More Wheel of Time News!
Sorry if this isn't comic related but I love these books and the show and want to share more stuff about it.
So some spoiler free info for show onlys
Last season we met the amazing Elayne Trakand, one of my favorite characters and the Crown Princess of Andor, the kingdom all of our main kids are from and the most powerful nation on the continent
Tumblr media
This season we are meeting her family
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left to right)
Olivia Williams plays Queen Morgase Trakand, Elayne's mother and the Queen of Andor. Skilled politician who came to power in a succession crisis she is canny negotiator but also loves and cares for her people.
Callum Kerr as Gawyn Trakand. Elayne's brother who is fiercely protective of her, and goes to the White Tower to train to possibly become her Warder; already being considered a great warrior
Luke Fetherston as Galad Trakand. Elayne's other brother who is considered possibly a greater warrior than his brother and is considered one of the most beautiful men in the kingdom.
This is also were some confusion/possible changes from books are coming in. In the books he is Elayne's and Galad's half brother, the son from their father Taringail's previous marriage and goes by Gawyn Damodred (he is a distant cousin of Morraine). Now in the books Gawyn is treated by Morgase like he is her son, and he thinks of his step mother and half siblings as his full family, so it is possible they are simplifying some relationships, but I think this is a miscommunication as in S2 they mention Elayne having a half brother.
Nuno Lopes as Lord Gaebril, Queen Morgase's advisor and lover. While Andor is a matriarchal monarchy where women have the primary power (hence why Elayne is next in line despite having at least 1 older brother), he wields incredibly and growing power of his own

It's funny how fantasy authors like George RR Martin and Robert Jordan have these inhumanely beautiful male characters in the series, characters whose main trait is that they are so beautiful that every other sentence is someone mentioning how otherworldly their beauty is, and then these characters get cast on the TV adaptation and everyone goes:
Him?????
It happened with Rhaegar Targaryen in GOT and now I am seeing the same discourse with Galad Trakand in WOT lol.
It's just that beauty is so subjective and at the end of the day, in the real world, no one can turn up like in a fictional, fantasy world!
Tumblr media
Also funny that these characters are described by the male authors as slender, graceful, beautiful and the casting then goes for these buff, bodybuilder types lol. Galad looks like he lifts weights instead of practicing the sword!
And yeah it also happens with the female characters like Lanfear being the most beautiful woman in the entire universe and her casting getting pushback until fans actually saw her on the show and then everyone went, 'yeah I get it....' Because charisma and magnetism also adds to a person's attractiveness.
I think these fantasy authors just set expectations so high with their 'most beautiful in the whole universe' standards that adaptations show how silly this whole idea of being impossibly hot is.

I can be disappointed about the Galad casting again while rejoicing that he is the older brother afterall. While I'm here, though I would like to speculate why he calls himself Galad Trakand in the show. It makes sense considering his closeness to Morgase and also as a subtle fuck you to Taringail

truly not enough discussion about the fact that bryne made gawyn swear the oath "my blood shed before hers, my life given before hers" over elayne's cradle when he was a TODDLER like oh my god no wonder this boy's got issues out the wazoo. ever since day 1 everyone around him was like "hey kiddo you're disposable" and ever since day 1 he accepted that as fact.
also, as i type this i'm also remembering that time elayne recalls that one of her earliest memories is being scared that galad would try to murder gawyn during play-sword-fighting out of jealousy of being passed over for first prince of the sword, and this is the initial reason for elayne's lifelong resentment of galad, this fear from when she was probably like 5 years old that he would murder their other brother for a title. and of course galad would never have done such a thing, just as elayne never asked gawyn to make that oath, but man, there is something quietly snuck into the various trakand dynamics about the damaging nature of royal families. it's a goddamn miracle these 3 kids aren't 100x more fucked up than they are!

wot characters on Survivor (not playing with each other)
Rand al'Thor: Starts out naive, latches onto an alliance pre-merge, gets continuously targeted post-merge but maintains his alliance well, wins all types of challenges, becomes Sole Survivor.
Mat Cauthon: Coasts on charm and luck, finds all of the idols, plays one for an ally pre-merge, saves himself with his Shot in the Dark, wins archery and gambling challenges, makes it to final tribal council, loses the popular vote.
Perrin Aybara: Makes solid alliances, performs well in physical and puzzle challenges, gets voted off at the merge because he's perceived as a threat.
Egwene al'Vere: Becomes best friends with everyone on the island, votes them off without remorse, always knows every political undercurrent, wins every distress position challenge, becomes Sole Survivor.
Nynaeve al'Meara: Becomes instant enemies with everyone (even though she's right in her arguments), keeps her tribe safe through two or three challenges, gets voted off the first chance her tribe has.
Elayne Trakand: Gets by on charm and skill, manages multiple overlapping alliances, does well at puzzle and balance challenges, coordinates multiple blindsides, becomes Sole Survivor.
Gawyn Trakand: Starts off strong, is liked by his tribe, helps win challenges, doesn't understand who's voting for who, ends up consistently on the wrong side of the vote, becomes someone's goat post-merge, makes it to final tribal council, gets a couple of votes, loses because he's the goat.
Galad Damodred: Thinks the game is about outdoor survival, and votes always for the weakest member, everyone hates him, gets voted off at his second tribal council.

