Sakamoto Tatsuma - Summer

Summary (based on DeepL translations. Take with a grain of salt):

Reader and Sakamoto are at a summer festival, and he suggests trying out one of the games. He ends up trying the game where you have to knock out one of the prizes with a toy gun, and being the gunslinger that he is, knocks a lot of the prizes down.

The man running the stall gets annoyed and tells him that it's one prize per person. So Sakamoto encourages Reader to give it a try as well, gently guiding their hand and offering tips. Reader ends up barely hitting one of the prizes, unable to knock it down. The man running the stand teases them, saying that Reader was more focused on the man next to them (Sakamoto) than on the prize.

Of course this leads to Sakamoto teasing the Reader as well. When he notices how flustered they're getting, he offers one of the prizes he won as a gift...

...except it's a NSFW magazine. Before he could explain that he meant to give Reader another prize he won (a mini fan set), he gets punched in the face. RIP buddy.

Now, because you love Naruto, Gintama, and Attack On Titan (your top 3 anime from your profile), can I ask your opinions on these ships : Naruto/Sasuke & Hashirama/Madara , Levi/Erwin & Eren/Armin, and Gintoki/Takasugi & Gintoki/Hijikata? Sorry, if you don't ship them, I don't mean anything negative, just want to know your thoughts on them because I love your writings....🤩💐

Hey! Apologies for the delay... Thanks for sending me an ask!🪷 Sure, I don't mind at all. In fact, I'd love an excuse to talk about MXTX's works!💫 I have read SVSSS too, but I haven't watched the donghua past the first 2 episodes—since I really couldn't stand the art style/3D CGI. I have very complicated thoughts about SVSSS though, which is why I don't talk about it much here—even though I read SVSSS fics all the time.

Before I start sharing my thoughts on the ships listed, I'd like to clarify that this is solely my opinion, and I have no intention of insulting anyone for their preferences. Although I'd like to think that I have broad, flexible tastes when it comes to ships—I am actually quite finicky. Oftentimes I'll ship one pairing but not another, despite their comparable dynamics and tropes.

❉ Naruto/Sasuke

Naruto was my very first anime, and at the time I had absolutely no concept of BL and M/M pairings since I was new to fandom, fanfiction, and shipping culture in general. So at the time I naturally mostly gravitated towards the canonical and M/F pairings in the show. Retrospectively, I can definitely see why people ship them since they have so much development and symbolism supporting them. However, somehow I still can't bring myself to say I outright ship them since I never got into the pairing as I was watching the series. If I had to describe it more coherently, then I'd say that I feel like that ship has sailed for me—and I can no longer really see them as anything other than a platonic duo. If I were to watch the show for the first time right now, I'd definitely ship them—which is why I greatly respect the pairing. They are one of my favourite anime duos, though. I don't know if that made any sense. Sorry if I came across as hypocritical.

❉ Hashirama/Madara

Everything I said about Naruto and Sasuke applies here too—albeit to a lesser extent since I'm not the biggest fan of Madara and Hashirama individually as characters. I don't dislike them, but there are so many characters in the series I like more.

❉ Levi/Erwin

To be honest, I don't ship them. Is it because I fangirl over Levi? Probably. Is it because I disliked Erwin's character until relatively recently? Also probably.

❉ Eren/Armin

As an EreMika shipper, I don't ship Eren and Armin together. People will criticise me for this, but I've grown to detest Armin since the middle of Season 4. I wasn't always an avid supporter of EreMika, but they've really grown on me. Even so, I never perceived Eren and Armin's dynamic as anything more than platonic.

❉ Gintoki/Takasugi

I do ship Gintoki and Takasugi together! GinTaka/TakaGin is probably my second favourite ship for Gintoki. They narrowly missed the cut-off for my top 30 favourite ships post-series. I only started shipping them towards the end of Gintama and have grown to like them even more after the final movie... That cherry blossom boat scene was everything! I wish we could've gotten more of them in the series—since I've always enjoyed their interactions, even before I shipped them. Although they initially appear to be diametrically opposed due to their conflicting ideologies—nevertheless, I firmly believe they embody the birds-of-a-feather trope well. In addition to having similar demeanours, they are both haunted by the guilt of losing their sensei. For a long time after the Joui War, Gintoki was the object of Takasugi's hatred—but he was also the life force Takasugi relied on to continue existing. However, it is later revealed that Takasugi was merely projecting his self-hatred onto Gintoki. Although their dynamic has undergone a significant transformation over time—resulting in a relationship that is both complex and robust—they have both played an integral part in each other's lives. On a less serious note, Gintoki is such a shippable character lol. I fear in my mind, he has a thing for smokers.

