Gloria Swanson and Lionel Barrymore in Sadie Thompson (Raoul Walsh, 1928)
Cast: Gloria Swanson, Lionel Barrymore, Blanche Friderici, Charles Lane, Florence Midgley, James A. Marcus, Sofia Ortega, Will Stanton, Raoul Walsh. Screenplay: Raoul Walsh; titles: C. Gardner Sullivan; based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham and a play by John Colton and Clemence Randolph. Cinematography: George Barnes, Robert Kurrie, Oliver T. Marsh. Art direction: William Cameron Menzies. Film editing: C. Gardner Sullivan.
It's sad that most people know Gloria Swanson only as the gorgon Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. (Billy Wilder, 1957). Or that Swanson's deft parody of silent movie acting in that film constitutes many people's impression of what it was like. The survival of Sadie Thompson, even though it's missing its last reel, which the restorers piece out with old stills and title cards, shows what a formidable force Swanson could be on screen, generating enough heat that it's surprising she didn't ignite the nitrate film stock. The story is the familiar one of the San Francisco prostitute who comes to Pago Pago, where she clashes with a bluenose reformer who threatens to return her to San Francisco and the hands of the police. The reformer is Alfred Davidson (Lionel Barrymore in full ham), who was a clergyman in Somerset Maugham's short story, "Miss Thompson," and the play, Rain, that was based on it, but becomes a layman here to please the Hays Office. Fortunately, Sadie has the support of a sturdy young Marine sergeant, Timothy O'Hara, played by director Raoul Walsh, who before turning director full-time had been an actor in the early days of silents; he played John Wilkes Booth in The Birth of a Nation (D.W. Griffith, 1915). This brief return to acting was a one-shot: Walsh was planning to direct himself again in In Old Arizona (Irving Cummings, 1928), but lost his right eye in a freak auto accident while on location preparing to shoot the film; Warner Baxter took over the role and won an Oscar for it. Swanson was nominated for an Oscar for Sadie Thompson, as was cinematographer George Barnes, whose nomination included his work on two other films: The Devil Dancer (Fred Niblo, 1927) and The Magic Flame (Henry King, 1927). In fact, Barnes did only a week's worth of filming on Sadie Thompson before Samuel Goldwyn insisted he fulfill a contractual obligation to him; he was replaced by Robert Kurrle and Oliver T. Marsh.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Ann (Blom) Berry. To so many, she was a skilled caregiver, a caring friend, and a loyal supporter. To us, she was mom, grandma, sister, and Aunt Hon. She peacefully went to the Lord on May 13 at the age of 81.
Her memory and legacy will live on through those who loved her, including her children, Michael (Cindi) Berry, Kristin (Brian) Kertin, and Karen (Sean) Gardner; her grandchildren, Justin Berry, Madison Kertin, Andrew Berry, Katelyn Kertin, Joseph Gardner, and Ryan Gardner; her brother, Wayne (Susan) Blom; her nephews, Jason Blom and Brian (Michelle) Blom; her great nephew and niece, Lincoln Blom and Monroe Blom; and many extended relatives, including cousins, Margaret Iles, David (Katriya) Carlson, Donald (Sherry) Blom, Doug (Jan) Blom, Richard (Martha) Blom, Daniel (Jeanne) Blom, Jerry (Lorraine) Hyatt, Becky (Johnny) Long, Laura (Troy) Fraebel. Katherine (Hans) Crump-Wiesner, Judith (Vincent) Fala, Margaret Ann Rutledge (G. Stuart Ackman), Albert Turner Rutledge (Anne Marie Carry), and Martha Holden Rutledge (Richard Young). She is preceded in death by her father, Grant Blom, and her mother, Marian Blom.
Mary Ann was born on November 25, 1941, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was raised in Terre Haute, Indiana. She lived many places throughout the United States, but spent her retirement years in Noblesville, Indiana.
Mary Ann built a life that was centered in her faith, dedicated to service, and committed to her loved ones.
She grew up attending Bible Center Church in Terre Haute where she established friendships at a young age that continued into her adult years as they attended nursing school together at West Suburban College of Nursing in Oak Park, Illinois. These friendships remained to be some of the most valued relationships in her life up until her passing.
After graduating from nursing school in 1962 she briefly taught younger students at West Suburban before pursuing her Bachelor of Science from Bob Jones University. At Bob Jones, she met, and later married, Herbert Berry. Together, they had three children. She poured her heart into service as a nurse. Early on, she served as a missionary in South Korea, supporting an orphanage and helping to place babies into loving homes. Her nursing career spanned 40 years, including 15 years with the VA in Marion, Indiana. Even in her retirement, she continued working in the healthcare sector part-time with Sunrise Senior Living in Carmel, Indiana until she died – an experience that, in her words, was the best job she ever had.
A lifelong Christian, she regularly participated in prayer circles, bible studies, peer ministry, and as a member of the alter guild. She was an active member of Spirit of Joy Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and a regular volunteer at The Sharing Place.
She was dedicated to her family – dog sitting (even though she didn't particularly like dogs), attending her grandchildren's sporting events, and traveling many miles to help with her children's various moves and home projects.
In addition to her commitment to the church, volunteerism, work, and family – she loved spending time on her hobbies, particularly decorating her home, sewing for children and grandchildren, and tending to her garden.
When we celebrated Mary Ann's 80th birthday in 2021 or attended her Blom family reunion that was 70 years in the making last year, we certainly thought she had decades left to live. Though Mary Ann's earthly life ended earlier than we expected, we know she lived it to the fullest and is now in the heavenly home God has promised.
A Celebration of Eternal Life for Mary Ann will be held at Spirit of Joy Church (3535 Kessler Blvd E Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46220) on May 18 at 1:00pm with visitation immediately preceding, beginning at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in her memory to one of Mary Ann's causes: The Sharing Place (through Lutheran Child and Family Services), Spirit of Joy Church, or Compassion International.

