a rough draft 0 thing just to get some words out. a little n/s/fw thanks to harlowe.
Krispin and Cassie are borrowed from @enchanted-lightning-aes
_________
When Harlowe wakes up it's already almost noon. She goes into the kitchen to find Krispin making brunch. It smells like coffee and eggs and bacon and toast.
She slumps into a chair and sighs dreamily. “It smells so good,” she croons. “Can you be, like, my personal chef?”
Krispin laughs nervously. “W-well, I don't mind cooking, especially since... you're letting me stay here. But...”
Harlowe realizes she may have used the wrong choice of words, given his home experience. “Don't worry, I won't make demands,” she tells him. “But, uh... I might ask you for help if I wanna make something nice, you know?”
Krispin nods. He thinks about Cassie and how he would love to cook for her every day. It's just one of the ways he really enjoys showing that he cares about her.
“I get it,” he says. “You want to cook for Crina sometimes?”
“Pfft, no! Why would it have anything to do with her? She gets nothing special from me.” As Harlowe says this, she has a playful smile on her face.
But Krispin isn't sure if she's joking or implying something, so he says, “Don't you... like her?”
Harlowe shrugs and says, “She's alright,” and Krispin gets the sense she'll never say the truth out loud.
“O-oh okay. Because... I was going to take Cassie to get gelato after brunch, at that place with the penguin statue. And... I was going to ask if you wanted to join us and invite Crina along.”
“Oh, you mean the one on [street]. Sure!”
(LATER)
In the afternoon they arrive at the gelateria. They browse through and check out all the flavours, even sampling a few. Krispin and Cassie make their choices quickly. Meanwhile, Harlowe is being a nuisance, asking to try nearly every single flavour in the first two gelato showcases, while Crina watches next to her with embarrassment.
“Harlowe, they're going to think you walked in just for the samples, without intending to buy anything,” Crina says quietly.
“So? They're free, and the point is to try the flavours. I'm not gonna pay for something if I don't know if it's good.” Harlowe currently has eight tiny plastic spoons in her hands (this is after she discarded several others), trying to narrow down the ones she likes most (so far).
Crina sighs. “Please just pick one and tell me if you want it in a cone or cup.”
Harlowe instead tries a few more flavours, some interesting, some she finds weird. She finally turns to Crina and asks, “What flavour should I get?”
Crina folds her arms. “Why are you asking me? You just spent all this time sampling everything and—”
“Okay, okay!” Harlowe replies, laughing. She discreetly puts her hand on the small of Crina's back and gives gentle strokes.
“Well, have you decided?” Crina asks, uncrossing her arms. She removes Harlowe's hand from her back to drop it at their side. At first Harlowe feels a bit slighted, but she realizes Crina is holding onto a few of her fingers. Her way of being discreet, which, if anyone were looking, would clearly not be discreet. At least not visually. Harlowe thinks maybe Crina is too shy to hold her hand, and wonders if she should ask about it later.
She feels lucky though.
“Nope!” Harlowe answers, wide grin on her stupid face. “But I've narrowed it down to espresso with chocolate bark, or almond whiskey.”
“Of course.”
“What do you mean!?” Harlowe asks incredulously. But she knows exactly what Crina is implying.
“Coffee, and alcohol.” Ironically Crina's tone isn't bitter or caustic. It's a playful jab, and she sounds innocent. “Why don't you get one scoop of each?”
“Oooh, yeah, I'll do that! Are you getting yours in a cone?”
“No,” says Crina.
Harlowe smirks. “Of course.”
Once they have made their purchase, they meet up with Krispin and Cassie outside as there are no vacant tables in the gelateria.
Outside, there's hardly any sidewalk to stand on since there are so many other people hanging around with their gelato. Nice warm days are often this busy.
“What flavour did you two get?” Harlowe asks. When she sees that Krispin has his scoop in a waffle bowl, she gapes. “What! They have those!?” she exclaims, then turns to Crina. “Why didn't you tell me?”
Crina scrapes away at her stracciatella and says, in a composed manner, “I didn't trust you'd be able to avoid making a mess.”
“See? She's mean to me,” Harlowe says to Krispin and Cassie, giving them an exaggerated pout. “Wanna try some of mine? Just stick your spoon in it. Before I get it all germy.”
Krispin shakes his head, Cassie also declines.
“I got cookies and cream,” Krispin says.
“Maple,” says Cassie. Hers is in a cup with a cone sticking out.
