From a Legends (Legend’s) Point of View 2024

Background

From a Legends Point of View (or From a Legend’s Point of View, see what we did there?) is a Star Wars fandom fic event dedicated to celebrating the characters and stories of the Star Wars Legends continuity during and around the time of the Original Trilogy (OT).

Building from the talents of the many writers in the Star Wars fandom, we hope to develop and share a diverse collection of approximately 40 stories of pilots, smugglers, spies, scoundrels, and other characters from the original Star Wars Extended Universe in mid-September 2024.

How It Works

At signup, writers will each pitch at least three (up to five) different ideas for a fic of 5k-10k words to write for the collection. The pitches should focus on Legends characters or situations during the Original Trilogy and must fit the other story and pitch guidelines listed below.

Mods will review signups and assign one pitch from each writer to be written for the collection, with a goal of creating a collection with stories covering a variety of OT-era time periods, characters, and events.

Writers will submit their fics to a collection on Archive of Our Own (AO3), which will then be shared with the fandom.

Story and Pitch Guidelines

All stories should be set during or within six months of the events depicted in the Star Wars Original Trilogy films (0 BBY - 4ABY), and set within the main Star Wars galaxy (aka the Galaxy Far Far Away/GFFA).

Stories should focus on characters and/or events in the Star Wars Legends continuity, which can include any characters who appear in the three Original Trilogy films as well as characters from the Legends novels, comics, video games, or other materials.

Shipping guidelines: Stories should not be focused on romance or shipping and should not include smut. References to ships among characters in the story or among other characters are fine, but please limit these to mentions (for ships that do not include the point of view character) or subtext (for ships that do include the point of view character). Within these restrictions, any ships are allowed, regardless of whether they are considered canon in the Legends continuity.

Ratings and archive warnings: Any ratings or tags are allowed, as long as stories are appropriately tagged and follow the other story guidelines (e.g., no smut).

Each writer will submit at least three and up to five pitches for stories they would be willing to write for the collection. Across all the pitches, stories should feature a minimum of at least three different characters and a minimum of at least two different time periods during the OT. To ensure that we include a wide range of characters and stories in the collection, at least two pitches should feature a point of view character who is not one of the Original Trilogy main trio (Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo), and at least one pitch should feature a point of view character who is not another prominent OT character (Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO, Darth Vader), nor a member of the Rogue Squadron “Fab Four” (Wedge Antilles, Wes Janson, Tycho Celchu, Hobbie Klivian).

Stories for this collection are intended to add to the universe of fic we have for Legends; please do not submit pitches for stories you have already written and shared elsewhere, even if they fit the other guidelines.

Signup and Submission Details

Signups are now closed as of the end of the day June 2, 2024.

Once all signups have been reviewed, one of the mods will contact you via the information provided to let you know which one of your story pitches has been accepted (your assignment), and will provide instructions on how to submit your assignment to the collection.

We will also provide a signup form for people who would be willing to serve as a beta reader or cheerleader for other writers. Writers can request a beta reader when they sign up, or at any time before the beta request deadline (approximately two weeks before assignments are due). Betas may be available on a more limited basis after that deadline, but cannot be guaranteed.

Mods will check in with all writers twice over the course of the writing portion of the event to see how they are doing and connect them with a beta reader, cheerleader, or other assistance as needed. Please be sure to check your messages regularly and respond promptly to messages from the mods.

If you realize you will be unable to complete your assignment in time, please let the mods know as soon as possible, but definitely prior to the August 11 dropout deadline. That will enable us to reach out to find potential pinch hitters as needed.

Assignments are due Sunday, September 8 at any time. You will submit your fic via AO3, mods will confirm that it follows story and tagging guidelines, and it will be approved for the collection. The collection will be open for submissions a few weeks ahead of the deadline if you wish to submit early.

Because we intend to reveal these stories as a collection, please hold off on sharing or promoting your story until the full collection is released on September 15. After that time, please promote your story and others in the collection as much as possible!

2022 year in review

Number of stories posted to AO3: 6

Word count this year: 20,977 according to my AO3 stats, but there are probably a few thousand more in cut scenes and scrapped WIPs that didn't end up being posted.

