Societal Interventions in Genetic Diseases: Genetic diseases are among the most common diseases that occur or affect a huge portion of the world's population. The main cause of the diseases is attributed to the mutations in genes that are fundamental for the usual functioning of the organism's cells. Following the mutation of a gene, the encoded protein fails to function properly and certain cellular processes are likely to go skewed resulting in genetic diseases. Due to their significant impact on the world's population, genetic diseases have profound effects at the individual, family, and societal levels. However, the effect of the diseases is largely experienced at the individual level because humans have genes similar to other living organisms. As a result of the effect of genetic diseases on the three basic facets of a community or society, various interventions have been adopted to deal with the increasing problem. Notably, most of these interventions are scientific advances or measures whose application may not only be unfamiliar or frightening. Moreover, several interventions or applications continue to evolve in various parts of the globe in order to deal with the diseases. The ongoing evolution of these interventions originate from the fact that researchers continue to discover more regarding the role of genes in common disorders (Scacheri, n.d.). One of the most common societal intervention measures in genetic diseases that is used worldwide including in the United States and the United Kingdom is genetic screening whose principle is based on the binding of a query to the DNA molecule of the individual being screened (Samem, n.d.). In this procedure, the query used is commonly a single stranded DNA that binds to the test sample as matching DNA nucleotide sequences bind to one another. As one of the major societal interventions in genetic diseases, there are two major types of genetic screening i.e. The screening for unborn babies and the screening of children and adults. For children and adults, this intervention is carried out to confirm the possibility of whether the individual has mutated genes of particular characteristics or disease and to test adults in order to determine the possibility of their children being at risk of certain disease. The screening of unborn babies is known as prenatal screening, which is geared towards identifying genetic disorders during early pregnancy. This type of genetic screening has been continually used for various decades through the use of different techniques. In the United States and the United Kingdom, genetic screening used was testing newborn babies for PKU deficiency. As a compulsory screening, a newborn baby is put on a special diet and will not undergo serious mental retardation if he/she is found to have PKU deficiency. More information regarding societal interventions in genetic diseases in the United States and United Kingdom reveals that there is screening for genetic vulnerability to diseases that are environmentally induced illnesses like elevated blood cholesterol. Similar to the U.S. And the UK, genetic screening is the most common societal intervention in genetic diseases used in other parts of the world. However, there are various techniques for genetic screening used elsewhere such as the effective screening program for Thalassemia used in Cyprus and Italy. An epidemiological approach for preventing and controlling the three most common genetic diseases is the new intervention measure used to prevent such diseases. The approach has been developed through examining diseases like deafness in dalmations, great dane, hip dysplasia in German shepard, lab retrievers, Newfoundland, and glaucoma FCR in canine pedigree breeds. As a new technology for designing programs to prevent genetic diseases, the epidemiological approach consists of methods that use all relationships within the pedigree and common environmental factors (Wood, Lakhani & Henley, 2004, p. 24). Based on the outcomes of polygenic model in the approach, the method proves to be effective in preventing the diseases. References: Samem, F.M.A. (n.d). Human Genetic Screening. Wearable navigation system offers new hope for people with vision loss
Tumblr media
- By InnoNurse Staff -
A new study introduces a wearable navigation system that offers hope for individuals who are blind or have low vision (pBLV).
Developed by researchers at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, the system uses vibrational feedback through a discreet belt and audio cues via a headset to help users navigate complex environments safely and independently.
The belt incorporates 10 vibration motors, a custom circuit board, and a microcontroller, providing sensory feedback about obstacle location and proximity. The researchers tested the system using virtual reality (VR), simulating a subway station as perceived by someone with advanced glaucoma. Results from 72 participants with normal vision revealed the system significantly reduced collisions and improved navigation smoothness.
The system complements an existing mobile app, Commute Booster, designed to assist pBLV with transit navigation. Funded by a $5 million NSF grant, the research team aims to refine the technology for real-world use, ultimately enabling discreet, efficient, and wearable mobility aids for the visually impaired. Future studies will include individuals with actual vision loss.

The Importance of a Comprehensive Eye Exam: What to Expect and Why It Matters
Introduction
Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining good vision and overall eye health. A comprehensive eye exam goes beyond a standard vision check, thoroughly assessing your eye health and detecting any potential issues early on. Understanding what a comprehensive eye exam entails can help you prioritize eye care and catch any developing issues before they impact your vision.
What Is a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
A comprehensive eye exam is an in-depth evaluation of your eye health and vision. Unlike a basic vision screening, which may only assess clarity, a comprehensive eye exam examines various aspects of your eyes’ health, structure, and functionality. This type of exam often includes tests for visual acuity, refraction, and checks for common eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.
Tumblr media
What to Expect During a Comprehensive Eye Exam
Medical and Vision History The first step in a comprehensive eye exam involves a review of your medical history. This includes your vision history, any existing eye conditions, and any family history of eye diseases. This background helps the optometrist understand any genetic or lifestyle factors that may affect your vision.
Visual Acuity Testing This test measures how well you see at various distances. Using a standard eye chart, your optometrist will assess the clarity of your vision and may use lenses to determine if you need corrective eyewear.