Harlowe shows off her double-scoop waffle cone, telling them how good it is. Krispin, probably to be polite, gives in and pokes his spoon into the espresso flavour. It's quite nice with the bits of chocolate in it. Cassie tries a bit of the almond whiskey. Meanwhile, Crina is quietly enjoying hers at a snail's pace.
Behind them, a couple vacates a table and Harlowe points to it while looking at Krispin. He says something quietly to Cassie, and the two of them claim the table.
“Aw, look at them. So gross,” Harlowe jokes. “Can we be gross like that?”
Crina seemingly ignores her but then offers Harlowe a spoon of her gelato, which she happily accepts. Harlowe holds out her cone in exchange. Crina struggles a bit to pick up some chocolate bark onto her spoon.
“Just bite it,” Harlowe tells her. And after another failed attempt to get a satisfactory little scoop, she exclaims, “Just use your tongue!”
Crina freezes, catches the glance of an onlooker, and immediately averts her gaze to glare at Harlowe. “Don't say that so loud!” she chides, turning her back towards the crowd.
Harlowe puts at arm around Crina's waist, laughing and swaying, nearly stumbling into her. Her laughter turns into snickering while she licks at the gelato and Crina returns to scraping at her own, blushing. Despite her embarrassment, she is trying her hardest to fight back any sign of amusement.
Meanwhile, Harlowe continues to giggle in-between licks. “I'm an expert,” she says with a stupid grin.
Crina steps on her foot. “Stop.”

When we were on hols recently we spent a day in the Italian town of Ventimiglia. On the way to the train station to go back to where we were staying, I wanted gelato. We stopped at a crowded place but it turned out to have a whole upstairs room with table service.
I have encountered affogato in the context of coffee purists in Australia and the US being Very Serious about a shot of excellent espresso over artisanal vanilla ice cream. Which is certainly delicious. But thanks to this little gelateria my eyes have been opened.
Affogato can be anything you want and also come with a little umbrella.
This also puts the Australian “ice coffee” beverage into context. It is coffee syrup, milk, ice cream and whipped cream. I’d almost bet it showed up in Italian milk bars in Melbourne and Sydney during the post-war immigration.

Day 11
Rise and shine! Today we got up bright and early to hike across Cinque Terre. A morning espresso, 1.5 plums and half an orange later we were on our way!
We began by taking the train to Monterosso Al Mare, the town furthest north. Initially we viewed some of the landmarks (Neptune below), but not for long because we needed to get moving!
The trail led us to the town of Vernazza. An elevated trek combined with humidity made this first hike absolutely brutal (for Joe at least). One set of stairs left Joe hunched on his knees, nearly spewing dinner from the night before. After two hours of Dante’s inferno, the beauty of Vernazza was upon us 🤩
The town of Vernazza was stunning and the water was the most enticing. However, exhausted, and running on plums, Austin beelined for the first Focacciarria she found. It’s hard to say if this was the best meal of the trip because of the expertly crafted focaccia, or because the workout left us with no choice but to ravish anything in our sights. We found a fountain to refill our water bottles, and whole Joe refilled, a Husky approached to take a sip as well and locked Joe’s bottle. This did not stop him from using out though 😅
Carbed up and ready to go! The second and final hike continues to Corniglia. While also tough and hot, the worst was behind us. And upon arrival, we celebrated with a victorious gelateria!

Corso Italia is a neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, situated on St. Clair Avenue West, between Westmount Avenue (just east of Dufferin Street) and Lansdowne Avenue. It is contained within the larger city-recognized neighborhood of Corso Italia-Davenport.
The neighborhood includes numerous cafés, clothing shops, shoe stores, restaurants, and food markets, as well as several gelaterias and bakeries. Pizza e Pazzi
Not only is our custom-built brick wood-burning oven guaranteeing every pizza comes out mouth-watering, but our homemade pasta prepared for you by the owner and the skilled chef of twenty years is bound to leave you unable to put down your utensils until every bite is finished. But why take our word for it? We invite you to test this for yourself and join us for lunch or dinner at Pizza e Pazzi.
The term “pizza” first appeared in Latin text dating from 997 AD. A dish of the poor people sold in the streets of Medieval Naples, pizza was not considered a kitchen recipe until the 18th century. Legend has it that King Ferdinand of Naples and the Two Sicilies disguised himself as a commoner and visited a poor neighbourhood in Naples “to sink his teeth into a food that the Queen had banned from the royal court”. Authentic Neapolitan Pizza is a thing of beauty designed to delight with every bite. Like an insatiable desire to rip it to pieces in a fit of passion you won’t stop until you’ve devoured it.
