Along the Road

Or, Rose Red meets the Fiddler and talks with the Pusher, across four generations. A gift fic for @lucemiir, for the Malloysical secret Santa!

1.

The world was covered in brilliant white snow. The only non-white colors as far as the eye could see were the dark gray of hearth smoke and the crimson scarf that just peeked into Red’s vision. There might have been other things she missed, but her glasses were so fogged she couldn’t see a damn thing. She hadn’t counted on being outside in the middle of December.

She also hadn’t counted on being exiled from her village for murder, had she?

The council had picked the right time to do it, too. The ocean was far too cold to gather any salt, and the village could survive without her in the spring. They wouldn’t miss Red for anything.

She’d miss her village, though, if only for the food and shelter that it gave her when she couldn’t work. And now that was gone…

Red forced herself to open her eyes. She was following the River, and she couldn’t let herself off her course. If there were any other villages to be found, they’d be along the River just like hers. In the white dead of December, someone would want to offer her a meal.

It occurred to Red for the first time that her sister must have floated along this exact route. She smirked. She could picture Pearlie even now- dead on the water, golden skin showing only on her long, bony limbs, thin brown hair pulled from its neat braid.

Two black eyes, nowhere to be seen.

And her body must have washed up on the little bank here, and been seen by the man who lived in the house just a few yards away. Red could tell it was a man. No self-respecting woman would ever leave her home un-decorated so close to New Year’s.

Well, if the house was wanting for a woman, she could most certainly do that job. Red knocked at the door, feeling the little bits of warmth through the walls, listening for footsteps.

2.

“Wanna play twister?”

Eddie has stuff to do tonight. So does Pearl, apparently, so Brent is at the apartment Rose normally shares with her boyfriend. Rose doesn’t know why the two of them don’t hang out more often.

“I don’t think you can play twister with two people,” he says, raising an eyebrow. “Who would win?”

“It’s just for fun,” Rose retorts. “But I suppose we could just talk, if you want.”

“Please. Do you have any whiskey?”

“Boy, do I!”

Brent likes Evan Williams. Rose is partial to Jameson herself, but she has nothing against the former, even if it is suspiciously cheap. Most of her glasses are in the dishwasher, but Eddie bought two new ones last week, she’s sure of it.

“Hey, Brent?”

“Hm?”

“If you see two big glasses with little red swirlies on them, will you let me know?”

“Swirlies?”

Rose sighs. “I dunno what else to call them, wise guy.”

“Well, if you mean whorls, they’re right here on your table.”

“Sweet,” shouts Rose, bursting through the door with a big bottle of Evan Williams. “Now we can have a proper drink.”

“Please.”

3.

The first thing Red noticed upon entering the house was its roaring fireplace. Thank the gods, she said to herself. I was liable to die of hypothermia out in that nightmare.

The next thing she saw was the very confused face of the man who let her in.

“I don’t mean to intrude on whatever you’re… doing in my house,” the fellow said flatly, holding his door open. “But this isn’t a tavern, miss, and I’m not sure why you’re treating it as such, and please don’t put your feet on my-”

Red had already swung her boots onto the coffee table.

“…That’s really nice mahogany.”

“Sorry.”

“I don’t suppose you could tell me the meaning of all this, then?”

The gentleman had green eyes. Green, green, green like envy, green like the trees that had long stopped growing in Red’s village. Green, her opposite.

“I was exiled from my village two days ago and I’ve been trying to find somewhere to stay,” Red stated, trying to match his nonchalant tone. “The taverns won’t let me in, so I was just following the River and I found your place. Dunno if I can stay, but you’ve got a real nice fire going, so…”

He just looked at Red, if only for a moment. They’re not quite green, she thought. Hazel, more like. Or a yellowy-green, but that’s being generous.

“Why were you exiled?”

“What’s that?”

“Why were you-”

“Oh, just look at the color on that fiddle,” she cried, pretending not to have heard. “What is it, beech?”

His eyes lit up. “Would you believe me if I told you it was made of bone?”