❉ Gintoki/Hijikata

Although I have a much stronger preference for GinTsu and GinTaka, I also like GinHiji. Their antics are always hilarious to see unfold, and their banter is enjoyable. Like GinTsu and GinTaka, their great chemistry stems from their numerous similarities as well as their differences. Although GinHiji receives a fair amount of growth during the series, I believe that, overall, GinTaka has greater development while GinTsu has a stronger basis founded on their similar backstories and matching symbolism.

❉ Toga/Ochako

I don't mind Toga/Ochako, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I ship it either. Initially, I didn't quite understand why people shipped them until I watched EP158. I understand the hype now but am not invested enough in either character for me to ship it. For me to ship a pairing��aside from their dynamic and development—I need to have an interest in both characters individually. Any support I show towards the ship will always be motivated by my desire to eliminate Uraraka as a potential love interest for Izuku—which is why I can't commit to saying I ship it with pure intentions. That being said, I still think they have more compelling development than IzuOcha/UraDeku.

❉ Satoru/Suguru

A lot of people have a lot to say about me not shipping these two when I like FushiIta/ItaFushi and Shiguang (from Link Click), especially given the multiple parallels between these ships. As for why I don't ship them, I really don't know. I respect the ship and see where people are coming from, given the abundance of symbolism and tropes associated with them. However, I still can't quite commit to shipping them. If I had to come up with a justification, I'd probably blame the series' structure, as watching JJK 0 before the Hidden Inventory Arc made me more reluctant to become attached to them as a pairing. I find it difficult to become invested in a pairing that I know is doomed before I've had an opportunity to form an attachment—so far, only two ships have broken this mould for me. It's somewhat hypocritical of me, I'll admit, because virtually any M/M ship in a shounen anime is practically guaranteed to remain non-canon. Nevertheless, they are among my favourite platonic duos in the series, as I really enjoy their chemistry with one another—specifically during the Hidden Inventory Arc. In my opinion, Fushiguro and Itadori prevailed because they were honest and communicated with one another—which was something Gojo and Geto failed to do, and that ultimately caused their downfall.

I hope I didn't miss anything. Also, I tend to write with less formality in asks than in my analysis posts. I know you said that you liked my writing style, so I hope my more relaxed tone here wasn't disappointing. I'd also like to reiterate that these were merely my opinions, and I had no intention of offending anyone.😅

revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else

attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time

yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end

oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.

demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared

durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.

gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points

chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.

perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10

vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow

buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character

serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s

trigun stampede – they yassified them!

mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites

to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.

zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!

terror in resonance – utterly forgettable

dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs

bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope

lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians

classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually

romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it

free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve

wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience

hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.

durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short

land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me

tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast

mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive

bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems

no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.

Anime I Watched in 2023, Part 1:

1. God Troubles Me 5/5

This is technically called a donghua but we’ll consider this an anime for this list. This show is the Chinese version of Gintama and I am for it. It so hilariously charming that I got addicted quickly. There wasn’t a single character that I disliked. In fact, there wasn’t a single episode that made me bored. The animation style was godly that it definitely gave a lot of Japanese anime a run for their money. Please, please, please give this one a chance.

2. Mob Psycho 100 100/10

Epic. Brilliant. Heart warming. Those are not enough to describe how much I loved this anime but it’ll have to do. Seriously, this one blew me away. I thought it was just a quirky anime about a middle schooler going psycho whenever he’s pissed but I’m so glad I was wrong. The second season caught me by surprise; it’s definitely my favorite of the three. Mob’s character development happened so effortlessly that I actually had to take a moment to let it all seep in on how much he changed. Also Reigen is the best Master in the anime universe, hands down. His confession to Mob at the end brought tears to my eyes, he truly cared for Mob.

3. Charlotte 4/5

Absolutely loved this one. The reason that this didn't get 5 stars was because the ending felt a bit rushed. Also, I didn't like Kumagami dying. He was such a vital character that I felt like we should've explored more. If I was the MC I would've definitely travelled back in time just to save him. Overall, I highly recommend this anime.

4. Barakamon 5/5

After watching a depressing anime like Charlotte, you definitely need something lighthearted to watch and this was really got me out of my funk. I wasn't expecting this to be so funny, honestly. This was such a warm, funny, slice of life that made me crave living in the countryside.

5. Blue Lock 5/5

Ok I have to admit I didn't start off liking this one. Isagi's whining was grating on my nerves. Thankfully, I have learnt the error of my ways and have now come to realize that Isagi is HIM! Holy crap the development of this boy was crazzzzyy. There are so many interesting characters in this show that I was confused who was the real main character. Also, it was so refreshing to have an anime without the power of friendship; it was every man for themselves and I was absolutely there for it.

6. Play It Cool Guys 5/5

Ahhhh this was such a cute wholesome anime! If you're stressed out with life please just watch these adorkable group of young men try to navigate their lives. It was so nice to see the uncool side of guys for once. The episodes were short and sweet and I really hope we get another season of them.

