The Pontecorvo Carnival history
The first parade of allegorical floats in Pontecorvo took place in 1952. The story goes that it all started with a big papier-mâché elephant, Alicandro. He was bought in Naples by some people from Pontecorvo who were visiting the Neapolitan city. Alicandro went on to star in Pontecorvo's first Float Parade, which was held in the town.
The fun was so great that the initiative was repeated the following year and the year after that. Gradually, the parade was enriched with masks, parties, and events. It became part of the local popular tradition and the most eagerly awaited event of the year. Mazzamevere and the Princess are among the historical masks of the Pontecorvo Carnival.
