Prince Draco Underground by PacificRimbaud
Prince Draco Underground (5000 words) by PacificRimbaud Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy Characters: Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter Additional Tags: Fae & Fairies, Claustrophobia, Asphyxiation Summary:
Of her lover’s many faults and arguable virtues, he's never late. So when 8 o’clock runs into 10, 12 ticks into 2, and Hermione's third note of rationally tempered concern flies unanswered back to sender, she panics.
“He's probably sick,” says Harry. “You both work in a hospital. The place where diseases live.”
“When has he ever,” says Hermione, “failed to advertise a twinge?”
Outside the Malfoy Manor gates, the grass is green.
Inside the fence—
“Go home,” says Harry gravely.
“Go to hell,” Hermione replies.
And because that is that, they plod up the drive and strain open the door to a landscape of ominous white.

i think one of the things that immensely increases my goodwill toward firefly wedding (in the sense that i normally run from yandere characters like i'm running from the plague) is that shinpei's behavior is both clearly shown to be a product of his childishness and lack of understanding of what actual love (in any of its forms, be it familial or romantic) looks and feels like AND portrayed as deeply upsetting and destructive.
i keep thinking back to his and satoko's conversation about what love is/entails on chapter 19 and how it ends with satoko telling him he "doesn't get it at all" and it ends on a comic and light-hearted note but i still find it immensely revealing when it comes to shinpei's mindset. because it's true, he doesn't get it. love for him is a person never leaving, never establishing a boundary, and it's wrong and sickening and twisted but your heart breaks for him a little because he so clearly holds those same beliefs about himself. there is nothing he won't do, no sacrifice he won't make to keep satoko by his side. to remain beneath the light of her love.
but the understanding and empathy the narrative makes you have towards him doesn't blunt the genuine danger he poses to other characters and even satoko herself at times, and i think that's so important, especially because it makes other characters' negative reactions to him all the more plausible. like yeah, he IS scary!!
long story short firefly wedding has given me brainworms
#i read it in one night and i am so obsessed#i never read yandere mangas but like this is different because they actually get into the interesting dynamics it creates which i think is#the whole allure to the yandere trope anyway. like why is he like this and how satoko sees him as unusual as well and has empathy for him#but does not ACCEPT that side of him completely even though shinpei is convinced he loves her exactly because she accepts him#but i think what satoko accepts is his underlying reality like seeing through all that yandere exterior to his actual core of#having being abandoned as a child and tossed out into a disgusting world. and that core of an unloved child is what she accepts but not the#weird creepy things that make him do. and she tells him this. and she tells him that she wants him to change. by loving him. so he is happy#even when she is not there (which is an important point because she is terminally ill) so even if they get their happy ending it's not goin#to be long-lasting. she wants him to become a whole person whose bar for loving someone is not that they accept him and that's it.#also like literally every character is making the other realise that they are their own person they can make their own selfish choices#from shinpei to satoko to kotaro#sorry about the tags i'm actually obsessed with it#also i love thinking of shinpei as a yandere romance manga version of luffy and how it would irritate every one i tell this to lmao#firefly wedding#romance manga

it's so funny to me how when Spike first appears I knew from just clips and edits that I'm definitely the target audience for him but since he was so evil I was just waiting to figure out how they'll make me like him and then when he started cracking jokes I was like oh. they made him funny. and I obviously knew he'd get with Buffy eventually but then I was like OH. they made him a simp! and I was already obsessed with the fact that he loved Buffy and took care of Dawn and everything when he didn't have a soul (Angel could never) but then I was like OH. HE GOT HIS SOUL FOR HER. and like? funny would've done it for me but he went all out

when my opinion on a book goes against the goodreads consensus: proof that i'm right, since it takes somebody with wisdom and taste to understand this book's true value
when my opinion agrees with the goodreads consensus: as you can see, this opinion is objectively correct, as proven by how many people agree with me
