🔪 TERROR REPORTS - Latest Updates from Israel
ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
🔪TERROR - STABBING - (conflicting reports - Pardes Hana or Haifa) - Karkur intersection.. 3 people stabbed, 2 seriously wounded.  No other details at this time.
🔪TERROR - THWARTED - TEL AVIV AZRIELI.. Shin Bet thwarted a deadly attack on the Azrieli Towers & Mall in Tel Aviv that was planned by 5 residents of Taiba who established a terrorist infrastructure identified with ISIS.  The plan was to carry out an attack on the towers & shopping mall using a vehicle bomb.  Arrested.
🔪A CIVILIAN HAS DIED.. murdered in the Hadera terror stabbing, passed away from his wounds.  Raphael Mordechai Fischhoff , 35, of Hadera.  May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may G-d avenge his blood!
▪️HERO CIVILIAN WHO SURVIVED.. Hero of Israel Neria Siboni, the most seriously injured from the bus station shooting attack in Be’er Sheva this week, says: "I heard the terrorist's shots, I shouted ‘Shema Israel’ and ran towards him with bare hands. I knew I was taking him one on one."  The terrorist shot him with a bullet that punctured his lung, but he did not stop until he saw that the terrorist was eliminated. Only after checking that his wife was okay did he allow himself to collapse.
▪️RESCUED IN JUDEA-SAMARIA.. Lt. Col. Hisham Abraham, revealed that since the 7th October, the unit worked to rescue over 200 Israelis, including soldiers, who had entered “Palestinian” Area A and were in danger of their lives.
🔹US factors: Washington proposed to Israel that the US impose new economic sanctions on Iran instead of attacking and damaging economic targets.
▪️ON THE TEL AVIV PRAYER COURT DECISION.. the Rosh Yehudi organization cancels Yom Kippur prayer in the public space of Gan Meir in Tel Aviv, despite the Supreme Court's ruling. Although the court ruled in our favor, due to fear of provocations - Rosh Yehudi will hold Yom Kippur prayers in the synagogue at Bar Kochba 54, and not in Gan Meir.  In times of war, when our soldiers risk themselves in heroic battles, and when the whole nation prays for the return of our hostages in peace, the way to victory and the defeat of the enemy as well as the return of our hostages, is by adding holiness, unity and inner peace. Unfortunately, we heard plans to destroy this legal prayer as well.  We choose a responsible step.
💩ON “URGENT URGENT URGENT” LAUNCH ALERTS.. there is apparently an enemy propaganda campaign, unclear if for internal Arab consumption or to pressure Israel, of reports of missile launches and drone launches, regularly.  Here’s the latest:
.. Suicide Drones launched at Israel from Iraq!  Inbound!  Several hours until arrival.
.. Arab Report: Missiles to be launched from Iraq!
Hints of fake-ness:  Iraqi Shia-Iranian militias have suicide drones and cruise missiles, but in very limited quantity.  They regularly fire at Israel, but so far have never fired more than 3 at a time - and due to the terrain and countries in between, normally fire at either the Golan or Eilat.  Because of this they are minor threat, almost always detected and intercepted by the IDF prior to reaching Israel.  (They did get 1 through which killed 2 soldiers and wounded 20 in the Golan.)
These messages should be ignored by the public unless Home Front Command puts out an alert.
▪️The American-Israeli who was arrested in Lebanon by the Lebanese authorities was released to the US.
▪️AIR TRAVEL.. Air Europa updates will return flights to Israel on Oct. 21.
✡️A word of Torah: The Second Temple was destroyed because of causeless hatred. Perhaps the Third will be rebuilt because of causeless love. - Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, zt”l

(JTA) — In some ways, Itamar Ben-Gvir would seem an unlikely kingmaker in Israel’s upcoming election.
By his own count, the far-right provocateur and ultranationalist member of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, has been charged with crimes more than 50 times and convicted in eight cases, including once for providing support to a terrorist organization. After trying three times since 2019, he squeaked into the Knesset last year, when then-Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was unfit to serve as a minister. Months later, Ben-Gvir played a notable role in the leadup to Israel’s deadly conflict with Hamas.
Yet Ben-Gvir appears virtually assured of remaining part of Israel’s government after the upcoming Nov. 1 election, not just as a rank-and-file member of Knesset but as a senior minister — overtaking other right-wing politicians in influence and with Netanyahu directly contributing to his meteoric rise.
