BATB Week - Day 6 "Bamboo" @beauty-beast-week

Bamboos are strong but hollow..... yea thats Gaston alright

Heres a silly comic of him and LeFou in a scenario where he DID survive the fall from the castle! I've never drawn the two before so i thought this week would be good a time to do so :-]

Just back from watching an amateur production of Beauty and the Beast at my local theatre.

Here are the highlights:

Gaston and Lefou accidentally kissed on the lips.

Lumiere kissed Cogsworth on the cheeks multiple times, making Cogsworth flustered.

When they because human, Cogsworth was so happy he kissed Lumiere on the lips, making Lumiere flustered.

Lefou got over Gaston's death pretty quickly and gave Cogsworth a rose at the end.

This is excellent analysis, and reminds me quite a lot of Marc Kudisch’s take on having played Gaston.

CB:   You spoke about not being a leading man, but you've done a lot of roles where you're this dashing fellow, but there's a goofiness behind it, like Gaston in Beauty & The Beast, which brings us back to the big business of theatre too.

MK:   Well, listen; I've got nothing against money. We all like it. But you can make money and still be artistic. Everything is possible that way. I had originally auditioned for that, a long time ago. I wasn't necessarily ready. The person who played the role originally was Burke Moses, and he was brilliant. He established a structure and a creation that everybody followed from there. I was lucky enough that I came in early to replace Burke when they were going out to Los Angeles. It was eight or nine months after they had opened, so I went in with the original company. I remember when I saw the film originally, I was on the tour of Bye Bye Birdie, and we all went to see it when it opened. I saw that character and thought "Oh God if they ever make a musical of this, I'd love to do it." Who wouldn't? I like to play characters that are self-deprecating in some way. I like playing characters that will end up not as they expect. Maybe the audience expects they're gonna end up that way, but they don't expect it.

CB:   My favorite number in that show is the "Gaston" song where all the townspeople sing about how great Gaston is. All the while he has no clue that he's just this oaf.

MK:   But his vanity ... he's not a stupid character. It's very easy to go that route with those kinds of characters. Gaston's not stupid, he's just so vain that he's blind. He's blind to his own fault. And when he's exposed he in turn exposes his true belly, which is very mean and nasty. I like finding the flaw of a character and absolutely exploiting it.

My favorite line in the show is when Belle says to him "Gaston, you're positively primeval." And he says, "Why thank you." And it's not that he doesn't understand it, he completely does. That's a compliment to him. She means it as an insult and he takes it as a come on.

CB:   People who've only seen the cartoon may not know that the show put back in a couple of songs, including one called "Maison De Lune" where we see that evil and the crafty side you just mentioned.

MK:   And cowardice. There's a certain cowardice there, too. He has to get someone else to do the dirty work. A bully is generally someone who is a coward in one way or another.

It's fun to play characters like that. They don't bend, they snap. Carl-Magnus (from A Little Night Music) is in some ways a similar character; he's a man of his vanity at times. Again, not a stupid man. Unlike Gaston, he's a very honest man. Gaston lies, Carl-Magnus never lies. I like playing Carl-Magnus because he's the most honest person on the stage. People don't think of it that way, they only see the result, not the intent. An actor's job is to see the intent. I always say that in rehearsals. I'm looking for the intent, not the result. When I find the one, I automatically get the other.

the way disney was in no way fucking around with their renaissance-era villains... i miss it. i miss it so bad.

part of what makes gaston work so well, i think, is the escalation. his first scene with belle - you could put this interaction in any period romance made in the 1990s, and still confidently convince your audience that they’d be happily ever after in the end, after he works on himself a little.

and, as we were discussing earlier, it is clear that he does, to a degree, care what belle thinks of him! as you said, he really thinks he’s making a good impression, haha. there’s the part where lefou starts making fun of maurice, and gaston laughs along right up until belle objects - and the proposal! it is obnoxious and terrible, to us, the audience, but this is not, like, the gothic villain menacing and threatening the heroine into marriage (at this point, anyway). he genuinely thinks he is delivering belle the greatest news she will ever receive. he genuinely thinks he is going to make her happy. he does not want to hurt her. he just cannot get out of his own ego and worldview enough to comprehend that she would not want to live this way.

fascinating way to handle a villain in this mold, in my opinion.

(and this is just me going wild on interpretation for a second, but i always thought there was something kind of similar going on, when he complains about her reading and goes “the whole town is talking about it.” like, it is not hard for me to imagine his thought process being, like, come on, belle, don’t you just want to be normal, and have friends, and hang out with cool people like ME? it makes life so much easier!)

i think your point about how it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to treat gaston as stupid is true, too! his plotting against belle and maurice is effective and, yeah, he definitely knows what the fuck he’s doing while he manipulates the whole village (although, in fairness, i do not think the villagers are, uh, particularly difficult to manipulate).

ALSO. MAN QUOTES MACBETH. shakespeare exists in this universe. belle and the beast read romeo and juliet in the deleted/restored interlude between “something there” and “human again.” ergo gaston saying “screw your courage to the sticking place!” is AN IN-UNIVERSE SHAKESPEARE REFERENCE. i intend to start bringing the energy people give belle as The Smart Princess to gaston as The Smart Villain for this. (mostly kidding. but my point stands.)
