What is Edwin Payne reading? : a closer look.
From the flashback scene in the show, we get this very short shot of Edwin walking down the halls. Now, what he is reading tells you all about the Dead Boy Detectives’ love for detective and adventure stories. He is carrying a penny novel! (also known as dime novel in the US- and the names are due to their cheap prices of, you guessed it! One penny or one dime each) Precisely no. 87 of the “Aldine Tip-Top Tales”.
But, what were the Aldine Tip-Top Tales you might ask yourself. Well, originally the name was:
Tip Top Detective Tales and it was one of the Aldine Publishing Company's many library series produced to capture the fancy of the youth of Great Britain. This particular one ran from 1910 through 1912 when it morphed into just Tip Top Tales, produced to include stories of adventure, as well as those of criminal content. With one exception, all of the novels included in the series were published anonymously. (The exception: Glittering Gold! by Emile Gaboriau -Tip Top Detective Tales #4).
The Aldine Publishing Company was founded by Charles Perry Brown (1834-1916).
Some other titles included:
But, we see Edwin reading something else:
Which happens to be The Strand Magazine! And this very one for this shot.
The Strand Magazine was a British monthly magazine published from january 1891 to march 1950 (711 issues) in its original version (a new version of the magazine has been edited from 1998). George Newnes Ltd. was the publisher of the magazine and it was edited by Herbert Greenhough Smith from 1891 to 1930, then by Douglas Edward Macdonald Hastings.
Arthur Conan Doyle was a huge contributor with novels, short stories, poems and articles.
The Strand Magazine was also published in the United States from february 1891 through february 1916 but with sometimes different content.
Between 1891 and 1930, The Strand Magazine published no less than
• 121 short stories
• 70 articles
• 9 novels
• 2 interviews and 1 poem written by Arthur Conan Doyle.
And just in case you did not know who Arthur Conan Doyle was, well, let me just leave some of his works here as well, originally published in the Strand:
And these are just two of the infinite variety of novels Edwin Payne owns. :)

The Adventure of the Final Problem: Sidney Paget Illustrations
In the last two letters from our friend Watson we are informed of the dead of the world's first consulting detective after a duel against (former) professor Moriarty. When this story was published in 1893 in The Strand Magazine in the United Kingdom, and McClure's in the United States. Sidney Paget was the artist behind these images in Strand and Harry C. Edwards in McClure's.
Sidney Edward Paget (4 october 1860 - 28 january 1908) was a British illustrator famous for his illustrations of the Sherlock Holmes stories in The Strand.
He had two brothers who were also illustrators (and who also illustrated some Conan Doyle's works) : Walter Paget and Henry M. Paget. As a consequence, in 1891, when the Strand editor, George Newnes, asked art director W. H. Boot to find an illustrator for the Sherlock Holmes stories, the latter sent an offer to Walter Paget but the letter arrived to Sidney Paget.
Between 1891 and 1904, he did 594 illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle's works.
The most famous portrait of Professor Moriarty
I really love all the details here
The Italian priest that barely speaks English
The falls looks beautiful <3
The final moment. I think that Moriarty was so desesperate to choose a physical fight against someone who does baritsu. If Watson was there this would have ended with a bullet, I guess.

It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but that you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it.

Wait "The Strand" backed an official Sherlock Holmes fan fic contest?
Sort of! George Newnes (founder of the strand) also ran a paper called Tit-Bits which was not a full magazine but instead ran short single-column light reading, and at some point during the hiatus they ran a contest to publish a short fan-written holmes story. allegedly.
(from the 'Cambridge Companion to Sherlock Holmes' introduction)
theres only a few issues of tit-bits accessible online at all as far as i can find and those are through newspapers.com (payed subscription) so i havent had a chance to dig into it any further than the one or two little mentions it got in the cambridge holmes companion 😔 but im obsessed with it and if i ever find out more i will absolutely make a little post abt it
#i think it also gets mentioned in one of the actual essays but i didnt bookmark that apparently#i dont doubt that this happened i just havent been able to find any more info on it#but i am obsessed with it and i would love to find the winning story#that feels like something ppl who know more than me must have archived somewhere but fuck if i can find out where#a#acd holmes

Since there’s no help, come let us kiss and part. Nay, I have done, you get no more of me; And I am glad, yea glad with all my heart, That thus so cleanly I myself can free. Shake hands for ever, cancel all our vows, And when we meet at any time again, Be it not seen in either of our brows That we one jot of former love retain. Now at the last gasp of Love’s latest breath, When, his pulse failing, Passion speechless lies; When Faith is kneeling by his bed of death, And Innocence is closing up his eyes— Now, if thou wouldst, when all have given him over, From death to life thou might’st him yet recover!
MICHAEL DRAYTON (1563-1631) Versión española: Roger Wolfe

The first editions of The Adventures & Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes. Published in 1892 & 1893 by George Newnes Ltd London. These stories were first published in the Strand Magazine around 1891-1893. This edition does not contain the second chapter of the Memoirs The Adventure Of The Cardboard Box because the plot contained graphic descriptions of murder and an illicit love affair. The second chapter appeared in the Strand Magazine January 1893 and the first American edition but the story was removed months later. The story wasn’t published until 1917 in the first edition of His Last Bow. This is my favorite book of all time since it contains the iconic chapters with Irene Adler, Professor Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes. The books also have a great storyline.

SALOME | A TRAGEDY IN ONE ACTTRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH OF OSCAR WILDEFIRST ENGLISH EDITION, one of 500 copies[Author’s collection] —EARLY PRESS TRANSLATIONS OF OSCAR WILDE’S SALOMÉ— Wilde’s play Salomé was published in the 1890s in two languages, and the bane of each was a lordly limitation. First was the original work that Wilde wrote in French—albeit with a little help from his friends.…
