Notes:
Perfect capture of this incredible new tour! Lots of nice closeups and lots of wideshots to show the new staging and lighting! Sometimes the right side of the stage gets covered with lights and can obstruct faces but its always minuscule. Some washout, shakiness and readjusting throughout.

you're having a party, which presidents are you inviting?
Tumblr media
Good question, very fun. I'll invite all of the ones I like, and whichever ones I'd like to see in a party setting.
James Madison is chronologically the first that I would invite. I think it'd be funny to see him at a party. I think of "nearly gets trampled on the dance floor..." I, myself, will trample him unless he brings Dolley.
Jackson is invited and I hope he leaves cheese around the house in secret spots like he did at the end of his presidency.
Van Buren is invited unless @presidenttyler continues to insist that I have to marry him or he'll summon a deadly fog (please die, Mr. Tyler.)
I would invite William Henry Harrison, but tragically, as I'm sure we've all heard, he is no longer with us </3.
John Tyler is invited unless he tries to insist I marry Martin Van Buren lest a deadly fog be summoned. Also I swear to God he's not allowed to use my bathroom. I hope he and Jackson start fighting (no weapons allowed in my house) and I get to see their skinny bones fall out.
James K Polk is invited. I want him to bring his Lady Presidentress as well. Double invited if he is the presidentress.
Zachary Taylor is invited. His daughter can come too. His daughter's husband cannot come. His daughter's husband's dog, Bonin, can come. The murderer who shares a name with Zachary Taylor's daughter's husband's dog cannot come.
Millard Fillmore is invited. He can bring the whole boiler room with him. It wouldn't be a party without him.
Franklin Pierce is invited, of course. As an old @/deadpresidents posts that I can longer find clarifies, he would indeed be a welcome party guest, even if people on Reddit don't seem to think so (I have beef with 90% of reddit tier lists, save for any of them made by @starlight-tequila.) As I've come to understand, there're no less than 4 fictional interpretations of Pierce where he's being haunted. I request he keeps the haunting at home; I don't want the watchmojo demmons to mess up the vibe.
James Buchanan is invited. I want to see him in his worst outfit, behaving as he did at Dickinson before his expulsion. He needs to bring Harriet too. WRK too, unless I decide that he's also dead.
Andrew Johnson can come because I once saw an image of him smiling.
Ulysses Grant can come. He may play with the non dog animals (unfortunately, they're all just different Martin Van Buren government assigned rodentsonas in a pen.)
As can Hayes. Hayes can bring his wife, Lucy. She actually allowed drinking in the White House on special occasions, so she would not be a party pooper.
Garfield may come, but only as Lucretia's plus one. It's what he deserves. Since Guiteau did so much for Garfield's election (and was basically the president, let's be real, guys) he can come as an honorary president. So can David Rice Atchison, even though that story is complete bs. Dr. Doctor Bliss will be shot on sight by Boston Corbett.
Arthur is invited, but Julia Sand needs to pre-approve everything that he does. Conkling may come as a plus one, but he will go in the pen with the Martin Van Buren government assigned rodentsonas (it's okay, that's where Grant is anyway.)
On no other day would I ever allow Benjamin Harrison and his shortness within my sight, but I just found a song about him and it's stuck in my head, so I think it's only right that he attends 1 single time before my kind feelings toward him dry out.
McKinley is invited. He must sing to me.
Wilson is invited. But I will lock him in a room like a creature. You-know-who gets the key. The second female president, Edith Wilson, may attend.
Warren Harding gets to come. Gaston Means may, as well. Also Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. That's about it. If Nixon were to show up I wouldn't turn him away.
I'd like the party to end by sending an anonymous tip to Carrie A. Nation, telling her there is alcohol. She can come in, destroy everything, and all's well because if everything is destroyed, there's nothing to clean. She and Guiteau can ride into the sunset, combining to be a person of a normal height. I hope they invite me to the wedding.