Refraction Test for Prescription If a visual correction is needed, the refraction test helps determine your exact prescription. The optometrist will use a phoropter to test different lenses until finding the ones that provide the sharpest vision.
Eye Movement Tests Eye movement tests, or ocular motility tests, evaluate how well your eyes can follow a moving object. This part of the exam ensures that your eye muscles are functioning properly and working together effectively.
Pupil and Peripheral Vision Examination The doctor will also test your pupils’ response to light and your peripheral vision to assess nerve function and detect any blind spots that could indicate underlying issues.
Slit Lamp Examination A slit lamp is used to examine the front structures of your eye under high magnification. This test can reveal signs of cataracts, corneal issues, and conjunctivitis, and it’s essential for diagnosing a range of eye conditions.
Retinal Examination (Fundus Exam) During this part of the exam, your eyes may be dilated to allow the doctor a better view of the retina and optic nerve. The fundus exam helps in detecting retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and optic nerve damage.
Eye Pressure Test (Tonometry) This test measures the pressure inside your eyes and is crucial for detecting glaucoma. High eye pressure can be an early warning sign of this condition, allowing for early treatment.
Why a Comprehensive Eye Exam Is Essential
Routine eye exams help detect issues that might not have obvious symptoms, such as glaucoma or diabetic eye disease, which can cause permanent damage if left untreated. Early detection allows for more effective treatment, often preventing or delaying vision loss. Additionally, a comprehensive eye exam can reveal other health conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, that may first present signs in the eyes.
How Often Should You Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
For adults, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended every 1-2 years, especially if you wear glasses or contact lenses. Children should also have regular eye exams, as early detection of issues like myopia or amblyopia can support better visual development. If you have a family history of eye disease or other risk factors, your optometrist may recommend more frequent exams.
Conclusion
A comprehensive eye exam is a critical part of maintaining eye health and overall wellness. By checking vision, eye structure, and internal health, these exams can catch potential issues early and keep your vision clear. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist today to ensure that your eyes stay healthy and that your vision remains sharp for years to come.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damages the optic nerve resulting in vision loss and blindness if not treated in time. It is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide and usually occurs due to increased pressure in the eye. ("Susceptibility to...") Types of Glaucoma: Open Angle Glaucoma is the most common type, causing a gradual loss of vision. It usually occurs due to increased pressure within the eye and sometimes due to decreased blood flow to the optic nerve. Closed Angle Glaucoma is less common. It occurs when the iris and the lens block the movement of fluid between the chambers of the eye, causing pressure to build up. Congenital Glaucoma is a form of glaucoma that affects some infants at birth causing cloudy and teary eyes. Severe vision loss or blindness may occur if not detected and treated at an early stage. Secondary Glaucoma refers to glaucoma which develops due to external reasons such as eye injury, tumor, complication of diabetes, or a reaction to eye medication such as corticosteroids. ("Topic Overview," Glaucoma: Yahoo Health,) Risk Factors Age, race, family history / genetics, and medical history are some of the notable risk factors. Older people (over 70) are 4 to 7 times more likely to have glaucoma than people 40 to 50 years old. African-Americans are 4 to 5 times than white Americans susceptible to the disease; people with family history of open-angle glaucoma have about 9 times greater risk of developing glaucoma; and medical history of previous eye injuries, eye surgery or long-term steroid also increase one's risk of glaucoma. ("What Increases Your Risk?"; "Who is at Risk...") Symptoms: The symptom of "open-angle glaucoma" is a gradual vision loss which usually goes un-noticed until substantial vision loss has occurred; loss of peripheral vision occurs before the loss of central vision. Symptoms of "closed-angle glaucoma" are often episodic, occurring in the evening and ending by morning; at other times they can be severe with sudden, severe blurring of vision; severe pain in the eye; eye redness; or nausea and vomiting. Congenital glaucoma causes watery eyes, sensitivity to light, cloudy eyes, or larger than normal eyes; rubbing, squinting, or keeping their eyes closed by babies are its other tell-tale signs. ("Topic Overview," Glaucoma: Yahoo Health, para on "What are the Symptoms?") Diagnosis Glaucoma is diagnosed by an ophthalmologist through a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test, which measures the eyesight at various distances; a visual field test to measure the peripheral vision; tonometry, to measure the pressure inside the eye; dilated eye exam for examining the retina and optic nerve for signs of damage by putting special dilatory eye-drops in the eye; and by pachymetry, measurement of the thickness of the cornea by using an ultrasonic wave instrument. ("Glaucoma" National Eye Institute, "How is Glaucoma Detected?") Treatment Treatment for glaucoma is aimed at slowing the damage to the optic nerve. In adults, the eyesight already lost cannot be reversed while in children with congenital glaucoma some reversal is possible. Most treatments consist of lowering of the pressure in the eye (the intraocular pressure) through medication, laser treatment, or conventional surgery. The treatment is usually started with medicines, i.e., eye drops or pills that either cause the eye to make less fluid or lower pressure by helping to drain the fluid from the eye. If the medications do not help, laser surgery is tried to drain the fluid from the eye. If both these types of treatment are unsuccessful, conventional surgery, i.e., making a new opening for the fluid to leave the eye, can be tried.
