Artist: Thorr's Hammer Album: Dommedagsnatt Released: 1996 Country: USA Genre: Doom metal
Track list:
Norge
Troll
Dommedagsnatt
Mellom Galgene
"Denne natten var dommedagsnatten, den siste natten de stolte guder og de faele beist i dette liv skulle se..."
Before Seattle musicians Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley formed their iconic drone band Sunn O))), they played in the very short lived death/doom metal group Thorr's Hammer. Helmed by Norwegian exchange student Runnhild Gammelsæter on vocals (who produced some of the most guttural, harsh singing to ever come out of a human larynx), the group was together for only six weeks before its dissolution upon Runnhild's return to Norway. During those six weeks they managed to create the punishingly heavy, doomy EP Dommedagsnatt (meaning "doomsday night" in Norwegian) with a lasting impact despite the band's short time together.
Anderson and O'Malley went on the form the sludge/doom band Burning Witch shortly after the breakup of Thorr's Hammer. Gammelsæter, on the other hand, obtained a PhD in cell biology though is still somewhat involved in the metal scene, contributing guest vocals on Sunn O)))'s 2003 album White1 as well as other projects.
Favorite tracks: Norge, Mellom Galgene

Hi Chris! I followed you a few years back because you posted a lot of Jazz and Hip Hop but I know you're into other genres as well. I've been trying to branch out a bit and you seem like a good person to ask for recommendations, so I was wondering if maybe you could post some of your favorite band/artists currently or anything you'd recommend? Any genre is fine! Love your blog btw, glad to see you're still on here :) Cheers!
thanks for the kind words anon, always nice to feel like the time i've spent on here wasn't a complete waste. sorry it took a few days to respond to this, but i wanted to give a more in depth answer. i can throw out some recommendations for sure, i basically just went through my last.fm from the last year and added all the non hip hop / jazz stuff to a list. you didn't mention if you were into metal or hardcore at all and there's quite a bit of that on here, but if you're not interested in that let me know and i can suggest some other stuff. i'm not a genre expert or anything but i did my best to give a brief description, so maybe if you end up liking one of these artists it'd be easier to find something similar. also a good chance you might be familiar with some of the ones that are more hip hop adjacent. you can also click the name of the artist and it'll take you to an album i recommend on bandcamp or spotify. i'd also be down to do another one of these later if you want, you can even hit me up off anon if you want. i appreciate you and i hope you're doing well! peace.
tried to make this as neat as i could so i put it in alphabetical order and made it a read more. 1. 10th Letter (Electronic/Jazz/Hip hop - Underappreciated producer, if you’re a fan of Flying Lotus you’d probably like this) 2. Alvvays (Indie Pop / Dream Pop) 3. At the Drive-In (Post-Hardcore, Relationship of Command is my favorite album in the genre) 4. Autonoesis (Thrash Metal / Black Metal) 5. Birds in Row (Post-Hardcore / Screamo) 6. Blood Command (Poppy Post-Hardcore/Alt Rock. Not a huge fan of their new vocalist, but the previous album and EP with Karina are both fantastic) 7. Boris (Drone, Stoner Rock, Noise Rock, Sludge, Post-Rock, Crust Punk – depends heavily on the album. ) 8. Bruno Pernadas (Progressive Jazz Fusion Art Pop) 9. Brutus (Post-Hardcore / Post-Metal, Stefanie is one of my favorite vocalists right now) 10. The Callous Daoboys (Mathcore) 11. Chelsea Wolfe (Darkwave / Gothic Rock / Doom Metal / Dark Folk) 12. Cibo Matto - (Art Pop / Trip Hop) 13. Cleric (Avant-Garde Metal / Mathcore / Brutal Prog) 14. Cloud Rat (Grindcore / Punk) 15. Converge (Metallic Hardcore, another all time favorite band.) 16. Cult of Luna (Atmospheric Sludge Metal / Post-Metal) 17. The Dillinger Escape Plan (Mathcore, top 5 band of all time for me) 18. Dragged Into Sunlight (Blackened Death / Doom Metal) 19. Dreamwell (Screamo/Post-Hardcore) 20. Every Time I Die (Southern-fried Metalcore / Mathcore, an all time favorite of mine) 21. Fievel is Glauque (Jazz Pop / Progressive Pop) 22. Genesis Owusu (Hip Hop/Neo-Soul/Funk/Post-Punk - all over the place in a good way) 23. Gospel (Blend of 70s Prog Rock with Screamo/Post-hardcore, with their 2022 album being a lot more of the former but still very good.) 24. Greyhaven (Metalcore / Post Hardcore - one of the few bands i know of carrying the torch for that Southern-tinged Metalcore sound since Every Time I Die split) 25. Grouper (Ambient/drone, folk and dream pop influences)
