Eyy, so @raptorbricks tagged me for this like a week ago and I'm finally got around to it! Like what Raptorbricks did I added links to the youtube sources of the soungs, plus I added some links to translations for some of the songs.
“Rules: shuffle your ‘on repeat’ playlist and post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people.”
10 songs from my “on repeat” mix on shuffle:

Musicawi silt | Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex (You don't need lyrics, just listen to the guitar and saxophone).
The Wisp Sings - Winter Aid

つきをみた (tsukiwomita) - Sohta (想太) | (YT link to an ENG fansub) | (Niconico link here)

... I swear I listen to more than just non-english songs and milennial Tiktok music, the algorithm just wanted to expose me.
I might reblog this later to give a quick summery of the context of each song and some of my reccomended videos for getting into non-western music.
Now for the Ten I choose to expose their music taste are...

Zea et Xavier Charles. Vraie grande classe de part et d'autre. Je déplore de n'avoir vu étonnamment Xavier Charles que 2 fois (mais quelles fois ! Avec The Ex et Getatchew Mekuria pour la première)

Assuming The Ex didn't just abandon their politics completely, I think it's nice they were able to collaborate with Getatchew Mekuria in spite of their differences. I'm kind of tempted to say that it was punk rock of them to do so even if the idea of "being punk" is mostly empty.

Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex - Moa Anbessa - wish I’d found this ten years ago! Ethio-jazz meets punk.
Getatchew Mekuria is the most revered veteran of the Ethiopian saxophone. He is a real giant, both physically and musically. In his seventies, he is still in full voice, with his own, powerfully distinctive style of playing. The Ex invited him to play with the ICP at the 25th years Anniversary Party and the Convoy Tour. Getatchew saw The Ex and also wanted to play with them. He was so inspired that he suggested to The Ex he should record his next CD with them. He gave them 10 solo saxophone versions of Ethiopian tunes. The beginning of a very successful cooperation. released January 1, 2006 Getatchew Mekuria - Saxophone Katherina - Drums Terrie - Guitar Andy - Guitar G.W.Sok - Vocals Colin McLean - Bass Xavier Charles - Clarinet Brodie West - Alto Saxophone Joost Buis - Trombone Cor Fuhler - Organ (6,9,10)

COUCH TOUR: SHABAKA HUTCHINGS, NYC SUMMER STAGE ANYWHERE, 8 AUGUST 2020
When this show popped up on the NYT Arts page recommendations of weekend things to do in the sense that we do things during the pandemic, I organized myself for it. I’m seeing many performances but few of them in real time. But this one streamed from London at a proper jazz time there but 4-5 pm CDT. Oh and the sponsor was NYC Summer Stage Anywhere which in normal times would be putting shows on around the city; the Charles Mingus Changes Quintet I saw in Bryant Park in the mid 1970s was probably their doing.
I have admired Hutchings but haven’t been able to keep up with his energy and invention. The NYT blurb called him “a serial bandleader.” I haven’t taken a deep dive even with the nifty 2 drums/tuba!!/tenor sax Sons of Kemet which is a great idea and hypnotic but almost too intense for extended listening. This show was a one off and seemingly was meant to cover his projects eclectically, no one particular band but colleagues from several of them that could do them all.
The starting point was the Sons of Kemet drummers Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick who provided an intricate rhythmic bed but less frantically than with the tuba. Most tunes started with Hutchings starting a figure with them before Neil Charles added a double bass line. With less punch than the tuba it deescalated things. Tom Herbert played a Hohner violin shaped electric bass which looked not quite right right-handed. Dave Okumo did get one guitar solo but he mostly played Nels Cline-ish tonal washes and colors, not chord substitutions every measure. Nubaya Garcia contributed another tenor.
The show opened and closed with extended grooves, the saxes as added rhythm instruments playing variations on short figures, the unit of improvisation a measure or two rather than a chorus. It’s been a long time since I checked out Agartha era Miles Davis but maybe there’s something similar in that rhythmic stew of subtle variation. The other analogy is the Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria who I listened to once on the occasion of reading an article in the press Here Hutchings was as much band leader as a virtuoso. I prefer virtuosity but without the busy-ness of Agartha, Mekuria, or the Sons of Kemet, I could see what he was up to.
The middle two tunes featured Hutchings on clarinet (over a recitation of a properly angry poem, it sounded Klezmer-ish) and stretched out more and opened up for nicely lyrical playing, including from Garcia. Undoubtedly that was representative of one of his “serial” bands and so when I find that I will have found my go to Hutchings.
No matter what the context, he is exciting, bursting with ideas, and charismatic. I’m glad to have this chance to have this sampler of his work.
