Some notes

A new fandom this month! Showtime SMP is new, bringing this up to 49 tags that I track.

Fics are still primarily in english, but we have three exceptions with significant spanish fics. Karmaland (750 of 857 are in spanish, from 740 last month), Tortillaland (109 of 115 are in spanish, down from 110 last month), and QSMP (827 of 8104 are in spanish, from 752 last month.)

QSMP also shows 43 fics in French, up from 39 last month, and 452 in Brasilian Portugese, up from 405 last month. While I did not check every language this month, I checked on the languages I knew had a fic in QSMP and we see 1 fic in ASL (probably a misclick as it appears to be in english), 1 fic in Bahasa Malaysia, 1 fic in Dansk (Danish), 1 fic in Deutsch (German), 1 fic in Esperanto, 1 fic in Filipino, 5 works in European Portugese, 2 fics in Polski (Polish), 7 fics in Русский (Russian) (up from 5 last month), 1 fic in Suomi (Finnish), 1 fic in Svenska (Swedish), 1 fic in Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese), and 3 fics in 中文-普通话 國語 (Mandarin Chinese, I believe). While a 한국어 (Korean) speaker was recently added to the QSMP, there are currently no fics in 한글 (written Korean).

In the small and micro-sized fandoms, several of the smaller fandoms posted a decrease, including Legacy SMP, Bear SMP, and Area Unknown. HBG, on the other hand, posted a frankly impressive 16-fic increase, and both New Life and Witchcraft saw a 8-fic increase.

In the mid-sized fandoms, the showstopper was Minecraft Diaries, which went up a staggering 140 fics, which makes me suspect a sub-tag got wrangled into them. Pirates SMP and Outsiders SMP both saw 20 fic increases, and Mystreet saw an increase of 24 fics.

In the post-canon big fandoms, Empires went up by 188 works, which is an increase on both January's 178 and December's 117, but not beating November's 240. Dream SMP's increase of 591 works is the single lowest number I've seen since I've started tracking tags, being exceeded by both January's 918 and December's 767, which were the first months I'd seen the increase being lower than a thousand. 3rd Life, now that we're outside of a season, posted a respectable 558 fics, down from last month's record high of 831.

In the currently airing big fandoms, Hermitcraft saw that new-season boom, as it posted 716 fics, not as high as January's 784 (holiday exchanges), but beating both December and November's 574 and 651. QSMP posted 729 fics this month, which is part of a four-month decline (865 last month, 894 the month before, 913 the month before), but is still the fandom with the single biggest increase over a month. Incidentally, that means that Dream SMP is beat by both Hermitcraft and QSMP this month, and 3rd life is close behind it.

Overall, the number of fics posted under Video Blogging-RPF (the umbrella fandom that contains all MCYT), is 3,513 fics, down from January's 4,223, December's 3,489, and November's 4,035. Incidentally, it's very close to what we saw last year at the same time, as February '23 saw a VB RPF increase of 3,674.

Trechire: Usually, as the bear forms a bond with us, and so recognizes our call and beats out all other competition.

Abnur: Competition?

Trechire: Nature’s furry warriors love to help a Warden in need. It’s their way of showing off. So yes, when a Warden sends their summons, there can be competition.

Abnur: I always meant to delve further into the Warden’s teachings and abilities via our letters. They aren’t very plentiful in Cyrodiil, but gods we could use every edge possible. It gets more and more frustrating every time refugees get preyed upon by the wildlife.

Trechire: I wish you would have said something. I would have come.

Abnur: Not you. Any other Warden, but not you. I didn’t have time for you to pepper me with questions over the Amulet.

Trechire: And how often did I do that in our letters?

Abnur: …

Trechire: That’s what I thought.

Abnur: Regardless, I had every right to be cautious. Only a fool wouldn’t have been. Not to mention you were...not in the right state of mind. Your grief would have clouded your sense of judgement.

Trechire: I do, especially after we continuously put them down. Even the dumbest animal alive would know to avoid the claws after they’ve been struck by them twice!

Abnur: That many have been slain? Serves me right, neglecting to at least browse over the reports…

Trechire: Oh no, not by Elsweyr’s own. I’ve met with several other pack leaders about the dragons. We agree not only are they perhaps the best prey we’ve ever had the chance to hunt, but they also greatly threaten our territories. Packs have been regrouping, quickly learning how to kill these beasts.

Abnur: So this has officially become some sort of game to lycanthropes?

Trechire: Yes, and be glad for that. I was the one who rallied the packs into this. Thanks to their thirst for such glory, the dragons have been kept at bay from escaping Elsweyr’s borders. Or, at least far from Elsweyr’s borders.