26. Hiatus Kaiyote (Psychedelic Neo-soul / Nu-Jazz) 27. Ichiko Aoba (Minimalistic Ambient Folk) 28. Imperial Triumphant (Avant-Garde Black Metal fused with Jazz) 29. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (Foundation of their sound is pretty much Psychedelic Rock but they pull from all over the musical spectrum. Last album even had a couple tracks with rapping, hard band to classify. It’d be easier to list the rock subgenres they haven’t dabbled in) 30. Knoll (Grindcore / Death Grind) 31. Krallice (Avant-Garde Black Metal) 32. Liv.e (Neo-Soul / Alternative R&B) 33. Massa Nera (Post-Hardcore / Screamo / Post-Rock) 34. Maudlin of the Well (Avant-Garde Progressive Metal - Also check Kayo Dot) 35. Messa (Doom Metal) 36. Misþyrming (Black Metal) 37. Ne Obliviscaris (Progressive Black Metal with violin except it’s actually tasteful and doesn’t feel gimmicky) 38. Neptunian Maximalism (Avant-Garde Jazz/Drone/Noise/Industrial.. like Swans meets Sun Ra meets John Zorn’s Electric Masada. These guys also have some of the best album artwork out there.) 39. The Ocean (Progressive Metal / Sludge - mainly on the earlier albums) 40. Oranssi Pazuzu (Avante Garde Psychedelic Black Metal) 41. Os Mutantes (Brazilian Psych Rock) 42. Otoboke Beaver (Noisy, High energy Hardcore / Garage Punk from Japan, very fun band) 43. Panopticon (Atmospheric Black Metal with some Bluegrass and Folk influences) 44. Protomartyr (I think I like these guys the most out of all the newer Post-Punk bands) 45. Rolo Tomassi (Mathcore, Post-Metal, Post-Hardcore) 46. Senza (Blackened Screamo/Mathcore. Chaotic in a way that reminds me of Jerome’s Dream a bit.) 47. Sigh (Black Metal, Avant-Garde Metal, Progressive Metal) 48. Soul Glo (Noisy Hardcore Punk, 2022 album incorporated some more hip hop elements and even had rap features. Shout out to McKinley Dixon who used to be on tumblr waaay back about a decade ago.) 49. Spiritbox (Alt Metal / Djent / Metalcore) 50. Stereolab (Space Age Pop mixed with Lounge Music and Krautrock) 51. Sudan Archives (Alternative R&B, Art Pop / Neo-Soul) 52. Tim Hecker (Ambient / Drone) 53. toe (Japanese Math Rock / Post-Rock - Kashikura Takashi is one of the greatest drummers ever.) 54. Tómarúm (Progressive Technical Melodic Black Metal) 55. Tricot (J-Rock / Math Rock / Pop) 56. Tropical Fuck Storm (Punk-Blues, Noise Rock) 57. U.S. Girls (Psychedelic Pop / Art Pop) 58. Ulcerate (Technical Death Metal) 59. Ultha (Atmospheric Black Metal) 60. Vanishing Twin ( Neo-Psychedelic Art Pop, check if you like Stereolab or Broadcast) 61. Wake (Black Metal / Tech Death / Sludge - Grindcore on the early releases) 62. Weyes Blood (Baroque Pop / Art Pop) 63. White Ward (Black Metal / Blackgaze /Dark Jazz) 64. Wormrot (Grindcore) 65. Yves Tumor (Unique sound blending Neo-Psych / Soul / Glam Rock / Hypnagogic Pop + some Sound Collage / Ambient stuff as well on earlier albums)

Everson Poe - The Tower (Full album PREMIERE, 2023) | Black metal, doom metal
In times as convoluted and draining as we're constantly having, there's always good use of stirring yet comforting ideas and perspectives going around and music is the perfect vessel for such to manifest through, something y'all are probably familiar with moving around this channel and extreme metal in itself. Today, we have one of a kind work from this year that will probably land in many people's AOTY list by its own right: "The Tower", most recent artistic effort by Mae Shults, queer trans multi-instrumentalist based in Chicago, as EVERSON POE. What we have here is a block of work divided in two songs over 25 minutes each (fans of Lustre can celebrate now, not expecing atmospheres though), in a masterful blend of black metal with doom stepping into sludge. "The Tower" is a concept album named after the tarot card with the same name, pursuing to represent what the card mean implies and in its both sides, in the words of the artist: <<[...] the tower represents change in the most monumental sense. when upright, it portrays potentially groundbreaking progress; when reversed, it signals the destruction of false foundations. both of these meanings can be positive and negative; a dialectic that, in this case, acts as the outline for the story of a collection of organizations that seek to hold back and even eliminate those who are othered by their gender identity[…]>>.
