Just today I finally finished these generation 3 styled sprites of some regional forms for a ROM hack I'm working on. Wanted to show them off and also share in case anyone else wants to use (or improve!)

Galarian Slowpoke Line

Say, what's the deal with Galarian Slowpoke?

(And Slowbro and Slowking, for that matter.)

Slowpoke is a Pokémon that probably most people are familiar with. Described by Bulbapedia as "(resembling) a cross between a salamander and a hippopotamus", these pudgy giant otter Pokemon are well known for their pale pink color, and their sluggish and dopey dispositions. They r sleeby boys.

However, with Pokemon's Generation 8, the Galar region introduced an unusual new variant of the Slowpoke. We'll call this one "Slowpoke, but its scalp and tail are recolored yellow":

In Pokemon lore, Galarian Slowpoke get their unusual coloring from a food that grows in the Galar region - a spicy seed that is popular for its use in curries. In real life, curry is seasoned with all kinds of herbs and spices, and one of those, while not particularly spicy in real life, absolutely does have strong dyeing properties: turmeric.

See, turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin. It's responsible for turmeric's vivid orange coloration, and great at turning anything it touches a bright yellow. When it's not causing accidental curry-related stains, it's often used intentionally as a dye.

So yeah, that's pretty open-and-shut. Galarian Slowpoke is a curry fiend (as seen in the anime), and has consumed so much Fantasy Curry Seasoning that its tail has turned yellow and spicy, in a fun reference to the real-world phenomenon where white Brits claim credit for the existence of curry popularity of curry in Great Britain.

HOWEVER. When it comes time to evolve, Galarian Slowpoke once again throws us a curveball. See, whenever it's bitten by a Shellder (either on the head or the arm), a chemical reaction is triggered that turns that bright yellow coloring into a vivid purple.

From the standpoint of simple character design, this shift in coloration is pretty important - it hints at Slowbro or Slowking's transition from a pure Psychic type (in its Galarian form) to Psychic/Poison. That's right, this bad boy is full of toxins, which Pokemon is highly fond of associating with the color purple.

But what if I told you this could also be a dye reference?

That's right, Tumblypoos, I'm here to talk about snails. Specifically, the Murex snail, which was known from the 13th to 15th centuries as the best source of much-coveted purple dye, via a chemical compound that appears in the snails' mucus.

Obviously Slowbro and Slowking aren't mollusks, but the Pokemon responsible for their evolution sure is. And while Shellder usually looks like a plain old clam, once it's bitten onto a Slowpoke, its shell takes on a dramatically different shape - one that's strikingly similar to the shells of turban snails.

So yeah! Snail dye. Is that cool or what?

She's a reserved PKMN who only tends to make noise when she moves. Zom met her whilst on his way to fight Cynthia on Victory Road. Some team Galactic grunts were causeing issues and Steelix was trying to defend the other PKMN from being caught. Zom helped stop team Galactic and Steelix chose to come with him. Now adays she protects the others by scaring off everyone.

A duo that's hardly seperated. Dex is the talkative one, though they're strong headed. Phone is sarcastic and the lazier one. Zom caught them at the same time and ended up posseing his Pokedex and Phone in there respective regions; Dex in Alola, Phone in Galar. Neither are really used in battles but can if they want. They also like to cause issues but that's for later

Meeting a Grookey that ended up in more than he can chew; Zom and Roserade free him. Turns out Grookey is the Professer's but he endes up tagging along. He was always more adventureous so he always found hidden areas that Zom would explore. As per the Grookey line, he's very attached to his drum and sticks; if they get damaged Rillaboom ends up moody.

He acts like a lap dog, he's not a lap dog. Arcanine was from an egg he got from his Aunt, she wanted hime to learn how to care for PKMN eggs. Since then Arcanine has been loyal to Zom since. When he's out in battle becomes completely serious. Getting thrown into Twisted Wonderland he was cold to pretty much everyone; though now he's mellowed out a bit.

Slowking can comunicate through telepathy, so she's one of the few PKMN people can (kinda) understand. She's intelligent as most Slowking's are; she one of the PKMN that made sure Ramshakle wouldn't fall apart. Zom notices that she sometimes separates from Shellder from time to time, they usually stay near each other though. Zom also has her watch the "Braincell Trio".

Knell was discovered as a baby Joltik, having been abandoned by her mother - most likely due to the Galvantula mother seeing the colour morph as a sign of sickness. She loves to run, constantly racing with her teammates whenever they have their daily camps - especially Teivul. She’s also the first to get excited over curry, or any food for that matter.

Náæta was found in the outskirts of Stow-On-Side, and her evolving was accidental during a camping date with Gordie - as the location to grant evolution was unknown to me at the time. She’s usually seen watching and observing from behind, seemingly either nervous or not interested in meeting new trainers. She’s widely considered the most well-trained member of the team.

Daybreaker was found as a Slowpoke after accidentally boarding a Corviknight Taxi Service, and her clear amusement at what happened is what helped me decide to catch her and add her to the team. She is quite sassy, and melodramatic at best. However, she is also very sociable - and adores when the attention is all on her.

Vēnātrīx was discovered after the law exposed an illegal breeding program taking place; I found her whilst I was helping Gym Leader Milo sort them out, and she was completely ostracised by the other Hatenna - so I took her in as my own. She is very stubborn, close to impossible to budge when she’s made her mind up. However, she also gets excited by things very easy - commonly seen with a giddy attitude.

Teivul was given to me by Dojo Master Mustard after I completed all three trials given to me, and we trained together closely for a long time. She’s usually seen meditating, training or helping me with my physical tasks. She’s very big on the idea of teamwork and friendship, and has been mistaken as my main partner Pokémon multiple times.

Enora is my starter and partner Pokémon, being found when she was a baby Applin when visiting Turffield with my mentor: Kora. She is super bubbly and always eager to make new friends every chance she gets, commonly struggling to read the room because of this. She is the only survivor of the original team, and is considered an ex-champion alongside me.
