#Genshin Wind Wisps

Oh look, What I have so far for my Cataclysm and pre-canon Mondstadt plot points for my ATWIAWL AU!

CATACLYSM

After defeating Durin, Celestia summons Barbatos to assassinate the Khaenri’an heir, to which Barbatos very reluctantly cooperates with, that is until they get there and discover a baby Kaeya.

Seeing his smile, Barbatos cannot bring themself to kill the baby and attempts to smuggle him away from the Cataclysm, but they are discovered by Morax and the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles.

Before all of this, Dainsleif was exiled (for reasons I haven’t really decided yet) from Khaenri’ah but came back during the Cataclysm hoping to save the people, but bumps into Barbatos. Dainsleif is tense at first until Barbatos hands Kaeya over to him and tells him that he must run before the Sustainer arrives.

The Sustainer then proceeds to arrive and Barbatos buys the two time as Dainsleif and Kaeya flee into the Abyss. However, Barbatos quickly loses the fight.

An offence like this would normally lead to the offender’s execution, however, the Sustainer is unable to kill Barbatos without severe consequences (all relating to Istaroth), but leaving them to their own devices is just as equally dangerous, so instead, the Heavenly Principles seal them away.

She still tells all the other archons that they killed Barbatos to dissuade them from also rebelling.

Before they’re able to seal them away, however, Barbatos transfers their powers over to the Thousand Winds, blessing them with power rivalling that of Liyue’s adepti so that after the deed is done and the Sustainer sets out to attack Mondstadt, the Wind Wisps are able to fight her off, sending her into a deep slumber after the Cataclysm weakened her.

PRE-CANON MONDSTADT

After they were blessed by Barbatos, the Wind Wisps essentially became divine protectors of Mondstadt, similar to the Four Winds and Liyue’s adepti. They’re also able to have human forms, identifiable by their white hair and anemo-coloured tips and eyes. They mostly stay in Mondstadt but are also known to live in other nations alongside people they decide to stick to.

Before they were sealed away, Barbatos was able to remove their soul and put it into the form of a Wind Wisp not too dissimilar from the rest of the Thousand Winds. Since their identity as Venti was compromised, Barbatos decided to craft a new identity under the name of Nye and use it to secretly remain in Teyvat.

The fact that Barbatos disguised as Nye is still around is a secret only the Thousand Winds are privy to, because if Celestia were to ever hear of Nye’s true identity, they could potentially awaken prematurely, and that is the last thing anyone wants.

Because they’re around, Venti is able to heal Dvalin of Durin’s poison, but because I’m also a sucker for the gay dragons, close to the present events of the game, Durin gets reincarnated into the most reckless being in all of Teyvat. Initially, Dvalin lets him be out of a sense of guilt from killing his past self, but then Durin (whose name might not be Durin anymore) gets himself in a sticky situation and Dvalin has to appear in his human form in order to get him out of that situation. Afterwards, Dvalin decides to stick around with Durin to ensure that he doesn’t get himself almost killed again.

In his human form, Dvalin has a fake anemo vision and I can imagine him either being a bow user or a catalyst user.

I like to think that Durin would have a cryo vision. I can imagine his weapon either being a claymore or a physical catalyst like Heizou or Wriothesley.

During the Ursa the Drake crisis, the presence of the wisps are able to save Crepus’ life. I haven’t decided yet if present-day Diluc still has the same personality he had before his father died in canon, or if he’s still grumpy. Another fic that inspired me was “A Bard’s Ambition” by OG_CaleHenituse where even though Venti saved Crepus’ life, it wasn’t without people thinking he had died when he went missing which still results in Diluc’s fallout with the knights.

Illness was not an issue he ever had to reckon with as a wind wisp. He envied his siblings in that regard. The Thousand Winds were unable to related to his sickness, so they tried to comfort him in their own ways. Some of them stayed with Venti, while others scoured the continent in search of a solution. They snuck into the Akademiya’s libraries, swept through Cloud Retainer’s blueprints, and even searched the remains of the Fontaine Research Institute for a cure to a divine cold. He had gotten sick plenty of times before, but each time, some wind wisps searched Teyvat. They hoped that, in the centuries since the last time he was sick, someone had come up with something that could help him recover faster. 

