Malcolm Macleod of Raasay was born on November 15th 1911, he was commonly known as Calum and is most famous for the road he build, mainly on his own on the Island he lived most of his life.
Calum was the son of Donald Macleod of Arnish Raasay and Julia Gillies of Fladda, he was born in Glasgow, his dad was in the Merchant Navy.
Calum and his mother moved to the croft and house adjacent to that of his grandfather, in northern Raasay. Calum had two brothers, Ronald and Charles, and three sisters, one of whom, Bella Dolly (died in the Spanish flu outbreak in 1919)
Calum attended Torran school, with its single teacher, James Mackinnon (Seumas Ruadh). He married Alexandrina (Lexie) Macdonald (1911–2001).
Calum and his brother, Charles, constructed the track from Torran to Fladda on a small isle off Raasay called Eilean Fladda, which is now uninhabited. I took them three years and were paid £35 a year by the local council.
After decades of unsuccessful campaigning by the inhabitants of the north end of Raasay for a road, and several failed grant applications, Calum decided to build the road himself. Purchasing Thomas Aitken's manual Road Making & Maintenance: A Practical Treatise for Engineers, Surveyors and Others (London, 1900), for half a crown he started work, replacing the old narrow footpath. Over a period of about ten years (1964–1974), he constructed one and three quarter miles of road between Brochel Castle and Arnish, using little more than a shovel, a pick and a wheelbarrow.
Initial blasting work was carried out and funded, to the sum of £1,900, by the Department of Agriculture's Engineering Department, who supplied a compressor, explosives, driller, blaster, and men.
Several years after its completion, the road was finally adopted and surfaced by the local council. By then, Calum and his wife, Lexie, were the last inhabitants of Arnish. Sadly Calum's Road, and those in general on the island are reported to have been deterioating in the past 20 years or so, which is sad........

The Last Bus (2021) Review
The Last Bus (2021) Review
Pensioner Tom is about to embark on an incredible trip from Britain’s most northerly point John O’Groats to his original home town at the most southernly point Land’s End, all after his wife Mary has just passed away. Using buses with his free bus pass and having to stick to a very well worked out route, not wanting anyone to touch his small suitcase. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (more…)

Konusuna gelince; iki kız çocuklu İngiltereli bir kadın tası tarağı toplayarak Fas’a yerleşir.

Happy Birthday actress Laura Fraser, born July 24th 1976 in Glasgow.
Laura attended Hillhead High School and is a former member of the Scottish Youth Theatre. She trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
During her time there, she got a supporting role in Gillies MacKinnon's film Small Faces. This was on top of a couple of other minor roles she had taken (such as 'Big Day for the Bad Guys). The college authorities took a pretty dim view of the amount of professional work she had been taking on, questioning her commitment to the course.
Having not been enjoying her time at the Academy, and encouraged by her parents, she dropped out after a year and moved to London.
Later on, she has appeared in numerous films in supporting roles, but always noticeable as lead characters. All these roles have demonstrated her versatility in characterisation and style to the full.
From the fantasy of ‘Neverwhere’, a comedy of ‘Virtual Sexuality’, the Shakespearean drama of ‘Titus’, emotional drama of ‘Forgive and Forget’ and slapstick of ‘Kevin and Perry’. She effortlessly adapts to all the genres, very seldom was she cast as characters with her native Scottish accent.
After appearing in the 2003 Irish comedy, Coney Island Baby, Laura relocated to the US where she married Irish-born American author actor and club owner Michael Geary,.
She landed a role in the well regarded US TV movie, Iron Jawed Angels. In early 2005, Laura returned to live in Glasgow with her husband and stepdaughter, and a desire to start a family and focus on local work. She found she was pregnant in late 2005, and spent time working as a choreographer on a pantomime written by her father 'Oh Yes He Is!' for the charity Sense Scotland.
In May 2006 she and Karl became proud parents of a baby girl. Laura intended to not work for 12 months and be a full-time mum, but by September 2006 she was back making a film for the BBC.
Other TV roles for Laura include, Casanova, Ian Rankin's Reichenbach Falls and Florence Nightingale and her role in the US series Breaking Bad and spinn-off Better Call Saul as Lydia Rodarte-Quayle.
Laura maybe a star over the pond nowadays, but she has also been cast in some great shows based in Scotland, including Traces with Martin Compston, and Crime with Ken Stott and Dougray Scott,
Next up for Laura in anpther crime drama, Patience, a 6-part police crime set in York , it should hit our screens before the end of the year.

The Playboys - Irish courtship
Seem to be a lot of movie rentals in 1992 that I've largely forgotten other than the main cast and a frief synopsis. Here's another one. Another romance and colorful 'Irish' tale, but with American actors trying to pull off the 'brogues'.
Robin Wright Penn plays a young village girl who is an unwed mother, and gets wooed by an assortment of characters in 1950's Ireland. Aidan Quinn plays a member of a travelling dramatic troupe who stirs up the romantic pot. Aidan Quinn has always seemed like a much better actor than the roles he seems to habitually get, and its a shame his star hasn't risen much higher than it has.
Overall, I seem to remember this one being a cut above most of the other dreck, but I've had no overreaching ambition to ever see it again.
Also, it's kind of an oddity to have an Irish film that doesn't have Colm Meany or Brendan Gleeson somewhere in the cast.
3 stars out of 5

Whisky Galore (2017)
FILM REVIEW: Whisky Galore (2017) @WhiskyGaloreMov #whisky #scotland
To think that Peter McDougall, the writer of hard-hitting sectarian dramas such as Just Another Saturday and Just A Boy’s Game, as well as the gritty Jimmy Boyle biopic A Sense of Freedom, has penned a script which at best can be described as underwhelming and at worst as flat as a witch’s ***!
To think that Gillies MacKinnon, the director and co-writer of Small Faces which won Best New British…