Fandoms I wrote for: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies) and Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pairings: Every work I posted this year featured Gamora/Peter Quill and one with a dash of Gamora & Nebula. Stories with the most: – Kudos: stakes are high, water's rough (but this love is ours) – makes sense as it's the work I updated the most this year + there weren't many other new stories in the starmora tag on ao3 when it first started. – Bookmarks: same as above, surprisingly half of them are private. – Comment threads: also the same, again there being 10 chapters already def helps boost the number of comments. – Word count: once again, this love is ours sweeps with nearly 10k words.

Work(s) I'm most proud of (and why):

– tangled up with you all night: my first true attempt at writing smut. it was terrifying and probably took the longest to edit but with some help from a good friend of mine I was able to figure it out. I actually have no idea if it's good or not, guess I'll find out in a few months when going back and reading it won't give me the ick about my own writing.

– better off as lovers (not the other way around): maybe it's because it's the most recent work I've posted but I'm so excited about this. not only because I'm writing this for a friend but because for once I actually have the whole thing planned out, I just need to actually write it.

– kiss (chapter 6 of this love is ours): probably the best writing I did this year.

Work(s) I'm least proud of (and why): I wouldn't say I'm not proud of any of my works, but there are definitely a few I think are not my best if that makes sense.

Share or describe a favorite review you received: There are quite a few, I love any comment in general but my favorites tend to be the ones that respond to my rambles in author's notes or don't know much about stamora/the guardians but are still able to enjoy the story. knowing I've inspired someone to read more of my favorite team is the greatest compliment I could ever receive. I also love when Zoe remembers to comment on my works instead of containing their keyboard smashes in my DMs.

A time when writing was really, really hard: Anytime this past month. Real life and family have just been taking up the majority of my time and when I do find some to write I have zero motivation. Also again trying to write smut from a man's POV which I for some reason thought would be easier since I'm a lesbian but it was not lmao.

A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: Rocket's dialogue actually being in character in the first chapter of this love is ours. going back and rereading it I can hear bradley cooper's drunk new jersey uncle accent in my head.

A favorite excerpt of your writing: from chapter 6 of this love is ours

Gamora tells herself that this late night visit is no more than a friendly gesture towards a friend in mourning. She understands the tremendous loss Peter has suffered these past few days, and the nightmares and internal blame it brings upon someone. She also knows that despite him having told the others he would be fine earlier that night, Peter needed someone to be there for him, whether he knew that or not.  It’s a thoughtful, completely normal thing for a friend to do. So why is her heart pounding in her chest as she stands outside his quarters? Because they aren’t strictly friends anymore, there’s something else there now that Gamora’s made the “thing” a spoken one. She’s never had a romantic relationship before, hell she’d practically never had a platonic relationship before meeting him. Whatever this thing between them was is now uncharted territory, and Gamora has never been one to sail risky waters.

How did you grow as a writer this year? I actually wrote. before august it had been over five years since I had posted fanfiction and maybe three or four since I tried writing any. it's been a great outlet for me these past few months and I'm so thankful for it because I probably would have gone crazy without that.

How do you hope to grow next year: write more obviously. branch out and try posting for different fandoms to get out of my comfort zone if inspiration strikes.

Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc): the gotg hive group chat, specifically: kate, maggie, zoe, vic, and claire. I wouldn't have posted half the stuff I did this year without their support and nagging. mera who helped me tweak my smut and the rest of my friends who aren't that into gotg/marvel but still read my works and support me. taylor swift for her endless supply of title inspiration, and pete wentz for his obsession with writing songs about that sunset he watched with mikey way for inspiring better off as lovers.

Anything from your real life show up in your writing: my love for Britney Spears made a cameo or two, as well as drawing on some of my own fears of love and commitment and experiences with loss and grief to help understand the mindsets of certain characters.

Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: write whatever the fuck you want because no one else is going to cater exactly to you but yourself! don't worry about stats because they genuinely do not matter and are not a reflection of the quality of your work!! have fun!!!

Any projects you're looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I'm aiming to finish this love is ours before Vol 3 and better off as lovers by march or april. I'm so excited to start working on prompt fills for @starmoraweek2023! The release of Vol 3 will for sure be a flood of inspiration for all types of different stories whether the movie ends up being good or bad (I'm really, really hoping for good). I also want to post at least one completely bugborg centric work this year because they are criminally underrated and I want to write more sapphics! There are quite a few fandoms I'd like to give a shot at writing for, mainly sitcoms and such, but I'm not sure if I'll actually get to those.

