“Whoever may stumble upon the memory in this sword must be of sincere heart and mind to have unlocked it.

By the time you see and hear this memory, I will be long gone from this world, and my dear Barbatos shall be Mondstadt’s guardian in my stead. I place all my hopes and dreams into my successor, for he will lead the world and bring you one step closer to complete freedom from the gods.

With my final blessing that shall be bestowed upon him once this memory is unlocked, I leave the memories of a bygone era. You too shall witness them…”

BACKGROUND.

Not much is to be shared about the widely renowned god of memories. Although the people of Mondstadt have long forgotten her story and her connection with their present deity, one bard seeks to sing ballads of her gentle rule even thousands of years after her passing.

Born of the High Heavens, the one who named herself Catalina sought to find companionship and make memories with others. She descended upon the mortal realm, carrying nothing but a divine silver flute that dispelled the worries in humans and lulled the world into peace.

Her curiosity of humans exceeded the usual limits of a god, and soon she began to find the meaning of what made them so special. She peered into their lives from afar, saw all of the different kinds of memories that they made, and sought to dig deeper still.

This desire granted her the ability to peer into others’ memories and sort through them freely. Thus, the title of the god of memories had been born.

She erected a glorious kingdom, with memories, truth, and honesty acting as the foundations. Word of her kindness and generosity spread throughout the Seven Lands, and more people gathered inside the city’s walls to receive her protection.

The god of the West who looked on at her kingdom from his high tower saw her growing territory as a threat, and declared war. The Wolf King, the infamous King of the North Wind, proposed a truce between him and the god of memories. She accepted, as they both had a common enemy.

The first time she set her sights on the brilliant flame of a phoenix was meeting a warrior god from the volcanic region of Natlan. The god received a letter from the Queen, asking to be their ally.

They refused immediately, not looking for any allies in that war. They would fight alone. The Queen yet persisted, hellbent on digging through the phoenix’s memories to understand what made them tick. The phoenix, whose wrath knew no bounds, decided to decline the Queen’s invite personally.

They descended upon the Eastern side of Mondstadt in a flurry of magnificent flames and an overpowering aura. However, in the presence of the Queen, they all but dropped to their knees, powerless before the sight of an angel before their eyes.

The Queen was no better, her calm and gentle composure fading away as soon as the sight of that dazzling phoenix appeared before her eyes. Her heart had lurched as she locked eyes with the most bewitching person she had ever seen in her life.

The phoenix became Icarus on that day— chasing after the sun that would soon be their lover. They were inseparable. The phoenix pledged loyalty to the Queen and became her right hand— her protector.

The peace of Eastern Mondstadt had to end eventually, as the god of storms invaded the gentle kingdom and fought off against the god of memories. She called upon her four trusted elite soldiers— The Four Archangels, and began to devise a plan to take down the tyrant that dared to threaten the peace of her kingdom.

The loyal phoenix returned to Mondstadt, ready to stand alongside their lover in this fight. Ultimately, they were told to stay out of it. This was not their fight to partake in. But they had to, and they swore to protect the Queen with their life.

As the fall of one of Mondstadt’s god kings finally came, the other god king was able to breathe a sigh of relief. All the people of Mondstadt were free once more. Upon seeing her dear friend ascend to the Heavens and become a god worthy of recognition, she knew it was time to pass the torch to someone more worthy of a gnosis than she.

Holding his hands tightly in her own, she promised that one day there would be freedom for all. That Teyvat would one day be brought into a new world order, and the destruction of the Divine Thrones would come at last— and Barbatos would be someone who took part in making that happen.

In the end, she gave up her physical body to allow him to receive the title of Anemo Archon. In the following years, he would cherish the only thing she left behind with his very life: her winged sword that stored all of her memories.

He would carry her ideals with him, and turn Mondstadt into the very nation both his bard friend and his dear halovian soulmate sought to build.

FUN FACTS.

• catalina has close ties with istaroth. they met once, very briefly. catalina attempted to offer up some of her memories as a gift for the god, but istaroth refused. the god of time instead gifted her something— a holy sword infused with pure anemo.

• the sword that catalina left behind and stored all her memories into is the same one that was gifted to her by istaroth.

• catalina is referred to as “the queen of the north wind” bc she was close allies with andrius during the archon war. this title was given to her by her people bc they firmly believed she was his counterpart and, for a short time, believed her to be his lover. they quickly realized the two gods were not suitable for each other. but the title stuck anyways.

• she is referred to as “favored by celestia” in one of my fics. she is indeed favored by the heavenly principles, but it’s not for a reason you would think. it’s a much darker reason.

• catalina is a halovian. in the memory shown to her by istaroth, she learned that halovians have a deep connection with the wind. this connection is why she was so close with barbatos. legends written about her said that her and barbatos were “closely intertwined for reasons beyond mortal comprehension” — in short, historians call them “very good friends.”

