Girls' Generation - Genie

Average of 7.3 but who cares, I’m not listening to either of these EP’s to rate them.

Okay, really really interesting. So the order goes: Into The New World -> Girls’ Generation -> Gee -> Genie -> Oh!, all of which I’ve listened to now. By Oh!, they’re very solidly the SNSD that we know and love, but at the point of Girls’ Generation, they still sound very 1st gen. So yeah, 2009 was a Massive year for kpop, because in these two EP’s they’ve gone from shitty 1st gen boringness to Literally SNSD haha

I still have to listen to IGAB, Lion Heart, and Forever 1 from SNSD, so we still have a few pieces of the story missing. But we’re getting there.

Genie

Yesterday I watched Kiss Of Life and some randoms do a kpop song guessing game thing, and this song was one of the ones they had to guess. They had to listen to just that intro part, with the car and the talking. The adults guessed correctly and the kids had no idea

I always associate this song with Gee for obvious reasons, but it actually isn’t all that similar? It’s still synth pop, but it’s quite a bit darker, more sultry

Like they’re singing with their Adult Lady voices instead of their Cute Girl voices

8/10, I think I’m learning to like this song more but we’ll stick with the rating I gave it in Oh!

Etude

This is an awfully pompous name to give a song

Oh good, I was scared it would be a slow jam for a sec

Wait did they just say “sexy”?

They sure did, it’s been six months since Gee and they’re all grown up already haha

Ooh that instrumental post chorus was fun

Yeah, I could see the latter 1st gens doing this song too

Girlfriend

This sounds so anime-outro to me

OMG it has a sequel called Boyfriend omg i’m so excited

It’s like, straight synth pop, but there’s a really neat guitar going off in my right ear

The chimes are cute but I feel like I would prefer if they were something else

Honestly I’m so grateful to this guitar keeping me company

But the lyrics, oh my god

The synths are having a seizure in the background

The siren is actually being used as part of the chorus too

I need to see the lyrics for this, the bridge sounds so sus

Oh wow, the lyrics sure Are sus, but more because she seems like a toxic ex

Yeah I guess we’re due a ballad

This isn’t a pure ballad though

The “bum bum bum” in the second verse is giving me like, christmas music vibes

Tbf christmas music does tend to be that sort of ballad feel

The chorus is Super chanty, even by SM standards

Haha the strings and the horns, this is SUCH a christmas song, there’s no way this was released in June

And the pipes too, I hear you!

Yeah, we’ve got a full orchestral arrangement here, plus the drum kit and the bass

Y’know? I feel like actually earned this one
