okay yes im finally doing it. hi

i love luffy and nami. i think they both draw out the best in eachother in the sense they go directly against what theyd usually do just so the other can be happy in a non resentful way.

i read an essay that briefly mentioned luffy and namis relationship once and it said "luffy is always ultimately under the control of nami, who is motherly and thats gender roles" and i dont think that's true. id go as far as to say thats a bad faith interpretation of their relationship (and nami as a character. no female character should ever be called motherly especially nami gross)

what ultimately makes them different from what that person was talking about is they go out of their way to draw out the best in eachother and they dont resent eachother for it in the way one might would think of an archetypal mother/son or husband/wife relationship. theyre very much on equal grounds, and respect eachother and dont undermine eachothers authority nor does luffy treat listening to nami like its a core for the most part (if he does do that its equal to the other characters in the group)

it makes them an endearing team and compelling relationship in a way that is often, i feel, dismissed by even other one piece analyzers. namis role in the crew is not only a navigator but to help where luffys leadership tends to wain (much like zoros role) and i think they work so efficiently together people don't appreciate them as much as they should.

i don't think there's another relationship like theirs in era-typical shonen let alone shonen as a whole. luffy is namis manic pixie dreamboy, and if it were any other story that would be flipped.
