birthdays were never neglected like St. Patrick’s Day, or Wilberforce Day might be. Never knowing when we were graced with the sinful treat, made the surprise even sweeter.
***
“Rosie, dear. Give me a hand, will you,” Nana called from downstairs one Saturday afternoon in the middle of May.
Dad and Papa were reading in their chairs, but not for long.
“Pancakes,” Papa whispered when the sweet and familiar scent crept up from downstairs.
I hurried to assure Nana that I’d be right down to help her carry up the tray with pancakes, maple syrup, and fresh berries.
***
“So, what’s the occasion, Mrs. H,” Dad asked after his second pancake.
The moaning and praise of Nana’s skills had been the only thing breaking the silence so far, but now that the first hunger had been stilled, the time for revelation had come. To my knowledge, we’d never had pancakes on this date before.
“We’re celebrating Norway today,” Nana stated.
“Elaborate.” “Please,” Papa added when Dad sent him a disapproving look for being so terse.
“Well,” Nana said, and sat back in her chair, which meant we were in for a lecture.
Papa rolled his eyes, but he chuckled along with Dad and me, picked up a strawberry and dipped it in syrup before he slipped it into his mouth. Nana cleared her throat and continued.
“Last weekend, I watched the Eurovision Song Contest, and didn’t that turn out to be more chaotic than normal… Anyway, I was enthralled by the Norwegian performance. Quite powerful. I had heard an interview with the band earlier when they spoke of their Constitution Day, and it was most intriguing.”
She took a sip of coffee and looked at us to see if everyone was paying attention to her presentation of this Scandinavian saga.
“They have parades all over the country, but not military parades. Far from it in fact. Children are walking the streets of the cities and the roads in the more rural places, while brass bands play the national anthem and other songs and marches. Everyone is dressed in their best clothes. Their national costumes are really something else. I looked them up on the internet. There are about 450 different kinds! Can you believe it?”
Nana was getting really warmed up now, and there was no way of stopping her. Not that either of us wanted to. Knowledge like this was fun and interesting.
“So, it’s mostly about the children and eating hot dogs and as much ice cream as possible. They obviously cheer and sing, while waving their flags, and in the capital, the royal family greet the children from the balcony. It was mentioned that from an outsider’s point of view, it may look quite civil, but the band could tell the listeners that when the children are to be picked up by their parents when the parade is over, there’s chaos beyond belief. Crossing the streets are almost impossible.”
I thought she had finished and cleared my throat to ask her about the song contest, but a stern look, made me shut my mouth and sit back in my chair.
“There’s also some obscure tradition with graduated students of a certain age, eighteen or nineteen, I think, but I didn’t pay that much mind. What I could gather from it was that it had mostly to do with too much alcohol and dressing up in red, blue or black coveralls with all sorts of patches on them,” Nana concluded.
“Thanks for the history lesson, Mrs. Hudson,” Dad said. “It’s quite refreshing to know that not all parades need to contain soldiers and weapons.”
We all agreed to this, but the question was now burning on my tongue.
“Nana? I thought you were boycotting the Eurovision this year.”
“Stated in a moment of passion, dear. I admit I’m a weak woman,” she said with nonchalance.
This retort resulted in a snort from Papa, and spilled coffee on the front of Dad’s shirt due to him choking on the brew.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert part 2
Colbert: Welcome back. Now to explain why Madonna is not the last name on Phillip's sick list: Phillip and Cole's Variety Team.
PBC: Madonna is not the last person on Phillip's sick list. Each of us do have some criticism of the beloved and prolific entertainer. First of all, Phillip is too sick to leave home these days, but he did say the following:
Phillip: The most objectionable thing about Miss Ciccone was her first choice of a husband, a man who continues to show himself a poor representative of mankind.
PBC: Rupert, you're next.
Rupert: (On a projection screen) Cheerio, this is Phillip's cousin Rupert in England. I had no problem at all with Madonna. After all, compared to some of the singers in the UK she held herself in an almost respectable way. Then she married a British subject as her second husband and moved here. That put her into the same septic tank so many of our own singer bred in and she began to smell like them. Not only that, but she eventually divorced her British husband and didn't even move away! Folks, especially women all over the globe, if you marry an Englishman stay with him for life or move away!
Ford: Thank you Rupert. I'm Ford, a former judge in Tennessee and, as a judge in Tennessee I have no jurisdiction, nor do I have authority over persons accused of crimes in other jurisdictions. However without exception I can not watch any crime related movies without passing sentence according to the laws of Tennessee. On at least 2 occasions I have watched movies in which Madonna played characters who confessed to crimes. For those I have no choice but to sentence her in absentia to a period of not less than 3 years in prison in any Tennessee jurisdiction and I certainly do not approve of that.