DESPERATE EYES 💓🤘🏻
Shot and filmed at SIR Studios Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles
“Ana Moll is an upcoming songstress playing on the heavy metal and melodic rock sounds of the 1980s and Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. Presenting to you a single from the upcoming EP, wrapped up in influences ranging all across the board, from Motley Crue to Samantha Fox. Heavily inspired by retro female frontrunners like Janet Gardner, Lorraine Lewis, and Lita Ford, Ana puts her own spin on the classic rockstar sound of days gone by with her girlish voice and distinctive songwriting. Ana honed her skills in writing at an early age and paired with her love of early MTV and Headbangers Ball videos, resulted in a fusion of serious rock-pop goodness. From a small Jersey town just like Bon Jovi she presents to listeners a fruit punch of electric guitars and soaring vocals. You’ll want to make sure not to miss the debut EP in the new year”

Schwab’s Pharmacy and Soda Fountain
Tumblr media
Schwab’s Pharmacy was the stuff of legends. It was perhaps the most famous drugstore in America during the Golden Age of Hollywood. The Hollywood branch of Schwab’s at 8024 Sunset Boulevard was the first store in a chain founded by Leana Schwab to support her six children. During its over five decade run, Schwab’s operated seven different locations in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, and all six children worked to make the business a success. Son Jack founded the Sunset Boulevard location in 1932. His brother Leon, after earning a degree in pharmacology from USC, took over after Jack’s death. Leon promoted the pharmacy’s proximity to the studios, set up delivery and charge accounts, and ran “tabs” for out of work actors. He encouraged publicity through columnists, film shoots, and accommodating tourists.
Tumblr media
A lot happened here. Contrary to popular lore, Lana Turner’s discovery was not one of them. The true stories are even more interesting. The soda fountain was the big attraction and meeting spot. Gossip columnist Sidney Skolsky made it and the adjacent phone booth his office, using the tag line “From A Stool at Schwab’s” in all his write ups. He filed stories about Orson Welles, Ava Gardner buying lipstick, William Randolph Hearst picking up medicine for Marian Davies. Some stars were allowed behind the counter to make their own sodas or grab a cup of coffee. Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Judy Garland all got their prescriptions filled there. Charlie Chaplin and his sons were also regulars.
Schwab’s was officially etched in the pantheon of popular culture when it was featured in Paramount Studios’ movie Sunset Boulevard starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden, making it instantly world famous and a tourism magnet. The nearby Garden of Allah apartments also helped the trade. Its residents included many actors and writers like Robert Benchley and F. Scott Fitzgerald who would often pop in for a quick meal.
Tumblr media
When it was torn down in November 1959 and replaced with a retail complex, the residential nature of that section of Sunset Blvd further declined and Schwab’s nearby customer base dwindled. By the 60s, the Strip as a whole was changing fast. Schwab’s closed at midnight while other restaurant and nightclubs stayed open 24 hours. Many regulars felt uncomfortable being around the new club scene, but Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and others continued to patronize the pharmacy.
February 1982 marked the 50th anniversary of Schwab’s Sunset location. It was a major event, but as the press was reporting on Schwab’s illustrious past, in reality Leon was struggling to keep the business afloat. The iconic gathering spot eventually closed for good two years later and the building was demolished in 1988. Thankfully, its memory lives on through photographs, like those found in our collection, as well as film and TV shows that continue to re-create its glory days for today’s audiences.

Announcing: the tour for "How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems," Randall "XKCD" Munroe's next book
Tumblr media
[Randall Munroe traces the phenomenal success of his webcomic XKCD with this Boing Boing post; and I've avidly followed his career ever since (he's returned the favor), so I was delighted to learn in February that he had a new book coming out and I'm more delighted still to host the official announcement of his tour, which you can book extra dates for (see below) -Cory]
Here's what Randall's publisher says about "How To": "A major work, chock full of deeply researched, entertaining, and often alarming scientific thought experiments, explained through Munroe’s clever infographics, amusing illustrations, and whimsical touches. HOW TO is the world’s most entertaining and useless self-help guide, full of highly impractical advice for everything from landing a plane to digging a hole to predicting the weather by analyzing the pixels of your Facebook photos."
Randall and I have presented together and I can assure you that it's always worth your time to see him in person.