Pulled the numbers on what colleges were most common for the US/Can actors. This is mostly taken from the Wiki. May be missing some actors/colleges. I generally tried to only count it when an actor actually got a degree in the performing arts, but it's possible that some of these still went to college for something else. I'll probably do this for the UK eventually, too.
5 University of Michigan (Bre Jackson, Storm Lever, Zan Berube, Cydney Clark, Aline Mayagoitia) AMDA (Gabbi Mack, Brittney Mack, Didi Romero, Joy N Woods, Brennyn Lark, Gaby Albo. Leandra Ellis-Gaston also attended AMDA LA, but that's a different program)
4 Cal State - Fullerton (Ellie Wyman, Abigail Sparrow, Lauren Mariasoosay, Taylor Sage Evans) Columbia College (Courtney Mack, Megan Leung, Mallory Maedke, Shantel Cribbs) Sheridan College (Julia Pulo, Elysia Cruz, Hailey Alexis Lewis, Julia McLellan)
3 Belmont (Wesley Carpenter, Sierra Fermin, Carlina Parker) Boston Conservatory at Berklee (Kennedy Monica Carsterns, Gabriela Francesca Carrillo, Aryn Bohannon. Honorary mention of Hien, from the non-replica Hungarian cast) Ithaca College (Olivia Donalson, Sydney Parra, Audrey Fisher) Montclair State University (Gianna Grosso, Amaya White, Kristina Walz) NYU (Gerianne Pérez, Princess Victomé, Guilia Marolda) Penn State (Jasmine Forsberg, Amina Faye, Jessie Davidson) TXST (Bella Coppola, Anna Uzele, Adriana Scalice)
2 Ball State University (Terica Marie, Keirsten Hodgens) Baldwin Wallace University (Keri Rene Fuller, Shelby Griswold) BYU (Emily Rose Lyons, Channing Weir) Emerson College (Kathryn Kilger, Erin Ramirez) Elon University (Ruby Gibbs, Nasia Thomas) Fullerton College (Haley Izurieta, Lauren Mariasoosay) Indiana University (Abby Mueller, Caroline Siegrist) Pace University (Aja Simone Baitey, Aubrey Matalon) Rider University (Casey Esbin, Jessie Bodner) Shenandoah University (Kelsee Kimmel, Willow Dougherty) Temple University (Alana M Robinson, Chelsea Lorraine Wargo)

Beauty & the Bieber (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Continuing their signature style of combining childhood classics with modern music, the PattyCake guys decided to tackle a tale as old as time for their next project. In addition to Justin Bieber's melodies and the musical motifs from the 1991 animated film, they also included elements from the forthcoming 2017 live action remake.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — Beauty and the Bieber
performers: Jamie Fritz (Belle); Earl Elkins, Jr. (Beast); E. Michael Evans (Gaston); Joey D'Angelo-LaJoie (LaFou); Alexander Browne (Lumiere); Brad Pettitt (Prince Adam); Leah Lowman (village girls); Anita Wakim (Enchantress)
original songs / performers: [0:15] "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber; [0:53] "Baby" by Justin Bieber, feat. Ludacris; [1:09] "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber; [1:21] "Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber, feat. Jaden; [2:12] "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber; [2:36] "Company" by Justin Bieber; [3:30] "Beauty and a Beat" by Justin Bieber, feat. Nicki Minaj; [4:10] "Sorry" by Justin Bieber; [4:22] "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake, feat. Justin Bieber; [4:44] "Cold Water" by Major Lazer, feat. Justin Bieber & MØ
written by: "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Theron "Neff-U" Feemster, & Joshua Gudwin; "Baby" by Justin Bieber, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Terius "The-Dream" Nash, Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges, & Christina Milian; "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, & Ed Sheeran; "Never Say Never" by Adam "Messy" Messinger, Nasri Atweh, Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell, Jaden Smith, Omarr Rambert, & Justin Bieber; "Boyfriend" by Mike Posner, Mason Levy, Matthew "Blackbear" Musto, & Justin Bieber; "Company" by Justin Bieber, Andreas Schuller, James Wong, Leroy Clampitt, Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd, James "JHart" Abrahart, & Thomas Troelsen; "Beauty and a Beat" by Max Martin, Anton "Zedd" Zaslavski, Savan Kotecha, & Nicki Minaj; "Sorry" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Justin Tranter, & Julia Michaels; "Let Me Love You" by William "DJ Snake" Grigahcine, Justin Bieber, Andrew "Watt" Wotman, Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee, & Louis Bell; "Cold Water" by Thomas "Diplo" Pentz, Justin Bieber, Karen Marie "MØ" Ørsted, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, "King Henry" Allen, Philip "Jr Blender" Meckseper, Ed Sheeran, & Jamie Scott
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 17 March 2017
My favorite bits:
combining the rhythmic strings and the villagers' greetings from "Belle" with the melody for "I'll Show You"
Belle explicitly giving Gaston the brush-off
the tinkling minor motif from the animated movie as Belle enters the castle
Earl's fantastic growl at the end of "Never Say Never"
LaFou's gleeful fawning over Gaston and dancing on the tables
the sneaky ♫ "May-be" ♫ from "Company" overlapping with the tavern scene and leading into the "Be Our Guest" instrumentation
the Beast's lovely vulnerability during the dinner and dancing
using the crunchy horn motif from "Battle on the Tower" to create menace in this version of "Let Me Love You"
Earl's voice being layered over the final lyrics after the transformation

