Dan Milmo at The Guardian:
TikTok is back in the US – but Apple and Google are not sure if it should be.
The short video app has yet to appear on the tech companies’ app stores, reflecting an unease about the White House executive order that has given TikTok the confidence to resume operations after temporarily shuttering the service on 18 January. Apple and Google do not appear to agree. The legislation forbade companies from distributing, maintaining or updating TikTok – for instance, selling it on an app store – after a deadline of 19 January. But the executive order, signed within hours of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, suspended for 75 days enforcement of an act that demanded the Beijing-based owner of TikTok, ByteDance, sell the app’s US operation or face a de facto ban. The order seeks to reassure companies that work with TikTok that they will not be prosecuted for keeping the social media app on US users’ smartphone screens. It also instructs the attorney general – who leads the Department of Justice (DoJ) – to issue a letter reassuring those entities that the law has not been violated and there is no liability for their conduct. Nonetheless, Apple and Google have taken TikTok off their stores, meaning US smartphone users cannot download it. In the rest of the world, the app is free to access as before. In China, ByteDance runs a sister app, Douyin. Oracle, the cloud computing provider that delivers the app’s content, has not pulled the plug in the US. Larry Ellison, Oracle’s founder and the world’s fourth richest person, with a $209bn (£167bn) fortune, has been suggested by Trump as a potential buyer of TikTok. Indeed, Ellison was present at a press conference last week where Trump suggested he buy it, saying it sounded like a “good deal”. On Saturday NPR reported that Trump was working on a deal to buy TikTok’s global operations that involved Oracle, although the president then pushed back on that scenario, saying he was not in talks with the company.
While TikTok is back operating in the USA, the app is not back in app stores such as Google Play Store and Apple App Store, which means that TikTok cannot be downloaded or updated from an app store at this time.

I am not happy that very few of the apps on my phone make proper use of the changelog feature. When a developer chooses to write a changelog that says: "Bug fixes and performance improvements" instead of actually explaining their work, it comes across to me as lazy and condescending do their userbase. Because I know that internally, the developers are keeping detailed records through Git messages. It begs the question: "Are we not smart or worthy enough to know what is going on inside the programs we permit onto our devices?"
But I think something less sinister, and more depressing, is driving this trend. It's not that the devs are sneering at you, or (necessarily) that they're hiding predatory updates from you, or even that the developers are exceptionally lazy.
I think that software companies only care about new features, and simply do not value bug fixing and maintenance. As an organization, most of these dev teams will prioritize new features and will assume that their users do as well. The most profitable companies want to constantly optimize for efficiency. It might be considered a waste of employee hours to have even one PM look through the Git logs, find all of the little bugs, and create a copy-pasted detailed changelog bespoke for each update release on the Google Play Store.

Reelshort Is A Stupid Idea For A Streaming Service that Exists.
Sometimes I like to post about just really stupid shit I come across and this is definitely one of them. This is about an streaming service app that I learned about the existence of from three separate YouTube videos.
The streaming service app is one called ReelShort. This one has "shows" and "movies" on it that seem to be in the shitty romance genre. You got titles like "The Double Life Of My Billonaire Husband", "Fatal Temptation: Between Two Alphas", "Goodbye My CEO", "Fated To My Forbidden Alpha", "My Gorgeous Wife Is An Ex-Convict" and also "My Husband Killed Me, Then I Won The Mega Ball".
Now, aside from this streaming services' so called shows and movies having the dumbest titles ever, the way that this service works is even dumber. All of these so called shows and movies will be broken down into a number of episodes. For example from one of the videos I watched on this, the so called movie "My Husband Killed Me, Then I Won the Mega Ball" is composed of 52 episodes and each of these episodes are between 60 and 90 seconds in length.
Now, the problem that has come up with this streaming service basically comes down to two things. See, when you decide to start one of their so called movies, you can watch the first episode for free. But, if you decide to keep watching, you then have to watched ads before each episode to unlock said next episode and you have to watch anywhere between 15 to 20 ads to unlock a single episode. What makes things even better is that, from the Google Play Store reviews for the app, you can only unlock up to 20 episodes per day just by watching ads. So, given all that, it would take someone three days just to finish watching "My Husband Killed Me. Then I Won The Mega Ball" and nobody wants to spend three days on something they should be able to just watch once and be done with it.
Also, from reading the reviews for this app on the Google Play Store, I've learned that you can just buy coins and use those to unlock an given next episode and I also learned that the "free" method of just watching ads to unlock episodes doesn't actually work when you hit the home stretch of episodes because that is when the app will force you to play for those last episodes which is really stupid. Some of the reviews even said as much as $5 an episode which is insane to pay for something that is 60-90 seconds long.
I really don't see the point of a streaming service app like this. The cherry on top to all this stupidity is that the creators of this app send the same copy and pasted response to people who leave one and two star reviews on the app. They'll say that you only have to watch 15 to 20 ads to unlock an episode and that the ads are only 5 to 30 seconds long and like, that's still really insane that they think that watching 15 to 20 ads for 19 episodes isn't all that much. Then they'll go through a numbered list of ways to get a "free bonus" by doing a daily check in, watching ads every day and watching ads to unlock episode without paying and like numbers two and three sound pretty much the same. The end their message with the most bait sounding sentence where they say that if you rate the app better it'll give the team more motivation and that really just sounds backwards to me. I feel like if an app I created I really low rating I would take that as motivation to make the app better. I really don't understand how this app has a four star rating on the Google Play Store with an actual decent number of five star reviews. I have to believe that the creators bought a bunch of bot accounts of five star reviews.

Alex Kaplan at MMFA:
Google and Apple’s app stores have been hosting an app for Scored, a message board site dedicated to hosting far-right forum TheDonald — which was previously banned on Reddit and rebranded as “patriots.win” after January 6 — and other far-right forums pushing extremism and conspiracy theories. The site, which researchers have called “an alternative Reddit platform that shelter[s] banned fringe communities,” is supposedly owned by the lead moderator of TheDonald who apparently “made the site” for the forum.
TheDonald originally began on Reddit as “r/The_Donald,” with the subreddit dedicated to supporting Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent presidency. It was known for spreading and promoting far-right misinformation, conspiracy theories, far-right campaigns, bigotry, white nationalism and white nationalist events, and calls for violence that violated Reddit’s rules. Reddit officially banned r/The_Donald in 2020 but many of the subreddit’s users had already moved to another site, known at the time as “TheDonald.win,” which became the home of what was called the “.win” communities. After the January 6 insurrection, which TheDonald was used to help coordinate, “TheDonald.win” rebranded as “patriots.win.”
In early 2022, an administrator on the “.win” communities’ central hub site announced that “going forward, we will be known as Scored” instead of .win. “Doggos,” who is TheDonald’s apparent lead moderator and seemingly “made the site” for the forum, claimed on the message board that “I own Scored,” and advertised donations to Scored as “supporting this community’s existence.” The announcement on the communities’ central hub site also noted that “in the short term, our focus is on … working on our Android and iOS apps.” Media Matters has now found that since at least 2022, both the Google and Apple app stores have carried “Scored Communities.” The app leads users to numerous far-right forums, including TheDonald, which has continued to push extremism, rampant antisemitism, and racism after being banned from Reddit, as well as calls to violence. (Doggos has said that TheDonald on the app has “a little bit more content-level censorship due to app store policy.”)
Google App Store and Apple App Store are hosting an App called Scored to host far-right forums that were banned from Reddit, such as Patriots[.]win (formerly r/The_Donald).
