Chromatography Resins Market is driving Separation and Purification Processes
Chromatography resins help separate and purify biomolecules and are used extensively in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical separation processes. Chromatography resins are polymer beads that facilitate the separation, purification, and quantification of biomolecules like proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, and small molecules. The beads contain ligands that bind selectively to biomolecules based on their chemical or physical properties. Based on the ligand used, chromatography resins are available in different variants like ion-exchange resins, affinity resins, hydrophobic interaction resins, size-exclusion resins. When a sample mixture passes through the chromatography resin column, different biomolecules bind to the resin with varying affinity based on their characteristics and get separated. Pure components can then be collected by changing the conditions like pH or introducing an elution buffer. The Global Chromatography Resins Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 2.2 Billion in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 6.7% over the forecast period 2024-2027.
Rapid growth in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and increasing research on drug discovery and large molecule biosimilars have boosted the demand for effective separation techniques. Chromatography resins have become integral to the purification of antibodies, vaccines, hormones, enzymes, and other therapeutic proteins. Key Takeaways Key players operating in the chromatography resins market are Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., WR Grace & Co., Merck KGaA, Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc., Tosoh Corporation, and Purolite Corporation. The booming biopharmaceutical industry is driving consistent demand for chromatography resins for large-scale downstream processing applications. This is an older post but I come to preach the gospels of studio safety!
The answer is: No, you cannot die from oil paint inhalation. Oil paints themselves are just pigment + oil (usually linseed, but can be others like safflower) and sometimes binder or extender.
Regular oil paints can still have toxic pigments, but their toxicity as paints is entirely about skin contact or ingestion. Meaning you ought to wear gloves (and a skin barrier lotion can also help!). Oil paints may have various heavy metals that are (at best) skin irritants, and with repeated and prolonged exposure, harmful to you.
The most toxic oil paints are easily replaced with less toxic synthetic pigments - Flake White (made using Lead), and Genuine Vermillion (mercuric sulfide - mercury) have cheaper replacements. More common colors may use cobalt, nickel, copper, chromiums, and cadmiums. Some are more easily replaced than others (cadmium free colors, for example!).
However, you will be safe if you wear gloves or skin barriers, don't eat paint and don't put it in the water supply. In terms of lung irritants, repeated/extensive exposure to acrylic paint fumes is probably more of an issue than straight oil paint. (Latex house paints are definitely toxic to breathe.) Artist acrylic paints may still release formaldehyde, ammonia, and other toxic fumes which may irritate your lungs over time — oil paints do not.
HOWEVER:
1) Linseed oil (in many oil paints, and as a medium) can make rags that are bunched up flammable. As in, spontaneously combusting flammable! Always lay your rags flat to dry out!
2) the toxic odors found in oil painting are not from the paints themselves (unless you're using fast dry/alkyd oil paints).
The following things used in oil painting are toxic to inhale, irritating to the lungs, or very toxic/irritating to the skin:
Turpentine
Solvents (including Odorless Mineral Solvents like Gamsol and Turpenoid, and "natural" solvents like Citrusolve/citrus turpentine/orange solvent or zest-it).
Spike of Lavender Oil, Spike Oil
Almost anything including an Alkyd resin (including Gamblin's Non-solvent mediums).
Mediums or varnishes which use some kind of acrylic.
Fixatives and Varnishes - especially resins.
You should only use these in a well ventilated area, and most of the time you should wear a mask if you have extended exposure. When varnishing, the painting itself will continue to emit fumes while drying off.
Having a low or no toxic odor oil painting practice is still possible!
You have options:
Use water miscible/mixable oil paints, and use water to thin the paints.
With traditional oil paints, don't use turps at all.
If you use a traditional solvent, make it Gamsol or Turpenoid and use it sparingly. keep it closed when not in use! These are low-odor (OMS). This is still toxic, it's just *less* toxic.
If you want to do away with solvent entirely for thinning traditional oil paints: go to Natural Pigment's website and buy the Rublev Oleogel medium. It's a clear silica gel (like the kind in those "do not eat" packets!) mixed with linseed oil, and will thin (increase transparency and slip)/extend your colors without changing the paint hue.
Alternatively: you can mix marble dust (transparent calcite) and linseed oil to form a paste medium, but you definitely need a mask and air filtration (if indoors) due to the dust when mixing. This idea is from the safety book The New Oil Painting. Self mixing provides the greatest control over how much transparency vs ropiness/thickening you get from this medium, but you can also buy Rublev's pre-made Velasquez Medium.
When painting Alla prima or painting in limited layers, simply use straight oil to thin the paint.
More: ventilation in studios for safety on Muddy Colors.
More studio safety for oils, and GYST Health and Safety for artists.
Ok acrylic underpainting seems to be a popular guy amongst them. And also getting alot of "for your safety do oil paint in a well ventilated area" which gives me the idea that you can Die from oil paint inhalation. Is this a real thing???

Many traditional Arts & Crafts need PPE to protect your long-term health and safety. Always research your materials safety precautions.
The most common precautions are wearing a skin protective barrier lotion and lightweight gloves/single finger dams, a mask (make sure you're wearing ones meant for particulates or fumes, depending on material you work with!), and an apron or smock. Some materials will also require protective eyewear, heavier gloves, close toed shoes, and/or air filtration systems.
Things you need some kind of PPE for:
Pastels of any kind: if it makes dust, mask up. Wear gloves. Repeated skin exposure or inhalation of particulates is the problem with many toxic colors! (trust me, the mask is so you're not sneezing color and inhaling heavy metal dust from certain colors.)
