The article, "The German U-Boat Menace of World War II" by Peter Suciu, explores the significant impact and historical evolution of German U-boats during both World Wars. It highlights Chicago's Griffin Museum of Science and Industry as one of few places showcasing a German U-boat, the U-505, which underscores the technological advancements and strategic importance of these submarines. The article discusses the development of the German U-boat fleet despite restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, detailing the evolution of various types including Type II, Type VII, and the long-range Type IX, which could reach American waters. The piece mentions strategic warfare concepts like the "Tonnageschlacht" and how the U-boats initially enjoyed success during the "happy times" of the early war years. However, the increased Allied countermeasures, including convoys and sophisticated detection technology, eventually curtailed the effectiveness of the U-boat campaigns. Notably, the U-505's capture was so significant that it was hidden from German knowledge until after the war, and its preservation offers a rare glimpse into this fascinating aspect of naval warfare.

Episode 66: UB-65, the Damned German Submarine of WWI Photodump
Image 01: 1918. German sailors aboard German Type III U-Boat UB-65. The crew aboard the UB-65 were plagued by bad luck, apparitions, and supernatural forces. Image 02: The UB-65 at port in Belgium. The vessel was known to be haunted throughout German military circles and was considered cursed. Image 03: Crew sleeping quarters & Crew Room on a German Type III U-Boat. Note the tiny bunks (left). Image 04: Crew lockers. All of your belongings would fit into one of these compartments. Image 05: MANHOLE LEADING TO THE PERISCOPE. Look how small it is! Image 06: After multiple incidents of crew asking to be relocated due to hauntings, Admiral Ludwig von Schroder personally investigated the UB-65 case. After interviewing each sailor about their experienced aboard the UB-65, the entire crew was relocated. Image 07-09: Examples of St. Elmo’s Fire. Sailors claimed they saw something similar to this natural phenomenon inside the submarine during battle. Image 10: The UB-65’s final resting place. Although this wreck site has been confirmed to be the UB-65, the wreck is considered a war grave and not to be entered.

#OTD in 1939 – The horror of a war declared just days previously comes to Galway. German U-boat 30 torpedoed the SS Athenia 250 miles north-west of the Donegal coast resulting in the deaths of 112 of over 1,400 passengers and crew.
The Athenia was bound for Quebec carrying civilians fleeing the situation in Europe. It was the first ship to be sunk in the war. Survivors were picked up by the Norwegian freighter Knute Nelson and brought to Galway. Under the command of Captain James Cook, the SS Athenia had begun her voyage in Glasgow on 1 September, picking up passengers at Liverpool and Belfast before heading out into the…

The Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 Bachstelze (Wagtail) was a type of rotary-wing kite, known as a rotor kite. They were towed behind U-boats to allow a lookout to see further. They were stored in a cannister and assembled by the crew, then broken down again after the flight. About 200 were built by Weser Flugzeugbau. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles Of The Reich

U-Boat 110, Electric Control Room by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Via Flickr: This photograph shows the U-Boat 110, a German Submarine that was sunk and risen in 1918. This photograph shows the Submarine's Electric Control Room, including its switch gear. Reference: DS.SWH/5/3/2/14/1/58 This image is taken from an album of photographs found in the Swan Hunter shipbuilders collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. The album is from 1918 and documents the U.B. 110 before she was scrapped on the dry docks of Swan Hunter Wigham Richardson Ltd, Wallsend. The twin-screw German submarine U.B. 110 was built by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg. On the 19th July 1918, when attacking a convoy of merchant ships near Hartlepool, she herself was attacked by H.M. Motor-Launch No. 263 and suffered from depth charges. Coming to the surface she was rammed by H.M.S. Garry, a torpedo boat destroyer, and sunk. In September she was salvaged and placed in the admiralty dock off Jarrow slake. She was then berthed at Swan Hunter's dry docks department with an order to restore her as a fighting unit. The Armistice on 11th November 1918 caused work on her to be stopped. She was towed on the 19th December 1918 from Wallsend to the Northumberland Dock at Howdon and was subsequently sold as scrap. The album of photographs, taken by Frank & Sons of South Shields, documents the U.B. 110 in extensive detail. The photographs provide a rare glimpse into the mechanics and atmosphere of the raised German submarine. More images of the U-Boat 110 can be viewed here.