Its ingredients consist of a palette of delirious flavours. The tart like tinge of the San Marzano tomatoes add a sweet quality to the soft, blistered, flame-licked bed of dough. It is then topped with any and all of your chosen delights to create a work of art for your consumption.
Frank’s Pizza House - Corso Italia

Escape to the Sweet Life/ A Day at Loews Portfino Bay Hotel
Loews Portofino Bay Hotel gives guests the perfect way to experience Universal Orlando Resort by mixing peace and relaxation with the thrills and let-loose fun of three amazing theme parks.
If you'll be staying at this Italian seaside escape-from-reality, here are some tips and tricks for a rest day to take a break from the adrenaline and strike that perfect balance on your Universal Vacation with an easy, rejuvenating day.
Morning
I enjoy sleeping in on vacations (and in life), but if you've got the workout bug, head over to the full-service fitness center. For a more scenic athletic start to your day, you can take a job through the dedicated garden path around the hotel.
Grab some breakfast and coffee at Trattoria del Porto. With an array of menu options from Quick & Simple to smoked Salmon and Garden & Farm Strada, you're sure to find something everyone will enjoy including authentic Italian-Style espresso and cappuccinos. Grab a table outside because nothing beats looking over the view of the Habor Piazza.
The Ultimate in Relaxation
Unique to Loews Portino Bay Hotel across the line of eight amazing Universal Orlando resort hotels is the Mandra Spa. If I get asked for one thing every year for birthdays from my significant other, it's a day at the spa, and let me tell you Mandara delivers. They have a relaxation lounge where we enjoy sipping champagne in bathrobes before we head to the couple rooms for fantastic massages to soothe those theme-park stretched muscles. And then of course we cap it all off with soaking in the hydrotherapy pool or roasting in the sauna.
DID YOU KNOW: For your theme-park days, your stay at Portofino Bay not only includes Early Park Admission but Universal Express Unlimitied. These are your ultimate tools to experience the theme parks like royalty. On the days you're heading to the parks, wake up early and take the dedicated walking path right up to the gate of either Universal Studios Florida or Universal's Island of Adventure.
Afternoon
Check out Sal's Market Deli for lunch. It's quaint with menu options such as garlic bread sticks, classic Italian sandwiches and of course a variety of great pizza. I also enjoy soaking in the calm and inviting atmosphere while looking around the shop at all the Italian market inspired decor. They also have a kid's menu and plenty of dessert options like cheesecake and tiramisu.
After lunch, I recommend heading over to the Villa Pool for some relaxation of the three pools at the hotel, Villa offers the most luxurious amenities, including private cabana rentals.
If you want more isolation, through the Hillside Pool is located at the far end of the east wing. There is no bar or restaurant there, but you can always grab a drink to go from one of the venues at the hotel beforehand. I personally recommend this as a way to make the most of your "escape day."
Of course, you can always grab lunch at Splendido Bar & Grille and then have fun at the more lively of pool options, Beach Pool, which has a water slide and children's pool.
FUN FACT: Traveling during the cooler months? No worries, the pools at all Universal Orlando Hotels are heated.
The afternoon is a great time to explore some and see everything Portofino Bay has to offer. There's bocce ball courts and a game room, or you can stroll through the courtyards and admire the artwork throughout the hotel while snacking on some biscotti or homemade gelato from the Gelateria.
Evening
Portofino Bay has the most dining outlets than any other hotel on property.
Mama Della's Ristorante is a must-do for anyone looking to enjoy a fine meal. I love listening to the strolling musicians throughout the restaurant, and of course this is any pasta-lover's dream dining establishment.
Though I have to say, dining at Bice on the balcony overlooking the water as the sun sets may just be a pinnacle of your relaxing day. Both restaurants offer kind and amazing service as well as great food sleections, so you really cant go wrong here.
After dinner, grab a drink from Thirsty Fish and listen to Musica Della Note outside around the plaza. If you're not able to recite Italian opera in full by the time you leave, you've done this day wrong (kidding, but it would be in your head!).
Or, if you're staying in a room with a balcony, order room service (available 24-hours a day) and open the doors and let the music flow through.
DID YOU KNOW: If you're a wine lover, Harbor Nights is the even for you and offered at select times throughout the year. There's wonderful live jazz music that provides a great, calming atmosphere.
youtube
Universal Orlando Resort provides the ultimate in awesome and let-loose fun for everyone, and when you stay at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, you'll be able to balance your thrills with absolute relaxion and bliss.