In a powerful indicator of Ben-Gvir’s mainstreaming, he was invited to participate last week in a mock debate held by Blich High School in Ramat Gan, a prestigious secular school famous for its role in hosting political candidates. His appearance there inflamed a nationwide debate about democracy and freedom of speech — and a screaming match between dueling protesters outside the school’s gates that required the intervention of dozens of police officers.
“Fascists, racists, you are enabling Hamas and Hezbollah. You want Israel to be a religious state, just like Iran and Saudi Arabia,” shouted one left-wing activist at the predominantly young religious boys and men holding signs in support of Ben-Gvir.
“Death to terrorists. Left-wing traitors, terror supporters. You don’t belong here, go home,” a far-right activist shouted back. Some chanted “May your village burn down,” a racist soccer hooligans’ slogan usually directed at Arabs.
The ascendance of Ben-Gvir and the far-right party he represents — Otzma Yehudit, Hebrew for Jewish Power — is among the most notable aspects of the upcoming election, Israel’s fifth in three years. A protege of Meir Kahane, the American-Israeli Jewish extremist-turned-politician who advocated for openly racist policies, Ben-Gvir was once shunned by political parties and by the media for his extremist positions, racist ideology and violent activity. He has gone from outcast to the in crowd in just a handful of years: Netanyahu, who understands that his political comeback depends on uniting Israel’s right, hosted Ben-Gvir and Religious Zionism party leader Bezalel Smotrich at his home in Caesarea last month.
Afterwards, they announced that they would all work together to ensure that the right wing prevails in November. Ben-Gvir and Smotrich combined their parties into one slate, which is now expected to win 12 or 13 seats of the Knesset’s 120. On Tuesday, Smotrich predicted that Ben-Gvir would wield great influence in the next government.
“According to the polling numbers, as of now, Itamar will certainly be a senior minister,” Smotrich said. “This is the meaning of democracy.”
The dynamic has observers straining to identify precedents. When else, anywhere, has an openly and proudly racist candidate with a criminal record of supporting a terrorist group seized so much influence?
“I’ve been trying to think of analogies and I think David Duke is one who comes to mind,” said Natan Sachs, an Israeli-American who directs the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution, referring to the racist and antisemitic leader of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States who unsuccessfully ran for governor in Louisiana in 1991.
“But he’s going to win a seat which David Duke never did, and he’s being pushed to do so and facilitated very openly and very personally by the former prime minister and the current head of the opposition,” he added. “This is a watershed moment for Israel.”

Weekly Update 5/3/19
Tumblr media
General Studies:
Reading: This week some friends focused on sorting, reading, and spelling Long U words (u_e cube, ue glue, ew drew, ui fruit, u music). We reviewed contractions (don’t- do not) by playing a fun caterpillar game. The goal was to match the correct set of words (on the legs) to its contraction (on the body).  We also reviewed adjectives, which are words that help describe a noun. Adjectives can tell us many things about a noun such as its size, color, shape, smell, taste, sound, and etc. Some  friends learned the poem “May” and focused on the sight words May, month, year, bird, flower.
May is the month Of sunshine and flowers Birds in their nests, And one or two showers. Games to play and kites to fly Or just looking at the sky. We could spend a year this way If the year were made of May.
We talked about the “ow” spelling pattern and made a list of words that use the pattern; shower, cow, down, brown, clown, now.
We have also been learning r-controlled vowels, where the r controls the vowels making it form a new sound when they are together like in the word bird. We also call it “the bossy r.”
Writing: The friends have started the new non-fiction writing unit. We focused on the difference between writing fictional and non-fictional books. We also reviewed the important of not plagiarizing and learned techniques to help us avoid this. We practiced this skill by reading non-fiction texts then wrote about the information we learned using our own words.
Math: This week some friends practiced their addition and subtraction fluency through interactive spring activities. For example, the Umbrella Subtraction activity focused on sorting subtraction facts (raindrops) by their differences. We also began our new unit that focuses on length, weight, and capacity.
Some friend reviewed the value of a penny, nickel and dime. They worked on adding and subtracting 10s and ones. As well as skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Additionally, the friends were introduced to the comparison symbols >, =, and < to compare pairs of two-digit numbers. The friends counted piles of change and then had to determine the correct symbols to draw designating the group with the larger amount. We use the alligator analogy to then identify the amount that is less. We practiced the language, “26 is greater than 20, 12 is less than 21, 32 is equal to three dimes and two pennies.”