• her and lowen had a classic sapphic moment of “oh wow gorgeous woman what do i do” and lowen did indeed embarrass themselves a little upon meeting her for the first time. the both of them were incredibly down bad for each other. but catalina fell first and lowen fell WAY HARDER.

• within catalina’s kingdom, there were four extremely powerful knights that had strength on par with a god. she recognized their strength and conviction and invited them to be a part of an elite group of soldiers. this invitation later led to the birth of “queen catalina’s four archangels”.

• along with decarabian, catalina was considered a “god king”. although she lacked physical strength and had many flaws, she was considered extremely powerful by the gods of other nations bc of her elemental prowess.

• just like her successor, she valued freedom, resistance, and tranquility. she was a gentle god with a golden heart and a smart mind. legends say that barbatos is the way he is bc he was deeply bonded to his predecessor and valued her ideals, but who really knows for sure…?

• catalina genuinely believed that barbatos would take part in destroying the heavenly thrones. he never understood her words— she always tended to speak in riddles that he couldnt decipher, but he ended up subconsciously adopting that trait of hers in the future —but now… they’re loud and clear.

• barbatos hid her holy sword somewhere in mondstadt after her death. years later, when the traveler arrives in mondstadt, they find it while they are exploring the ruins of old mondstadt. they immediately ask venti about it later.

• she considered two people her soulmates in her lifetime: lowen, and barbatos. lowen was her lover. barbatos was her dear friend, but some are skeptical about the true nature of their relationship. historians can’t seem to figure out if barbatos and catalina were romantically involved, if they were just best friends, or some secret third thing.

• venti likes watching the historians try to decipher his relationship with catalina. it not only makes him giggle, but it makes him happy that not everyone has forgotten her like they did istaroth.

• barbatos and catalina’s relationship is completely ambiguous, left up to anyone’s interpretation.

Я просто захотела посмотреть, как он будет выглядеть как ведьма. Также я принесла прошлогодний работу �� Ророй и вроде бы выглядит более-менее нормально, хотя есть много косяков. Так ещё я сделала прямо целый разворот с моими персонажами эльфами, но не всеми. Ещё я сделала обычный скетч для нового образа Алекса/Среды, я правда очень старалась делать...

I redesigned Solomon! Gave his clothes some extra patterning. This is my Genshin Impact OC.

Backstory is under the cut! Content warning for: addiction, depression and suicide ideation.

Solomon was a Fatui field scout, captain of a small squad, and initially wielded a Geo Delusion instead of a Vision.

He was very depressed and suicidal. He actually hated his job and organisation - it wasn't as romantic as it was cut out to be when he entered, of course. It was very isolating, members were encouraged to turn on each other and to keep secrets, or to use and then abandon anyone when convenient. You know the Fatui. They're a mess.

Solomon wanted to leave the organization - but he knew way too many secrets. He knew the Fatui authorities would have to take him out once they realized he was no longer loyal.

On top of that, he developed an addiction to his Delusion, and the only reason he could keep it was for his job and missions. If he left - even if he were allowed to leave - he would have to hand it back (or else).

He didn't have the strenght to leave, and he felt trapped. Nowhere to go, no action he could take that would really free him.

In the middle of the Liyue quest, Childe asked the Traveler a favor to check on a Fatui team that had gone silent in Qingyun. That's how Aether met Solomon. He tracked him down, and when he got there, Solomon was contemplating jumping off the mountain.

And Aether for some reason talked him out of it, even if they were, technically, enemies. I mean. He's not just gonna let the man die.

Aether gave Solomon a shred of hope, and something he hadn't felt in a long time: Defiance, against the Fatui.

Solomon sees an opportunity in there and becomes an ally to Aether, in order to occasionally sneak Fatui secrets and intelligence to him. Like a double agent. It's rebellion, he wants Aether to be an obstacle, a pebble on the shoe of this organization that brought him so much contempt.

Solomon is still depressed, but after that, he starts working on a way to escape the Fatui without dying.

One day he finds the perfect opportunity and fakes his own death.

Except, of course, he takes his Delusion as he runs away.

It gets tracked, and he is found again by the Fatui, in the abandoned hilichurl camp he used as a hideout.

He is surrounded, there is a huge battle. And that's when he gets his Vision. His real Geo Vision. It severs his connection to the Delusion and grants him a gust of energy, enough that he can take down the soldiers surrounding him.

After that, well. The Fatui can get their Delusion back, and Solomon becomes a lesser problem. He is still wanted for the secrets he knows, but it buys him enough time to hide, and start the rest of his life.

And from then on, he has to discover what it's like - life - now that he's no longer tied to the Fatui. Now that he no longer wants to die.

There will be a road to recovery. Depression doesn't go away like it's magic, and neither does his addiction - he still has to live with the side effects of using a Delusion for so long. But now, he has something he didn't before. Now, he fights to live.
