Understanding Acidity: Types, Causes, and Symptoms
Do you feel a burning sensation in your throat and stomach after eating certain foods? Do you often feel nauseous, bloated, and overly full? It might be suffering from acidity. This is a common condition most people experience at least once due to excess acid production in the stomach. This not only causes discomfort in the stomach but also leads to other symptoms like a sour taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and indigestion. If you are experiencing these symptoms frequently, it may be time to consult a Gastro Surgeon in Ahmedabad. Various factors, such as poor eating habits, excess stress, and certain medications, can cause acidity.
Lifestyle choices like smoking and consuming oily, fatty, and spicy foods can also increase the risk. If you experience acidity occasionally, it may not indicate any health issues. However, if you experience it frequently, at least two or more days a week, may indicate an underlying health issue. In such cases, it is best to consult the best Gastro Surgeon in Ahmedabad.
Types Of Acidity:
According to a gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad, acidity mainly refers to conditions involving gastric acid levels and their impact on health. Here are the main types of acidity. Let’s take a look in-depth:
Gastric Hyperacidity:
This type of acidity involves excessive production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which can cause symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux, and discomfort.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, irritating. It commonly leads to symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and chest pain.
Peptic Ulcers:
Peptic ulcers are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus due to the corrosive effects of gastric acid. They can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and, in some cases, bleeding.
Non-ulcer Dyspepsia:
Non-ulcer dyspepsia, also known as functional dyspepsia, involves recurring pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen without evidence of peptic ulcers or other clear causes. It may be linked to abnormal gastric motility or heightened sensitivity to stomach acid.
Reflux Esophagitis:
This is inflammation of the esophagus caused by repeated exposure to stomach acid due to GERD. It can result in erosions or ulcers in the lining of the esophagus.
Acid Peptic Disorders:
This term encompasses a range of conditions involving acid-related damage to the gastrointestinal tract, including peptic ulcers and GERD.
Understanding these different types of acidity helps a gastro doctor in Ahmedabad to diagnose and treat conditions effectively. Treatment often involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medications, and, in some cases, surgical interventions tailored to the severity and specific diagnosis of the condition.
Symptoms Of Acidity – Best Gastro Surgeon in Ahmedabad:
Recognizing the symptoms of acidity is crucial for timely treatment. Here are common symptoms as guided by gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad:
Heartburn:
Despite its name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It’s a common sign of acidity, occurring when excess stomach acid bleeds into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest. This discomfort can last from a few minutes to several hours.
Regurgitation:
Some people with acidity may experience regurgitation. This is a sensation where undigested food, bile, or stomach acid moves up and down in the throat. It feels similar to vomit and usually happens after meals, during exercise, or when bending over right after eating.
Sour Taste In The Mouth:
Another common symptom of stomach issues is a sour taste in the mouth, often linked to acidity. This occurs when food, stomach acid, and bile rise to the back of your throat, causing a bitter taste. It usually happens along with regurgitation.
Difficulty In Swallowing:
Difficulty in swallowing, known as dysphagia, can occur when excess stomach acid creates a feeling of fullness. This condition also slows down food movement through the esophagus, delaying digestion.
Sore Throat:
When stomach acid moves up to the mouth, it can irritate the vocal cords or voice box, leading to a sore throat or hoarseness.
Indigestion:
Indigestion, or dyspepsia, can be a key sign of acidity and other digestive problems. It often causes discomfort and a burning sensation in the upper middle part of the stomach.
Common Causes Of Acidity Guided By Gastro Surgeon In Ahmedabad:
Several factors can contribute to acidity. According to gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad, these include:
Food and Dietary Factors
Spicy Foods: Eating foods with excessive chilies, pepper, vinegar, and paprika.
Fried and Oily Foods: Consuming deep-fried and greasy meals.
Caffeine: Excessive intake of caffeine found in tea, coffee, and chocolate.
Salt: High intake of table salt.
Low Fibre Diet: Eating a diet low in fibre.
Overeating: Overeating or eating at irregular intervals.
Unhealthy Habits: Lying down immediately after eating.
Exercise Timing: Eating just before strenuous physical exercise.
Lifestyle Factors
Smoking: Frequent smoking.
Alcohol and Soda: Excessive intake of alcohol, soda, or carbonated drinks.
Sleep: Lack of sleep.
Physical Activity: Lack of physical activity.