Ivrit:
It was so wonderful to see all of our friends coming back from Pesach vacation eagerly ready to continue and expand their knowledge of what makes a Shchuna (neighborhood). They started by exploring Mekomot Tzibureim (public places) in the Shchuna. They walked in the rechov St. Marks leyad (near) Beit Sefer Luria. They also names Maafieh (bakery), Misada (restaurants), Beit Dirot (apt houses), Knesia (church), ve (and) gan gadol (public garden). Some friend began to describe the rechov they live on by listing ma yesh/ ayn barechov sheli (what I have/ don’t have in my street).
Yahadut:
This week in Yahadut the friends learned about Parashat Acharei Mot. We spoke a little bit about the service that the Kohen Gadol does on Yom Kippur. The friends used some familiar key words to figure out the date of Yom Kippur. The friends have been counting the omer each morning during tefillah. We spoke about why we count the omer as we are getting excited and ready for the upcoming holiday of Shavout. We have been preparing for Yom Haatzmaut.  The friends have been learning about three great leaders of Israel Theodore Hertzl, David Ben Gurion, and Golda Meir). We discussed what it means to have a homeland and why the Jewish people would choose Israel as a homeland, due to our connection to this special place.

7-9  Highlights and
Questions  of the Week
Week of April 24, 2017 -  תשע"ז
Learning Highlights
Language  Arts
Year 2: In Writing  Workshop, students continued to practice opinion writing through writing a  letter to a friend about a book they’ve read. We raised the level of thinking  by brainstorming more than one opinion about characters, favorite parts,  titles, pictures, and covers. In Reading Workshop, students learned to pause  at the end of a chapter or section, think about the main event that happened,  and jot it down on a Post-it note as a strategy to self-monitor comprehension  as they read.
Year 3: In Writers’  Workshop students started a new unit about opinion writing. Students learned  that opinion writers often observe the world around them, identify problems,  and offer solutions. In Readers’ Workshop, students started a new unit on  character studies. We are reading the fiction book Winn-Dixie as a class, and getting to know the main character  Opal. Students learned that the way a character acts and talks informs the  reader about their personality.
 Yahadut:
Mitzvot: We spent  some time reviewing the structure of Tanach (book/sefer, chapter/perek,  verse/pasuk) and began learning how halacha works (from the Torah to the Talmud to rabbis deciding halacha).
Nora’s  group: Students independently read about this week’s parasha and created a comic strip  depicting the laws outlined in this week’s parasha. We discussed the laws of Sefirat Haomer, including how and why the mitzvah is done and  studied the Torah source focusing on the text. Students also prepared for Yom Haatzmaut by learning about three  great leaders of Israel: Theodor Herzl, David Ben-Gurion, and Golda Meir.
 Ivrit:
Yerushalayim/ Tel Aviv
As an introduction to Yom Ha’atsmaut (Israel’s independence day), students learned about  Israel’s symbols like the Dead Sea, the Kotel, the flag… etc. Students  learned about Israel’s geography, and added locations to a blind map.
 Cultural:
Year 2:  Student began to learn about our solar system. They learned the names of each  of the planets, some key vocabulary terms and different characteristics about  each planet.
Year 3:  Students learned about minerals and how they are different from rocks. They  learned about different minerals, the different properties of minerals, and  how those properties are measured. We also conducted an experiment with a  mineral (salt) to see what happens over time after it is mixed with water.  Students recorded observations daily.
 Chumash:
Jaclyn’s Bereishit  group: We learned the story of Kayin and Hevel, and talked about making  choices about one’s actions.
Jaclyn’s Lech  Lecha group: We continued learning about the conversation between God and  Avraham about the destruction of Sodom, looking at Avraham’s arguments for  saving the city on behalf of a given number of righteous people.
Shirel’s  Bereshit Group: As a final unit assessment, students chose characters and wrote  about their choices, opinions and feelings, supporting their writing by psukim  from the narrative of Gan Eden. Students pretended to be reporters from  Gan Eden, and told the story, in addition to reading relevant psukim  that they chose.
 Math
Year 2: We finished  our challenge projects and presentations, and we presented our work to our  visiting math professor.
Year 3:  We  worked with plotting whole number fractions and unit fractions between whole  numbers on a number Line.