I stepped off the trolley in downtown San Diego and made my way onto India Street, feeling the rush of the city around me. Walking down this historic street, my senses were immediately awoken by the vibrant colors, fragrant smells, and energetic sounds that surrounded me as I entered this amazing city’s Little Italy neighborhood. The sun was high in the sky, casting a warm glow on the bustling street, which was alive with the energy of locals and tourists alike, it was as if I had entered another world entirely. The aromas of freshly baked bread, simmering sauces, and roasted espresso beans wafted through the air, beckoning me to explore further as people wandered up and down this breathtaking street taking in the sights and sounds of the packed cafes, gelaterias and trattorias. Leighton smiled back at Danielle, her excitement matching her friend's. "Oh, Florence! The city of love and art," she said dreamily. "I can already imagine us walking through the narrow streets, sipping on espresso, and getting lost in the beauty of the Renaissance." When Pete's name came up in their conversation, Leighton couldn't help but laugh. "I know, it's hard to believe we were lucky enough to get the group date," she confessed. "Can I tell you a secret? When Fall Out Boy first came out, I had the biggest crush on Pete. It's a little strange now, considering how long ago that crush faded." She laughed. She looked at the itinerary in her hand, her finger tracing the lines. "According to this, there's a hidden gem of a gelateria near the Ponte Vecchio. They say their pistachio gelato is absolutely amazing. We'll have to try every flavor they have," Leighton chuckled. "What would you like to do first?"
Danielle's been to Italy a handful of times, and each time she's been here - she's been just as excited as she was the first time. She had many happy places around the world, but Italy would forever be one of her favorites. "I'm right there with you." Danielle agrees with a hum, looking out to the city before them, "Well I know that Florence is definitely in the cards." She shot a smile to Leighton, "Seems we have a little day date there with Pete."

[piofiore no banshou] vol. 6: dante - track three
3; non vedo l'ora
masterpost
✿
[00:07] Are… these seats okay?
What are you going to order?
Take your time.
I’m glad we came while it’s empty.
Apparently it’s always packed in the morning.
That’s right. We haven’t been to a bar together for ages.
Was the last time when we went in Venice last year?
I’ve been trying not to go unless somebody invites me.
If the Falzone capo entered a bar without warning, none of the customers would be able to enjoy themselves.
Especially not if they live somewhere controlled by one of the other organisations.
But now, the entire city is under Falzone control.
It isn’t like the entirety of the Visconti mafia disappeared, but…
We have a pleasant relationship.
There are still Chinese people in Vereno but Lao-Shu isn’t operating any longer.
Considering everything, it’s even more of a statement when I walk proudly around town.
Including when you’re involved.
But I’m not doing anything shady.
And we would never hurt a citizen without good reason; we have more pride than that.
I used to think it was important that people feared me because I was a member of the mafia.
I thought I had to look down on people and so put on quite the front.
But now I know that binding people through fear will never end well.
[01:52] So… I realised I don’t just want to be feared, but respected too.
Well, I don’t think it’d suit me if I tried to act like Gilbert.
Ah, did you decide what you’re having?
Got it.
An espresso and a latte.
And a cherry filled pasticciotto, please.
Yes, I did want to stop putting on a front…
But that’s different.
I thought I should order espresso when I’m in front of people…
I should still protect even just a fraction of my image.
There are steps to it.
One day, I want to be able to buy and eat sweets in public.
Like when we ate gelato on holiday.
The truth is…
I’ve never been to a gelateria in Burlone.
Nicola used to tell me about how he bought gelato for Leo, but I pretended not to care.
I’m sure Nicola knew the truth, though.
He’s asked me before if I wanted him to buy me any.
I said I didn’t need any, though.
Oh, also, I want to go see a movie.
We can’t do that at the mansion.
When we talk like this I always realise how much I don’t know and how much I still want to do.
Will you join me?
I knew I could count on you.
I can’t wait.
Grazie.
I don’t need sugar.
You use it.
In my cup too…?!
I’m sorry…
[04:14] I thought this might be the case but…
Putting sugar in espresso really does nothing at all.
It’s too bitter, the sugar doesn’t help in the slightest.
I understand that some people like it.
I mean, Nicola drinks it every day.
No, it’s fine.
You have the cake, please.
It’ll get the taste out of my mouth…
But I can’t do that here.
[04:48] I suppose no one is looking right now.
Okay…
Ahhh.
It’s quite hot.
But it’s really good.
