O primeiro bolo-rei. * The first bolo-rei. The bolo-rei (king cake) as we know it was born in France (in the 17th century) and was brought by Balthazar Castanheiro Jr. to the Confeitaria Nacional in 1873, making our establishment the first to sell this delicacy in Portugal. But not everything was easy. Both abroad and in Portugal this cake was a victim of "political pressure“ due to it’s allusion to the monarchy: in 1789, with the end of the monarchy in France, the sale of "gateâu des rois" was temporarily forbidden; in Portugal the republicans made several attempts to change the name of the cake after the fall of the monarchy in 1910 (president cake and ex-king cake were some of the attempts) - but always without success, since the cake was an important part of the tradition of several Portuguese families. On kings day we will tell you a little more about the origin of bolo-rei, but until then do not forget to place your order with us! . #confeitarianacional #lisboa #lisbon #confeitaria #patisserie #Portugal #confeitariacentenaria #pastelariacentenaria #lisbonfood #lisbonlovers #visitlisbon #lisbonfoodguide #lisbonhistory #lisbonbrunch #brunchlisboa #bolorei #bolodereis #diadereis https://www.instagram.com/p/CnFCPKnINyA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
