Harkrow is strict, impatient and prone to shouting. His temper has been a source of frustration for many who have worked with him. Harkrow is very motivated by power, abusing any scrap of which he can get. However, he is also very loyal and duty-bound, and sucks up to Aegis at any chance he gets in hopes of being recognised as valuable by his king and superior

Backstory

General Harkrow has worked hard his entire life to get to where he is today; the highest ranking Guardian, save of course for Aegis himself. He sees himself as superior to most due to his title, all the power easily going to his head. All he wants is to prove to Aegis that he’s the most worthy of his favour and to maintain a space within Aegis’ inner circle in order to maintain as much power as possible, even if he has to suck up a little to do it

Fun Facts

• Harkrow is incredibly frustrated by the fact that he can’t use holographic illusions consistently. He attended a few of Ellegaarde’s classes, but left indignantly after she deduced that his spotty success was due to some mental blockages

• Harkrow was largely self-taught in illusions, flight and fighting, but when he joined the Guardians and began to train with them he thrived from the order and clear instruction, helping him to rise up the ranks quickly. As much as he hates it, he works best as a follower rather than a leader

• Harkrow keeps his armour on at all times, constantly displaying his status as the General of the Guardians

The Final Two

Yeah so I straight-up had no idea how to reveal the final two characters in a normal way so here are the concept Picrews for the final two notable characters in Byoldervine

Number one is Clay Acaron, who I wish looked more red than pink. Clay is the son of Corrus Acaron, and heir to the throne of Nexus. He can come off as a very stern, prim-and-proper type of character, feeling the weight of having big shoes to fill as a prince and future king, and studies very hard to compensate for the fact that he’s not naturally talented when it comes to his abilities, and could be considered a ‘late bloomer’. Clay tries very hard to be taken seriously and to prove he has what it takes to rule, though his father is a little concerned that he’s letting it cost him his own life in the pursuit of someone else’s

And number two (an apt description of this character) is General Harkrow, the first in command of the Guardians excluding King Aegis himself. The Guardians are an elite force of Tyrions who watch over Terran in secret to ensure the humans aren’t privy to the magical world. General Harkrow is nothing if not a bastard with a big ego, always sucking up to and vying for Aegis’ favour in hopes of more money and power. Everyone else is treated as an irritant at best, and if you actually make a problem of yourself you’re nothing more than dirt on his shoe. He believes being the one to capture the heroes will get him a promotion - it will not

Anessa has long blonde hair and deep blue eyes. Her skin is fair and smooth. She looks very stereotypically angelic, and when she was young everyone agreed she was the most beautiful child in all the realms. She also has feathery wing-like ears just as her father does

Anessa usually wears white or other light pastel colours, and wears dresses and simple jewellery befitting her status as heir to the throne

Personality

Aegis has been training Anessa for rule all her life, and Anessa has taken it all in stride. She’s adopted her father’s patience and strategic mindset, as well as his keenness for order and organisation. She can come off as a little stoic at times, but she’s confident in herself and her decisions. Out of all her siblings, she’s probably the best at admitting to a fault or mistake, but this is partially due to her having the most ease with spotting and correcting them without getting frustrated in herself. This is where Aegis and Anessa differ; she’s able to accept it more easily when things don’t go to plan and keep a level head that allows her to swiftly find a new solution, whereas it would greatly upset Aegis unless he had a backup plan already prepared

Backstory

Anessa has been raised to be the future queen for as long as she can remember, and honestly doesn’t know much outside of this predetermined path she’s on. It’s left her quite sheltered in terms of the general world around her, something all her siblings have to some extent but aren’t nearly as restricted as Anessa is. Due to this, she’s struggled to find interests outside of her training and studies.

Anessa is additionally sheltered in that she rarely gets to go on business trips away from Tyrion, since Aegis will take either Lazulai or Mullo depending on his destination, leaving Anessa to rule in his absence. Anessa feels some jealousy about that, even if she understands it logically and is happy that it means her siblings get time with Aegis too

Anessa has always been the golden child of the family, and all the siblings except for her are well aware that she’s the favourite. Anessa knows she gets the most of Aegis’ time, but believes it’s purely down to her needing more training than the others since she’s his heir. She can’t fathom why she’d be the favourite when it’s brought up to her since she finds the others so much more interesting than her - why would she be favoured as the boring one?

