Lover's Oath is NOT Guizhong's Lullaby

(Guili shippers might attack me for this. I have nothing against Guili, it's just that this headcanon had been made "official" by most of the fandom because of misconception and I found no correlation of this song to Guizhong.

It also didn't help that I read this archive piece from a long time ago.

But feel free to keep the headcanon if it makes you happy. Before any of you misunderstand, this does not mean I'm stopping you from shipping whoever you like.)

The reason why this track is called Lover's Oath is because Wangshu Inn is a hotspot for lovers, which is ALSO where we first heard the original rendition of this song.

People just decided that this was Guizhong's Lullaby because of the original track was a vocal version and people just decided to think "Oh, that's Guizhong!" and decided to call it Guizhong's lullaby because "THERE WAS A WOMAN SINGING" before the official title was released.

For those who haven't this heard of this version before (Can't blame you, it was VERY quiet), it was when we meet Xiao for the first time.

Where else can you hear another song with a bit of vocals? The main theme of the game! I don't remember if it's the night or day version.

Interestingly enough, the reason why this played for Xiao when he first showed up is because the other title for this song is "Lone Tower in the West" which was the title we see from one of the music events, I think it was the Zither event. And who do we play it with? Xiao!

The alternate song title refers to Wangshu inn and a call-back to the name of the waypoint, where we know Xiao is also perched over to watch over the people.

The reason why Xiao was there was because he was provided housing via the qixing.

Heck, I wouldn't even be bothered if this was mistaken as Xiao's theme rather than Guizhong's because of these reasons.

If one day HoyoVerse decided to play this on a cutscene with Guizhong in it is probably because the fandom made their headcanon official with many people thinking it and HoyoVerse decided to "officialise" the headcanon to please the fans. 🤨

I decided that this was the right time to make this post because it was finally acknowledged in the wiki. I was like, THANKS! FINALLY!

Ever since your disappearance Guizhong was desperately looking for you. She tried even making inventions to make it easier to find you.

And of course others had started looking for you as well. Zhongli among his duty as an archon found it still to use every second of his free time to search. Xianyun and Ping got other adepti to help as well.

However, a search party could only last so long before giving up hope. Ping was first who tried suggesting Guizhong to move on, she pretended to accept this... But everyone knew better on how she truly felt.

It was a dark time for her indeed. Nobody could calm her for she missed you too dearly.

The realm she created for you was left untouched, she locked it with a puzzle lock not even the wisest could solve and the mightiest could break.

Sometimes she would enter though, just to look at your belongings, sometimes hum you a lullaby; hoping you could hear it somehow...

Seeing her in such distress, Zhongli fully committed after announcing Morax's death. The deal with Tsaritsa was a perfect opportunity to get out of something that took up such portion of his time. Even if by that point he was just putting up appearances.

Nobody knew it was you who looked for them as well. As many Khaenr'iah survivors you were trying to find your way. You wondered how long had passed... If your mother was still well...

The realm of the abyss was dark, or was it a domain? You had no idea. You were weak and surrounded by enemies wherever you went.

You tried to find your way, not really knowing how the time was passing. After a lot of time and effort you finally made it out so now it was time to head to Liyue.

The path felt familiar, but it felt different- you could tell a lot of things had changed... But you only looked for your way home.

With each step a familiar melody slowly started to bless your ears. You ran towards the source of the sound and that's where she was...

When she saw you she couldn't believe it, it took only a moment before happy tears came down like waterfalls and she pulled you closely to embrace you, feeling like if she were to let go you'd disappear again.

While sobbing she continues the lullaby, and as she calmed down she stopped. Suddenly feeling protective she started checking if you weren't hurt. You may be all grown up now but it won't stop her from worrying.

She was all over the place with her emotions but still found it in her to listen to you. She was so glad you were okay... Overjoyed even.

During your reunion Zhongli noticed you two, although you've never really been too close... After you saved Guizhong he noticably gotten softer on you. And that was confirmed once again once he joined the family group hug.

As the others were notified of your return- you got pretty much the same overprotective behavior from Xianyun, who also checked if you were okay and insisted she holds a feast in your name... Which made Guizhong competitive and started thinking of more ways to welcome you back.

A lot has changed during your time away... But the way everyone cared about you didn't.

Now it was time to properly catch up with everyone on everything... 500 years sure left a lot of gaps to fill... And quite frankly more songs your mother could sing to you.

As Y/n was ready to hit her father, a piece of chocolate slipped out of her hand and hit her father in her place, waking him up in the process. Immediately, Y/n placed her small hands on his chest as she began to sing a lullaby that Streetword Rambler would sing to her if she had trouble sleeping.

Y/n: The moon is bright, the wind is quiet, The tree leaves hang over the window. My little baby, go to sleep quickly, Sleep, dreaming sweet dreams. The moon is bright, the wind is quiet, The cradle moves softly. My little one, close your eyes, Sleep, sleep, dreaming sweet dreams. "Is he mad?"

Zhongli: What song was that?

Y/n: A lullaby that Ping sings to n/n when she can't sleep. *smiles* Good morning papa!

Zhongli: It's not morning.

Y/n: Then, good evening, Papa!

Zhongli: Did Azhdaha send you in? *stands up* I'll tell them to bring our dinner here

Moments later, the meal was brought out and as expected of a meal for a member of the royal family, it looked delicious

Zhongli: I can tell you've been doing well from your expression

Y/n: Papa is handsome too!

