Jeju Island, South Korea
Jeju (sometimes known as Samdado) is a small volcanic island off the southwest coast of South Korea. In 2007 it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of it's geology. The island was formed 2 million years ago and is still considered active.
Mt. Halla (Hallasan) is one of the only large shield volcanoes to form over a stationary continental plate hot spot. While the mountain has the typical shield volcano morphology, is actually a shelfal shield volcano that initially formed from shallow water, phreatomagmatic eruptions. These are explosive due to the direct mixing of lava with water. As the volcano built up above sea level, the eruptions became effusive and formed the shield volcano we know today. The first image shows the sun setting over Mt. Halla.
The Geomunoreum Lava Tubes are considered to be some of the most spectacular anywhere and is home to the world's longest lava tube. The tubes feature a diverse and abundant collection of secondary carbonate speleothems, the likes of which are not found anywhere else. The second image shows some of these carbonate formations.
Seongsang Ulchulbong (sometimes called Ilchulbong) peak is considered to be an important site as it showcases the stratigraphy of Surtseyan-type volcanoes which form during phreatomagmatic eruptions in shallow waters (including interaction with continental aquifers). They are essentially the marine (generally speaking) counterpart to Strombolian-type volcanoes and are characterised by layers of very fine-grained ash, lapilli and bombs. The third image shows a profile view of Seongsan Ulchulbong, while the fourth is a closer view of the fine ash layers as seen elsewhere on the island.

Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, South Korea
Tumblr media
Our last destination for today and my favorite place on this list. Now it is time to spend some time in the Natural wonders of South Korea.
Yes, you are right. I am talking about Jeju Island.
You probably heard about Jeju Island for its beauty, but did you know there are much more than you think about.
Jeju Island is one of the most commanding destinations in Korea. If you really want to experience Jeju Island then fall for me.
More than a million years ago, a volcanic eruption led to the diverse and beautiful landscapes that eventually make up Jeju Island.
Jeju Island is beloved for its unique topography. Jeju Island offers a natural monument of UNESCO for three great ecological marvels.
The first of the three ecological marvels is the Geomunoreum Lava Tube system with its intricate ceilings and cave walls, perfect for cave lovers. Second is the Seongsan Ilchulbong peak with its dramatic volcanic crater jutting out of the sea, which is a great place for hikers and third is Hallasan Natural Reserve where you will find the postcard-worthy sight of Hallasan Mountain, an amazing place for photographers. It is the highest mountain in South Korea.
Apart from the cave formation and sea cliffs, there are other breathtaking natural attractions that Jeju Island has to offer such as Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, Hallim Park, Spirited Garden, Bijarim Forest, and Hyeopjae Beach, to name a few.
Although this is a famous place in South Korea, still a lot of people miss this place because it is quite far from the main cities. But, I wish if you ever visit South Korea, definitely do visit Jeju island.

"ALL ABOUT SOUTH KOREA"
"South Korea"
Tumblr media
South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. It’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal fishing villages, sub-tropical islands and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital.
There are lots of tourists spots in South Korea.
"Seoul"
Tumblr media
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a huge metropolis where modern skyscrapers, high-tech subways and pop culture meet Buddhist temples, palaces and street markets. Notable attractions include futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a convention hall with curving architecture and a rooftop park; Gyeongbokgung Palace, which once had more than 7,000 rooms; and Jogyesa Temple, site of ancient locust and pine trees.
"Namsan Tower"
Tumblr media
The N Seoul Tower, officially the YTN Seoul Tower and commonly known as Namsan Tower or Seoul Tower, is a communication and observation tower located on Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, South Korea. The 236-meter-tall tower marks the second highest point in Seoul.
"Nami Island"
Tumblr media
Namiseom or Nami Island is a half-moon shaped island located in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, South Korea, formed as the land around it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River as the result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944.
"Jeju Island"
Tumblr media
Jeju province encompasses the South Korean island of Jeju in the Korea Strait. It's known for its beach resorts and volcanic landscape of craters and cavelike lava tubes. Hallasan Mountain, a dormant volcano, features hiking trails, a crater lake at the 1,950m summit and nearby Gwaneumsa Temple. The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System includes 7km-long Manjanggul Cave, created centuries ago when Hallasan was still active.

Want to travel through time and space? Then take a peek into the underground world of 만장굴 (Manjanggul Cave) will give you a cosmic experience.
Tumblr media
The Manjanggul lava tubes are located in 덕천리 (Gimnyeong-ri), 구좌읍 (Gujwaeup), 제주시(Jeju City). Created by Geomunoreum volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, lava flowed and melted away the rock, forming the deep abyss-like cave that became a beloved Korean monument.
As the first cave built to be a natural monument, 만장굴 is about 23 miles in breadth and 30 miles in height, having a grand total of 13,422 meter in length. The inside of the tunnel sustains a temperature of 1℃ 1 to 21℃, sustaining a comfortable atmosphere. There are also have living animals such as bats, which makes travelers have a magical feeling, and it is also valuable for researchers.
Tumblr media
There are three entrances into 만장굴 , and they can be categorized by public favoritism:
Tumblr media
Entrance #2 [above] is the one most open to the public and most commonly used, however #3 is the one with the most active cave life.
Between entrances #1 and #2, there is a lower level main tube where most 만장굴 wildlife can be found.
Tumblr media
Based in Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, the Manjanggul Lava Tube has the greatest number of living creatures, such as the Jeju cave-spider and bent-wing bats. This anomaly has created the largest colony of bats confirmed to be living in Korea so far, finalizing at a total of over 30,000.
Tumblr media
Stone Turtle [above] is one of the most fantastic rock formations in 만장굴 and also one of the largest known lava columns in the world. It stretches at 24 ft. tall and is shaped like a turtle, while others have claimed it is shaped like Jeju Island.
To get here, you must take a 30 minute bus ride from Jeju City and tickets are 2,000 won (adults). Minors are 1,000 won, but seniors over the age of 65 and children under 7 have free admission (with proof of identification). Groups are considered 10 or more people, and group tickets are 1,600 (adults) and 800 won for children. The disabled (and one companion) are also free of charge.
Pack a small backpack and comfortable shoes, as to walk through all of the cave is a total of 40-50 minutes. Water often drips from the ceiling and it is chilly inside 만장굴, so bringing a jacket is advised. Restrooms are available on-site, but it is recommended to go before leaving for the cave.
만장굴 closes the first Wednesday of every month, and its operating hours are from 9 AM to 6PM (last admission is 5:10 PM).
Tumblr media
Natural landscape can appeal to the finer feelings of mankind and relaxes the stressed soul and mind, making 만장굴 one of the most fantastic travel areas in Korea.
Travel far,
-mod yue & mod mono