Ailments and Medications
Mental Health: Excessive stress, anxiety, or depression.
Stomach Diseases: Conditions such as peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and stomach cancer.
Medications: Use of painkillers, antibiotics, chemotherapy medications, and antidepressants.
When to Consult With the Best Gastrologist in Ahmedabad:
The symptoms of acidity are often manageable with over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes. However, if you experience severe chest pain, unusual or worsening heartburn, or chest discomfort, it’s important to consult a gastro doctor in Ahmedabad. Additionally, if you experience these symptoms more than twice a week or regularly, visit a gastroenterologist in Ahmedabad to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.
Wrapping Up:
Acidity is common with symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, sour taste, dysphagia, sore throat, and indigestion. Various factors contribute to acidity, including dietary choices, lifestyle habits, stress, and certain medications. While over-the-counter treatments and lifestyle adjustments can manage symptoms, it’s crucial to consult the best Gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad if symptoms are severe, unusual, or frequent. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent complications and improve quality of life.

Prevalence of Acidity – Related Disorders in India and its Remedies
Acidity-related digestive health issues are prevalent among a significant percentage of the Indian population, affecting people of all age groups. Among these ailments, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) stands out as one of the most common problems faced by Indians. Surveys conducted across different regions have shed light on the widespread impact of acidity-related disorders, with Uttar Pradesh being one of the frontrunners in the prevalence of such issues. Understanding the causes, effects, and safe solutions for acidity is crucial to promote overall well-being.
Expert Insights on Acidity and its Prevalence
A media awareness workshop in Lucknow, organized by the HEAL Foundation on “Acidity — Karodon Logon Ki Problem Ke Safe Solutions,” brought together renowned medical experts to shed light on this prevalent issue. Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Director of Nephrology & Kidney Transplant Medicine at Kidney & Urology Institute, Medanta Hospital, emphasized that GERD affects 10–30% of the Indian population, with Uttar Pradesh experiencing a higher incidence. Poor eating habits, sleep disturbances, and stress are among the common contributing factors to this condition. Worryingly, a significant number of patients resort to self-medication or over-the-counter remedies, highlighting the importance of seeking professional advice to prevent potential complications.
Dr. C G Agrawal, Former Professor & Head of Medicine at KG’s Medical University, Lucknow, explained the significance of optimal stomach acid for proper food digestion. While some amount of acid is necessary for digestion, hyperacidity can be harmful to both digestion and overall health. He pointed out that excessive consumption of fried/spicy foods, tea/coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol often causes acidity.
Ranitidine: A Trusted Solution for Acidity
To manage acidity safely and effectively, a balanced approach is necessary, including a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. When it comes to choosing medicines, it’s crucial to be cautious. Dr. Agrawal highlighted the importance of prescribing medicines that suppress excess acid production in the stomach rather than blocking vital acid altogether. One such trusted medication commonly prescribed for acidity-related disorders is Ranitidine. With a legacy of four decades, Ranitidine offers quick relief from acidity symptoms and is readily available over the counter.
Prof Dr. Narsingh Verma, HoD of Physiology & Family Medicine at King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, emphasized that detrimental lifestyles, characterized by disrupted sleep, irregular eating habits, and erratic work schedules, contribute to the rise in acidity-related disorders. Implementing preventive measures, such as regular exercise, avoiding junk and spicy foods, and staying hydrated, can help manage acidity effectively. However, it is crucial to consult a doctor before taking any medications for treatment.
Acidity-related disorders are a prevalent health concern in India, impacting a large portion of the population. Ranitidine has emerged as a trusted and effective medication for providing relief from acidity symptoms. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential, seeking professional advice and appropriate medication can help individuals manage acidity effectively and lead a healthier life.
For individuals seeking effective relief from acid reflux symptoms, Ranitidine has proven to be a reliable and accessible medication. Its ability to reduce stomach acid production makes it a valuable choice for managing acid reflux discomfort. However, for long-term or chronic acid reflux, it is essential to seek guidance from a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate management and to rule out any underlying health issues.

Why Choose Ayurvedic Treatment For Acid Reflux
Acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a medical condition that causes acid movement from the stomach to the chest or throat area. Anyone who suffers from such a condition gets a bitter-sour taste at the back of their mouth, and they find it utterly uncomfortable as it irritates the oesophagus lining. Ayurvedic treatment for acid reflux is a great way to subside such symptoms and bring relief to the patient.