Trivia:
○ The obvious starting point for this project was Jusin Beiber's "Beauty and a Beat", which Tony and Layne had performed as part of VoicePlay's "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour, but one song does not a full plot make. The guys delved into his extended catalogue to find songs that fit certain story beats and would blend well with the animated movie's score.
○ This was an incredibly ambtious undertaking. According to the PattyCake guys, preparations took five months, and filming spanned "six long days" (and nights, clearly).
○ All that hard work paid off, though, since they were able to time their YouTube release for the same day that the Emma Watson movie hit theaters.
○ VoicePlay recorded a Beauty and the Beast medley for "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), their first album with Tony as a member of the group. Excerpts from that arrangement later appeared in their music videos "Be Our Guest", "Aca Top 10 – Disney Sidekicks", and "Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains". They also included "Belle" in their "Aca Top 10 – Broadway" countdown.
○ "Love Yourself" was the first song in VoicePlay's PartWork series, which they started as preparation for Tony leaving the group.
○ Layne occasionally used "Baby" as his interruption at the end of VoicePlay's "Road Trip" medley / comedy sketch.
○ On top of their usual studio work, this production required multiple location shoots:
The outdoor village scenes were filmed at the Casa Feliz museum.
Beast's castle interior was the Ballroom at Church Street, which closed in 2019, and was demolished 2023.
The tavern was an actual bar, the Tap Room at Dubsdread.
○ Between the main cast and dozens of background folks, they needed so many costumes that Tony enlisted his mom Anita to help wrangle them all.
○ There are several of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni among the main cast:
Michael (Gaston) played Dracula and Frankenstein's monster.
Joey (LaFou) played Wolfman and Dracula.
Brad (Prince Adam) was a dancer in the final "Mashup" iteration of the show.
○ There are also many friends and family among the background cast and crew, including several cast members from previous Unexpected Musicals. Olivia Adkins and Leah Lowman are among the village crowd as Snow White and Cinderella. Rachel Copeland and Matthew Buckner are in the tavern crowd, but not as their previous characters. Many of the other villagers were clubgoers in "Hocus Heathens".
○ This video got a nice write-up on Huffington Post.

~ " - The Julia Necklace -.The House of Boucheron>Marc Newson, renowned designer, created a mathematically generated fractal necklace. It was inspired by Marc’s interest in fractals (geometric shapes that can be subdivided into smaller versions of themselves), specifically the Julia Sets of fractals discovered by Gaston Julia in the early 1900s. The necklace is made from 2,000 pavé stones and took the company’s craftspeople 1,500 hours to realise using rapid-prototyping technology and a minimal three-prong setting, so the stones appear to float on the wearer’s throat." ~

Since you answered that dream cast question (which A+ I love it except I also propose Eva as Cleves alt which would be very wild and good), I thought I might mention another fun casting game I like to play from time to time- have you ever considered a cast where the queens were played by women who are the same age as the queens were in the rhyme? So like Aragon played by an actress who is the age Aragon was when Henry divorced her, etc. it makes for some fun options.
Hey! Really like this one! We have some contradictory historical records on how old the queens were, so I’m going with Aragon 50, Boleyn 29/35, Seymour 28/29, Cleves 24/25, Howard 16-21, and Parr 30/31.
Tumblr media
Aragon: Maia Nkenge Wilson (48) Boleyn: Loren Lott (30). Also really liked Courtnee Carter who should be about 29, but couldn’t confirm. Seymour: Vanessa Magula (28) Cleves: Veronica Otim (24/25) Howard: Samantha Rios (21). I also really liked Israeljah Reign and Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama, who both should be about 21/22, but I couldn’t confirm their ages. Parr: Ari Afsar (31)
Aragon/Parr: Krysta Rodriguez (38)
Boleyn/Seymour: Julia Harriman (30)
Cleves/Howard: Brianna Stoute (24)
And just for fun....I also ran some numbers on which Six actors would be closest to the real life age of each queen. I prioritized actors who are currently in the show and currently principals. If there were multiple who fit that, I generally went for the actor who was the right age both currently and at debut. (Quick note: this was written a bit ago in advance of a few more recent cast announcements)
Aragon: No queens are anywhere near the age Aragon would have been, so I went with the closest, Chloe Hart (35).  Boleyn: Leandra Ellis-Gaston (29). Also could be Storm Lever (29 currently, but 28 at debut) Seymour: Kathryn Kilger (28) Cleves: Maya Christian: (24) Howard: Aubrey Matalon (21). Also could be Chelsea Dawson (22 currently, but 21 at debut) Parr: Taylor Iman Jones (30)  Alternates: Aragon/Boleyn: Jennifer Caldwell (35) Seymour/Parr: Multiple options here! Shannen Quan (29), Kelsee Kimmel (28) OR Kristina Leopold (28). All current and fit the criteria well so I didn’t narrow it down beyond that. Cleves/Howard: Harriet Caplan-Dean (23)