Meanwhile, Venti was sorely rethinking his decision to live outside. Normally, he loved the outdoors! He loved laying on a high branch at Windrise, feeling the way the breeze shakes the trees, and occasionally feel the cool rain on his skin. Now though, his whole body ached, and the roots of Vennessa’s Tree simply felt uncomfortable. 

While his old friend’s Tree was normally his go-to healing spot, that was more for magic issues, such as alchemical corruption or losing some of his power. Against a regular (divine) cold, the Tree was unfortunately unable to help. 

Venti didn’t want to risk infecting Dvalin, and Andrius was never too comforting. He would love to rest in the hands of his (friend’s) statue, but his stronger-than-a-human’s sneezes would attract unwanted scrutiny, and likely bother the people in the plaza. And then the Sisters would notice, and insist on trying to heal him or having him rest in the cathedral’s recovery wing. And then he’d be stuck listening to choir songs singing praises he didn’t deserve, while all the sisters prayed to himself so he could get better!

So, he stayed at the roots of Vennessa’s Tree, trying to make himself comfortable, while several wind wisps tried to comfort him. He closed his eyes, and tried once again to relax. 

“Oh! Apologies, I wasn’t expecting you to be out here.”

He slowly opened his eyes and looked in the direction of the voice, where Grandmaster Jean was standing. She looked concerned. 

“Grandmaster Jean!” He mouths the word ‘acting’ as she goes to correct him, “What a pleasant surprise! What brings you to Windri-Achoo!” Venti groaned.

“I often visit Lady Vennessa’s Tree to clear my head. Are you alright?”

He winced at the thought that he was adding more stress to her plate, “Of Course, Grandmaster Jean!” He wished his voice didn’t sound as hoarse.

Jean looked conflicted, then took a few steps towards Venti and sat down next to him, “I hope I’m not being too presumptuous, but… I wasn’t aware Archons could get sick.”

Venti sneezed again, then looked at Jean, “Oh, it’s just something I have to deal with every few centuries. Alas, even gods are not immune to colds,” He sighed dramatically, “Perhaps this is my punishment for stealing Master Diluc’s wine…”

She looked at his lap, where several wind wisps were currently resting, “Then are the… wind spirits also sick?”

He followed her gaze to the sleeping wind wisps, “Ah, no, they’re just trying to make me - Achoo! - feel better.” 

“Is that why you’re spending more time at the Tree? You mentioned before that it helps you heal.”

“Alas, Valiant Vennessa’s tree only helps heal ailments of the magical kind. Such a mundane problem cannot be healed from a magical source.”

She looked down at her own lap, “I know it’s not my place to question your judgment…”

He placed a hand over his heart and closed his eyes, “Grandmaster Jean, you wound me! I can take any criticism you have to throw at me!” He let his hands fall to his sides, opened his eyes and looked at Jean, “I value your opinion, really! Whatever it is you have to say, please don’t let my status as an archon keep you from sharing!��

“If Lady Vennessa’s Tree can’t heal your cold, then why are you still sitting outside? Fresh air and exercise is imperative to a quick recovery, but so is proper rest. I can’t imagine it’s easy to make the trip to Windrise every day. Surely there’s a park closer to your house.”

“Oh, I don’t actually have a house in the city! I usually just sleep outside.” 

She looked horrified, “Lord Barbatos-”

He quickly interrupted, “It’s fine, really! I love the outdoors!” His smile didn’t seem to convince her. 

“I cannot in good conscience allow a citizen of Mondstadt, archon or otherwise, to remain outside while they are recovering from an illness. I can offer you my house’s spare bedroom.”

“That’s really not -Achoo! - necessary, Grandmaster Jean. Really, this just happens sometimes. I’ll be fine in a few days… ah… ah… Achoo!” 

