Gasparilla Festival in Tampa
I recently moved to Tampa, Florida, in March 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in the United States. Upon moving here, I was told about how amazing the Gasparilla festival is and that I must attend the next one. It happens yearly at the end of January and since I just missed the 2020 festival, I would attend the 2021 event. Unfortunately, the 2021 Gasparilla festival did not happen due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19. Bummer! So now I was going to have to wait another year to attend this amazing festival that everyone talks about. Here we are now in 2022, and finally Gasparilla is happening, and I can attend and experience it firsthand. Before I tell you my Gasparilla experience, I’ll give you a brief history on what Gasparilla even is and how it began here in Tampa.
Gasparilla actually derives from the name of Jose Gaspar, Gasparilla was his nickname, and he is the “Last of the Buccaneers”, who terrorized the southwest coast of Florida for many years. He is only part of a folklore and there is no proof that he actually existed… so sad I know. Although he may not actually be a real person, he provided the name to one of the most exciting festivals in Florida. In 1904, there was a staged surprise “pirate invasion” to help promote the city of Tampa and celebrate May Day. Costumes were rented from New Orleans and the first “Krewe” arrived on horseback and ‘captured the city” during the festival parade on May 4,1904. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla is members for Gasparilla, but you may mistake them for real pirates since they dress in character so well. 1911 was when the krewe first used a ship to capture the city of Tampa and to this day they do a ship invasion on the Tampa Bay to start of the festivities.
Many people come to attend Gasparilla every year and it can bring crowds of nearly 300,000 people, so it’s best to get there early. Gasparilla was held on January 29th this year and I had the pleasure to attend, and my work even hosted their own tent to be front row for the parade. Unfortunately, it was a cold day, and in Florida, the people do not like the cold, but we all suffered and froze our butts off just to see the pirates capture the city. I’m sure you’re thinking, none of this sounds fun or appealing, well maybe not the cold part, but it was a blast! What isn’t fun about being able to act like a pirate for the day and drink enough rum to forget it’s even cold outside. The festival and parade are about 7 hours long, and with people on floats and pirates throwing beads to you for hours you become covered in beads you can barely breathe. The aftermath of the parade is almost like the end of a battle, there is remnants of where the parade took place, and there are beads and unfortunately trash everywhere. If you want to soak up some pirate culture on Tampa Bay, this is the festival to attend, sadly there is no buried treasure or rubies, but you get to have a great time surrounded by pirates and friends. I’ve learned living in Tampa, it’s okay to be a pirate for the day or if you are a part of the krewe, you could be a pirate for a lifetime, as long as you have the right qualities. And don’t forget where there is rum, there is fun!

Mardi Gras starts on New Year’s Day and continues til Fat Tuesday. I love the parades and balls the most. My mom’s extended family is involved in Zulu.
i've always wanted to go, but never could because it fell into a time when my season was going on [tho we were always able to go to gasparilla bc it was in tampa] but my mom's gone to mardi gras and i've seen her pictures and it just looks like so much fun 🥺
i'm not all that knowledgeable on mardi gras and the parade, but i did a lil google search and came across krewe of zulu in the parade line up and the pictures are sooo pretty and cool. all of those colors in their outfits and i'm now v curious as to what this coconut throw is 👀
but it's literally on my bucket list to attend mardi gras AT LEAST once 😭

Pirate ship for the captain of our #gasparilla krewe, The Krew of Sir Francis Drake. Best one in the parades... too bad they're cancelled right now.