Abnur: I should have realized that. With Cadwell’s constant chatter, Khamira’s vigilance over my every move, and Euraxia’s forces strutting around, flying Imperial flags and making a mockery out of us, I’m spread thin. I can’t be expected to handle everything, or to retain my usual sharp focus.

Trechire: Good thing you have me, then.

Abnur: Perhaps. First I’ll have to see how you handle some wine before bed, and then I’ll comment if you’re worth all the animal fur left all over our equipment.

Trechire: We’re working with khajiit, you know?

Abnur: It isn’t khajiit fur. I’ve checked. I don’t even want to know how or why you brought a pony inside our barracks, just don’t make it a habit!

Abnur: Yes, but you have that Galerion charm. I’m certain your father could set fire to the nearest forest, turn around and smile, then easily talk his way out of any charges or suffer any reputation loss. How did the puddle-scrying necromancer put it? “Galerion knows how to warm a heart, so he can easily manipulate and maintain it.”

Abnur: That doesn’t offend you?

Trechire: Not at all. It isn’t wrong. Where do you think I learned my diplomacy and persuasion from?

What is Thrillerstruck? 

Thrillerstruck, or simply thrillerstuck, is a fan adventure comic based off of Andrew Hussie’s webcomic Homestuck. Thrillerstruck takes places in a completely different timeline and universe to Homestuck, and has it’s own original plot. Thrillerstruck still classifies as a fanventure, as the concept of sburb and the alien race trolls are all included in the story.

What is the plot of Thrillerstruck? (short version)

Thrillerstruck follows the story of four kids from the future who play a game called sburb and are guided by ‘sponsors’ who are an alien species, trolls. The trolls claim to have a book that has every single detail of the kids’ session written down. However, the book fails to mention the part of the session where everyone falls asleep for 567 years and they almost wipe everything from existence.

What is the plot of Thrillerstruck? (LONG version)

Thrillerstruck follows the story of four kids who live in a Earth set a few decades ahead of us. In 2021, the discovery of life outside our planet was made, and an alien species named Trolls made contact with us. The trolls were ... too far to reach us, so we could only communicate - and thankfully, as humanity is not quite ready for a troll invasion. Over the years though, the humans and trolls forged a friendly alliance, and began sending each other tech and exchanging information about the species’ lifestyle. By 2033, troll culture is largely normalised on Earth and it seems that humans’ prefer it that way.

The story truly starts when the trolls send a ‘secret weapon’, aka sburb, to the humans, but only certain people can access it. By certain people, you guessed it, it’s only accessible by the four kids.

It’s around this time the trolls of our main cast, a network of eleven specifically chosen trolls who work with the empress, begin to contact them, warning them of what to come but also informing them of the fact that them playing the game is inevitable. So the kids enter the game.

The game is not a doomed session or a void session, it’s actually just... normal. The trolls lead them through easily with the help of a pre-written description of everything that occurs in the session, until they hit a bump. The book describes the trolls and humans meeting, which then causes the trolls to admit something they’ve known the entire time: They don’t exist in the same universe. The trolls are actually the product universe of the kids session, and are using advanced technology given to them by the kids to communicate with them. 

Annnnd I think revealing any more would be massive spoilers, but here’s some hints: a willingly created boss, gays, death, paradox shit, and awkward family ties. It’s cool.

Can I read Thrillerstruck if I haven’t read homestuck?

If you really want to, yes, but there would be a lot of concepts that might not make sense. If worst comes to worst, you can google stuff.

How long is Thrillerstruck?

Don’t know! It definitely will not be as long as homestuck, but the plot is quite complex and I’m only writing act one just now, so there’s not a solid answer. The only thing I can confirm is it will probably be more than a thousand pages long, and have more than three acts.

When will act one be out?

Again, no idea! I’m writing each act fully before posting them, so after the act is finished being written, around 1-3 updates will come out each day with the illustrations. In the meantime, while I’m finishing up act one this ask blog will be open so you can get to know the characters and plot. Keep in mind, act one will actually be quite short in comparison to the following acts, so I don’t think the wait will be horribly long!

Who are the characters?

You can find info on the main 12 trolls here, but the kids do not feature on this ask blog (unless it’s relevant to the question). The four kids are half siblings Lacy Barosa and Leon Caliso, and (unknown to them) ectobiology siblings Kane Altshul and Deea Whitler. Art of Lacy and Leon can be found here, art of Deea here and here, and poor ol Kane hasn’t been posted anywhere yet. RIP Kane.

