🇵🇹 Returning to Portugal after 17 years (!!) was a real treat, particularly because I got to re-visit some of the spots I loved when I first visited in 2006, during a time when I was living in neighboring Spain. 🌍
SAVE these 3 Delicious Day Trips from #Lisbon: 1️⃣ SINTRA: The mountain town of Sintra can be reached by car or train in just 30 minutes. It offers visitors TONS to see, including: 🌈 rainbow-hued Pena Palace 🪷 picturesque Quinta da Regaleira gardens 🍷 quaint town center 2️⃣ CASCAIS: The beach town of Cascais takes about an hour to reach on the local commuter train, or 30 minutes if you drive. My favorite draws are: 👙 beautiful beaches 🌊 lengthy promenade 🎣 seafood restaurants lining the shore 3️⃣ BELÉM: Easy to reach via public transit or taxi/Uber, Belém is just five miles west of central Lisbon. No matter how you get there, make sure to enjoy the: 🗼 historic sights, such as Belem Tower & Jerónimos Monastery ⛵️ waterfront promenade 🥮 egg custard tarts (pasties de nata) from @pasteisbelem Which day trip looks the best to you?! • • • • • #lisboa #lisbon #portugal #familytravel #eurotrip #travelwithkids #europe #europa #traveleurope #lisbonne #lisbona #eurotour #visitportugal #visitlisbon #familytrip #girlslovetravel #travelfemme #glt #cascais #travelreel #travelfilm #beautifuldestinations #traintravel #belem #sintra #fairytale #sintra #penapalace #dreamdestinations #trending

Portugal is an enchanting European country that invites tourists by offering picturesque views, historical sites, and cultural appeal. This nation has everything from charming streets of Lisbon to castles’ like Sintra, making it an attractive destination for every type of tourist. It is therefore advisable to learn the relevant visa that applies to your visit before going on this journey. For citizens of some countries, will have to get a Portugal visa that will enable them to not only tour Portugal but all Schengen countries.
Visa application may be daunting at times but with the right information the journey to this beautiful country is smooth. This way, once you have your visa, you can freely explore all that Portugal has to offer – from indulging in pastéis de nata in a coffee shop to gazing at the Algarve coast. In this guide, we will consider the six best places to visit in Portugal and the unforgettable emotions that can be received there.
Here are the number one to six tourist destinations that every traveler visiting Portugal must consider.
1. Lisbon – The Enchanted Capital
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and it is a great example of the country’s past and present. Lisbon, with its beautiful hills, stone paved streets and buildings painted in soft colors, is a must see destination. Start your tour at the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, two of the most recognized buildings that have been listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. After that, catch the iconic Tram 28 that will take you through the old neighborhoods of Alfama, Graça, and Baixa. For views of the city do not omit the Santa Justa Elevator. What is more, Lisbon is not sleeping at night, and many bars and restaurants are located in Bairro Alto.
2. Porto – The City of Bridges and Wine
Porto is best known for its port wine, the beautiful riverside and the marvelous bridges. Located in the Douro River, Porto has medieval buildings including a district and a bridge called Dom Luís I Bridge. Cross the Avenida dos Aliados and walk along the riverfront, check out the antiquated Lello Bookstore, or marvel at the impressive Palácio da Bolsa. Every wine enthusiast must pay a visit to the several port wine cellars in the Vila Nova de Gaia area and enjoy tasting the wine while being educated on the history of the port wine. São Bento Railway Station is one of the most famous railway stations and is famous for its azulejos, hand-painted tiles.
3. Sintra – A Fairy-Tale Escape
Sintra is a small town near Lisbon that has beautiful mountains, beautiful gardens and beautiful palazzos. Pena Palace located on the hilltop above the town is one of the most fairy tale like and vivid palaces in Europe, the views of the countryside are breathtaking. Next to it, you will be intrigued by the tunnels, grottoes, and the renowned Initiation Well of the Quinta da Regaleira. The Moorish Castle which dates back to the 8th century is a perfect historical symbol of Portugal and while taking a tour here one has a chance to see the amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
4. The Algarve – Sun Sea and Stupendous Rock Faces
Laying to the south of Portugal the Algarve is well known for its long sandy beaches, cute fishing villages and rocks. Lagos is one among the most visited towns in the area that provides both historical and beach experience with amazing cliffs of Ponta da Piedade. Faro is the capital of the Algarve region and there is much to see in the old town including Roman and Moorish influences. For the lovers of nature, there are boat trips through Ria Formosa Nature Park and bird-watching. Tropical beaches provide an excellent opportunity for tourists to engage in water activities including surfing, scuba diving and even watching dolphins.