Despite her life’s work and purpose being to prepare to be queen, the idea of it is quite frightening to her; it would mean that something had happened to her father, and she loves Aegis dearly. It worries her how sure he is that she’ll soon be queen, and she’s concerned about his health due to it, but she’s largely brushed it off as just another of his plans that she’s not entirely privy to

• Anessa was born in the year 2000, the same year that Byoldervine died

• Anessa mostly tries to copy what her siblings do when she spends time with them; she doesn’t know much of what else to do with others

• Anessa is content with being the future queen, and there’s no doubt that she’d make a good one, but her complacency in her role is definitely impacted by her lack of other options; she’ll be happy as queen, but she has no idea if there’s something else out there or not that would make her happier

Aegis has blue eyes and slicked-back mint green hair. He has a golden halo over his head, as well as retractable angelic white wings on his back and feathery ears that look similar to his wings. He always wears white suits with either black or gold detailing - the Picrew is pretty much perfect for how I’d imagine it. His appearance is almost always symmetrical and as perfect as he can get it

Personality

Aegis, as his title would suggest, values order above all else, working hard to maintain peace and security across his realm. This can be taken to extremes at times, which can impact his relationships for better or for worse; the difference between unflinchingly practical and coldly detached can be as simple as whether or not he’s acting in your interests. He can become very agitated and distressed when things don’t go to his plans, though he tries his best to keep his composure when around others. Additionally, Aegis is very prideful, wanting to show off his realm and his children as the wonderful, perfect creations they are.

Backstory

Aegis has ruled over Tyrion since its creation, leading with a firm hand to instil perfection upon his new world. Within Tyrion there is peace, prosperity and order. Aegis had previously attempted to extend this order to the other realms as well, sending his angelic forces to provide blessings and grant protection to the inhabitants of other realms, though this was shut down quickly by Byoldervine and never garnered much interest from the other two realms, who had their own means of magical interventions

When Byoldervine passed away, Aegis was the one to push through the grief and keep his fellow Celestials going. He formed the Guardians to infiltrate Terran and live amongst the humans so that they could respect Byoldervine’s wishes to keep the humans separate from the other realms and their inhabitants. To this day the Guardians work in secret to disguise magical or otherworldly activity from the humans

It wasn’t long at all after Byoldervine’s death and the formation of the Guardians that Aegis had his children, who he now works to train to be future rulers of Tyrion

Fun Facts

• Aegis has had a long string of lovers in the past, but has never married. Some theorise that Aegis has never found the perfect partner, despite looking. As a result, none of Aegis’ children have the same mothers, though another theory is that Aegis asked Nordsvark to create the perfect children for him rather than them being born through biological means, which would explain why none of the four children have ever met another parent

• While many people believe that Aegis kept having children until he got a son, in truth Aegis has wanted exactly four children for a good while now; it’s all part of his life plan

• Aegis absolutely hordes notebooks and stationary, I can’t imagine him not having the most extravagant and neatly organised collections in the universe

Sy has fair, clear skin with bright blue eyes and minty green hair that they wear in a short ponytail. They like to experiment with makeup and fashion, so their style can change up often - the hair stays, though, they love their hair. Sy also wears a binder at times

Personality

Sy is a very snarky person, never shying away from saying exactly what they think of people or making witty comments at their expense. They also care a lot about their appearance and have a high opinion of themself, their self-confidence something that many people admire. Ultimately, though, Sy is well-meaning and keen to show their best self

Despite all this, they act much differently when around Aegis, focusing much more on trying to appease him and be the perfect ‘daughter’

Backstory

Sy has always enjoyed experimenting with their appearance and how they expressed themself, even when they were young. This lead to an interest in hair, makeup and fashion, and later to their pursuit of creating their own clothing

Sy often feels like the forgotten child amongst their siblings, who Aegis is always taking away for meetings or training to be queen one day while he simply sends Sy off to the Amphitheatre for as many lessons as they can possibly attend. While Sy is mostly very open about their identity, they keep it a secret from Aegis to avoid rocking the boat with him any further - they may be a little bitter about Aegis’ apparent lack of interest in them compared to their siblings, but that doesn’t mean that Sy doesn’t want to still have that relationship with him and to prove themself worthy of that attention