The 74th entry in the Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters (M-74), also known as the Phantom Galaxy, became less of an apparition recently as images appeared online of its spectacular spirals courtesy of the European Space Agency. This catalog noted above consisted of 110 objects compiled by Charles Messier in 1774 and as later amended, became known as the Messier Catalog.

The Phantom Galaxy is a “grand design spiral” galaxy - a galaxy with well-defined arms that spin out from the galactic core. Following are two mandala-like images recently compiled with data from both the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes.

Why is it called the Phantom Galaxy? Simply, its surface brightness is low and it is better “viewed” in non visible light spectrums. Most likely the core of the galaxy consists of an intermediate mass black hole; intermediate in this case meaning approximately 10K solar masses in size. This unconfirmed black hole goes by the designation CXOU J013651.1+154547.

For astrological purposes, where in the universe is this phantom thing? More or less approximating for precession, the Phantom Galaxy, though “seen” within the constellation Pisces by sidereal orientation, weighs in geocentrically at 28 Aries 28. Most will note that for all intents and purposes it now squares Pluto in Capricorn slightly more than two degrees from exactitude. Curiously, the lord of the underworld was infamous for his helmet of invisibility and its use. Certainly this spectacular galaxy’s image rendering reaches out to cause a collective gasp for all who view it... a powerful, transformation inspiring gasp.

Pluto precisely squares M-74 on 25 January 2023. In August 2023 he retrogrades through another square and in late November 2023, forms the final direct square to the Phantom.

Eris in Aries currently stands about four degrees from precise alignment to the galaxy. Starting in 2038 and running through 2042, she conjoins M-74 several times.

But why did this image suddenly make all the news feeds now and end up in online posts? How useful is all this galactic crap, anyway?

More notable in the present, Haumea stands across the sky from the Phantom Galaxy, seven arc minutes short of an exact opposition. She will next exactly oppose M-74 on 8 September - just days away! In the middle of July 2023, Haumea, after a brief stint in Scorpio, stations within a half degree of being opposite M-74 again.

Back in the day when serialized story content came over radio, the tagline, “The Phantom knows” frequently titillated the ears of listeners. We know that phantoms love to linger in the rafters of opera houses. But those are of fictional imaging. What reality can be derived now from this galactic awareness now?

In Hawaiian lore, Haumea was a prolific creation goddess. She birthed Pele and other deity revered in the islands. She could summon lava as she wished. She held a makalei stick, which, when she put it in the water, attracted fish to feed the people. Haumea possessed fantastical abilities to create whatever was needed.

In space, the dwarf planet Haumea holds two known moons in her orbit and she has several large bodies of ice that follow within her orbit. This symbolizes the guttural assessment of what individuals belong in your inner circle and which are better suited as members of an entourage.

For practical purposes, Haumea encourages unabated creative pursuit of all known inspiration, without the consideration of what others (the competition) may be doing. Further, creative pursuit(s), when in progress can only be reviewed by those in the inner circle known to be honest, no matter what. If fact, better not to seek a critique from those who love you. Better to hire a pro to give comprehensive notes on what you seek to birth in this world.

Or not. With Haumea in opposition to this wonderfully evocative galaxy in Aries, perhaps entering the head down, “do not disturb” self-reliant mode is the way to go. Get in there and do what your spirit years for you to do, even if, especially if, you don’t know where the money is going to come from to put your inspiration in play. If mental funk is in your way, go online and check out the wide array of pics of M-74. Select your favorite. Go to one of those “print your image” places and get a hard copy (images of space are not subject to copyright). Hang the image somewhere where you can use it as a mandala in your meditations or frequently glance at it while you work. That should stir the creativity centers within and start them spinning the right way.

Given Haumea stations near the M-74 opposition July 2023, should you have not seen movement on your soul-driven “gotta do it” objective, go for a review of your plan and your cost analysis to make it real.

Use the Pluto transits to deliver the end game. In January 2023 with Pluto square M-74, it’s a great time to work out the numbers for your grand scheme. Work out an opulent budget as well as an “if we had to trim a corner we could do it for this” budget. Following the Haumea review in July 2023, as Pluto squares M-74 in August 2023 why not put your hand out and ask those in the fiscal position to aide and abet your efforts to do just that? Since Pluto is retrograde, based upon your revised budget, that is. Then as November 2023 rolls around, your pre-production, pre-launch tasks could be in the rear view mirror and you’re now underway.

