with fancy hair like that, who wouldn't want to vote for the Spinifex pigeon? not so fast because the Squatter pigeon is stunning as well!

ONE OF THE MANY ENDEMIC AUSTRALIAN 

BIRDS: SQUATTER PIGEON

The Squatter Pigeon, Geophaps scripta is only found in Australia.  Its range is Queensland and NC New South Wales.

During our trip to Queensland (Jul-Aug 2019) we encountered this species twice.  First time around a waterhole (”dam” in Aussie) called “Dave’s Dam”, Curraghmore Station on the Karma Waters road (top picture).

The second time was at Granite Gorge Nature Park in the Tablelands area. In this place we have better views of this elegant looking pigeon.

Two subspecies are found in Australia.  Easy to ID both of them by the color of the skin around the eyes.  The nominate race, scripta has blue colored skin around the eyes.  The race peninsulae has red skin around the eyes.

Yes, you have guessed correct, we only saw G. s. peninsulae in both occasions.