7. Tomo-chan is a Girl! 5/5

This was such a funny and sweet show. I'm always a sucker for friends to lovers romance so this was right up my alley. This anime also had so many charming side characters that I couldn't but fall in love with them also.

8. Ice Guy and his Cool Work Colleague 5/5

I felt so single watching this. How do I sign up to work at their company? I swear everyone was finding love and being all happy while all I get in my workplace is stress and more stress. It was also so refreshing to have a romance anime with adults and not high schoolers.

9. Demon Slayer Season 3 5/5

Another great season to another great anime. Can I just add that I loved the OP from episode one while everyone was hating on it; it was such a banger! The animation was once again top tier that I can't wait to see what the studio does when animating the last arc. This was a tough season to compete with the flashy brilliance of Tengen's last season but they did wonderfully. I'm glad I got to see my baby girl Mitsuri finally animated.

10. My Love For Yamada -kun is Lv 999 5/5

I watched the first episode right after it aired and I knew I couldn't hold out for another week. I devoured the manga! It was that good. The anime definitely didn't disappoint. This was such a sweet, comforting anime that put my cynical heart at ease. I really hope that we get more seasons because my boy Yamada is the standard!

Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is also a good anime to watch! I only like the first 25 episodes but most of the anime community agrees Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is one of the best anime out there.

There's also the older ones like Naruto, Bleach, Gintama (the funniest anime imo 😆) and probably a lot more I'm not remembering. But this is the list off the top of my head.

Kamui - Spring

Summary (based on machine tl)

*DEFINITELY take this one with a grain of salt because kamui’s speech didnt make sense at times

Kamui is up relaxing on a tree and spots Reader down below. He calls her “kitten” and asks what’s she doing in a place like this. He hops off the tree branch and wonders if she’s a spy from an enemy organization, which she quickly denies.

It turns out reader wanted to see the cherry blossoms but ended up getting lost. He jokingly calls her a “stray”, but when reader asks about him, he claims that he’s just a rabbit sunbathing. He gets asked about why he’s carrying an umbrella around when sunbathing, and he laughs it off, saying it’s because of the cherry blossom petals (liar). Without an umbrella, he’ll get buried underneath the petals like a corpse.

He changes the subject and starts leaning closer to the reader. Without warning, he kisses her. He notices that reader has a couple of cherry blossom petals on her head and brushes it off. When asked why he kissed reader, he explains that he simply took it as an advance payment of thanks and thanks her for the meal (kamui pls).

Someone starts calling for him and Kamui mentions that someone troublesome has arrived. Abuto appears and starts scolding him for lazing around since he had been looking everywhere for him. He’s also pretty peeved to find Kamui flirting with a woman.

Kamui bids farewell to the reader and before he leaves, he warns, “Be careful. Don't get carried away by the cherry blossoms.”

Katsura Biologist Post

I haven't finished a fic in forever but I wrote 1k words about Katsura and his constitution and how him being a genius politician is actually really smart and well supported by the story. This contains major spoilers for season 4 of Gintama.

Another headcanon I don’t think is true but really like is the idea that Elizabeth has been slipping various antidepressants and other medicines to Katsura the whole time and the day she chose space Adderall he drinks his tea as usual, goes to his office as usual, locks his door and doesn’t come out for three days.  No one knows what to do, but hell, it’s Zarump, who knows what he’s thinking?  And three days later he leaves his office and he doesn’t look any different from when he went in, and he drops about a ream of paper on his secretary's desk and announces he’s taking the rest of the week off.  And she thumbs through it listlessly and there’s writing on every single page, front and back, with no corrections, and she asks him what it is, and he replies, “It’s a constitution.  I was thinking we needed one,” and then he walks off.  And she reads a little bit and it’s absolutely incomprehensible to her, so she calls someone who deals with legal jargon and he starts reading it and it’s absolute nonsense and he thinks, “Zarump-san is playing a joke,” and he decides he’d better read it so he doesn’t get in trouble but he’s not looking forward to it…

…and a few pages in it’s like a magic eye poster and it clicks-

It’s brilliant.  Everything works, the jargon makes it sound like incomprehensible bullshit but if you cut away the red tape then you get a perfectly balanced constitution.  It won’t insult the Amanto, but it retains autonomy for Japanese citizens.  What looks like a tough policy on criminals hides plans to offer services to marginalized and unhoused people.  It promotes equality.  It has long term plans to help ease the populace into the more radical changes.  It provides relief to citizens whose lives were upended by the battle of Edo.  It shouldn’t work, and if you took out a single paragraph it would fall to pieces, but it works.