These are collective transits and contingent upon those consciously seeking to find out what it is the phantom actually knows. It will be crowded out there with new ideas and concepts. Those who have cultivated the greatest visibility through inclusion of all spectrums of awareness go the farthest.

What about when Eris gets to the conjunction with M-74 between 2038 and 2042? Nothing like looking ahead! I predict a major reenvisioning of that thing known as the Internet. Actually this will be based upon a gathering of souls simultaneously realizing that searching for soulful sustenance on this platform may not provide the level of inclusion anticipated. Being an influencer with billions of followers may leave a person empty, feeling void and used. Collectively the goal of Eris to M-74 is for people to realize what is real and what is merely phantasmic and to include themselves into the ultimate of perfect fit realities. And, oh by the way, to fulfill all soulful creative desires.

Hi, friends! I hit a follower milestone not too long ago - thank you thank you thank you! Like I did for some other milestones, I wanted to share some of my writing. So here is the first chapter of my big WIP, the one I laid out almost a year ago, the one where Big Things Happen to Poe and Finn Does Big Things, the one that got stuck several times but is now moving nicely thanks to NaNoWriMo. (I’ve added another 10k already - and it’s only halfway through November! Yay!) It’s not much--a long introduction, really. But there is so much going on in this story, I can’t wait to finish it and share it!  So thank you - and enjoy! There is more below the break - and more to come! :) EDIT: This story is now posted! Chapter One  

Poe Dameron is bored.

There are at least a dozen different things he should do, from reviewing the latest intelligence data to the briefing with Connix he keeps putting off; from going over the maintenance specs on the two Y-wings they'd found abandoned on Dantooine (and wouldn't he rather be working on ships instead of always reading about them) to the tactical, medical, and supply reports for their new base of operations. And that doesn't even include the constant stream of communication with the New Republic and various other planetary governments that Poe dislikes because he's terrible at it, lacking the patience and tact necessary for sensitive diplomatic discussions.

There is always something to do now that the war is over, and yet sometimes Poe wants nothing to do with it. It had been good at first, in the heady days after Exegol when they'd been so relieved to finally stop fighting, ready to move on and rebuild the galaxy they'd fought so hard to preserve. The galaxy had believed in them, had listened to them, because they'd destroyed an entire Sith Fleet, hadn't they? Leia Organa had been telling them for years that they were in danger; she'd been more right than anyone could have possibly imagined, and it was her Resistance that had saved them.

And yet, six months later, it's as if the galaxy has already forgotten the lessons of the past. After skirmishes with both the Resistance fleet and the New Republic, the First Order finally surrendered, and every day it seems a new treaty is being signed somewhere to ensure peace.  In most parts of the galaxy, planets are rebuilding, and that peace seems to be slowly settling. Yet the one thing they need most now is the one thing no one will even consider. They don't need more diplomats, or treaties, or promises to sign more treaties with more diplomats; they need security, and no one will listen to him.

Poe isn't bored; he is frustrated.

The New Republic is still slow in pulling itself together, has been since the destruction of the Hosnian system. The fall of the First Order has splintered it even more as some systems call for a more central government to bring stability to the galaxy, while others maintain they will remain independent. It's the same argument, the same players; an endless cycle, it seems, of war and peace.

The galaxy doesn't need a central set of governing principles—recent history has proven the near impossibility of such a thing.  Better to step back and let memories of oppression fade. Yet the discord between so many opposing philosophies after the fall of the Empire had allowed the First Order to settle in the Unknown Regions and slowly build its fleet, as well as its power. That can't be allowed to happen again.

Poe believes more than anything that now is the time to put in place new organizations to maintain security in the galaxy. He isn't calling for a governing military power; both the Empire and the First Order showed that military strength could be defeated. No, they need people in the Outer Rim, and the Unknown Territories, even Wild Space, guarding them against another Exegol, another Sith Fleet. It had been too easy for Palpatine to disappear into deep space and spend decades rebuilding. The New Republic needs to make sure it never happens again. Poe has been suggesting it for months, has volunteered to lead a division of the New Republic Navy devoted to patrolling the borders of deep space and gathering intelligence. Yet no one bothers to listen anymore, and they’ve found little support outside of a handful of allies who scraped together a few starfighters and a small cruiser for them.

