Blue Cranes - Voices - jazz quintet collaborates with singers on new album
Portland jazz ensemble Blue Cranes has long established itself as a forward-thinking entity. The quintet, made up of Reed Wallsmith on alto saxophone, Joe Cunningham on tenor saxophone, Rebecca Sanborn on keyboards, Jon Shaw on bass, and Ji Tanzer on drums, is steeped in the history and sound of the artists that came before them, but too curious and creative to simply replicate the past. Blue Cranes wants to explore.
A key aspect of Voices is how Blue Cranes were able to blend elements of improvisation into the songwriting process and the structures of these songs. Opening track “Brave Little Girl” was created entirely in the moment, including singer Holland Andrews extemporizing their vocal turn using key phrases plucked from a poem by Nico Alvarado. And the song “Ursula” was built around stream-of-consciousness singing from Laura Gibson. She initially sang some lines as a reaction to a bounding saxophone melody from Cunningham and Wallsmith, and then the group created an entirely new song structure to match Gibson’s vocals, pulling in The Devil Makes Three’s Cooper McBean on banjo. The resulting combination is intoxicating and spiritually uplifting. In and around all of these rich mixes by Grammy award-winning producer/jazz bassist Todd Sickafoose is broken beat noir featuring Nils Frahm collaborator Peter Broderick; a touch of neo-soul anchored by the croon of Redray Frazier with the fluid rhythms of Blue Cranes’ Ji Tanzer and Jon Shaw; the four-part harmonies of looping artist Gavin Castleton careening into John Zorn-esque instrumental explosions; and a nostalgic tale by Black Prairie’s Annalisa Tornfelt featuring mournful string arrangements.

90 East by Gavin Castleton
youtube
Video description:
A live, single take, looped performance of the song 90 East by Gavin Castleton. Footage is black and white, grainy, and shot with multiple handheld cameras, which move frenetically in the space and focus on Gavin and his musical equipment. Gavin is at a table with multiple synths and electric pianos and audio equipment. The space is unspecific, wooden floors with a rug where Gavin performs, brick walls, a pair of potted plants in the window over Gavin’s shoulder.
Gavin begins, recording loops. A beatbox pattern. A piano pattern that walks somberly downward. A toy piano’s staccato. A pair of vocal harmonies. We see him trigger the looper with his foot between patterns.
Gavin adjusts the mix, standing up and increasing the low end, and the volume of the harmonies. He checks the mic.
As he begins the lyrics, the video changes to burned out color, cutting more rapidly and following Gavin’s performance at the table.
Gavin performs.
Lyrics:
After a show one night
I drove five hours to the next town
All dark highway in front of me
My headlights
Two lances breaking through upstate New York
Everything that was quiet during the show was beginning to make its voice heard:
Hot sweat to cold.
Loose neck to stiff.
Contention to bitterness.
Sensibility to the absurd.
I whitewashed every word.
Only an overload of frustration could have kept me awake that long,
I could’ve either
turned us into traffic or
I coulda turned this into a song.
And I was bearing down on the road,
With two fists high up on the wheel,
Bitching out everybody in my head
Bitterness caking over bitterness
Unsalvageable soured career
Focusing in the sober night stare.
In such a bad Hollywood way
The pitch black I was ripping through
Was so obviously a metaphor for despair.
I started thinking I’d be a driver for life.
I’d learn to steer in my sleep.
All the fuel pumps in all the truck stops on all the highways would whisper my name.
Me,
Crosser of Double Yellow Lines,
Liberator of Two Lanes.
Had my thoughts been typed out
They would have read like the minutes of a Tourette’s convention.
My passengers
Wouldn’t be sleeping so soundly
If they knew what kind of thoughts were banging around in the front seat.
I was taking offense at the slightest bathroom stop.
I had all my captors profiled and mapped out.
Nobody could surprise me.
Anything anyone did the were predestined to do,
Nothing shocking
Nothing new.
This was 90 East and we were far from home.
It was the most dangerous way to travel.
After a show
With your best friends asleep
And nothing but surrender and yellow lines to keep you company
I searched the cell phone for long distance relief:
“What’s the number for the Dysfunctional Band Hotline?”
“Is this what an abused wife sounds like when she won’t leave her man?”
Redundant.
Relapse-ical.
Hollow.
Resolved.
My girl was outta town
I couldn’t get a softy on the phone
So I camped out on the bus.
I wished everybody would leave me alone.
Wished somebody woulda asked me what was wrong.
Sometimes what is actually an attempt
To spread the grief thin
Will appear to be an effort
To bring a crowd in,
Of course I don’t have enough friends to make my grief sound minuscule
And I’m not in an emo band so I can’t make whining sound cool, but
My girl’s good about it
She lets me complain
Retell the same frustrations manifesting in different situations
Over and over
I have enough torment for the both of us.
It’s some skewed, sexist relationship;
Instead of bacon I provide chafing.
Only an Angel
Would open the door to let an earthquake in.
Only an earthquake would expect the world to listen.
As the lyrics finish, the video fades back to black and white, Gavin sits back at the electric piano. He plays and harmonizes over the looping pattern that has been repeating the entire time. The cuts in footage slow down and layer as the song fades. As the song fades down, the color fades back into the footage and we hear the rhythmic sound of the keys being played in the space.
End video description.

These are times of ever rising temperature. Seems like everyone wants change, in some form or another, right now, but we can’t seem to agree on how to break the fever, or what causes it (or if it even exists). Do we sweat it out? Do we ice it down? I don’t know. I always thought of this song as journalistic—the observation of something so spiritually foul that the mind rejects it, rendering only a still life of something distant and natural. I share that alien perspective when I watch the endless parade of murder footage in my feeds, and the unfathomable acquittals that always follow. “This is not my beautiful house. How did I get here? My God! What have I done?” I feel sick with powerlessness… sicker still when I comprehend the far greater magnitude of powerlessness that the victims must have felt in that brief broadcasted moment of mortal injustice. We can do so much better.