5. Madeira – the island that never ages
If nature and calmness are in your list, then Madeira is a perfect holiday destination. It enjoys a warm climate all year round and is famous by the name, Island of Eternal Spring. It has many levadas – the terraced irrigation water channels which also serve as paths for tourists with beautiful views over the greenery and rocky coast of Madeira. It would be a shame not to visit the capital of Madeira – Funchal – where one can also visit the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, Sé Cathedral as well as ride a cable car that will give spectacular views of the island. Madeira also has the sweet Madeira wine and the New Year celebration fireworks.
6. Óbidos – The Medieval Marvel
Óbidos is a picturesque medieval village which is almost completely encircled by castle walls. Óbidos is an ideal day trip from Lisbon, which features a lot of narrow and cobblestone streets with white houses and flowers. The focus is in Óbidos Castle which is today a hotel; however, the path along the castle walls offers an incredible view to the town. Óbidos celebrates a Medieval Festival every July with realistic demonstrations of jousting tournaments, medieval music and craft fairs. So be sure to sample Ginjinha, a cherry brandy which is usually consumed in a chocolate cup.
Conclusion:
Portugal is a country that can be truly considered a country for any kind of tourist, as it has something to offer to the fans of history, brave cliffs of Algarve, beautiful nature of Madeira, as well as fans of medieval architecture and charming Óbidos. Having arranged all the sightseeing and getting a visa for traveling you are able to discover the wealth of cultural and historical legacy, taste the exquisite dishes, and enjoy the magnificent nature of this fascinating country. No matter your purpose – to have fun, to lie on the beach, or to travel back in time, Portugal will provide you with an unforgettable experience and memories that will be with you for a lifetime.

Here are some of the most famous landmarks in Portugal to visit:
1. Lisbon's Belém Tower: Portugal's Age of Discovery is embodied in the renowned Belém Tower, also known as Torre de Belém. Constructed during the initial years of the 16th century, it functioned as a stronghold to safeguard Lisbon and as a symbolic entrance to the city. Its unique Manueline architecture, which is embellished with fine carvings and nautical themes, pays homage to Portugal's naval history. Its interior is open for exploration, and ascending the winding staircase will reward visitors with expansive views of the Tagus River and the surroundings. When learning about Lisbon's rich past and culture, visitors must see the Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. Sintra's Pena Palace: Pena Palace is a castle from a fairy tale that appears to be right out of a novel, nestled in the lush forests of the Sintra Mountains. It was constructed in the 19th century and is a fanciful and vibrant masterpiece that blends aspects of Manueline, Gothic, Moorish, and Romantic architecture. It is one of Portugal's most Instagram-worthy sites because of its vivid yellow and red walls, exquisite details, and lovely setting. Its lavish rooms are open for exploration, and guests can take in breath-taking vistas of the surrounding countryside as well as stroll through the parkland. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pena Palace is the centerpiece of any vacation to Sintra.
3. Lisbon's Jerónimos Monastery: Representing Portugal's heyday of adventure, the Jerónimos Monastery, also known as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, is a magnificent example of Manueline architecture. Constructed in the sixteenth century to honor Vasco da Gama's victorious journey to India, this building is well-known for its intricate carvings, cloisters, and exquisite chapels. The stunning Church of Santa Maria, with its elaborate vaulted ceilings and superb stained-glass windows, is the monastery's focal point. In addition, visitors can explore the Monument to the Discoveries, which honors Portugal's explorers, and the nearby Maritime Museum. Not to be missed is the Jerónimos Monastery, a cultural treasure recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
4. Lisbon's São Jorge Castle: São Jorge Castle, perched atop Lisbon's highest peak, provides expansive views of the city and the Tagus River. It was initially constructed in the eleventh century by the Moors, and for many years afterward, it was both a royal home and a fortification. Because of its strong walls, towers, and archaeological sites, it is now a well-liked tourist destination. The ramparts of the castle can be explored, the archeological museum can be visited, and plays and cultural events can be enjoyed within its gates. São Jorge Castle is a live example of Lisbon's rich and varied history, in addition to being a historical site.
5. Porto's Dom Luís I Bridge: The Dom Luís I Bridge in Porto, which spans the Douro River, is a famous landmark and an engineering marvel. When the Gustave Eiffel-designed bridge was finished in 1886, it held the record for being the longest iron arch bridge in the world. These days, it serves as a link between the lively Vila Nova de Gaia, which is home to many of Porto's renowned port wine cellars, and the ancient Ribeira neighbourhood. Take a leisurely cruise along the Douro to see the bridge from below, or wander over the upper deck to enjoy panoramic views of the river and the city skyline. A beloved monument that embodies Porto's beauty and charm is the Dom Luís I Bridge.