Both songs, 'I. Upright' and 'II. Reversed' also reflect this theme and symbolism about the tower with lyrics as impactful as being precisely struck by lightning could be, holding the voice of the protagonist in this epic work, the first trans woman executed by the government for being trans, giving this character in the fiction the shape of a religious martyr accompanied by voice samples adding emphasis in the given context (featuring the north american politician, representative Zooey Zephyr, first trans woman to be elected to the Montana legislature with the Democratic Party, coming from LGTB+ activism), showcasing the naturally deep emotional level of the album. Sonically, beyond overall genre / style features, Mae has achieved to build the uneasy of such a topic and writing beyond lyrics shown from start, by heavy and droning doomy tempos and aching vocals (not only Mae's, but from a handful of guests adding their own seen alive in ominous chorals and screaming backings). Far from being any predicatble, "The Tower" will surprise you in all of its movements through this solid work of a bit less than an hour; a work that asks from the listener to pay attention, to care for every detail put in form for an experience that is enjoyable as it is tough. This is an album to stay with, to crown an outstanding discography as Mae has since they started around 2009.

It's end of April so toaster of my month. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Topster 1 imploded due to schizophrenia. That's funny tbh.
This month I only listened to metal (and Sade) because I love metal (and Sade).
Idk how to rate: Morbid-Year of the Goat (Black metal): This is the most trve kvlt shit out there. The sound quality is so doghsit on two-third of the record that I had a headache after finishing this. However this is arguably one of the best bm record out there. Dead's vocal delivery was truly something else, it's a shame what happened to him.
8th: Carpathian Forest-long ass name (Black metal): Key word for this short critique is "boring". It has good ideas but it doesn't really stick that well.
7th: Sex Prisoner-Tannhauser Gate (Powerviolence): Oh my God this is great. It's powerviolence so it has some rough edges but Lullaby is perfect.
6th: Black Sabbath-Master of Reality (Heavy/Doom metal): I like this record but I can't see why most people consider this to be the best Black Sabbath, or even best doom metal record. Probably just didn't click for me for now.
5th: Melvins-Bullhead (Sludge/Stoner Metal): "Yeah drug addiction kinda sucks plays the most sludge metal riff ever" It's great. I tried getting into Melvins a while ago, but I didn't really vibe with the album I checked out. On the other hand, now with my second try I definitely see the appeal. Probably will check out their other stuff now with a better view.
4th: Thy Catafalque-Róka Hasa Rádió (Avant-guard metal): I almost cried about how good it is. Something about hearing good Hungarian music after the storm of shit really touched my hearth. Also the second song is like 20 minutes long and is kinda weird conceptually but still is the best song on the album.
3rd: Sade-Love Deluxe(R&B): I would kill for this woman. No Ordinary Love has to be one of my favourite song ever.
2nd: Candlemass-Epicus Doomicus Metallicus(Epic Doom Metal): This is probably the most doom metal album ever. Also it makes me feel like a wizard. 10/10
1st: Boris-Boris at last, Feedbacker (Drone Metal): The heaviest album ever conceived. At my first listen I felt like I melted into my bed. Something about it just works so damn well. Drone has to be one of the hardest to get into genre but god damn it's really good if you're willing to give it a proper chance.

