What varieties of Navel Oranges grow best in the Low Desert?
In the Low Desert regions of Arizona, where the climate is characterized by hot summers and mild winters, certain varieties of Navel Oranges tend to perform exceptionally well. Here are some of the best-suited Navel Orange varieties for this area: Washington Navel Orange: This is perhaps the most popular and widely planted Navel Orange variety. It’s known for its sweet flavor, seedless fruit,…

Black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona.
None of the animals or birds at the botanical garden are captive, but many of the critters that live on the grounds become habituated to people. I have never encountered a more laid back jackrabbit than this fellow. When I see them in truly wild conditions they vanish before I can lift my camera. This one was practically posing.

An early piece for the Sonic Garden, organized by @shadowxamyweek! Two of my favorite things in life are Sonic the Hedgehog and plants, so how could I resist?
I just got back from a trip to the States, and it's no surprise my main source of inspiration here was the South West <3 Read more about the plants under the cut > >
The cactus is called Opuntia, commonly known as "Prickly Pear". While they do bloom, I don't know if they bloom like this. I just really wanted to draw pretty orange flowers XD Not only do they bloom, they bear fruits! The one in the background is a Saguaro cactus. Some of them grow pretty tall. They really give you that classic desert feeling. Love it!

Photos by me.
I think this is the first post I want to make to tumblr because these photos are special to me.
I was on a gorgeous roadtrip through Arizona a few years ago appreciating the Sonoran desert, but I stopped in downtown Phoenix for a coffee, and ended up finding the most beautiful potted plant display I think I’ve ever seen, in a little quiet courtyard by some restaurants. This set really only shows half of the display, even, there was another setup right beside it equally as remarkable. I also enjoy painting, and the level of subtle detail here caught my eye. I took some of these photos as references to paint later.
I’m just captivated by the number of different textures and colors fit into these two planters. How so many unique plants could blend together into such an aesthetically pleasing display. I was out in the desert to marvel at the natural beauty, but I was struck just as hard by the human ingenuity of whoever put those pots together, and the people tending the plants and keeping them healthy. It made me happy for humanity.
I had the book “Walkable City” by Jeff Speck stuck in my brain, as I often do, and I wonder at what humans might achieve if we were more in touch with nature and less in touch with blind capitalism. I want to elaborate more on what that trip taught me, but I wanted to show these flowers first and foremost, because to me they represent hope and creativity and inspiration.

CHIHULY STUDIO: Chihuly in the Desert, Desert Botanical Garden & Taliesin West
Chihuly returns to the Sonoran Desert with “Chihuly in the Desert”, a new exhibition set against majestic saguaros, landmark buildings, and striking Papago buttes. Presented at Desert Botanical Garden and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, the joint exhibition combines art, architecture to create an unparalleled experience.

Three of my favorite things: Dale Chihuly's glass art installations, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, and Phoenix's Desert Botanical Garden. It doesn't get much better than that.

In early summer I noticed some spiny, bright red hopper nymphs on the datura in the backyard. Within a week or so, they started turning into orange, fin-shaped adults. I had never seen anything quite like them.
I rarely try to identify creatures or plants because I am lazy and forgetful. I just like looking at them, not looking them up. But these are so striking that they were easy to find.
They are Antianthe expansa, or keeled treehoppers, and the very first photos that popped up were taken in the neighboring county.
I've read that they can eat tomatoes and eggplant, but these have only seemed interested in datura (another nightshade relative), and I mostly grow it because it brings all the insect boys to the yard. So, we're all happy.
Cochise County, Arizona, June 2024.
(If you'd like to see an insane number of additional photos...)