Fun Facts

• Sy has been working on their fashion designs for years now and often wears their own designs. Their sisters sometimes wear Sy’s designs as well, and on multiple occasions Sy has bribed Persephone into modelling for them while they make adjustments

• Sy’s favourite place in the world is a local fabric shop. Sy could stay there for hours feeling all of the different fabrics and holding them up to see how they look in different lighting

• Sy has a small crush on Persephone, but knows that she’s asexual and so doesn’t want to say anything (they’ve considered the homoromanticism but concluded that they don’t count into that since they’re not a girl)

Angelus wears white full-body armour almost identical to that of the Guardians, with the difference being that his accents are gold and not bronze, which is typically a symbol of Aegis Cantor himself as king and god. The only visible parts of Angelus’ body are his wings, which he can extend and retract at will, just as all Tyrions can

Personality

Angelus is stubborn and headstrong, not one to back down or shy away from something difficult. This can get him into trouble with allies and enemies alike as he can quite easily come off as incredibly rude, arrogant or maliciously ignorant - and on occasion these accusations will be more accurate than he’d care to admit. Despite this, Angelus is fiercely protective, going to great and painful lengths to defend those he cares about, and once you have an in with him he’ll value your insights more than you think, working hard to prove himself even if he won’t admit it

Backstory

Little is known about Angelus’ background due to his unknown identity. Enigma has managed to gather the following:

• Angelus potentially has at least one sibling, but he refuses to confirm or deny anything

• Angelus has a sweetheart, but Enigma can’t tell if they’re a crush or a lover. Angelus refuses to share more

• Angelus seems to dislike Aegis Cantor as a monarch. This dislike doesn’t seem to extend to his children, judging by Angelus’ interactions with Lazulai, but he does appear to be anti-monarchist in terms of the Cantors specifically

Fun Facts

• Despite Persephone being the original hero, Angelus is considered the first one after he took the credit for her handling of the Drayrise Griffin. This decision, ironically, was part of the reason why Persephone took on the Enigma persona and became a permanent hero herself

• Angelus wears Guardian armour in Aegis’ colours mostly because it enables him to blend in with the actual Guardians during any altercations, but also as a sly dig at Aegis

• Due to his choice of words the first few times they interacted, Enigma initially thought Angelus was a misogynist. After seeing him interact with other people, however, she’s since realised that he actually just wanted to offend her

Persephone: Emerging from a portal and walking down the streets of Terran while reflecting on her previous deaths

Mary and Arthur: Welcoming Persephone in while preparing lunch

Alicia: Coming through the door near the end of lunch while apologising for being late again

General Harkrow: Coming through a portal to yell at and attack Persephone for using magic in front of humans - while she is actively holding a griffin back from clawing his eyes out

Sy: Walking in while Persephone is stealing spell tags from Ellegaarde’s room, narrowly missing catching her in the act

Aegis: Hosting a meeting regarding the Drayrise Griffin in the human realm

Anessa, Lazulai and Mullo: Present at the aforementioned meeting

Angelus: Sy and Persephone saw him on the news fighting a stone golem and interacting with adoring crowds afterwards as he boasted about himself

Clay: Reading a book on mortal compulsion in his living room when Persephone enters. He immediately uses her as a test subject for his studies

Corrus: Knocking like Anna from Frozen to get permission to enter his own living room, then encourages Persephone to share why she’s in the afterlife this time

Ellegaarde: Drawing on spell tags for a practical lesson in glyph magic

Kennedy and Connor: Buying cookbooks from their local library because Kennedy has never used a kitchen in her life and Connor has burnt the milk in his cereal on multiple occasions

Is there an actual villain in Byoldervine or just the journey and the creatures?

I’ve got the Guardians and General Harkrow as the main antagonists, though I wouldn’t necessarily call them villains. And to that extent, you can argue that Aegis is an indirect antagonist too

Not every story is suited towards a villain narrative, and you don’t have to shoehorn one in there just for the sake of having one; antagonists are also just fine

But sometimes, it’s easy for a true villain to be hiding in plain sight