apa yg saya dengarkan di jan 2024.
inspiral carpet, devil hoping (indie rock). Band fondasi britpop bermain tidak seperti roots aslinya, lebih rock!
deftones, white pony (nu metal). Jauh sebelum ada playlist mid-west emo x screamo menjamur di youtube, deftones dengan whitepony nya sudah merekamnya
nick cave and the bad seeds, the good son (blues rock, new wave). Bayangkan dracula atau hantu kastil memainkan musik di dalam chapel miliknya semalam suntuk
big noyd, episodes of a hustla (thug rap). Boombap’s 90s tak pernah salah untuk diputar ulang di dekade 2020-an
kilat, rantai penjinak (black metal).
sly and the family stone, stand! (psychedelic, funk, soul). Seperti berada di tengah riuh ramai parade demonstrasi dan tuntutan warga keturunan africa
nine inch nails, bad witch (art rock, industrial, post rock). Kegelapan industrial dan macam genre yang berbaur menciptakan nuansa kegelapan yang mudah dimaknai tetapi sulit ditafsirkan
godstar, the brightest star (indie rock). Aku terpelanting ke irisan ruang antara era 60’s dan 90’s. Sesekali merasakan manis nya suara beach boys dsb - sesekali begitu noice seperti band indie rock era 90’s
all natural lemon and lime flavors, straight blue line (space rock, shoegaze). Ketika shoegaze ala mbv bercampur dgn post rock dan trip hop dimainkan di space ship yang meluncur menuju Planet Dagobah
star99, bitch unlimited (emo, alternative rock, indie rock). Album rilisan 2023 yang siap mengguncang romansa manis nya masa remaja era Y2K

2022: Aidan Baker Corner
I’ve mentioned this in, I think, several reviews I’ve written of records Aidan Baker plays on at this point, but dude is very prolific. Like I suspect most listeners I first encountered him in immense drone doom duo Nadja but he’s in a bunch of other groups/duos/etc as well, and puts out lots of solo material as well. At the end of the year he made an Instagram post listing all of his 2022 releases and even though I’d heard a ton, I think I was still under half?
I do like a lot of his stuff; he tends to work in genres and modes I enjoy, and he’s very good at them. But at this point putting a bunch of them on my “top 40″ feels vaguely counterproductive (only in terms of covering what I listened to this year). (This also can make it hard to review, because I’ve said a lot about his music at this point and don’t want to repeat myself.) But he also consistently makes some of my favourite records of the year. So who knows how often I’ll listen to and love enough of his work that a lil’ mini-list just for him makes sense, but I was kind of amused that it did even just for one year. After the cut, a quick roundup of what my top picks for 2022 were, with links to the Bandcamp pages.
Aidan Baker — The Evelyn Tables
Named after the earliest known “anatomical preparations” in Europe, the track titles here are things like “CNS” and “Distribution of Veins“ and the sound (based entirely I believe around guitar, both electric and acoustic) is “textural ambient drone.” Very gentle and soothing, kind of crepuscular, potentially more background-y than even his other ambient stuff but in a very successful way. Has he done soundtracks? Someone should get him to do soundtracks.
Aidan Baker — Tenebrist
A solo power trio record, instrumental again but a lot more riff-based and fuzzy. Still textural (and FWIW, still excellent working music in my opinion), but maybe textural sludge instead of ambient. Heavy in a very basic, direct way and I mean that as a compliment.
Baker Ja Lehtisalo — Crocodile Tears
This is an interesting one; Lehtisalo is the main guy from Circle, a pretty interesting Finnish metal/experimental band who’ve been around for a while an done a lot. I’m not super familiar, but if you haven’t heard the record they did a few years ago with Richard Dawson, you should. He and Baker both play a bit of everything here, with Lehtisalo’s keyboards and vocals being the most audibly distinct new bits. These are palpably songs but long, dense, repetitive ones; the 14.5 minutes of the opening “(And I Want Your Perfect) Crocodile Tears“ (longest song on the record!) should tell you whether you’re on its wavelength.