tell me more about imaginary numbers and miss julia if your heart so desires my dear friend
ok ok. did you know imaginary numbers are perpendicular to real numbers. "how does that work" you ask. well basically imagine the real number line. it has 0 (the origin) in the middle, 1 on one side, and -1 on the other side. now we can imagine the imaginary number line. it has 0 (the origin) in the middle, i on one side, and -i on the other side. now! if you multiple 1 by i, you get i. and if you multiple i by i, you get -1 (because it is the square root of -1). and if you multiple -1 by i, you get -i. and if you multiple -i by i, you get 1. which means that by starting on the real number line and continually multiplying by i, you get a full rotation! you turn 90 degrees with each multiplication! and this enables us to envision the imaginary number line as lying at a 90 degree angle, aka perpendicular, to the real number line!
and that's how you get my friend the complex plane
Tumblr media
(a complex number is a real number plus or minus an imaginary number)
the complex plane is basically a map of all complex numbers and it's super useful for all sorts of math. it's worth noting that a point on the x-y plane consists of two numbers (the x and y coordinates) but a point on the complex plane consists of only 1 number, which streamlines a lot of stuff. especially, the output of a function in the x-y plane will usually be a line, but the output of a function in the complex plane will usually be a point. so a lot of complex plane stuff is based on functions that evolve over time, so that you can find patterns in the points they spit out. the iconic mandelbrot fractal, for instance, is generated by putting each point in the complex plane through a recursive function and coloring each point based on how it behaves over the iterations. julia sets (which are also fractals) are also created this way! the mandelbrot set is the graph of a specific function, but julia sets can be created for any function (you can have julia sets of the mandelbrot function, julia sets of the burning ship function, etc).
julia sets are hard to explain in brief so here is a good video about the mandelbrot set that first explains how the julia sets work before moving on to how you get from the mandelbrot set from that. i like this video a lot i think it explains things well :)
youtube
but basically a side effect of [waves at contents of the above video] is that a julia set of a certain fractal (like the mandelbrot fractal) basically takes a point on that fractal and... kind of is visually comprised of whatever the fractal looks like at that point? like, if you zoom in on a point in the mandelbrot set, you get infinite variation, and the mandelbrot set itself has lots of variety going on. but the julia set of any given point on the mandelbrot set will be extremely self-similar because it just looks like the specific point that the julia set function was done to, repeated over and over. this is hard to explain or understand (i'm always kinda foggy on the details myself) but if you watch a bit of this video and maybe slow it down (mandelbrot set on the left, julia set of the point on the fractal illustrated by the moving dot on the right) you can kinda see what i'm talking about. BASICALLY tl;dr every fractal set has an infinite amount of julia sets (which are also fractals) because a julia set is like the "slice" of that fractal in a particular spot. you feel me?
youtube
also here is a long but very thorough and very interesting video series about imaginary numbers, how they were discovered, what they're used for, etc. it gets into math history too and i love math history :) those guys in the like 1500s inventing the quadratic formula with a pen and paper and shit
also! julia sets, despite sounding like a woman's firstname, are named for gaston julia, one of the two scientists who discovered them. he lost his nose in wwi so he wore a leather patch like an eyepatch on the spot it used to be
ok this was a lot of information i got carried away but i hope i explained it ok so you can understand it <:)