Cole: (On the projection screen) I'm Cole from Tennessee, a cousin of Ford. I don't care much about crimes or who she marries. I figger I never had a chance. What bothers me about Madonna is her name. Hell, she ain't never been no parygon of virtue, and I don't know why the Catholics changed the name of the virgin Mary to Madonna. I ain't Catholic, so I figger that's their business. Still, a young slutty woman who goes into singin' can call herself anythin' she wants. Why mess up people by takin' a name that about half the world thinks is sumfin holy. If I go to see a concert with someone named Madonna I expect hymns and arias, not erotic gyratin'. So for about 30 years I was mad about that. Then I found out Madonna is the name her parents gave her! Now I'm even madder. Y'all's supposed to keep the name yer parents give yer, no matter how much yer hate it.
PBC: Thank you Cole. It's my turn now. My biggest objection to Madonna was the way she dressed, notably those ugly lopsided outfits in that first movie she did. I was a young man when she became famous and couldn't look at the screen because the clothes were such a turnoff, the complete opposite of the reason I wanted to see it in the first place. You're next, Brad.
Brad: (On the projection screen) I'm Brad, Cole's cousin and Ford's younger brother. I'm with ya Phil about the clothes, especially showin' off her bras all the time. She became famous just about the time gals in Tennessee started learnin' to go braless and boy did that send ever'thin in the wrong direction. Anyway my biggest problem with Madonna is her songs. We like ballads down here in the south, and even if she figgered she had to sing kinda fast on accounta the songs weren't any good she coulda found a way to make 'em into a little story. Did that feller open his heart? Who was that girl? Did she keep the baby? Come on, gal, tell us. It only takes one line!
Norbert: I guess I'm l-l-l-ast heh heh heh heh heh again heh heh. m-m-m-my-my-my-my p-p-p-pr-problem with Madonna, es-es-es-especially. wh-wh-wh-wh-when I was young heh heh heh heh heh heh is is-is-is that I have...as...as-asthma heh heh heh heh heh heh heh and -and-and wh-wh-when I s-saw her first vi-vi-videos I-I-I c-c-c-...heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
(Norbert falls down. Curtain closes.)
Colbert: we'll be right back.

London office worker became royalty after marrying Middle Eastern king
Antoinette Avril Gardiner, known as “Toni”, was born in 1941 in the village of Chelmondiston in Suffolk, before coming an unlikely - and mostly unknown - royal princess
By Kate Buck, News Reporter, Ertan Karpazli, 16:05, 15 Sep 2021
Britain has a widely unknown royal princess - a London office worker who wooed the King of Jordan.
Antoinette Avril Gardiner, known as “Toni”, was born in 1941 in the village of Chelmondiston in Suffolk, to Lieutenant Colonel Walter Gardiner, who was in the British Army and based abroad in Malaysia.
She attended Bourne School in Kuala Lumpur, where it is said she excelled at field hockey, but her school was shut down when Britain decided to close down its offices in the country, and her family were sent back to the UK.
Aged 19, she accompanied her father to his new station in Jordan where she quickly landed herself a job at Jordan Radio before taking on a secretarial role at a film production company called Horizon.
The Horizon team were in Jordan to shoot what would later become a Hollywood all-time classic, Lawrence of Arabia.
As part of the movie, Jordan’s King Hussein gave permission for some Jordanian servicemen to take up roles as extras.
He would regularly attend the set to check up on how his soldiers were doing.
On one occasion, the film crew threw a fancy-dress party, which the king attended dressed as a pirate.
It was there that Toni saw him and said the words that won his heart. “It makes you look rather scruffy, Your Majesty,” she said with a cheeky smile.
The king had actually just come out of a divorce from his ex-wife, Queen Dina, and was said to be feeling terribly lonely and was looking for love.
King Hussein was also a keen Anglophile, so he naturally fell in love with Toni as soon as he laid eyes on her.
Regarding his first meeting with his wife-to-be, the king later wrote: “For the first time in my life, here was a girl who took an interest in me as a human being and not as a King.”
The couple were soon wed, and Toni changed her name to Princess Muna al-Hussein.
Many speculate that the name change came as part of her conversion to Islam.
