#kingdom hearts dream drop distance #khddd #the world that never was #scenery #my gif #i really love how sora's side of this world is dark and eerie and fully leans into how dreams can distort and twist reality #the city looks mostly normal at first aside from the ghostly fog that seeps down from buildings and drifts along the floor and rises up #but as you keep going the ground beneath you is no longer a street but rather the faces of more buildings that stretch over an abyss #it's no longer the sprawling city you first arrived in but instead an uncanny one way path towards your destination #the buildings now twist and contort and are crooked and grow out of the ground in all kinds of ways that make no logical sense #it's the first time that a sleeping world looks easily distinguishable from the real world. it looks wrong. like a nightmare #meanwhile riku's half contrasts heavily by appearing to be fairly normal #the interior of the real castle never made any practical sense so nothing here feels too out of place compared to how it usually looks #it shows how much more in control riku is in comparison to how sora is losing his grip on reality as he descends further into their trap #cool stuff! love me some environmental storytelling #also i finished giffing every world in this game yippee i'm done (is covered head to toe in blood)

first off, i just find it extremely funny that when you just place a number/emoji tumblr suddenly decides to make it Huge.

secondly, i. sighs deeply. well even though you didn't provide a character, i suppose we all know The Character of choice has got to be kai i fear... x'] so i will use him for this!

What's your favorite thing about Kai Satou?

steeples my hands. where do i begin...

what stood out most to me when i first saw him was his humor, naturally - i enjoy that sort of deadpan delivery, especially when it comes to the more morbid sort of things. his demeanor was notable as well, where earlier than this i also immediately loved his and reko's designs. but of course, those are more... superficial reasons for enjoying him. there's much to be gleamed from each little piece he shares and i truly enjoy digging into each one to dissect...

ultimately, i believe my favorite thing about kai is simply. his temperament.

by the nature of how he was raised, he's quite an intense individual who has only recently learned the 'art' of mellowing himself out. it takes much self-discipline and much more time to learn, considering the lengths asunaro initially took to either suppress or outright sever the growth of any such bonds.

and yet he persists! not only for himself, by which he'd name the reasoning alone selfish, but for those who deign to stay by him. and when they do so (at least, outside of the death game, but i'll get to that), it's so. fascinating to me how kai tries to warn them -- warn them of who he 'is' sort of as... a test. even years into this, he still seemingly regards his present self as a mask, with his darkness as an inevitability. and if that mask is pulled away from him - as was the case in the death game - he does not want to be cause for fear. this test is not only to see if they'll accept his behavior as 'amicable' but to see if he would be unduly imposing upon them when, not if, this 'darkness' seeps out of the cracks. he's more afraid of harming others than of being alone, and yet he's welcomed. and every single time he is, it reassures him that the person he acts as today is nonetheless a part of him. it grounds him and makes that connection to his humanity more stable too.

...but of course. although this is preferable, i find it even more fascinating seeing how he reacts to situations that are far more reminiscent of that which asunaro subjected (or is subjecting) him to. he slips back into old habits. still holds a critical, detached view of lives. there are some things that only he can do when the situation comes to this.

and yet, most surprisingly, these are also the times at which his emotions are most prevalent and raw. when pushed to that survival instinct, you really do see that click in how much more he will show -- no longer only what he permits himself to show. when pushed to survive, that is when you witness his boiling rage as he hit emiri, that is when he reveals the depths of his devotion to the chidouins, that is when he reveals an unprecedented fear. the tact he shows in these moments is learned, as to not exacerbate an already-tenuous situation, but the point at which his asunaro self is pushed to the forefront is the very same where you undoubtedly meet his most emotional moments.

he can seem very ruthless, or even heartless, in the implication he would've allowed or killed everyone else if it guaranteed sara would live in the death game. even if it didn't come to that, his sentiment was very clear. but it was not out of malice toward other innocent people, nor can it be justified by that practical mind he used to excuse killing touko in ytts... it is simply. that his love for the chidouins comes first. there is no ill-will in his wish that the chidouins survive; it is only an unfortunate consequence thereof. kai would make the decision in an instant, again and again, no matter how much time he was given to reconsider.

it's. so interesting to me... seeing how strongly this rules him. of course he would prefer to embody that unremarkable, mild-mannered individual over anything else, but this is what lurks within him, and. well. all that said, i almost want to applaud mr. chidouin's ability to draw out the depths of who kai truly is. having orchestrated each and every circumstance that made it possible for us to dissect kai at all, he really is cruel.

i love the dynamics that come of this though, the different ways the cast approaches him, and how it affects which pieces kai offers. the levels of trust in nearly all of those interactions is tangible... and more often than not, kai wants to trust. how unfortunate!

#grips the desk. i am normal about all of the aspects that fuel a heavily dissociated individual's dynamics w other people #just. sighs deeply. there's so much there. and it's so fucked up that mr. chidouin purposely kept kai in that state #to make him easier to manipulate. he continued to subtly and not-so-subtly encourage that belief kai's humanity is not intrinsic to him #that he is a weapon first and foremost. and one would rather have this blade break defending poor sara; hm?#...the end of the kai minisode is sickening. and so fucking satisfying for proving that. to me. to me.#ask #friends #strawberryjamsara #yttdposting #yttd meta #yttd hcs #<- it's mostly meta. but. i know that my elaboration toes the line...