Bone, bone, bone…

Red was too tired to put the pieces together.

“Tell me more.”

4.

“And all they ever found was the money and the clip-on tie!”

Rose can’t help but hide a smirk. She was expecting Brent to be able to hold his liquor. Either that, or he’d be a flirt or something. Maybe a really angry drunk, but never this.

“Really,” she says, making her eyes as wide as saucers. It’s a little like talking to a child, if the child was obsessed with DB Cooper.

“Really! Well, they didn’t find all the money. But this- this- ugh, just a sec-”

Brent pauses to reach for the long-empty bottle of Evan Williams. He sighs at its lightness, instead turning to Rose’s Jameson. He’s been through that routine at least six times since the bottle emptied. Rose doesn’t even mind, as long as it keeps him talking. This is hilarious.

“This little kid found a bunch of twenty-dollar bills in Tina Bar. Serial numbers all matched, and lemme tell you- everyone freaked out.”

“I mean, I would too.”

“Right?”

“Right, man!”

“Hello?”

Pearl is here to pick up her roommate. For all the time Rose has lived in this apartment, her sister is still apprehensive coming inside. Pearl isn’t afraid of a lot of things. It’s weird. Her eyes are weird. They’re so dark you can’t see where the pupil ends and the iris begins. They’ve always confused Rose.

Rose is also pretty tipsy right now.

“Come in,” she shouts. “Door’s unlocked, Pearlie, and you gotta hear this.”

“Hey, Pearl,” Brent slurs. “Did you know that DB Cooper-”

“Yes.”

It didn’t occur to Rose that Pearl has probably heard all of this a jillion times before. It must get old.

“We should probably get going,” says Pearl, facial expression barely moving. “It’s freezing outside.”

“D’you want my scarf?”

Both Rose and Pearl turn to look at the crimson scarf hanging on the wall. Rose hasn’t worn it in years. It’s old enough that she couldn’t give less of a crap if her sister never gave it back.

“Thanks, Rosie,” says Pearl with a little smile. “You stay warm, okay?”

They end up keeping in touch and Tim is a frequent visitor at the manor and befriends the majority of the Class

They all still keep up with their training, Sam and Valerie put together an obstacle course with the help of the jocks and every Saturday is a free-for-all battle royale with ecto guns set to their lowest setting across all of the grounds.

The last one standing gets to pick what restaurant dinner is from that night and the movie for movie night.

Tim does find all of this rather unusual, but mostly he finds that they remind him of all his hero friends.

This, more than anything else they do, makes him very concerned.

Why do these random midwesterners train like heroes? Why do they have a camaraderie he’s only seen forged on the same battlefield? He’s noticed they mostly defer to a group of five individuals. The pair of siblings who now own the Manor and the partners of one of said siblings. More than that, they all defer to Danny, the one he gave the keys to.

Luckily for him, Two Face happened to attack the bank that Danny was at and Danny did something he’d only ever seen Bruce manage to do and talked the villain down from the attack.

When asked, Dent just said that he saw a kinship in the kid, said he’d understood duality in a way that resonated with him.

Later that night Red Robin reopened the tunnels and paid one Daniel Fenton a visit. Tim found him in his father’s old study, using a brand new telescope through the window. He knocked and waited before entering.

“Ah, I expected one of you to show up. It’s why I decided to stay up tonight actually. We have a lot to talk about if you’ll take a seat? I’ll get us some energy drinks. You’ll be able to confirm they’re sealed and not poisoned that way. What’s your favorite flavor? Between the fifteen of us we’ve got to have the right flavor.”

Red Robin stood there for a moment, processing before following the man to his pantry. Once there he opened a new package of his favorite energy drink and opened it himself; not once did Danny make a fuss about him opening a whole new package. He grabbed a second one to bring with him back to the office. Danny grabbed a couple himself.