After all, it was unconstitutional at the time for the king of Jordan to marry a non-Muslim woman. Others, however, believe that she didn’t change her religion, hence the reason for her only taking the title of Princess rather than Queen.
To this day, her religious affiliation is somewhat ambiguous.
The young English bride bore four children for the king, the first being Abdullah in 1962, then Faisal in 1963, and finally she gave birth to twins Aisha and Zein.
As the eldest of King Hussein’s sons, Abdullah was granted the title of Crown Prince and eventually became the new king of Jordan upon his father’s passing.
King Abdullah II, being half English and having received his education in Sandhurst, always struggled with Arabic and spoke English as his first language. He is therefore often referred to today as the “English king from the desert”.
But things weren’t always so easy for Toni a.k.a. Muna.
Her son Abdullah was briefly stripped of his Crown Prince title due to instability in the country.
According to the Jordanian constitution, the country’s ruling monarch must be born to Muslim parents.
With doubts about his mother’s conversion still lingering, King Faisal tweaked the constitution in order to allow him to name his younger brother Hassan as his heir. This decision was later changed again to allow Abdullah to reclaim his title.
Princess Muna (Toni) also had to endure a bitter divorce from her husband of 10 years in 1971 after he decided to marry again while still being wed to her.
However, King Hussein amicably allowed her to keep her royal title while relieving her from many of the responsibilities associated with it.
At that point, she had the choice of returning to the UK, but she chose to stay in Jordan and be close to her children.
In later years, she had to heed off an attempt by another wife of the king, American-born Lisa Halaby, who pressed King Hussein to name her son Hamzah as Crown Prince.
Unlike Abdullah’s mother, Hamzah’s mother’s conversion to Islam is not in doubt, and she goes by the name Queen Noor. But eventually, it was Abdullah who was crowned king, and by the time of his wedding to Queen Rania in 1993, Muna and Noor had apparently resolved their differences.
Nowadays, even at the age of 80, Princess Muna can be found pursuing her passion of nursing in the Middle East.
She founded the Princess Muna College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions and the Princess Muna Scholarship Fund for Nursing.
She has also been the President of the Jordanian Nursing Council and the Vice-President of the Royal College of Nursing. (Source: The Mirror UK)

We hear it from women of every age, size and body type: Sometimes, finding the right bras for your life can be hard. Our mission at Bare Necessities is to help you get it right and make it easy. This week, we’ve brought together the 7 essential categories, as well as our picks for the best plus-size bras, that meet your every wardrobe need, dress you for any occasion and support your curves–all at the same time. 7 BEST BRA STYLES FOR PLUS SIZES IN 2021 Elomi Charley The style: A T-shirt braThe bra to try: Elomi Charley Spacer T-Shirt BraThe sizes: bands 34-46; cups DD-HH (UK) Everybody needs a T-shirt bra for most of our days, but Charley blows every preconception about a boring, plain, shapeless version right out of the water. The spacer fabric is super soft and light, with an attractive keyhole cutout in the center gore–a breath of fresh air in the bigger sizes, which tend to lean toward the super-structured end of the spectrum. Delicate textures of flat lace on the cups and straps give it eye-appeal when you can see it but disappear under clothes. The cups with power mesh wings give great support and a smooth, rounded shape; the wide, completely adjustable straps are positioned so as not to slip. And we love all the color options in this one great style, too. Writes our customer Serina of the Elomi Charley, “Awesome bra! I don’t usually write reviews, but in the last 2 months, I have returned 5 bras that in one way or another did not work for me. 38 J is not an easy find. I wanted to give up when I decided I would try one more. This bra fits great! No extra boob spillover, straps stay up, support is awesome, and I don’t bounce when I walk. If you’re on the fence, buy it. I love love love it!” Elomi Cate The style: A side support braThe bra to try: Elomi Cate Side Support BraThe sizes: bands 34-46; cups DD-K (UK) Now that you’ve got your T-shirt bra figured out, it’s time to consider a four-part-cup bra, which relies on side support panels and seams to lift and shape your breasts like you wouldn’t even believe they could look. Except definitely believe it, because Cate has north of 500 5-star reviews who love its aesthetics—shimmering satiny fabric, chic embroidery, pleated straps—as much as its great fit and smoothing powers. The price is right for a bra of this pedigree, and the color palette is enough to make your day, every day, for two weeks. Says Katherine H. in her write-up, “I’ve tried about 100 bras the last few years and have finally found the perfect