Nadja — Labyrinthine
I didn’t save the two records from arguably Baker’s “main” gig with partner Leah Buckareff for the end; we’re doing alphabetical order, as always. But I did include a video for (half of) one of the tracks from this record at the beginning of this post because it’s my favourite, and honestly one of my favourite records of the year, full stop. It’s also, along with the Hatchie, the one I’m the most sad and frustrated that I couldn’t pull together a review of. At least in this case it’s partly because I reviewed another (excellent) Nadja LP in 2022. The fact that the two “main” Nadja LPs in 2022 included distinctly novel elements for the duo (four guest vocalists here, a drummer on Nalepa) is not, I think, an indication that the core concept of the band is lagging or running out of steam. I mean, I thought Luminous Rot kicked ass too! But it’s definitely exciting to see what four very different vocalists brought to Nadja’s music here, and how the duo changed things up to match each singer. The biggest praise I can give: I would listen to full LPs by all four of these distinct “bands.”
Nadja — Nalepa
Okay, so this one I reviewed. And if I wound up slightly more excited by Labyrinthine, more bands should strive to have something this good be the second-best thing they’ve released recently. Record live in studio, Ángela Muñoz Martínez brings a lot to this record. I frequently find myself wanting to compare Baker’s work in this mode (with Nadja or elsewhere) to, like, storm systems and this one really keeps putting that in my head. I also liked his solo accompanying LP of the same name but it felt like cheating to include that here too and these mini-lists already feel enough like cheating.

Weedreek - Weedreek and Fascist Reek [English/Español]
Mexico City based DIY doom/drone/sludge/extreme metal
Much to our benefit Miguel Krieg unearthed recordings that he made years ago and released them under the name Weedreek. Between the two EPs there is a striking difference: the first is closer to the extreme side of metal, with very experimental touches. The second, only released a few weeks ago, is already more oriented towards doom/sludge, there is little room for experimentation, but sticking to a couple of specific genres makes an important point for the theme of the EP.

HELLO I'M HERE TO BULLY VIPER ABOUT THEIR METALCORE
just kidding, if you like metalcore you should listen to Viper. If you like that real kvlt shit you should listen to me though! also if you like Doom, Death, Post-Hardcore, or Long Atmospheric Black Metal Songs about Winter and Space also other things! what is a genre?
Gonna do my best to keep this organized and not ramble too much.
DOOM
Some classic doomy-dooms! Doom is usually characterized by slow, chugging riffs and long, heavy songs. Lots of overlap with things like "black metal" and "atmospheric metal". Again, what is a genre. We'll try to go from "classic" to "weird" as we go down the list though.
Traditional doom bands you will know if you know any dooms are St. Vitus, Candlemass, Black Sabbath, and Pentagram. If you like those bands you may like... Cirith Ungul - I'd be remiss not to rec my favourite Tolkien-inspired band (suck it, Amon Amaarth). Pagan Altar - in the same "classic" doom vein as above. They got that sweet 80s death metal sound and that gothy wizard vibe. Pallbearer - Funeral doom. Slow, heavy riffs, sometimes with clear vocals.
Mournful Congregation - Funeral Doom, heavy with growly vocals. You can usually tell a funeral doom band by its name having something to do with funerals, churches, and doom.
Tribunal - Gothic doom. Heavy chugging riffs and churchbell antics. This time you are attending a funeral at Dracula's castle.
Dragged Into Sunlight - Death-doom. It's like doom, but with screechier death metal vocals. A Flock Named Murder - this is very good, I am listening to it right now. Bandcamp tells me it's "sludge doom" but I am telling you it's just doomy black metal. Also that it's good. Sleep - Stoner doom. What it says on the tin. POTION - Stoner doom that will make you feel like a wizard.
Electric Wizard - also Stoner Doom, will make you feel like a trippier, more Electric wizard. Boris - Only sort of in the Doom category because only some of their tracks are doomy or droney. Boris is more like hard experimental post-rock and very fun. Except when they collab with... Sun O))) (& Boris) - Experimental post-shoegaze drone-doom. I guess.
DEATH METAL
Deathclock is death metal. So are bands like Slayer, Megadeath, and Metallica. Since Death Metal is kinda the overarching genre for a lot of stuff, I'm just going to rec some of my faves. Death metal is typically fast with blastbeats and weedly riffs like heavy metal before it, but with more growling and screaming and all the songs are about...death.
