Painting research:
These three paintings inspire me as I love the the expressive styles and the use of lighting in them.

Conversation with Portrait and Figurative Artist, Natalie Campbell
Tumblr media
I recently had the distinct pleasure of visiting with the lovely and talented “Scouted Artist” Natalie Campbell (along with her adorable son, Wyatt).  We spoke about mother-hood and family and her journey as a professional Portrait and Figurative Artist.
Natalie’s passion for art developed at a very early age.  She comes from six generations of Fort Worth natives with outstanding artists on both sides of her family.  Here are a few highlights from our visit:
What made you interested in art?
I’ve always said - “I want to be an artist when I grow up”.  It was my mother that encouraged me to follow my passion very early on. I grew up painting with her every day.  I feel so fortunate to have found my calling in life. I have every confidence that I am doing exactly what I am meant to do.
Tell us about the artists in your family.
There are lots of gifted individuals in my family - each with distinct styles of artistic talent. My mother has natural ability and is extremely creative, yet very modest.  She does not practice professionally. My sister is currently attending art school in California.  Her style of work is abstract and “trippy” but thoughtful, extraordinary, and wonderful. My Great-Grandmother, Jewel Brannon Parker is known for her iconic Cowgirl “pin-up” Illustrations.

My Paternal Grandmother is a brilliant Landscape Artist, but does not practice professionally.  I have a wonderful family legacy.
Who has influenced you most along the way (other than your mother)?
I had the pleasure of studying under nationally renowned artist, Gavin Glakas, for many years while growing up in Washington DC.  He has won numerous honors for his work including awards from the Portrait Society of America and the Butler Institute of American Art.  His paintings hang in the United States Capitol, the House of Representatives’ Armed Forces, Georgetown University, as well as numerous private collections across the world.
I studied at Glen Echo Park in Washington DC and also spent time studying in Florence, Italy.  Upon graduating from TCU, and after starting a family, I felt “called” to start painting for my career.
Tell us about your creative process.
I love to paint children and people.  Ideally, I will meet with the family (or individual) in person and take lots of photos.  It is wonderful to see their distinctive personalities and make sure I am capturing the vision for the project.  Often times, I will show the parents the face (s) before completing the details of the clothing to be sure we are right on track.

When painting adult portraits, I will ideally have the subject sit for a few hours while I get started and also take lots of pictures for reference.

I also paint commissioned pet portraits.

Project completion can range from 1 week to 1 month, depending on scale and size.
What projects are you working on currently?
I have recently been commissioned to paint the portrait of Nenetta Burton Carter, Co-Founder of Fort Worth’s Jewel Charity Ball.  The piece will hang in the Jewel Charity office alongside the portrait of other Co-Founder, Billie Bransford Clark.  This is a huge honor for me.  I also have a few children’s portraits in the works.

What is your favorite activity to do in Fort Worth?
Mostly we love to be in family-friendly environments, especially with our 2-year old son and baby girl on the way.  The Kimbell Art Museum “playroom” is a wonderful activity for family and/or friends.  It is a perfect location for a playdate with other moms.
