This modified stainless steel could kill bacteria without antibiotics or chemicals
An electrochemical process developed at Georgia Tech could offer new protection against bacterial infections without contributing to growing antibiotic resistance. The approach capitalizes on the natural antibacterial properties of copper and creates incredibly small needle-like structures on the surface of stainless steel to kill harmful bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus. It's convenient and inexpensive, and it could reduce the need for chemicals and antibiotics in hospitals, kitchens, and other settings where surface contamination can lead to serious illness. It also could save lives: A global study of drug-resistant infections found they directly killed 1.27 million people in 2019 and contributed to nearly 5 million other deaths—making these infections one of the leading causes of death for every age group. Researchers described the copper-stainless steel and its effectiveness May 20 in the journal Small.

YEE HAW.
Yes, I know it's Georgia Tech but come on. This shit's hilarious and you do wonder what Goggles would think seeing his name floating in gold in the middle of the night.

RSVPing for my college commencement and the page for getting tickets for a wheelchair-user contained one of the funniest things I've ever read:
Tumblr media
Great joke GT, now please take me to the page where I can jump through several hoops to maybe be allowed to have my sister and grandfather sit in a completely different area from the rest of my family to watch me graduate from a school where I have taken photographic evidence of multiple wheelchair ramps that can't be reached without taking a flight of stairs.
"Accessibility is a top priority at Georgia Tech." HA, and they say engineers have no sense of humor

AI accelerates discovery of next-gen polymers
Nylon, Teflon, Kevlar. These are just a few familiar polymers—large-molecule chemical compounds—that have changed the world. From Teflon-coated frying pans to 3D printing, polymers are vital to creating the systems that make the world function better. Finding the next groundbreaking polymer is always a challenge, but now Georgia Tech researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to shape and transform the future of the field. Rampi Ramprasad's group develops and adapts AI algorithms to accelerate materials discovery. This summer, two papers published in the Nature family of journals highlight the significant advancements and success stories emerging from years of AI-driven polymer informatics research.
