Unfolding Pavilion: #OPENGIARDINI

The fourth Unfolding Pavilion opened on May 19 in the setting of the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale's vernissage. Following its previous editions, #OPENGIARDINI was dedicated to the Giardini della Biennale: the Venetian site featuring the highest concentration of modern architecture.

The Giardini Pubblici, commissioned by Napoleon in 1807 to provide a green lung for the densely built city of Venezia, was a public park designed by local architect Giannantonio Selva in the style of Neoclassical landscape gardens.  Permanent gallery spaces were built in the park beginning in 1895, with the opening of the first International Art Exhibition. The vast majority of the area has since been fenced off and given to the Biennale, removing it from public use. Currently, only one-third of the Giardini’s total surface area is open to the public, with the rest being accessible only during the visiting hours of the Art and Architecture Biennales.

The Giardini della Biennale, on the other hand, are not private property: they are located on public land that the City of Venezia freely grants to the Biennale in exchange for upkeep and security. In fact, when no exhibitions are taking place and the pavilions are closed, the entire Giardini could theoretically be open to the public for 6 months of the year. Nonetheless, access to the Biennale’s part of the park is restricted and controlled all year long by the system of gates, walls, fences, CCTV cameras, metal spikes, barbed wire, and armed guards that define the Giardini’s urban front.

The Unfolding Pavilion's most visible intervention was a large banner hung to the Lando Arch of Sant'Antonio di Castello. The banner, designed by Michele Galluzzo, was strategically placed in the public part of the Giardini, directly in front of the Biennale's entry gate, on the opposite side of the visual axis that ends with the British Pavilion. The banner featured an angry emoji face demanding ​​that the Giardini be returned to the people.

The pavilion's opening took place behind the Lando Arch. There, Laurian Ghiniţoiu's photographic project was exhibited: the result of several walks around the perimeter of the Giardini made to document the various devices by which the permeability and impermeability of the Biennale is negotiated in space.

The recent proliferation of the Biennale's hostile border devices has made it extremely difficult for people to "jump the fence" and sneak into the Giardini without tickets or invitations. However, the boats docked on the banks of the canal that runs through the Giardini, well within the Biennale's boundaries, indicate that the Biennale's border is not completely impenetrable. These boats are owned by Venetians who have been randomly assigned docking spots by the City of Venezia and thus require free access to their vehicles, crossing the Biennale's border without permission from the Biennale.

This network of conflicting interests has generated two territorial exceptions where the Giardini fence is interrupted by the canal: two weak points in the fortified perimeter of the Biennale where boat owners have developed their own system of access to the gated enclave. These unofficial entries are neither comfortable nor safe, and since the Biennale appears to have no intention of finding alternative solutions to the boat owners' situation, we thought we could at least try to make their entry routines easier and more dignified.

At the canal's southern end, behind the Greek pavilion, an arch with the sign #OPENGIARDINI topped the riverbank access. Alessandro Mason, Davide Tommaso Ferrando, and Lucas Geiger designed this portal to resemble a ceremonial doorway. Beyond the portal, three ladders installed to mediate the height differences led to a long red carpet that accompanied the walk to a rusty spiked fence. Red tape was applied to cover the rust, puffy clown noses were glued to the spikes, and a soft grip was installed where the boatmen hung to swing around the barrier. The red carpet extended all the way across the fence to the first docking stations.

At the opposite end of the canal, a steel ladder inserted in the thickness of the Giardini's brick wall on the back of the Austrian pavilion was improved with more reliable grips.

Built up during the exhibition preview, the majority of the installations were removed by Biennale staff in the following days, once entry to the Giardini became ticketed. Of course, we expected the Biennale's reaction: their removal of our unauthorized interventions, however, had the sole effect of making the boatmen's daily lives just as difficult as before.