4th  Grade:   We used the addition of adjacent  angle measures to solve problems using a symbol for the unknown angle  measure.
Questions
Language  Arts
Year 2: Talk about  a book you read this week with your family and give your opinion about the  book. Did you have a favorite character or part of the story? Did any of the  pictures really stand out to you?
Year 3: Describe a  main character in the book you are reading? Explain why you described your  character in the way you did.
Yahadut:

KI TAVO
bs'd
Shalom.
The thought of this week of my book Healing Anger is
"The Vilna Gaon said, “The main purpose of a person’s life is to always intensify his efforts to change his character. Because if not, what point is there to being alive?”
Buy my book at http://www.feldheim.com/healing-anger.html
This article is based on the teachings of R' Yissachar Frand.
In order to continue writing my Divre Torah for the rest of the summer l'm asking for donations or dedications. You have the opportunity to share in the mitzvah to honor a loved one by sponsoring my weekly parsha review, or for refua shelema (healing), shiduch, Atzlacha (success), etc. To join the over 4,000 recipients in English and Spanish and receive these insights free on a weekly email, feedback, comments, which has been all around the world, or if you know any other Jew who is interested in receiving these insights weekly, contact me. Shabbat Shalom.
KI TAVO-Be Thankfull! This parsha begins with the mitzvah of bringing the First Fruits (Bikkurim) to the Bet HaMikdash. The fruits were brought to the Kohen and their presentation was accompanied by a declaration [1] which is a brief sketch of Jewish history expressing that the Land could never have been given to Israel without G-d's loving intervention. The offerer acknowledged his gratitude for all Hashem has done for him.
There is a Midrash[2] that in a play on words of the opening words of the Torah states that the world was created for the sake of “Reshit” [first]: The world was created for the sake of the people of Israel who is called “Reshit”. Likewise, the world was created for the sake of Torah, which is called “Reishit”. Finally, the world was created for the sake of the Mitzvah of Bikkurim, which is called also “Reishit”.
The Alshich points out that Bikkurim would not seem to be in list of the “top 3 mitzvot”, but here the Midrash says that the world was created for the sake of this mitzvah! What is the meaning of this Midrash?
He answers that the mitzvah of Bikkurim teaches something that is fundamental to every human being; our obligation to express gratitude (hakarat haTov). This is so basic and primary that the whole world’s creation was actualized just for this mitzvah, teaching and training us in the attribute of gratitude.
Chazal tell us[3], “There is nothing harder for the Almighty to live with (as it were) than an ungrateful person". The inability to show gratitude lies at the core of the first and most decisive sin at the very beginning of human history. The reason Adam was exiled from the Garden of Eden was due to his ingratitude. His sin was not merely eating from the Tree of Knowledge (Etz HaDaat). For that sin alone, perhaps he could have remained in Gan Eden. Had he taken responsibility for his action when Hashem confronted him, surely the punishment would have been far lighter. The straw that broke the camel’s back, was the fact that in response to G-d’s question why he ate from the Etz HaDaat, Adam said[4], “The woman you gave me to be with, she gave me the fruit and I ate it.” As Rashi points out, Adam was being ungrateful. Hashem presented him Chava as a gift and Adam complained that she 'caused' him to sin.
The Midrash continues that our ancestors in the Wilderness also angered G-d with their failure to recognize His Goodness towards them. They sadly complained about the Mann and bemoaned their “good old days” in Egypt when they had melons, cucumbers, and garlic.
The Midrash equates the sin of ingratitude with fundamental theological denial (kefira beiIkar) of the Almighty. Those who are ungrateful to his fellow men such as their children, boss, friends, spouse, parents, and neighbors will eventually come to deny the favors of the Almighty as well.
There are many stories about Gedolim. There are stories about their diligence in study; stories about their fear of Heaven; stories about their interpersonal kindness; stories about their sterling human character traits. These stories are all true in general (although each story about each particular Gadol may or may not be 100 percent accurate). However, regarding one attribute, we hear repeatedly how particularly careful the great men of Israel were about the attribute of HaKarat haTov.