“I insist, Lo- Venti. We don’t want whatever you have to get worse. And I’m sure you wouldn’t want myself, your other friends, and all your… wind spirits to worry you aren’t taking care of yourself.”

He gasped, “I can’t believe you Grandmaster Jean! Using my compassion against me,” he draped his hand over his forehead, “Oh, woe is me if- Achoo!... Ah… Ah… Achoo!” He dropped his hands back to his sides, “... I’ll go, if only to give you peace of mind. You may have a point about proper rest.”

She smiled, “I’m glad to hear it,” she held a hand out to help him up. As he stood up, several wind wisps roused from their sleep and floated up beside his head. 

“There’s plenty of room for the wind spirits too.”

He took her hand, and smiled earnestly, “Thank you, Grandmaster Jean.”

An hour later, he was laying on her spare bed, which he had to admit was much comfier than a tree. He was still sneezing every few minutes, but he was as relaxed as he could be in present conditions. Several of the Thousand Winds floated next to him. 4 were trying to sing to him, 3 were nuzzling against him to provide comfort, and others were playing with his hair. 

One of his braids was dangling over the edge of the bed, and 2 wind wisps were quite entertained by watching it sway in the small breezes they created. The other braid had come undone entirely, and 3 wind wisps were trying to rebraid it for him. 

Each time he sneezed, they lost their grip, the half-done braid fell apart, and they had to start over again. It would be a few sneezes before they learn to braid his hair quick enough. They don’t seem to mind having to start over. In fact, they seem to really enjoy constantly braiding his hair. Venti suspects that if his sneezing didn’t regularly undo their progress, they would’ve redone the braid several times by now.

Venti doesn’t want to think about the chaos the other 988 winds were out causing. Instead, he thinks about how nice Jean was to give him the bed even though he probably caused more work for her. He would have to repay her somehow once he got better. 

For now, though, he was content to doze off, safe in his old friend’s house.

Barbatos and decarabian would have constantly been bickering if they both managed to physically and mentally survive the archon war (sibling rivalry) and having to constantly ask the other wind wisps for who is correct in their debates

okay so while I don't think it would be canon, I do think Deca being an 'older brother' at most to the wisps is super funny. Deca is like "i remember when you kept tripping on your cape ergo your arguments are invalid" towards Venti

You know those posts of people who dated someone but their family actually likes that person even more than their family member? Yeah that's Amos with the wind wisps. Move over Deca we want her to have your title.

[ATWIAWL] Wisp name meaning - Part 1

Nye (Venti's secret identity)

The site I read said it meant "New Start"

This represents how this new identity is essentially a new start for Venti.

My bro and friend both chose Nye out of the long list of names I gave them because it reminded them of Bill Nye the Science Guy X))

Zhen (Zhongli's wisp)

The site I read said it meant "A Treasure" or "Precious"

This is a callback to how Zhen would leave Zhongli gifts before the two got close.

Sometimes, Zhen is affectionately nicknamed "Xiao Zhen", which means "Little Zhen" :))

Kaze no Seirei (Kabukimono's wisp)

Literally just translates to "Wind Spirit"

If the people of Tatarasuna named Kabukimono "Wandering Eccentric", the chances of them giving Kaze an actual name are severely slim.

When they still lived with Ei, Ei just called them Barbatos since she believed that Kaze was his ghost.

Ghostie (Nahida's wisp)

Nahida gave them that name because they looked like a little ghost in their wisp form :))

I might have mentioned this before, but Nahida originally gave me the vibes of someone who'd give proper names, until I remembered that she signed Wanderer up into the championship under the name "Hat Guy"

The name works especially well with the lore I have for Ghostie XDD

Duchesse Imène (Furina's wisp)

The site I read said it meant "She who has faith" or "Believer"

It's meant to reference how although they have no idea what's going on, they decided to support Furina no matter what.