It will happen again if there is no one to stop it. They know that something is happening out there already. They are rumors of entire villages being wiped out on distant worlds, and Poe had hoped that after Exegol, their word would be taken seriously. Apparently, that isn't the case; the New Republic is turning a blind eye yet again. Small villages on backwater planets apparently aren't worthy of concern.

It has been weeks since Poe has been up in his X-wing, and he misses it, wishes he was back in the cockpit making a difference, even if it's only recon and intelligence gathering. But more than that, he wishes the Senate would listen to him before another First Order springs up from the birthplace of the old.

Poe spends the morning helping set up more rooms in their new base, an impersonal prefab monstrosity some Senator had sent over as a thank-you gift to the freedom fighters who had saved the galaxy from a fleet of Sith Star Destroyers. Sure, they aren't sharing quarters in a cave any more, or sleeping in tents, but there is something about it that feels different, almost wrong. Maybe he isn't used to something so permanent, this symbol of victory— or of life moving on when he feels stuck.

Maybe it's too much like a consolation prize, a way to get them to stop talking about new threats when the galaxy wants to forget the old. The building reminds him of everything that needs to be done but isn't, everything that is happening and yet being ignored, and sometimes he is tempted to go back to the cave. He needs ships and people, not bricks and mortar.

After lunch Poe forces himself to find Connix and Kin and sit through the briefing. There is no news on Poe's latest appeal for funding the proposed Sentinel program. The criminal gangs that have grown in the vacuum of the First Order's sudden withdrawal are growing bolder and the Senate doesn't seem to be doing anything about them either. The New Republic is still a struggling morass of governments who can't agree on a damn thing, other than the Resistance is getting mouthy and needs to step back and let them handle it now. Some days it feels as hopeless as fighting the First Order. How had Leia done it, after the fall of the Empire?

Kin starts to go over his intelligence reports, but Poe stops listening and stares out the window, his leg bouncing restlessly. He tosses a speeder bolt from his pocket up in the air and resists the urge to spin around in his chair like a cadet. He thinks he hears something about another village attack, about Vi Moradi, about something going down on Nar Shadda, but he is too distracted.

Connix begins to go over the state of their new headquarters—it has only been a week since they moved in—and says something about a volcanic eruption on the other side of the moon that is threatening to rain down fire monkey piss. Poe frowns, wondering if he's heard her right. "What?" he asks. "Did you say fire monkey piss?"

"Yes, General," she replies.

"Is that a real thing?"

"Of course it is. From the volcano."

"What volcano?"

"There is no volcano," she tells him, shaking her head with a smile. "But it got your attention, didn't it?"

"Sorry," he says. "Kind of distracted, I guess."

Connix exchanges a look with Beaumont Kin, who shrugs and goes back to his datapad. She smiles, which Poe knows is her way of softening the coming blow. "Why don't you take a look at the Y-wings, sir? Commander Pava said she's making good progress. The Falcon should be back soon."

Damn, she knows him too well. He jumps up with a sheepish grin and leaves as fast as he can. Only to be kicked out of the landing area by Jess, then the maintenance area by Rose, and even the medical area by Dr. Khurana. So he finds BB-8 and goes for a walk, trying to work off the restless energy that is plaguing him that day. If he's honest, it’s been building for weeks, and it started not long after Finn left.

Finn is currently on his way back from an extended mission with Chewbacca, their official goal to search for other Stormtroopers who defected from the First Order after the surrender. In truth, they are the Resistance's unofficial eyes and ears at the borders, making contacts with every operative they can, gathering the intelligence they need to maintain the borders when the New Republic won't. They are the beginning of the proposed Sentinel program. Poe did the same thing before Finn had left, and Finn before him; they agreed to take turns, alternating their time away so that one of them is always around to deal with the New Republic.

Unfortunately, it also means they have barely seen one another for the last six weeks, and Poe misses Finn—going out on missions with him, leading with him. They make a good team, and in the weeks and months since Exegol, they've grown even closer. Not as close as Poe would like, but maybe someday. He thinks about it more and more, wonders if Finn feels the same. Of course, they’d have to be on the same planet at the same time.  And one of them would have to work up the courage to say something to the other. Poe’s still too scared to lose what he does have, so it probably won’t be him.