Gedolim practiced what they preached. Rav Moshe Feinstein went to a wedding and gave the Chatan an envelope with a wedding present. After the Sheva Brerachot, the Chatan and Kallah were opening their envelopes and they found a check from Rabbi Moshe Feinstein from FDR Drive in Manhattan for $500 dollars. When this story took place (over 50 years ago), $500 was an enormous amount for a wedding gift. The Chatan told his father that he thought Rav Moshe must have added an extra zero on the check by mistake. The father, the chatan, and the Kallah went to Rav Moshe’s apartment and asked the great Torah sage whether he in fact had made a mistake in writing the check. Rav Moshe said, “If I could, I would give you a check for $5,000! Your grandfather was Rav Pessach Prushkin and I studied with your grandfather. I felt such gratitude to your zeida that I wanted to give you a big present; unfortunately I can’t afford to give you more than $500.”
The term "Jew" is derived from the name of Yaakov's fourth son, Yehudah. This name shares the same root as the Hebrew word hodaah, which has two meanings: acknowledgement and thankfulness. One who acknowledges G‑d's goodness and thanks Him and other people for the favors he receives is called a Yehudi [in reality admission and gratitude are one concept].
That is how fundamental Hakarat HaTov is. A person is only considered a “person” when he appreciates all the many favors that the Almighty and others do for each one of us no matter what the state of our life is. Our forefather Abraham abinu is commonly referred to as "The First Jew." As the first person to use his own cognitive abilities to discover and recognize the one G‑d, reject the idolatrous ways of his ancestors and contemporaries. He actively acknowledged, thanked and publicized the truth of Hashem and was prepared to give his very life for these goals. Abraham epitomized "Jewishness" many centuries before the term came into common use[5].
The Chafetz Chaim said at the end of his life “G-d, I wrote the Mishnah Berura, I wrote books on Lashon HaRah, I wrote this and I wrote that (the Chafetz Chaim was a prolific writer). However, he was not bragging. He was not saying, “Hashem look how much I’ve done for You.” On the contrary, he said “You, G-d, have given me the opportunity and the privilege to do all these things that I have done, now what can I do for You in exchange for all these privileges that You have given me?” This is someone who is Makir Tov. He went through life recognizing all that had been done for him. This is fundamental to being a human being and that is why Bikkurim, which is called ‘Reshit’, ranks up there with “for the sake of Torah", which is called ‘Reshit’ and for the sake of Israel, which is called ‘Reshit’.

KI TAVO
bs'd Shalom. ___________________________________ [1] Devarim 26:5-10. Netanyahu meets Putin as he makes desperate bid for Russian speaking voters ahead of knife-edge election
Benjamin Netanyahu dashed to Sochi yesterday to meet Vladimir Putin as part of an all-out campaign to win over key Russian-speaking Israeli voters ahead of next week’s election.  With the Israeli prime minister running neck and neck with his centrist rival ahead of Tuesday’s vote, his Likud party is pouring resources into winning over 800,000 Israeli voters from the former Soviet Union.   Likud believes these voters - referred to in Israel as “the Russians” even though they come from a number of ex-Communist states - could make the difference in the closely-fought race.   Mr Netanyahu’s decision to fly to Russia on one of the final days of the campaign is widely seen as an attempt to lure older Russian-Israelis, many of whom admire Mr Putin.  The trip also burnishes Mr Netanyahu’s effort to present himself as a global statesman on par with the world’s top leaders. Giant posters showing Mr Netanyahu shaking hands with Mr Putin and Donald Trump have gone up across Israel with the slogan “Netanyahu: a different league”.  Political posters showing Netanyahu with Putin, right hang from the Likud Center in Tel Aviv Credit:  Kobi Wolf/ Bloomberg Likud has also dramatically stepped up its Russian-language advertising in Russian areas as well as on social media. In cities like Rishon LeZion, which is around 20 per cent Russian, buses and billboards are plastered with ads in Cyrillic script.   “Everywhere there’s more advertising, on the street, on Facebook, on Instagram. You see posters of Bibi in Russian everywhere,” said Vladislav Serov, a 22-year-old who moved to Israel from St Petersburg four years ago.  The intense campaign is aimed at prying away votes from Avigdor Lieberman, Mr Netanyahu’s former defence minister who heads a political party that depends on Russian-Israelis for its base.  Mr Lieberman joined Mr Netanyahu’s coalition several times in the past but the two men fell out dramatically this spring, sending Israel plunging into an unprecedented second election this year.  