He calls an emergency meeting and all the heads of state get together and they can’t explain it but it solves all the problems that people had been trying to foist onto others for months.  None of them can believe that idiot came up with this.  Of course they’re going to put it into action, but they have innumerable questions.  They call Zurump’s villa and gets a servant who announces that he’s not taking calls right now, and turns the camera to show Katsura in Elizabeth footie pajamas in the middle of the day, watching a Korean drama on the theater TV, eating popcorn and explaining to Elizabeth that the real killer is the porter in the first scene that didn’t even get a face reveal.  He’s right but his logic is 100% unhinged speculation.  Elizabeth is hanging on every word like it’s a religious manifesto.  The servant informs them that he’s not taking calls for the rest of the week, not because he’s avoiding them but because it’s over and it never occurred to him that there would be questions because it addressed the issues.  

And they just shake their heads and are glad he’s on their side.

Like I don’t think he’s a savant (I do strongly believe he’s autistic, but that’s another post) but I do believe he’s normally the smartest and the dumbest person in the room.  And  I think the constitution is baffling on purpose because he didn’t want anyone to mess with it (for instance, less accepting officials can’t just cut out the equality because it’s woven into the constitution) but it’s also oblique because he does not think like other people think. 

And I think the series does establish that, strange as he is, he’s a great leader and a strategist, and he’s also very good at getting people to underestimate him.  Especially in the episode Zura, Sakamoto says the war would be lost without Katsura’s guidance.  The soldiers agree and even refer to him as the leader of the Joui 4 but it never occurred to them that he was strong because he likes to give the impression he’s not important.  He was a total dumbass when he got taken by Prince Hata in the end arc, but he also shows shrewd strategizing when he wants Hata to declare war and then flee.  He doesn’t want unnecessary loss of life, even when it’s not his men, and he rightly choses plans that are more destructive in terms of property damage if they result in less loss of life. He wants to buy time, and of course, he has 100% faith that Gintoki will take care of the mess on earth if they can just give him the time.  He didn’t become Prime Minister for power, he became PM because there was a need for someone to do a lot of thankless work and be hated for it.  I think he’s in his best element when he’s handling jobs that would drive other people crazy, because it’s the only thing that can occupy his mind enough to get him to focus.

Anyway, I could keep going forever, but if I don’t stop I will go forever.  It seems like a lot of people think that Katsura is just a silly character and  trying to assign meaning to his actions ruins that, but I think they can both be true. He’s a brilliant war hero with  a traumatic past and crippling PTSD (I actually think he has CPTSD because of the homelessness, but that’s also another post)  and he’s also a goofy dumbass who manages to get through life despite having no self awareness.  He’s both.  Get you a guy that can do both.

Anyway, just my personal views and not to be taken as my argument that these things are canon.

1. Gintama!!!

Whenever I'm feeling down I just watch this show. It does it's comedy really well. My favorite arcs are the lottery win arc and the reunion/kuroko no basuke parody mini-arc.

2. Doraemon

. . . Don't judge me! It's the first comic book collection I owned since it's relatively cheap. I still remember sobbing to the volume 6 ending when I was in 4rth grade. I thought it was the angstiest shit. Also my introduction to Japanese folktales.

3. Bad Buddy

Recent addition. Just something about the family dynamics that makes me writhe in an unpleasant personal way. 11/10 would torture myself thinking of Pran's family dynamics.

4 and 5. Julie and the Phantoms/My School President

This list makes makes me look 12 doesn't it? Ah who cares! I love a good musical. Especially a classic highschool teen as a protaganist. Musically, I like My School President's OST better but I really really love Julie. (Also both of these won't get a season 2).

6. Bocchi the Rock

A recent addition! . . . And another high school musical. I love fluff, friendships, interpersonal, and internal conflicts. My love for musicals like fulfills my need for real life friends who are attentive to your needs and wants and is there when you need them.

7. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble!

Anyone remember the time when Taiwanese dramas were all the rage back in early to late 2000's in Asia? Taiwan came in clutch and showed us how great they are at acting, writing, and nuance. Sobbed myself to the point of dehydration during the John Doe arc. I really like dramas with a slice of life-ish feel to it.

8. Avatar: The Last Airbender

I spend too much of my idle time arguing the pros and cons of different elements as if I can actually become a bender. So far I settled on earth as my element. It's just so fun. I hope there's an atla interest revival every 5 years.

9. Good Omens

One of my forever fandoms. I have a copy of the book that looks like shit but that's only because it is so loved. Everytime I crack it open, intending to only read the first few pages I end up nearly halfway to rereading it. And the tv live adaptation was so good. It's like Aziraphale and Crowley walked off the fandom's collective imagination and into the screen. I hope we get season 3 and I hope it's smooth sailing. I always wanted to write something for this fandom but watching the television made me realize British English is a whole 'nother beast and I'd rather not make a fool of myself.