At least Finn finally told Poe that he is Force sensitive. It makes so much sense—so many things had clicked into place—that Poe often wonders how he hadn't figured it out himself. Finn is a natural leader, a brilliant fighter, and so in touch with his sense of self that of course it is the Force guiding him. He will be a great Jedi—maybe not a warrior, as Finn seems less interested in fighting now, but he could be a teacher, a leader.

Rey is training him, to help him understand his powers and learn some basic techniques. He trains in addition to his duties with the Resistance, and Poe worries about him. He feels like sometimes Finn struggles to find a balance between the two and hopes Rey isn't pushing him too hard. She went with Finn and Chewie, to continue working with him.

The Falcon has been gone for two weeks. They ran into a few remnants of the First Order, but nothing major, and Poe isn't sure if they've gathered any important intel other than what they felt safe transmitting.  They are returning several days early, and Poe is glad. He's missed them all, though if he admits it to himself, he's missed Finn more than anything, maybe even flying. He's grown so used to having Finn by his side over the past year, through the mission to Exegol, and as co-Generals, that he's felt almost incomplete the last six weeks.

And that’s the real problem: Poe is distracted. Finn is coming back, and Poe can't concentrate. It probably doesn't say a lot about his leadership skills, or his emotional state, but it's definitely the issue, and he continues around the lake again, talking with BB-8 about Finn and Rey and how much they have to catch up on when they return. If he complains about the New Republic and their lack of organization and support yet again, BB-8 has the good grace to listen and agree when he's already heard it a hundred times.

He goes around the entire lake a second time, ignoring the sun and the heat and the need for some water, and is about to start a third time when the little droid beeps excitedly and tells him that the Falcon has landed. Poe can't hold back a grin, and they hurry to the landing area as fast as they can.

The Falcon is in its usual place, and Chewbacca is coming down the ramp with some bags. Poe greets him warmly while BB-8 asks impatiently about Finn and Rey. Chewie tells them Finn's gone to find Poe.

"Only Connix said she kicked you out of your own briefing," says a voice behind them, and Poe turns to find Finn standing there, hands on his hips and a crooked grin on his face. "Because you couldn't concentrate."

Poe grins in response, closing the gap between them to pull Finn into a warm embrace. Maybe they aren't reuniting after a battle, but it has been a long time and Poe can't help it. He missed Finn and is relieved to see him—and Chewbacca, of course—unharmed when he knows anything could happen along the borders of unknown space. And he likes the feeling of Finn in his arms too much to resist holding him for a little longer than he probably should.

"Welcome back, buddy," he says, finally stepping back, but still holding onto Finn's arm.

"That's General Buddy," Finn laughs, and Poe rolls his eyes.

"That joke is getting old, you know," he tells him. "How are you? Where's Rey?" Apparently, that is the wrong thing to ask, because Finn's smile immediately disappears. Poe feels his stomach drop; has something happened to her? Why haven't they said anything?

"She's fine," Finn says, relaxing as he shakes his head. "You don't have to panic. She…well, she left. Went off on her own. Again."

Poe doesn't need the Force to know that Finn is upset about it, and in a way, he understands. Rey certainly does her fair share of running off by herself,  headlong into danger, and often without saying anything. Having worked many solo missions himself, however, Poe can also understand why. Sometimes working alone is easier, with less responsibility, less chance of getting someone hurt or killed. Get in, get it done, get out.

And Rey had grown up alone, abandoned on Jakku for years, until Finn had appeared and quite literally dragged her out of her solitary existence. It makes sense that after so many years on her own, sometimes she needs to be by herself. And Poe understands that as well: though most people wouldn't believe it, he needs time alone almost as much as he needs to be with people. It is one reason why he's such a good pilot, because he likes spending time in the cockpit with his own thoughts. And BB-8, of course.

Finn, however, had grown up surrounded by other Stormtroopers, never having a minute to himself yet always alone in a system that discouraged individuality and attachment. Finn seems to crave contact and companionship, and though he understands when someone like Poe needs their space for a little while, Rey's stubborn desire to go off on her own without warning—or protection— is still something Finn finds frustrating even after all this time.