Once back in the office, they sat in two chairs across from each other. Danny leaned on his elbows with his fingers steepled. “What I am about to tell you is an incredible risk to everyone in this house, and likely yourself included. I need you to promise me to listen to everything I tell you before you start asking questions. I will answer them to the best of my ability after I have gone over the basics. What I am about to tell you is going to sound unbelievable, but I’m banking on the fact that you have likely frequently experienced impossible things and therefore may take me seriously.” Danny stared at the mask. “Now, what do you know about ghosts?”

Tim’s hair trigger was of disbelief, but then he paused and considered. Clark’s an alien, Diana’s a god, Conner’s a clone, at least half the family has come back to life. Why couldn’t ghosts exist? “Not much besides fairy tales.” He braced himself for what was to come.

Danny narrowed his eyes appraisingly. “Hmm. Well. They are, in fact, real. I’ll show evidence in a little bit. A Ghost as we know them is generally formed when a person’s emotions during death produce enough ectoplasm to give their sentience form. They then become residents of a place known by two names; the Ghost Zone, or the Infinite Realms. The Ghost Zone is what it’s known as on Earth, and the residents of the place itself call it the Infinite Realms.” Danny pauses here for a moment and then claps his hands. “Now, all ghosts are members of the Infinite Realms, but not all beings of the Infinite Realms are ghosts. The Realms is a dimension mirroring our own that is entirely made of ectoplasm. It’s where the residue from the emotions of all beings in our universe go and then are given form. There are beings there that are basically gods and are aspects given form. I can go on and on about the Realms later. What’s important is that throughout history there have been unstable naturally occurring portals between the two dimensions, but around five years ago, a pair of scientists managed to open a stable portal to this dimension. A few months later, a former college friend of theirs made a second stable portal, but I’ll get to him in a minute. Once this portal was established, it made it so that ghosts could now freely come into our world. A young hero took up protecting the city, but his first few attempts had quite a bit of misunderstanding to them and so he was villainized for a while. This resulted in the government establishing an agency to combat these threats. All well and good, right?” He raised an eyebrow at Tim. “You would think so. However, the laws passed to make this agency had some clauses that are questionable. I’ll just hand you a copy of the documentation so that you can read it.”

He handed Tim a folder labeled “Anti-Ecto Acts”. He began to peruse them and came upon the clause that declared any being that can process or contains ectoplasm is considered non-sentient or sapient and called for the capture, eradication, or experimentation of all such “ecto-beings”. “This, can’t be right. This is a blatant contradiction to the Meta Protection Acts.”

Danny smirked a sad smile. “You’d think, right?” He gave him a moment to process that. “You can read up more on that later. I have other things to say.” Tim set aside the folder and took a deep chug of his energy drink.

“Alright, hit me.” he said as he leaned forward to put his elbows on his knees, giving Danny his full attention.

“Kay, so, you notice the ‘any being that can process ectoplasm’ bit? Yeah, well that can apply to some humans too. Humans that are considered death-touched or Liminal. People who have been surrounded by death, have died even if momentarily on the operating table, but especially people who have been exposed to high levels of ectoplasm. Here’s the thing about living in a town with a stable portal to effectively the afterlife: it kinda does some stuff to you.” He flashed his eyes a Lazerus green as he set his right palm on the desk. He’s quiet for a moment before he leaned back with a sigh, then closed his eyes so they returned to their normal blue. 

“Every individual in my hometown is ecto-contaminated.” He said quietly, like, Tim supposes, he was telling a secret. Tim guesses he was. “Every person there is death-touched. Every person there is Liminal. Every person pings as an ecto-entity to the GIW. We’re all at risk. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the heroes would ping too. I need your help.” Danny turned begging eyes upon Red Robin. “I need your help, and you need this too because I noticed it when we first met, Tim, that you are too.”

Tim reeled, he stood and knocked his chair over. “Wh-what do you mean?” 

“How many times have you been near-death? How many times have you been around the dying? That sort of stuff leaves a mark on people. They begin to metabolize ectoplasm. I reckon that the majority of the Justice League apply. I’d argue that soldiers who have seen active combat would register on some sensors. According to those laws, you can be captured and experimented on. They’re luckily focusing on ghosts and have been ignoring people, but it’s only a matter of time. I need you to bring this to Batman, to the League. I need these Acts removed. They call for the eradication of my People” His eyes flashed a green again as the word resonated. “This calls for the eradication of an entire dimension, they’ve already tried it once, and if they had, it would have torn this universe apart. Luckily the nuke they had was a dud.” 