I wanted Imène to have a full title that would match the Salon Solitaire but couldn't figure out what role they would have to Furina in the eyes of the Fontaine people. My pals and I were thinking of some kind of general, or a bodyguard, or an informant or something, and then we had the brilliant idea of making Imène some kind of advisor, like, a king's advisor, but because they don't have official titles, we just went with Duchess in French (Which is literally just Duchess with an 'e' at the end lol)

The Velikaia Knazhna of Snezhnaya, Karine (The Tsarista's wisp)

The site I read said it meant "Beloved Friend"

It is meant to represent how Karine is now the Tsaritsa's closest companion, and essentially her new younger sibling after Venti "died".

The title "Velikaia Knazhna" means "Grand Princess", but translates to "Grand Duchess" in English. It is a title given to the daughters and male-line granddaughters of the Emperor or Empress' of Russia... huh... I don't know why, but before I reread the site I got the info from, I originally thought it was the title given to the younger sibling of a Russian ruler... which... would probably just make them a Prince/Princess huh?

Should I change Karine's title to Knazhna' Krovi Imperatorskoy? It means "Princess of the Blood Imperial" and was a title that was implemented in Russia in the year 1885 to reduce the amount of Grand Princes and Grand Princess by giving the male-line descendants of the Emperor of Russia a title that would distinguish them from those of noble Russian families titled prince/princess.

Why does Karine present as more feminine and bear feminine titles? It's for the Tsaritsa's peace of mind, trust me.

Something something thoughts about my hc that Venti was overworked before he was carefree. Him wanting to do good by mond & the friends he lost, struggling to help rebuild it while also dealing with grief and suddenly being thrust into godhood and a new form all at once

Unlike most of the gods we know about Venti didn't start off as a deity and had to just. Cope?? He was just a little wind sprite man he was just a lil guy that lost two of his friends ;-; Not to mention the red haired warrior walking out on them after he just ascended

I also hc that he had to learn to deal with human emotions too so everything felt so much worse and more overwhelming because he wasn't used to it. So fueled by guilt and grief he tries so incredibly hard to carry on his friends' legacy and create a mond they'd be proud of. He was so tired and not at all processing his emotions properly.

WISP CARE FAQ!

Q: Where should I keep my wisp?

A: first of all DONT! wisps are creatures of the Wind and hate being kept in enclosures. instead you should let your wisp make a Nest in your home and return to it when they feel like it. otherwise they may enter what we in the business call Big Anger

Q: How to know if my wisp is Angry?

A: the first sign of Anger is a sharp whistle coming from the wisp. this behaviour is called Screaming and is a common sign of distress. other wisps will be attracted by the Scream and will make your life living nightmare.

the second sign of Anger is your house becoming a mess. this means your wisp may be Revolting by making tornados when you're not around. if your wisp reaches this stage you have to immediately stop whatever you're doing Or Else

the third sign of Anger is what we call Or Else, where the wisp will rally more wisps against you and Flatten Your House With A Hurricane. if your wisp reaches this stage you should just give up

Q: How do I deal with my wisp's Anger?

A: stop upsetting them. hope this helps

Q: Do wisps need food to survive?

A: contrary to popular belief wisps don't need to consume food! they get all the nutrients they need from the ley lines. that said, they enjoy certain fruits and flowers, and some foods rich in elemental energy can make them stronger. for more information, check out our Top 10 Foods For Wisps

Q: How can my wisp grow stronger?

A: they can grow stronger from elemental energy or from people's prayers! it is rumored that the anemo god used to be a wind wisp but the guy who told me that was very very drunk so idk

Q: HELP! My wisp started talking out of nowhere!

A: don't worry this is normal. it means your wisp has grown strong enough to be capable of speech. they will get the handle of it eventually.

Q: Do wisps hibernate?

A: yes, but not in the traditional sense. when they go through a stressful experience they may go to sleep for long amounts of time, but don't worry, this is healthy behaviour from them. another reason may be that they are processing a strong increase in elemental power, and will wake up once their body has fully adapted.

Q: A wisp has been following me & I am afraid it wants to kill me.

A: do not fret, wisps are peaceful creatures and will not attack unless provoked. wisps are commonly attracted to music, which is why they are often seen dancing with bards. alternatively, you may smell of and/or be carrying flowers that the wisp wants to eat.