Although Mr Lieberman is on the Right, he has indicated he could support Mr Netanyahu’s centrist rivals, the Blue & White coalition led by a former general. That gives a fresh urgency to Likud’s effort to take votes from Mr Lieberman and swing them to Mr Netanyahu.   “We are running an aggressive Russian campaign and Lieberman is feeling the heat,” said a senior Likud official. Current polling shows Mr Lieberman on course to win 10 parliamentary seats. Likud says it hopes to take at least two of them away from him.  While that may seem a modest electoral goal, it could make the difference in a close election. Both Likud and Blue & White won 35 seats in the April election but Mr Netanyahu was unable to form a government and called fresh elections.   Michael Raif, a Likud city councillor originally from Siberia, said his party had established a specific unit at its election headquarters to focus on Russian voters for the first time. “We realised that the Likud needs Russian voters and the only way to get them is by talking directly to the Russian community,” he said.  Most the roughly 1.3 million Russian Jews in Israel arrived in a large wave after the collapse of the Soviet Union. While many have assimilated easily into Israeli society, hundreds of thousands have struggled to learn Hebrew and integrate.  One problem is that many Russians arrived as older people and did not work in Israel long enough to build up pensions.  Others face suspicion from the state’s Orthodox religious authorities about whether they are truly Jewish because family records were lost in the Soviet Union. They are sometimes made to take DNA tests to prove their Judaism before state rabbis will agree to marry them.  On the streets of Rishon LeZion, Russian voters were divided between Mr Lieberman and Mr Netanyahu.  Jana Prisant, a 50-year-old office administrator, said supported Likud and that her community had given its votes to Mr Lieberman for too long. “For 20 years we’ve listened to Lieberman. I don’t want to listen to him anymore,” she said.  In the Gan Hai’r park, elderly Russian men gathered at long tables to play chess and debate politics. Many smelled heavily of alcohol in the midday sun.   Meir Ba’al Nes, a 63-year-old originally from Belarus, said he was backing Mr Lieberman. “I only believe in Lieberman. He’s a real man.” Mr Ba’al Nes said he was a Putin admirer but did not believe the Israeli prime minister’s claim to have close ties with the Russian leader. “I don’t buy that they have some special relationship. 80 per cent of us don’t buy it.”

Gold drifts lower as doller regains srength
Gold prices turned lower on Friday as the dollar regained ground after the U.S. Senate approved a budget blueprint for the 2018 fiscal year that will pave the way for Republicans to pursue a tax-cut package without Democratic support.
Spot gold had declined by 0.4 percent to $1,284.60 an ounce by 0355 GMT. It was down 1.6 percent for the week.
U.S. gold futures for December delivery were down 0.3 percent at $1,286.10 per ounce.
The Republican-controlled Senate voted for the budget measure late on Thursday by 51-to-49, which would add up to $1.5 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade in order to pay for proposed tax cuts.
“The dollar is up on account of the Senate vote… which in turn could pave the way for introducing a tax reform bill. That is seen as a cause for higher (interest) rates,” INTL FCStone analyst Edward Meir said.
The U.S. Federal Reserve is widely expected to raise its benchmark interest rate for the third time this year in December. Higher rates tend to boost the dollar, putting pressure on the greenback-denominated gold.
Meanwhile, a report that Trump was leaning toward Fed Governor Jerome Powell, who is perceived as a less hawkish candidate, as the next Fed chair had weighed on the dollar earlier in the session and lent some support to gold prices.
Trump concluded interviews with the five candidates, including current chief Janet Yellen, he is considering to chair the Fed and could announce a decision as early as next week, a source familiar with the process said on Thursday.
“The (gold) market has been fairly quiet lately. There has been some profit-taking. Importantly, there are no known headlines from North Korea or Iraq,” OCBC analyst Barnabas Gan said.
Geopolitical risks can boost demand for safe-haven assets such as gold and the Japanese yen.
“The ongoing Fed balance sheet tapering does give something for gold prices to point south into the year-end,” said Gan, adding that the most immediate support level for the metal would be at $1,280.
Elsewhere, the European Central Bank will say on Oct. 26 it will start trimming its monthly asset purchases to 40 billion euros from 60 billion euros in January, a Reuters poll found.
Spot gold may be rangebound between $1,278 and $1,291 per ounce for one day before seeking its next direction, Reuters technicals analyst Wang Tao said.
Silver and platinum both slipped 0.1 percent each to $17.17 an ounce and $920.80 an ounce. Palladium was up 0.5 percent at $963.23 an ounce.

Gold dips as dollar gains after U.S. Senate clears tax reform hurdle