In terms of story? The blog is Cylene’s idea, created by Miocep and run by Visana, Naveen, Levian and occasionally Miocep himself. If a question is not specified towards a specific troll, one or more of those trolls will answer it. While the answers they give are canon, technically this blog isn’t. Author’s Note: I wrote this while bored working at the tiniest store ever. Also, my first Pristin writing, yay!!!

Downsides to your summer job in the smallest store in existence: it's cramped, all the tech is old, kids come mess up the store all the time. Upsides to the job: you get paid, you get to do whatever you want because only one person works there at a time. Oh yeah, and the hot girls that worked next door. What was once one of the millions of ice cream shops was now a café, named "Pristin" and the only people they hired were high school and college girls. The café mostly sold breakfast foods and coffee, but was also open for lunch and dinner. Today you were working the day shift and you realized another downside. The smell of breakfast wafting from next door made your empty stomach hurt. You had been in a rush to get out the door due to your own laziness this morning and had no time to eat, only time to grab some water and leave. And now you were paying for it. You couldn't leave the store to go get food so you just sat in torture waiting for things to do to distract yourself. Which wasn't much because it was dreary outside and the store was pretty clean when no one comes in. You were starting to go a little delirious when someone came in. You looked up and smiled at the person before you registered who it was. The girl was slim, one of those naturally skinny people. Her waitress apron was still around her waist and her shirt read "Pristin" on her left chest. Her smile was dazzling as she smiled back at you. You sat up straighter. You both exchanged hellos as her eyes looked over the wall of various video game characters and then over the wall of jewelry and accessories. "You guys are really going for that strict gender roles thing," she commented. You couldn't help but laugh lightly at the comment. "Some people still believe it's a thing, apparently." She laughed a bit and picked up a cloth headband. "Sorry to be a part of the gender binary, but I need this for work." You looked up at her perfectly placed hair and raised an eyebrow. "You do?" You asked skeptically as you rang up the headband. She pointed to her black bangs. "They get a little in the way." After handing you the money, she pulled off the tag and put the headband on. "As expected, just as pretty," you muttered under your breath to yourself. "Thank you." She winked at you as you handed her the change. You couldn't help the blood that rushed to your cheeks. "How long do you work today?" She asked you. "Until 6, so about 5 more hours," you said. Just then your stomach rumbled loudly, giving away your secret. "Do you need to eat?" She asked. "Oh I'm fine," you lied, not wanting to make a big deal of it. "I could bring you something from the café." "Really?" "I mean you'd have to pay for it but yeah." You laughed. "Okay. 'UnREAL' Boss on Getting the Show Back on Track in Season 3 After Creative Backlash From Fans (Exclusive)

UnREAL is righting the ship.

It's been 567 days since the provocative Lifetime drama -- about two women pulling the strings behind the scenes of a Bachelor-type dating show, Everlasting -- last aired on TV, and the prolonged hiatus may have been a blessing in disguise. UnREAL made a splash in the summer of 2015, earning critical acclaim and Emmy nominations for its commentary on modern-day feminism and for creating two of strongest female anti-heroes in Shiri Appleby's Rachel and Constance Zimmer's Quinn in recent memory.

The reaction to its divisive second season, however, was less rosy. Crippled by an overabundance of storylines, lack of focus and controversial hot-button issues (see: the Black Lives Matter-inspired police shooting episode), there was a sense that UnREAL had succumbed to the feared sophomore slump. The events of the finale were, in a way, reflective of the rocky season that was: Rachel's ex, Jeremy, kills two characters in a fatal car crash, leaving the fate of Everlasting in limbo. "There were a lot of plot points that we didn’t get to fully sit with," showrunner Stacy Rukeyser tells ET. "That is what we have a great opportunity to do in season three."

The new 10-episode season doesn't undo what went wrong creatively, but instead rectifies mishaps by leaning into the manipulation and bringing the focus squarely back on Rachel and Quinn. Unlike the first two installments, season three sees Rachel and Quinn wrangling a suitress, a beautiful, successful Silicon Valley venture capitalist named Serena (Caitlin FitzGerald), who has her own ideas on what needs to be done in order for her to find a husband on Everlasting. Ahead of Monday's season three premiere, Rukeyser sat down with ET to reflect on the lessons she learned from a the problematic sophomore season, how a suitress switches up the game and why Rachel will always side with Quinn, like a moth to a flame.

ET: You’ve said that there was too dramatic of a pendulum swing from the first season to season two in terms of the show’s creative approach. How are we going to see that reconciled in season three?