6. Coimbra, at the University of Coimbra: One of the oldest universities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the University of Coimbra. Its magnificent architectural legacy and rich history date back to its founding in 1290. Perched atop a hill with sweeping views of the city and Mondego River lies the university's main campus, called the Alta and Sofia. Its ancient structures are open for exploration by guests. Two such buildings are the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, which contains the university's administrative offices, and the Joanine Library, which boasts exquisite Baroque architecture and a collection of rare literature. The university's 18th-century botanical garden, with its wide variety of plants and serene ambiance, is another well-liked destination.

Buçaco Palace Hotel
Hotel do Buçaco is a wonderful hotel located in Serra do Buçaco in central Portugal. This building was a Convento de Carmelitas Descalças in 1628. The monks built this Convent but also a wonderful Garden with several species of trees. At the entrance of the Convent there is a plaque referring to the Battle of Bussaco in 1810 in which the British Luso troops defeated the Napoleonic troops and Viscount Wellington, the future Duke of Wellington spent the night after the Battle, on the 27th of September. With the extinction of orders in 1834, this building was designed for the royal residence of Queen D. Maria Pia, but due to political problems, it was decided to transform the building into a hotel. Its construction started in 1888 during the reign of King D. Luís I and ended in the reign of his son, D. Carlos I in 1907. The Manueline style was used as a tribute to the 16th century style characterized by the Discoveries. His inspiration was the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. Since 1996 the hotel has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Festas de Lisboa: António & Variações
June 29, 22h00, in the garden of Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) there will be a tribute concert to portuguese singer-songwriter and queer icon António Varições, a unique figure in Portuguese music and a profoundly original artist who managed to create a perfect synthesis of pop, folk, fado and international pop-rock in the 80′s. Songs like “Estou além”, “O corpo é que paga” and “Canção do engate”, became a reference point in modern Portuguese music and influenced many artists of his time and many that were born after his untimely death in June 13 1984. In this concert his songs will be sang by the artists Ana Bacalhau, Conan Osiris, Lena d’Água, Manuela Azevedo, Paulo Bragança and Selma Uamusse, and arranged for the first time for orchestral instruments If you are in Lisbon don’t miss it, it’s free admission! Hi! This is gonna be so random, please ignore if it's a bother or an off-topic! I'm planning to visit Portugal (Porto, Lisbon and maybe somewhere else) and wanted to ask what would you recommend? Museums, cafes, bars, etc. Places that are not just touristic "must see" but something interesting or just places you liked or heard about? Some landmark or a beach or just good place to eat portuguese cuisine. I'm falling in love with Portugal (through football :D) and your blog is one of the reasons!
Hi!! Believe me, you’re not bothering at all. It makes me really happy that you like Portugal :D
Okay, so I live in Porto, I don’t know Lisbon that well, I rarely go there so if anyone wants to suggest places to visit, go ahead. Another city I highly recommend you to visit is Braga. It’s really close to Porto and it’s a beautiful city.
I’m not that great at these kind of things, but let’s give it a shot.
Porto:
Places to visit:
Downtown (Baixa) and Ribeira (Riverside) - two must see touristic places, there are usually quite a lot of people, but you can’t really not see them. Just get lost in them and visit Lello Bookshop, Aliados Avenue,Tower of Clérigos, Santa Catarina Street, etc. Also, cross the D. Luis I Bridge to go to the other side of the river and enjoy the view of Porto from there.
Casa da Música to see a concert.
The gardens of Palácio de Cristal.
Foz and Molhe - People don’t usually go here, but it’s a beautiful. It’s the seaside part of the city. The beaches aren’t great, but it’s very calm and a good place to walk around and enjoy the sea.
City Park - it’s big and really nice, it has a couple of lakes and there are ducks and rabbits and chickens (very randomly).
Serralves Museum is also really nice if you enjoy contemporary art and stuff like that. Also, be sure to check the Serralves garden. I think you have to pay for it, but it’s worth it.
You can also take the train and go to Miramar, to go to the Miramar Beach or any beach in that area. They are much better than the ones in Porto and it’s really close.