Zhongli: Let's eat, I ordered them to make something you would like

Y/n: "The meat looks good" Thank you for the food! *struggling with her fork and knife*

It was evident that Y/n could not use a fork and knife properly. This led to her making a mistake and sending her utensils flying off, scaring her in the process

Zhongli: *sighs* You need to learn more etiquette. I'll send someone to your palace tomorrow. Those who were teaching you have no class or a sense of etiquette, so it's time you learn actual etiquette.

Y/n: n/n will do her best!

Y/n: Ping, n/n wants a lullaby

As Zhongli sat he thought about how his daughter reminded him of his late lover and he began to wonder why would he go to such lengths to help protect her and grow into a proper lady if he scorned her

Azhdaha: She's almost exactly like Lady Guizhong.

Zhongli: If I was given more time, I would've completely forgotten that women

Azhdaha: ...Did you enjoy dinner with the princess? Isn't she truly a sweet and lovely princess?

Zhongli: 'Lovely? Sweet?' I wouldn't care, I forgot such emotions related to those two a long time ago

Azhdaha stayed quiet as he then looked at a broken picture frame of the late Guizhong

Zhongli: Leave

Azhdaha: As you wish... *leaves*

A month later, the two had their usual tea time, but this time. The scenery changed as Zhongli decided that their tea time should be moved to the day instead of the usual mid-day to evening time. And as time flew by, Y/n was slowly but finally getting comfortable with being with her father

Y/n: *courtesies* Thank you for inviting me for tea

Zhongli didn't react at all as he just sat down at the table with Y/n

Y/n: *smiling* Good morning, Papa! Papa was in my dream last night!

Zhongli: Oh really?

Y/n: *nods* N/n was with Papa, Madame Ping, and Azhdaha, and we had fun as we picked the stars and moon together!

Zhongli: What a weird dream

Y/n: N/n was so happy that N/n got to play with Papa!

A maid left their food and drinks and then hurriedly left in order to let the two continue with their bonding time

Y/n: "Why does Papa always space out? Is he tired? What is he drinking?" Is that good, Papa?

Zhongli: ... *looked at his teacup*

Azhdaha: It's not enjoyed due to its taste

Y/n: N/n wants what Papa is drinking!

Azhdaha: It might be a bit too strong for your taste, princess...

Y/n: But I want some

Zhongli: Let her have some. If she wants to try it, I won't stop her

After the drink was poured, Y/n looked excited as she inspected and lifted the cup in her hands

Y/n: *amazed by the color and drinks some* N/n likes it too! *happy* It feels like the spring is blooming inside N/n's mouth!

Zhongli/Azhdaha: *shocked*

Y/n: ?

Azhdaha: I see you're enjoying it. It's called White Peony tea, and his majesty enjoys it, and Lady Guizhong used to enjoy it. "It feels like the spring is blooming inside my mouth" is what she once said...

Y/n: *glanced at her father* Mommy said the same thing as N/n?

Azhdaha: Yes, Lady Guizhong was the reason why his majesty began to enjoy this tea. White Peony's tea's main ingredient is found in the Guili Planes. And the two always had tea in this exact same-

Azhdaha: ... *bows and leaves*

Zhongli: You're too young for tea. You should stick to drinking milk for now.

Y/n could be seen laying on the carpet drawing while Streetword Rambler and Azhdaha watched over her

Azhdaha: What are you drawing, princess?

Y/n: It's Madame Ping!

Azhdaha: I see, then that's his majesty, correct?

Y/n: Nope *hands him a drawing of him* This is for you!

Azhdaha: Is this me? Thank you so much! I'll cherish this!

Y/n: This is for you, Madame Ping! *hands the drawing to her*

Madame Ping: Thank you, princess

Y/n: "I'll draw Papa next"

Azhdaha: It's his majesty and the princess! He will be pleased if he sees this!

Y/n: "Is there anyone else to draw?" Madame Ping

Y/n: What does mommy look like?

Azhdaha/Madame Ping: ...

Y/n: Is mommy's hair straight or wavy? Is it long or short?

Madame Ping: She had the same hair color as yours, and her hair was short

Y/n: "Alright, I think I can draw her now"

Madame Ping: She was a beautiful and kind person, and she looked almost exactly like the princess

Y/n: Like N/n? *smiles* I want to see her too.

As Y/n continued drawing, the atmosphere was heavy as Azhdaha and Madame Ping stayed quiet and were deep in thought after what Y/n said

You want a sad headcanon? You probably don't, but I get sad every time I think about this, and I don't want to be the only one, so I'm inflicting it upon you.

You know how Guizhong's Lullaby (Lovers' Oath) plays the first time you meet Xiao? I like to think, no, I don't like to think it because it makes me sad, my brain just does, that Guizhong used to play it as a Lullaby to Xiao when he was a kid and that's why it plays

this headcanon also plays into the Zhongli and Guizhong parents to Ganyu and Xiao thing that I have (Hu Tao didn't get to meet her)

So whenever I think about it, I get sad..

lol i couldn’t pick one. there’s something so sweet about the idea that venti preforms guizhong’s lullaby for zhongli from time to time; prolly to calm zhongli down, or maybe to just help him cope with erosion. at the same time, there’s something so heartbreakingly satisfying about the idea that zhongli not wanting to hear guizhong’s lullaby from anyone that’s not guizhong; prolly to preserve his last memory of the song—sung by guizhong—purely guizhong’s voice.

with zhongli and guizhong, I always seem to wonder if he worries that one day he won’t remember her voice :(