The cherry syrup is a great addition.
Thankfully, the bitterness in my mouth is gone now.
But it doesn’t hold a candle to your dolce.
Let me think…
I love your crostata and your cannoli, but…
If I had to pick just one, it’d be your torta caprese.
You make it for me all the time but I never get tired of eating it.
If you don’t mind, I’d like it if you could make me another after the ceremony, when things are quiet again.
Oh, it’s nothing.
I just got a bit excited.
Let’s go on another date like this, after the wedding.
Like a normal couple.
When we’re done here, should we walk along the coast to the church?
It might be nice to take a detour every once in a while.
✿
[06:15] That’s right.
About the honeymoon…
You said you wanted to go to the Côte d'Azur, didn’t you?
It’s really popular so there’ll be a lot of tourists there during vacation season.
I want to book our hotels soon.
Let’s talk about it later.
Long journeys are quite tiring so I thought about maybe spending the first day in Monaco.
It’s right next to the Italian border, after all.
What do you think?
I’m glad.
It’s really famous for its casinos and I heard the buildings were designed by the same person who made the Paris opera house.
We can’t gamble but we can still look at it from the outside.
Then we can spend some time in Nice.
If there’s any other cities you want to visit, we can stay there too.
I’ve never been to the Côte d'Azur either.
But I’ve heard stories about it.
Apparently famous artists like Renoir loved it.
The weather in summer is bright and clear and the deep blue coast is beautiful.
Some famous bankers built a rose-pink house there over a period of 7 years.
We could also go to Marseilles.
I think you’ll enjoy the markets there.
It’s famous for bouillabaisse and ratatouille but I don’t really know the difference between ratatouille and caponata.
If we want to see the sights, we can visit the Fort of St. Nicholas from “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
The inspiration for the Man in the Iron Mask from the D'Artagnan saga is also nearby.
What do I want to do…?
Hm, well…
I want to go somewhere you’ll enjoy.
I want to grant every wish of yours, no matter how trivial.
And anywhere I go will be fun, if I’m going with you.
I’m happy just to have you by my side.
That’s why I’m so excited about the wedding but also heavy-hearted.
I know it’s tradition for us to spend time apart before the ceremony…
But I already know I won’t be able to relax while we’re apart, even if it’s only for a day.
It’s not funny.
I’m genuinely worried about it.
I guess I have no choice but to grin and bear it.
The Sisters are busy enough as it is.
But they were happy to accept our request and make preparations.
I should be more grateful.
✿
[09:14] Did we take too long?
I hoped to be here a bit earlier, but…
The evening sun is so beautiful.
Almost as beautiful as when I proposed to you in Venice.
I always think about my childhood when I come here.
Obviously, I think about my mother and father…
But also about how I used to look for you during mass.
I’m happy that you’re interested but I don’t have many interesting memories to share with you.
I was a weak child so I didn’t often get the chance to go outside.
Especially not after I was kidnapped.
Oh, I didn’t tell you, did I?
It was around the time Visconti were coming into power and the families were all in disorder.
Nicola was taken too.
Luckily, we both made it home safely.
I don’t really remember it, in truth.
Anyway, both that and the influence of the Great War meant it was deemed too dangerous for important members of the Falzone Family to go outside.
I didn’t go to school either; I had a private tutor.
I started to go outside less and less.
It was so boring.
Eventually, I grew busy learning how to be capo and saw you even less as a result…
A lot happened after my father died too.
It was only in the past few years that I was able to visit the church regularly again.
So when I saw you again for the first time…
I felt a bit lonely.
You still looked familiar but you’d changed a lot–.
No, you’d become much more beautiful.
It felt like you were even further out of my reach than before.
Not that we were ever really close.
You’re right.
That’s different now.
Look how close we are.
I can even hold your hand.
Let’s visit the church before we see the Sisters.
✿
[12:05] This church is full of memories.
It’s a special place for us.
That night, when I held my hand out to you here, was over a year and a half ago.
I could find a hundred excuses for it.
But I don’t think that feeling was a logical one.
Do you remember what I said to you here?
The more I see you smile, the more I want you to laugh.
I want to make you happy, from the bottom of my heart.
My feelings haven’t changed and they never will.
Even if we get married and become a couple, the nature of our relationship changes…
I’ll still be in love with you.
Even if we’re faced with hardships once more…
I know that we’ll be able to overcome them together.
In happy times and difficult ones…
In sickness and in health…
I swear to cherish and love you for the rest of my life.
I adore you.
From the bottom of my heart.