"I see," says Poe, though he doesn't know the first thing about it, other than Rey is gone, he hadn't got to say goodbye, and Finn is upset. "Well, I'm damn glad to see you, and I have all sorts of questions, but I won't bother you yet. Want to see your new room?"

Finn’s eyes light up and he smiles gratefully at Poe. "Yeah, I would. I'm sorry you had to handle the big move without me."

"It's not like we had a lot to move," Poe points out. "We were living in a cave, remember?"

Poe leads him down the path to the new building, set in a clearing not far from their expanded landing area. It is a large, three-story building, housing offices on the ground floor with crew quarters on the upper floors. Finn and Poe, as co-generals, have two of the larger rooms on the second floor. Poe guides him upstairs, shows him the code for the door, and motions him inside.

Finn stops a few steps into the room, gazing around with his mouth literally hanging open. They are in a large open area, with a sofa and chair along one wall, and a desk opposite. There is a small kitchenette tucked into the corner with table for eating, and a door leads to the single bedroom and private refresher. It is clean and new and bright, unlike any place they’ve ever lived. There is both wonder and gratitude in Finn’s eyes, and the look on his face right now is one Poe wishes he could see more.

“Are you serious?” Finn asks as he starts moving around, examining his new home. “This is all mine?”

“I’m not going to show you someone else’s room,” Poe laughs. “It’s all yours. it’s not much. It’s just a lot better than—”

“Living in a cave,” Finn finishes. “Or a ship. Or a tent. Poe, we’re in an actual building!”

“I know, buddy. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s good.” He glances around and smiles. “And I’m right across the hall, if you ever need anything. Like a lesson how to use some of this stuff.” He gestures toward a small communications panel set into the desk.

“It’s perfect,” Finn says. “I can’t wait to get a good night’s sleep in here!”

Poe nods. “You’ll sleep like a baby—or you’ll miss the jungle so much you won’t sleep at all. I’ll let you get settled, maybe try out the fresher—it’s private, all yours.” Finn pumps his fist and Poe laughs again. “Think you’ll be up for a debrief later?”

Finn nods. “Yeah, give me an hour. Where should we meet?”

“Command center is on the ground floor, we either pull up chairs or move to the conference room. Is an hour enough?”

“More than enough,” Finn tells him. He turns and walks back to Poe, pulls him into another embrace. “Thank you,” he says quietly. Poe breathes him in, his heart skipping a beat at their closeness. It seems Finn being gone has definitely had an effect on Poe.

“You’re welcome,” he finally says. Finn steps back and Poe thinks the other man glances down at his lips before ducking his head with a smile. It’s probably wishful thinking, though. Poe has to deliberately look away from Finn’s mouth.

“It’s really good to see you,” Finn says.

“You too, buddy,” Poe says. “I’m glad you’re back. I’ll see you in an hour?”

Finn nods and Poe turns to leave. He really is glad to see Finn. He’s just not sure how to move forward now that Finn has returned.

i wish more than anything i hadn’t had it spoiled for me. i’m not one to really care about spoilers but this one gutted me, and took away what would have been an amazing surprise. so a big fuck you to the person who posted that spoiler. 

i also wish i hadn’t read the reviews. i kept bracing myself for something galaxy brain to happen like TFA, or maybe it would be boring like TLJ, or nothing would make sense. but the entire time, all i could think was “i don’t hate this.” i saw some reviews that bashed the thematic consistency, but i thought the whole thing was pretty tightly wrought in terms of the glaring disney moral.

it was a bit of a mess, pacing-wise (but pacing is a problem through the entire skywalker saga), and went several directions i didn’t anticipate, and none of it would have worked without adam driver’s phenomenal performance, which lifted his entire plot arc from “hey this is pretty good” to “holy shit.”

but. i think i loved it? idk. maybe tomorrow i’ll wake up and change my mind. i can say with certainty it knocked me on my ass, and took way more risks than TFA and TLJ combined. i guess to some people those risks didn’t pay off, but i admire any narrative that can stick to its guns.

i’m not sure if i’ll be writing sw fic right away, but i’d very much like to read a good fixit -- one of those 10k, lowercase-hozier-lyric-title, artsy slowburn motherfuckers -- and if one isn’t written yet, i might make an attempt. i don’t normally write canon but i’d like to try.