one! Usually bras start out okay but, within hours, lose their shape and have no support. This style was exactly the same after a twelve-hour work shift: amazing fit and comfort for larger cup sizes. Best bra ever.” Elomi Sachi The style: A sexy braThe bra to try: Elomi Sachi Side Support Cage BraThe sizes: bands 34-46; cups DD-JJ (UK) Yet again, Elomi absolutely nails it with a black bombshell that flatters in every direction while giving the illusion that you’re all dressed down in a barely-there bra. Similar to the popular Matilda Side Support Plunge, Sachi uses those multi-part cups and power mesh side wings to shape your chest, but it does so in diaphanous mesh and delicate straps reminiscent of butterfly wings. Sachi is the idyllic intersection of sexy, style and support. Tiffany, a 42H, agrees: “This bra is beautiful, and the support is AHH-mazing. I put it on and immediately came back and ordered two more. The shoulder straps don’t dig, and neither does the underwire. There is NO spillage on the sides or over the edges of the cup. My girls look great, and did I say how sexy this bra is? The cage is comfortable and a classy peek-a-boo show. You will not be disappointed!”  Goddess Celeste The style: Wire-freeThe bra to try: Goddess Celeste Wire-Free BraThe sizes: bands 34-50, cups H-O Of course, not every day (these days especially) calls for a high profile; sometimes, all we want is comfort and containment. On those mornings, reach for the Celeste: This bra is unlined and un-wired, but she is also seamed and non-stretchy, with inner slings for support. The finished look is minimalist—simple and smooth—with a discrete second-skin-like fit that won’t leave you lamenting the absence of an underwire. “These bras are pure comfort and provide excellent support for us busty gals!” said Sabrena. “This bra feels great! I am a 42O and, after years of wearing underwire bras, I wished there was one that was wire-free. I’ve found it,” said TaKendra. Glamorise Wonderwire The style: A front-close braThe bra to try: Glamorise Wonderwire Front-Close BraThe sizes: bands 34-48, cups B-H If you haven’t made Wonderwire’s acquaintance yet, you should probably be sitting down for this: You aren’t not seeing things; this bra really does have almost a thousand near-perfect ratings. To see it is to love it. Let’s be honest, a front-close is so nice every now and again for getting into and out of. This bra is so good with curves because it has them—the shapely silhouette conforms so nicely to the body, from the wide straps to the U-shaped back. The colors, the prints, the lace all make it an actual pleasure to put on. What you can’t see, though, is what makes the wire so wonderful: It’s tucked into a padded tunnel behind the padded comfort underband so you don’t feel it. Like, at all, ever. “I have always had back pain and could not find a bra that was supportive, full-coverage and still fashionable, until this bra,” Maria wrote us. “I first bought it in black and white and later 3 more colors. I hardly ever leave reviews, but I feel just love it and so happy I found it!” Glamorise Sports Bra The style: A sports braThe bra to try: Glamorise Medium Impact Wire-Free Sports BraThe sizes: bands 34-50, cups C-J  Continuing right on down the list of key kinds of bras is a really good sports bra, which calls for the trifecta of serious support, separation and style. Check, check, check: Curves need look no further than this archetype, a compression and encapsulation-style design that halts bounce in its tracks and dispenses with that sticky, sweaty layer lesser bras leave behind. It’s breathable, it’s comfortable and it goes without saying that it’s supremely functional. Oh, and it looks cool, too.  “One of my favorites!” customer Kendra said. “I have worn one of these for years and it remains in perfect condition. I also ordered a new one in a smaller band size to accommodate for weight loss. The bra fits excellent and is attractive. I like everything covered up, so I’m very happy with the high panel front, which is one of my reasons for purchasing. This will always be my go-to work out bra, as you can’t do much better for the price and quality.”  Wacoal Perfect Primer The style: UnlinedThe bra to try: Wacoal Perfect Primer BraThe sizes: bands 32-46, cups C-I  Rounding out our all-star team would be a bra that’s all you—unlined and stretchy but by no means unsupportive (have no fear, the underwire is still here!). If comfy full coverage with a barely-there feel sounds like heaven to you, try the Perfect Primer. It comes in a sophisticated palette of muted hues that have the slightest edge of lace trim, cradling you for the most naturally perfect fit. “At last! I have been searching for the perfect bra and finally found it! I wear a size 32 or 34G and am not symmetrical, so it has been a difficult task. This bra is lovely, extremely comfortable and supportive. The fabric is so soft and the underwire doesn’t dig in. Nothing bulges, and the breasts are held within the line of the body. I hope Wacoal never discontinues this one,” said Cherise. Source link

Source link