Stacy Rukeyser: There were a lot of plot points that we didn’t get to fully sit with and have the repercussions for these characters and the emotional effects. That is what we have a great opportunity to do in season three. When we looked at starting this season, I really sat in the hearts and in the souls of Rachel and Quinn. In particular, for Rachel, what she needs to deal with is what Jeremy did at the end of last season and what her own personal responsibility is in that. Did she or did she not produce Jeremy to do that? (In the season two finale, Jeremy causes a fatal car accident that kills Everlasting producer Coleman and contestant Yael, aka “Hot Rachel.”) When Jeremy comes back, he’s gotten sober and he’s gone through anger management, and Rachel does not take responsibility for that. That is a big part her journey for this season. She’s gone off to a goat farm and pledged essential honesty, but she’s not really being honest with herself and she has to unpack why that is -- why she is the way that she is. Quinn hires a real shrink Dr. Simon (played by Brandon Jay McLaren), a “real a** shrink” as we call him, and he helps Rachel go on that journey to look at where her darkness comes from. These are the emotional character arcs that are the essence of this season and the table was set by the plot points that happened at the end of last season.

Shiri Appleby told us last August that she believes season three is “much stronger than it was in the second season.” What specific conversations did you have with Shiri and Constance Zimmer about any concerns they had creatively about season two that you wanted to avoid moving forward?

We didn’t really have creative conversations with them until I had a season to pitch to them, and then they were very excited about what it was that we were going to do. We certainly heard the criticisms and certainly looked at them, but all I can do as a writer is try to write from a truthful place and I couldn’t ignore the plot points that had happened in the second season and pretended that they never happened. I had to write from that place and deal with it in a truthful way, but I also had the opportunity to bring in a female suitress, which really had nothing to do with what we had done in the seasons before. 

What did you want to bring to the conversation by introducing a suitress on Everlasting instead of featuring another suitor?

It’s a real opportunity to talk about gender politics in this country. I feel personally that a smart, strong woman is one of most frightening things to a lot of people in America. When we started writing the season and creating this character, Serena, everybody thought that Hillary Clinton was going to be president so there was a thought of like, “Really, is this still an issue?” But I saw the vitriol that Hillary Clinton experienced on the campaign trail and it became so clear to me that it was a real issue and an interesting one to explore. For me personally, I experienced what Serena experiences in the sense that my career was going really great, I was working my way up the ladder and the further I got, the harder it became to find a guy. That’s what’s happened to Serena, so much so that she’s decides to come on a reality show to try to find a husband -- that’s what it’s come to. It’s a chance to look at why is that, how are women supposed to be. We’re supposed to be “You go girl!” and aggressive at work and demanding more and more for ourselves, and then when we go out on a date, we’re supposed to turn completely into a different person, into a demure, more traditional, feminine type who allows a man to take the [reins]. Serena becomes an avatar for Rachel and Quinn. So much of the reason that Rachel brings Serena in is to prove to Quinn that she is lovable.

It’s one thing to say, “I’m fine on my own. I don’t need any of that because I have my career and my career is going great.” But in order for that to happen, your career really has to be banging and Quinn’s is not at this point. The show is about to be canceled, her career is taking a personal hit and Rachel sees that. She is trying to make a point to Quinn, which is made a little bit more challenging by the fact that Chet has a 24-year-old swimsuit model girlfriend.

How are you using this season to comment on the struggles that many successful working women face in the real world when it comes to finding love? Do you provide an answer by the end of the season or does it remain an ongoing question?

I don’t know that we provide an answer. I think that the answer is it’s challenging and it’s complicated. Feminism is complicated; who we are supposed to be as women these days is complicated. It’s not just about how should we be so that men like us, it’s also what kind of a man do we want to have? Part of what Serena has to figure out is does she want the alpha male who would be a person just like her and they would be a power couple or is it better for someone like her to be with a more beta guy who will let her be the star? What is the right choice in this day and age when so many more women are the primary breadwinners in the family? Just talking about those issues and telling those stories is new and revolutionary and a conversation we should be having.

UnREAL has always been about the different relationships between the women on the show: Rachel and Quinn, the female contestants on Everlasting. With a suitress now front and center with male contestants, how has that shifted the focus in that department?