Oil painting. While you CAN go entirely solvent free (check out the book The New Oil Painting!!), you should still glove up, because repeated skin exposure of toxic paints is bad for you. I've been taking art classes for no-credit at the local art school and we work in a big ventilated room, and absolutely cannot use turpentine. We can use OMS (odorless mineral spirits) which are still toxic. Most everyone keeps their OMS totally covered. I use gamsol very sparingly — mostly I am using rublev's Oleogel (which is basically silica gel and linseed oil, and creates transparency without muting color), and Velasquez medium (also solvent free, and thickens paint.) If you are solvent free, the main issue is skin absorption.
Acrylic or latex paint: also has fumes to consider and similarly you should avoid getting it on your skin.
Watercolors and gouache: probably the "safest" painting medium since you are inherently diluting everything. Don't bathe in or ingest the paint water (this goes for all paints). Still, I've seen indie watercolor companies sell like...paints made from lead (ehhhh) and mercury and for the love of God: don't buy that. Don't use that. You do not need Genuine Cinnabar watercolor paint. Cinnabar (aka Vermillion, AKA PR106) is Mercuric Sulfide. It's an extremely toxic heavy metal, is very expensive, and as a watercolor, is also highly fugitive. Which means it loses its color when exposed to light very quickly. (It goes from a bright/bold red-orange to a dingey red brown).
Do not varnish or fix anything without proper PPE and check to see if it's even necessary! (Graphite-only drawings can be fixed with a skim milk spray. Look it up! No need for toxic spray.)
Sealants, stains, fixatives, expoxies, enamels, and resins all need PPE.
If it makes dust or crushes something to pieces or powders, or shreds and makes fiber dust, you need PPE. If you're sanding, carving, or milling, you need PPE.
If it gets very hot or there is molten liquid or a liquid becomes a solid due to chemical processes you need PPE. If it's involving welding, melting, or sawing, you need PPE.
If you have a funny little headache or your chest feels tight after doing something, wear PPE next time.
Are you fine not wearing a mask and gloves to use wax crayons, colored pencils, and pencils? Absolutely.
What about charcoal? Well you probably won't die from it, but consider this: charcoal is literally charred and compressed wood, and inhaling smoke isn't good for you. So inhaling a lot of burnt wood dust (charcoal) is probably also bad for you over a long period of time.
Put a mask on and stop sneezing black dust.
For more, take a look at Get Your Shit Together: Health and Safety Issues for Artists, and search "studio safety," and you'll get plenty of guides for various activities.
There's no way for us to know if Bob Ross died of Lymphoma because he smoked cigarettes, or because he painted constantly using solvents and thinners. Practice safety.
I spend a lot of time worried about how many craft/fine arts people fail to use appropriate safety precautions for. Especially with small businesses and the popularity of expoxies/resins, I'm always kinda worried that folks aren't wearing PPE.

Drilling Chemicals: Ensuring Safety and Efficiency Latest Advancements in Oil & Gas Operations
Tumblr media
Drilling fluids, also known as drilling muds, play a pivotal role in rotary drilling operations by performing important functions such as removing cuttings from the wellbore, cooling and lubricating the drill bit, maintaining well pressure control and protecting potential productive formations against damage. The most commonly used drilling fluids are water-based muds (WBM), oil-based muds (OBM) and synthetic-based muds (SBM). Each type of mud is engineered using a carefully selected blend of chemicals to attain the desired physical properties needed for effective well control and optimum drilling performance. Chemical Components of Drilling Chemicals Drilling Chemicals muds derive their essential characteristics from the variety of soluble and insoluble chemical additives that are incorporated. Weighting agents like barite are added to control and maintain downhole pressure. Dispersants such as lignite and lignosulfonates help suspend the drilled cuttings in the circulated mud. Viscosifiers including bentonite clay and polymers create sufficient viscosity and gel structure needed to lift cuttings to the surface. Surfactants are added to reduce mud-solid interactions and improve shale inhibition. Fluid loss control agents prevent the loss of mud into the formation pore spaces. Biocides eliminate bacteria growth that can degrade the mud. Other important additives are pH control agents, lubricants, defoamers and corrosion inhibitors. Application of Drilling Chemicals The precise formulation of drilling muds depends greatly on the geological conditions expected in the well. For example, WBMs tend to be preferred for shallow water and inland areas where toxicity and environmental concerns are less stringent. They are cheaper and simpler to formulate but have lower performance compared to SBMs or OBMs. OBMs, apart from providing excellent lubricity, are suitable for drilling salt sections and highly-reactive shales. However, their use entails challenging environmental management and oil spill contingency planning. SBMs bridge the gap by offering enhanced shale inhibition and lubricity at lower costs relative to OBMs. They use synthetic solids and high performance additives to achieve properties on par with expensive OBMs. Shale Inhibition Challenges One of the major headaches faced while drilling is shale instability, which can easily lead to wellbore collapse, stuck pipe or lost circulation episodes. Maintaining wellbore integrity in shale formations requires drilling fluids formulated specially to arrest fluid invasion and suppress clay hydration/swelling. However, inhibiting reactive shales chemically without damaging drilling operations or formations remains an ongoing challenge. Mud chemists closely monitor filtration rates and rheology changes to ensure the protective filter cake deposited inside the wellbore does not penetrate deep into the formation. High performance shale inhibitors based on potassium/ammonium salts, lignite dispersants or resinous polymers have revolutionized shale drilling over the last decade. Solids Control is Critical An effective solids control system is indispensable for recycling drilling fluids after removing drilled cuttings. Cutting accumulation increases viscosity and density, reduces fluid properties and transportation abilities. Common solids control equipment in use include shakers, centrifuges, mud cleaners and dryers. Chemical conditioning aids like flocculants improve the effectiveness of these systems. Drilling fluid maintenance through monitoring, testing and chemical adjustments protects the drilled hole conditions as well as drilling fluid performance throughout the well. Proper disposal of mud and cuttings residues as per local environmental regulations is also essential.