Galad channeling AU
[Send me a potential AU and I'll answer with five things from that story!]
Ohhhhh boy! This is one I've actually given thought to writing before. I don't know if I'll ever do it, but if I did-
Galad is a sparker, and his first act with the power (that thing he wants more then he wants anything else) is to save Gawyn's life when Gawyn is drowning. He doesn't realize he's channeled at first- or for some time afterwards, repressing and shielding himself in order to protect his conscious mind from the reality of what he is doing. His block is that he is unable to channel except when someone else's life is in danger- that's the only time the innate fear is overcome by his need to do the right thing, to protect an innocent life.
When he finally realizes what is happening, it's after the royal party is waylaid on it's path back to Camelyn from one of the Trakand's estates by brigands. He channels in order to protect Elayne and Gawyn in some way that is impossible to hide, even from himself.
From there his Simple Code of Morality takes over- he intends to turn himself over to Elaida and the Tower for the gentleing, willingly and of his own accord. He makes the mistake of informing Gawyn and Elayne of this plan though, which leads to Gawyn knocking him over the head with a stick.
Elayne's complicated feelings about Galad aside, she and Gawyn do not want to see him gentled. It's one thing to understand it is something that must be done in order to protect the world from another Breaking. It's another for it to be your half brother, staring down the barrel of a slow tortuous death by despair. Elayne hates him sometimes- often really- but because she understands that unyielding stubborn moral code of his is going is so destructive, to him as much as everyone else. And she wont let him make a himself another victim of it.
The plan is to head West, to the mountains, out to the edge of Andor, where the affairs of nobles and Aes Sedai and nations rarely coincide. Stash him there until Elayne can reason out how to avoid him turning himself in, or going mad, or dying. Of course, the last thing anyone expects is to find an Aes Sedai already there, in that far flung corner of Andor, much less to see Trollocs invade onto Andoran soil. But that is of course, when it hits Elayne how to get Galad to live- all she and Gawyn must do, is giving him a duty so important that it will supersede his duty to surrender, a duty like....aiding the Dragon in saving the world for example. (And if Galad goes along with it under the logic that Moiraine Sedai will see him properly disposed of....well that's just the first step of the journey).

Wot Characters and the Taylor Swift song I most associate with them and their favorite Era!(excluding Debut and Tortured Poets Department)
Rand: You’re on Your Own Kid, when asked he consistently says Speak Now
Mat: Cruel Summer, he insists he’s only really listened to Reputation-this is a lie- Midnights is his favorite album
Perrin: Paper Rings, the Lover Album is by and large his favorite- however Fearless is a close second- he just thinks the songs are pretty
Egwene: Wildest Dreams, she’s a Reputation girly first and foremost
Nynaeve: Treacherous, Folklore zero elaboration needed
Elayne: Mastermind, 1989 is her favorite album by far
Min: You Belong With Me, she’s a Red girly and was the one who got Mat to listen to Taylor’s entire discography
Avienda: Red, Avienda isn’t very familiar with all the eras but after Elayne showed her all the albums she picked Evermore
Faile: Stay Stay Stay, just like Egwene she’s a Reputation girly(secretly her favorite is Lover)
Tuon: You’re In Love, Tuon claims to not have any preference but catch her listening to Folklore on repeat
Morraine: The Lucky One, Evermore without a doubt
Siuan: Lavender Haze, she’s a fan of the classics and loves Fearless
Lan: I Know Places, his favorite album is folklore because it’s Nynaeve’s
Thom: Exile, he appreciates the storytelling of Folklore
Brynn: Epiphany, he does not know the names of the albums but he liked most of the songs on Red
Gawyn: Anti-Hero, he insists he doesn’t like Taylor Swift but the answer is 1989
Galad: Karma, without hesitation he says Midnights
Berelain: Slut!, this is a woman who listens to Red, A Lot

So confirmed now that Thom will be back next season. Interested to see how he'll be reintroduced (will he just randomly show up in Falme?) and which storyline he will be in. While the main characters are all, more or less, following the same path as their book counterparts, the secondary characters are getting shuffled around a bit. Loial basically got Min's role in Falme while Min took Thom's place as Mat's travelling companion. You could feasibly fit Thom into any of the book four storylines, he isn't really all that essential to Elayne and Nynaeve's. To be perfectly blunt, Thom isn't really essential to any storyline, he's pretty much just guy who tags along offering advice.

This may be a hot take but elayne is kind of needlessly harsh with Galad. Like in every scene he does his best to be nice to her, respect her, try to help her and get her home. He wont break rules to defend her but like, I think thats fair. No rule breaking of Elaynes has ever gotten her in real trouble. When she’s in a position of real trouble, an aes sedai novice in white cloak territory, he actually is willing to break rules and an honor code to help her.
Elayne has some good points about him joining a cult but like, my girl, you are also in a cult

The level of hotness of the Damodred - Trakand family according to Mat:
Moiraine is very pretty.
He would like to kiss Elayne.
He would like to kiss Morgase, too.
Galad is his bi awakening.
All of them very hot. 100% he would hit that. Meanwhile when it comes to describe Gawyn:
He's just some guy idk.
If I was Gawyn I'd be really offended to be left out of the hotties chart xD

Listening to Wheel Takes coverage of 2x06 and Ali and Gus bring up a great observation about Elayne. About how she's strangely quiet and calm in traumatic situations almost like she has experience with that. Specifically how she places her hand over Nynaeve's mouth to not cry out when Ryma is taken. That it comes across as almost like a child's reaction to wanting to stay quiet when witnessing something horrible. The tldr is that they think Taringail was abusive to Morgase and Elayne and Gawyn witnessed it