That was a big part of the show. One of the big thematic things that we talk about is how toxic these shows really are -- how they pit the women against each other and how we as an audience get off on that. It also looked at the princess fantasy: All of these women are competing for a man, the man is the prize and you need to be skinny and look good in the hot tub, not talk too much about work, be desirable and not mind that he’s dating 20 other women at the same time as you. And he should, in exchange, pick you up in a helicopter and take you to Bali for dinner -- and that’s what romance look like. It’s true that we don’t have that [this season] and the men are, to a certain extent, harder to produce. It looks at it through a different frame: What do these men think about Serena and what do they think about having to compete for her affections? Why are they there? Who is sincere and who is not? And how humiliating is it, on some level, for a woman to feel like this is her best option of finding a husband?

At the start of the new season, many of the characters, especially Rachel, find themselves in completely different places, whether it be professionally or personally -- a rebirth of sorts. What challenges face them as they try to stay on a path that they're not as well-equipped to stay on?

For Rachel, it's very hard to be essentially honest because your job, by definition is to produce people which, in our world, means lie to them, manipulate them, get them to tell the story that you want. Rachel comes back thinking, nope, I'm going to do this job but I'm going to stay essential honest but by episode three or four, she is faced with a situation where it's Serena or Quinn. And any day of the week, she's going to choose Quinn over anyone else. 

Even after all the stunts Quinn has pulled?

Quinn and Rachel are the central love story of the series. You could also say it's a co-dependent relationship, but they are drawn to each other. For Rachel, the struggle is can she do her job and be honest? That will prove impossible. How will she deal with that? At the same time that she's going on this journey with Dr. Simon to unravel her past and why it makes her feel good to do the things that she does, she has to understand all of that. One of the things that is really important to us -- the stereotype is that women don't support each other at work and it's cutthroat -- we have a twist on that that's really interesting to me. I believe that Quinn really loves Rachel, that even Rachel is doing these challenging things that there's a reason for it, at least Quinn believes, but that at the soul level, she loves Rachel. Now here's another female producer coming along and it's interesting to see what she does with Madison.

Jeremy's arc has been perhaps the most interesting one to follow since season one and it's fair to say the character has been put through his paces. Are you viewing season three as a rehabilitation of the character?

I don't know that I necessarily thought of it as a rehabilitation season, but I do know that in terms of what Rachel has to deal with in getting honest and straight with herself, Jeremy was essential to that story because he's the only person who can be there to say, "You told me to do this." He has gotten sucked into this world even more so because he's in love with Rachel and to his lowest point, which is the end of season two, where he, because he thought he was saving her and because he thought she was asking him to, he killed two people. He has to come to terms with that. He's never going to be able to forget that. He is going to have to live with himself. He needed to be there as a tough reminder to Rachel that she can't get away with what she is saying is the truth now.

From the first two episodes, Serena is proving to be a suitress with her own plan and agenda. How are Rachel and Quinn navigating 

It's really important to Rachel that Serena is the feminist suitress. She's making a statement but not having a demure kindergarten teacher. The fact that this is a strong career woman makes a statement to Rachel. Quinn could not care about that kind of stuff. She wants a great season, she wants great ratings. Serena is insecure enough about being single in her 30s to be vulnerable when things don't go her way and the men aren't as immediately taken with her as she'd hoped. She goes down the road that Chet takes her own, in terms of saying, "This is how a woman should be," and that's horrifying for Rachel -- and Quinn, to a certain level. In the early part of the season, it's much more a battle between Rachel and Chet over which version of a woman Serena should be and if she should be her true self, which is strong and smart. Rachel develops a real personal relationship with the suitress and doesn't want to push her to do certain things and truly wants her to find the right person. She's more unwilling to do things to Serena than normal and more unwilling to do the things that Quinn wants her to do to get the story and the ratings.

The season also toys with the future of Everlasting and the fact that it is on the verge of cancellation. Have you seriously toyed with the idea of having UnREAL without Everlasting?

(Laughs.) People talk about that. Everything is up for discussion. The point about Everlasting possibly being canceled... I felt that when a contestant and a producer are in a car crash at the end of a season, that it would at least be put on hiatus for six months and maybe not come back. I do think that talking about relationships and men and women has been such a part of the fabric of UnREAL since the beginning, but look, at its heart it's a story about Quinn and Rachel. And wherever Quinn and Rachel go...

So it doesn't exactly matter if Everlasting is the show within UnREAL, as long as they're somehow involved.

Yeah, sure. It could be anything! But I also feel like there are many seasons left in the Everlasting format. Until men and women figure it out in the real world, we'll have stories to tell. (Laughs.)

Season four is already in the can and you're just now launching season three. How strange has it been to go back to stuff you filmed over a year ago? Did you view it as a gift to film back-to-back seasons without audience reaction?

I definitely viewed it as a gift and a real vote of confidence.