Carcass - The album Surgical Steel is about slaughterhouses. Pro-vegan death metal! AHNA - "Blackened" death, which means death metal which is too fast to be doom but full of doomy elements like a heavy chugging baseline. Skeletonwitch - A personal favourite of mine. Fun, clean, jammy death metal. Can't beat the name, either.
THRASH / SPEED
200% more headbang. Thrash is all about fast blastbeats and shouting OUGH! Speed metal is a close genre that has that fun 80s hair metal flair. I just realised I can drop bandcamp links and they show up in a little player. Here's some thrash, speed, and black metal that was too thrashy for the doom section.
This post is now TOO LONG. But I have so many more recs! Leaving off with some stuff that didn't fit that I really dig right now: LINGUA IGNOTA - Angry discomforting experimental doom? She will haunt you. Sonja - heavy metal with a goth-pop bent that says trans rights! Their guitarist was fired from Absu when she came out as trans so you should stop listening to Absu and start listening to Sonja. Chat Pile - Doom-punk, chugging riffs and hard hitting social commentary. Asunojokei - Japanese shoegaze emo black metal blend. Jammy and clean.
While I'm going through my metal revival, do you have any band recs? Favourite songs of the moment? 😌😌😌
oH man... you know not what you ask. I rewrote this so many times trying to make something coherent 😩 I'm just alskdfjdlgkf at all times. I don't know if you want a handy list or if you want me to infodump about music, so I'll try to be Normal about this and just do a list for now. I tend to listen almost exclusively to metalcore/hardcore adjacent music, so that's the tl;dr of this whole post. I like screamies and breakdowns that make me want to throw hands/drive my car through a brick wall.
First off: I love last.fm. You can see my all-time (aka 2020-2022...) listening habits here if stats are your thing. It's not as Snapchat-like as Spotify's Wrapped, but I can also get a mini "Wrapped" report every week so I think it's pretty cool.
If you've seen me mention music, you probably know I'm bonkers about Motionless in White, so I'll throw them out there as their own little paragraph. Goth/horror isn't my thing at all, but something about their music just does something to my brain that makes me end up in the top 0.005% of their listeners on Spotify last year 🙃 It was really hard to narrow it down to two songs, but I'll suggest Devil's Night (synths! yeah boi) and Scoring the End of the World (feat. Mick Gordon!).
Bad Omens - Dethrone / Blood
ERRA - Sol Absentia / Eye of God
Beartooth - Below / Beaten in Lips / honourable mention to The Last Riff (instrumental!)
Stray From the Path - Goodnight Alt-Right / Chest Candy
I Prevail - There's Fear In Letting Go / FWYTYK
Fit for a King - End (The Other Side) / Reaching Out
Trivium - The Phalanx / Strife
Stick To Your Guns - Hush / No Way to Live
Norma Jean - 1994 / Penny Margs
Electric Callboy - We Got the Moves / Spaceman (feat. FiNCH)
Bleed From Within - I Am Damnation / Into Nothing
Make Them Suffer - Doomswitch / Contraband (feat. Courtney LaPlante)
Alpha Wolf - Akudama
Bury Tomorrow - Abandon Us
Every Time I Die - It Remembers / Planet Shit
Thornhill - The Hellfire Club / Nurture
Underoath - No Frame / I'm Pretty Sure I'm Out of Luck and Have No Friends
I also made this into a playlist on Spotify if you listen there! I also have a longer suggestions playlist here on Spotify if you're interested. It has a lot of the same stuff and more, if the first one tickles your fancy.
Friday was Bandcamp Friday over on, well, Bandcamp. This just means that Bandcamp waives their fees for artists for the day, so artists receive basically full sales. I don't listen on there as much as I should, but you can find me and my collection here. Here's some fun stuff I've found or been sent:
Transgressive - Seize the Means of Reproduction // trans thrash
INTERRA - In Your Hands // melodic death metal
orphantwin - Future Classic // melodic ??? metalcore? idk man. side project for two of the guys from Norma Jean
G.L.O.S.S. - DEMO // punk
Sharptooth - imperfect animal // hardcore
Employed to Serve - Conquering // metalcore
PUPIL SLICER - Mirrors // grindcore
Vein.fm - This World Is Going to Ruin You // mathcore
SION - self titled // metalcore, ex-Killswitch Engage vocalist
Khemmis - Deceiver // doom metal