Tim swallowed at that. “Nuke? They tried to nuke an entire dimension?” Tim picked up the chair and sat heavily in it. “I’m going to guess that this somehow gets worse?”

Danny nodded solemnly. “You see, the Infinite Realms has a council and a king. A good majority of the council rightfully believes that these Acts are calling for the genocide of our people. The king has kept them at bay for now, but they’re calling for war.” 

Tim put his head in his hands and groaned. “And the king?” Danny looked at him, debating something for a moment. Then he stood and there was a flash of bright light. Stood in front of Red Robin could only be the King. Danny now had bright white hair and eyes that glowed with a familiar Lazarus green. He wore a cloak of stars and his crown looked like the Northern Lights. He wore armor that seemed to be a combination of the ancient Norse and Greeks. “I just want my people safe.”

Slayers Pokémon Teams: Sylphiel Nels Lahda

My fellow Slayers and Pokémon fans, we have come to the last team in this little series of mine. Fret not however, for I have saved one of my favorite characters for last. Everyone’s favorite hopeless romantic cleric, Sylphiel Nels Lahda.

Gardevoir: Gardevoir is a Pokémon known for many things. Being caring towards its trainer, having a great movepool full of specially offensive and support options, and being the most lewded Pokémon on the internet. However, what it is also known for is opening mother fucking BLACK HOLES when its trainer is threatened. This fits Sylphiel given how she’s all demure and shy usually, but when people she cares about, like Gourry or Lina, are threatened, she’ll whip out a mother fucking dragon slave. Also, considering she’s one of the better endowed cast members, her having a frequently lewded Pokémon fits.

Blissey: Here we have a Pokémon known for its healing powers and caring nature. Thus, it’s a good match for Sylphiel’s shrine maiden abilities. Also, it heals people and Pokémon by giving them the egg in its pouch and Sylphiel is known for her fantastic cooking.

Camerupt: This Pokémon represents Sylphiel’s admittedly limited capacity for destructive magic. Specifically it represents her ability to use Dragon Slave as its, in my opinion, one of her iconic feats.

Slurpuff: Here’s a Pokémon that more directly represents Sylphiel’s culinary acumen, as Slurpuff is a Pokémon based on a French merengue, which, based on what I’ve learned from YouTube, is a bitch and a half to make. Thus it’s fitting that this sentient mass of fairy flavored whipped egg whites is on Sylphiel’s team. After all, Sylphiel is enough of an epic chef to satisfy the absurd gourmands (read: gluttons) that are Lina and Gourry.

Shiny Alomomola: This is a fish Pokémon known for its healing abilities and tendency to hug Pokémon to facilitate said healing. This fits Sylphiel’s talents given her healing abilities and it serves as an homage to give really good emotional support to Lina when she’s around such as when she hugs Lina after she kills a reanimated child during the Hellmaster arc.

Trevenant: This Pokémon represents Sylphiel’s relationship with her incredibly dead hometown of Sairaag as well as the holy tree Flagoon which is equally as dead. Sylphiel is undoubtedly haunted by seeing almost everyone she loved and cared about, including her father, get blown up by copy Rezo, so a ghost Pokémon felt fitting. That it is a tree Pokémon is even more fitting given how Hellmaster destroyed Flagoon before his reanimate Sairaag shenanigans.

Welp, that’s the last of the Slayers Pokémon teams I’ll be making for the foreseeable future. It’s been fun and I’ve loved the feedback I’ve been receiving. I think I’ll start writing some Slayers fanfics I’ve been talking about on here. I’ve had one in my head where Sylphiel, after the events of Next, tries to get over her crush on Gourry only to fail at that and, to make matters worse, ends up crushing on Lina too (can you tell I’m a Lina x Sylphiel x Gourry shipper?).