10 consigli utili per.. CREARE UNA STANZA GUARDAROBA. Vi avanza una stanza? Mi spiego meglio, tutti abbiamo una camera da letto dove solitamente è presente un armadio. A seconda della metratura della casa e del periodo di appartenenza dell’immobile, dovremo anche avere una camerina. Ecco, voglio che oggi la protagonista sia proprio lei. Se non avete figli… come la usate? Dai, non ditemi che è diventata il vostro "metti tutto”, il refugium peccatorum delle borse da palestra e dell’asse da stiro! Mi sbaglio? Se fosse così possiamo sempre correre ai ripari! Anche in casa mia ne esiste una e nell’unico anno in cui ho abitato da sola quasi non sapevo come usarla fino a quando il mio fidanzato si trasferì da me e la trasformai nel mio fantastico boudoir. Credo che la mia adorabile metà sia l’unico uomo ad avere il doppio dei miei vestiti così, cedendo a lui quello che era stato il mio armadio, mi sono trovata "costretta" a modificare la stanza di fianco alla nostra trasformandola nella mia stanza guardaroba. Uno spasso! Perché non ci ho pensato prima? Lo consiglio a tutti. Ma come si organizza una camera rendendola un mega armadio di tutto rispetto e anche meravigliosamente funzionale? Facile… basta seguire i nostri gusti di interior design, le nostre necessità e la quantità di abiti ed accessori che accompagnano le nostre giornate. #cosanascondinellarmadio Ecco 10 preziosissimi consigli per trasformare il nostro caotico bazar in una opportunità di riorganizzazione e goduria visiva. Dopo averlo fatto ve la litigherete! #Alessandra;-) 1- Andiamo alla ricerca di mobili estrosi, possono anche provenire dal passato ed essere utilizzati con scopi diversi dalla loro progettazione iniziale. 2- Mai pensato a vecchie vetrine o scaffalature aperte che appartenevano ad una sala da pranzo? Molto divertenti per riporre le scarpe! 3- Procuriamoci un bel baule capiente, ce ne sono tantissimi per colore ed epoca, sono perfetti per custodire le borse nelle loro buste di stoffa. 3- Vecchie valigie…posizionate direttamente a terra, anche l’una sopra l’altra, sono decisamente belle oltre ad essere contenitori perfetti per la nostra collezione di occhiali da sole ed indumenti fuori stagione. Costumi da bagno? Sciarpe e cappelli? 4- La poltrona della nonna è un must have, molto chic se rivestita da una stoffa che si intona con la nostra personalità. 5- Optiamo per un divano letto, se vogliamo ospitare qualcuno, oppure per una chaise longue. Possono regalarci un momento di relax mentre riflettiamo sul ��cosa mi metto” con una tazza di caffè in mano. Ad una condizione…Non accatastiamoci i vestiti. 6- Consigliatissimo un piccolo tavolinetto di legno grezzo oppure una mini scrivania con tanto di computer, un bel vaso di vetro con i nostri fiori preferiti ed una sedia anche in plexiglass per creare un piacevole contrasto di stile. 7- Procuriamoci uno specchio “ a tutta figura” indispensabile per una stanza guardaroba. 8- È arrivato il momento di scegliere un armadio.. A vista? Chiuso? Vecchio, moderno? Questione di gusti. 9- Ingrandiamo una nostra foto in bianco e nero in formato mega gigante… la stanza guardaroba deve parlare di noi. Possiamo anche esagerare! 10- Teniamo a portata di mano un panchetto rivestito oppure una panca fondo letto, fosse matelassé regalerebbe alla nostra stanza un tocco di classe in più. Rivestimento a parte, lo scopo è quello di usarla come piccolo scaleo per arrivare ai ripiani piu’ alti dell’armadio senza dover manovrare il fastidioso “bastone acchiappa gruccia” con il rischio di farci colpire da un capospalla in pieno viso. Se queste idee vi danno già la voglia di sfrattare l’asse da stiro, ma non sapete dove andare a cercarle, rivolgetevi al mio amico nonché rivenditore di fiducia Tommaso Cianchi. Daily Dream Home: Isca Island

There aren’t too many opportunities in the world like this. Isca island is a rare private island close to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The large island is rich with typical Mediterranean vegetation including centuries-old olive trees. It houses the main villa, an annex, outside kitchen, storage rooms, pergolas and an antique cistern. The island is located a few hundred meters from  “Punta Campanella,” 500 meters from Crapolla and only 120m from the nearest point of the coast, it has an accessibility from the mainland that other islands do not have, often being isolated for bad weather.

The island of Capri and Positano are both within 10 km and reachable by sea. Sorrento is instead only 4km away, reachable by car. The islet, named by the fishermen of the Galluzzo site, in ancient times, had preserved for many centuries the remains of a large Roman villa.

Historians say that all buildings were on the slope overlooking the nearby coast. In later periods it was said to be a possession of the abbey of St. Peter. Immediately after the war Eduardo De Filippo, a great Italian writer and actor, bought the island from Vittorio Astarita, son of the well-known banker of Meta Tommaso. De Filippo used the island as a writing retreat calling it. “… a very sweet place, away from an adventurous and romantic idea, also because it is close to the coast.”

The main house was built by the De Filippo family and said to be in the same area where the domus of the ancient Roman villa was located. It is divided into two floors, a ground floor divided into six rooms, two bathrooms, two passageways and storage room and a first floor that has a large living room, three rooms, a gallery and four small compartments that may be joined.