EDIT: thank you @pop-pink
Restaurants/Bars:
Some restaurants where you can eat typical portuguese food - Café Santiago, Cervejaria Brasão, Capa Negra, Cufra. You also have to visit the Macdonals that is in Aliados Avenue because it’s the most beautiful MacDonals in the world (trust me xp). I’m kind of blanking on more restaurants. The other day Iker Casillas was recommending restaurants in his IG and he did a better job than me xp
EDIT: Go to Iker’s instagram, he has the stories about Porto restaurants saved! It’s called ‘Comer Porto’. Just check the prices of the restaurants, he has a mix of afourdable and expensive places. Check the fish restaurants in Matosinhos. He recommends ‘Dom Peixe’. I’ve eaten there, It’s quite nice.
If you want to go out at night I recommend the night clubs that are in Rua das Galerias and around that area.
Lisbon:
Like I said, I really don’t know Lisbon that well, but be sure to go to a restaurant where they sing fado. If you want to enjoy the night life go to Bairro Alto. I only really know the usual typical touristic sites (Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monestery, Downtown, Alfama, São Jorge Castle (people have told me that it isn’t really worth it, but I don’t know, I haven’t been there), Rossio Sqaure and so on) , so I’m no help xp
Also, take the train and go to Sintra! Visit Palácio da Pena and Quinta da Regaleira. I was there this summer and it’s really worth it!
Braga:
Places to visit:
Bom Jesus do Monte - be ready to climb a lot of stairs, there’s an elevator if you don’t feel like it.
Braga is a very religious city so be sure to check the Sé and the many cathedrals in the city.
Jardim de Santa Clara.
Except for Bom Jesus do Monte, most of the attractions in Braga are in the center of the city. I recommend spending the day there walking around and checking the place. It’s beautiful!
Restaurants/Bars:
I always go to these places whenever I’m there - Café Vianna and O Alexandre (this is a more fancy restaurant, but the food is delicious)
I might add some stuff later, but right now this is everything that’s coming to my mind. Like I said I don’t know Lisbon well enough, I can spend years without ever going there.
This answer is kind of a mess, but I hope this is useful anon :D
If anyone has more suggestions please do comment on this post :)
(this post is probably full of errors/typos, sorry about that xp)

Europe 2022 - Spain & Portugal (day 6) - Lisbon, Cascais & Sintra
We started the day with a bus tour of Lisbon. Seven cinematic hillsides overlooking the Rio Tejo cradle Lisbon's postcard-perfect panorama of cobbled alleyways, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals – a captivating scene crafted over centuries. We stopped for photos at the Monument of the Discoveries, a group of sculptures that represent the prow of a caravel (a small sailing ship constructed by the Portuguese to explore the Atlantic Ocean). Leading the ship is Prince Henry the Navigator and behind him are many other great Portuguese discoverers. The next stop was the Belem Tower (Torre de Belém), used to defend the city. Years later, it was transformed into a lighthouse and customs house.
We then headed to the Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), one of the most visited sites in Lisbon. UNESCO declared both the Monastery and Belem Tower as World Heritage Sites in 1983. Attached to the monastery is The Church of Santa Maria . This is very unique and completely different from the rest. The temple has a single nave that is held up by six beautifully sculpted columns and the church seems to go on forever. The Church houses the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, a Portuguese poet and writer.
Located next to the monastery is the Pastéis de Belém, where the famous Pastéis de Belém tarts are baked. Developed by monks who lived in the Jerónimos Monastery centuries ago, it may be 200 or more years old. There are many variations of pastéis de nata but only one Pastéis de Belém.
After our morning snack of tarts we got back on the the bus and headed to the Portuguese Riviera, the affluent coastal region to the west of Lisbon. The region is internationally known as a luxury destination for its history as a home of the wealthy, the famous, and European royalty. Our first stop was Cascais for lunch, photos and shopping. We headed to the beach to stick our feet in the Atlantic Ocean and then headed for lunch. We tried piri piri chicken and the gelato from the famous Santini’s (over 70 years old).
We got back on the bus and headed to Sintra. A major tourist destination famed for its picturesqueness, it has several historic palaces, castles, scenic beaches, parks and gardens. Unfortunately, I thought we were going to the famous colorful Palais de Pena, however instead we went to the National Palace or town palace. This palace is a medieval in decor and the facade is white with two giant smoke stacks. After touring the castle, we headed up the hill to the old Jewish quarter, which was basically just souvenir shops.
For supper, we headed to Restaurante Vale do Rio for a seafood feast. It started with seafood croquettes and prawns, then shrimp soup, sauteed shrimps in butter, clams in garlic, soft shells crab you got to hit wi to a hammer, seabreen fillet, and fresh fruit. What a fun evening filled with lots of seafood. To come home, we took the ferry across the river with views of the April 25th bridge (copy of the Golden Gate), and the Christo Rei statue (copy Christ the Redeemer).