Acid reflux causes a burning sensation in the chest and frequently happens after consuming a large meal, coffee, or alcohol. Other signs of acid reflux include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, coughing, wheezing, nausea, burping, bloating, a dry cough, a persistent sore throat, and hiccups. There is no specific age group that gets affected by acid reflux. However, it may happen to people of all ages. Some people only experience minor acid reflux or GERD symptoms, while others experience them frequently.
So, hyperacidity treatment in Ayurveda is one of the best ways to get relief from such a health condition.
How Acid Reflux Happens
The lower oesophagal sphincter is like a muscular ring-like structure, and it acts as a valve at the opening to your stomach (LES). As an individual eats food, the LES closes soon after. The acid produced by your stomach may rise into your oesophagus if the LES doesn’t completely seal or opens too frequently. This may result in symptoms like heartburn and a burning chest ache. You might have gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as acid reflux disease, if your symptoms occur more frequently than twice a week (GERD).
Let us discuss some of the trigger factors of acid reflux:
Pitta Aggravating Food
Obesity
Pregnancy
Hiatal hernia
Chain-smoking
Excessive use of alcohol
Overeating
Sleeping or lying down right after eating
Consuming deep-fried and spicy foods frequently
Using non-steroidal, antidepressants, or anti-inflammatory drugs
Untimely eating habits
How Ayurveda Treats Acid Reflux?
According to Ayurveda, acid reflux is brought on by the aggravation of the Pitta Dosha. Pitta, which in Ayurveda means “fire” or “hot,” is humour. Its stomach location and characteristics—hot, sharp, powerful, acidic, and pungent—describe it as such. Stomach contents become more acidic due to a pitta imbalance. As a result, most healthy persons experience stomach acid reflux into their oesophagus. These individuals experience acid reflux because their Pitta is more sensitive, leading to more frequent acidic liquid reflux.
Why Choose Hyperacidity Treatment In Ayurveda
If you are suffering from an acid reflux condition, then you must book an appointment with Dr Era Ayurveda for hyperacidity treatment in Ayurveda. Dr Era starts a treatment plan for a patient after identifying the root cause of acid reflux. First, she diagnoses the root cause of the problem in each patient and then creates a specific treatment plan unique to their body type, lifestyle, and other health conditions. After that, Dr Era starts treating a patient to see faster results, starting a great deal where patients need to make lifestyle changes.
Dr Era determines the dosha vitiation and makes treatment recommendations. A patient with GERD must adhere to the doctor’s recommendations for Ayurvedic medications, food, and lifestyle changes. Ayurvedic medicines reduce Pitta and encourage Vaat to flow normally. For a full recovery, GERD patients need Ayurvedic treatment for at least three months.
How Ayurvedic Treatment For Acid Reflux Benefits You
Ayurveda is an age-old medicine that helps patients eliminate the symptoms a great deal and lead healthy lives. Instead of focusing only on the symptoms, the ayurvedic approach to disease seeks the underlying reason. There are two therapy options offered by Ayurveda: Shodhan and Shaman. Shodhan is about detoxifying the body with the panchakarma process. And Shaman is about balancing the doshas through dietary changes, Ayurvedic medicine, and lifestyle adjustments. A patient responds better to Ayurvedic treatment methods if they have undergone the Panchakarma detoxification process.
There is no use of any synthetic or chemical products while making Ayurvedic medicines, only natural processing is used. Because of this, even if the patient needs to take the herbs for prolonged periods, there is no risk of side effects. Furthermore, the healing and avoidance of further health issues are guaranteed by the total removal of the root cause.
Ayurveda is more than just a branch of medicine.
Dr Era’s treatment methods consist of recognising each person’s unique problems and finding out the root cause before commencing with the treatment procedure. The patient’s treatment is prioritised in Ayurveda over the treatment of the illness. Due to their physiologies, two people with the same condition may respond differently to a treatment.
Summary
Get in touch with us today and book an appointment with Dr Era Ayurveda for the Ayurvedic treatment for acid reflux. Contact today and ensure to lead a healthier life in the future.

Recognize the 13 symptoms of high stomach acid
High stomach acid symptoms can be a sign of certain digestive diseases that you are experiencing. Therefore, you need to know the symptoms of increased stomach acid.
Stomach acid is a colourless, watery, and acidic liquid produced by the stomach organs. This fluid serves to help digest protein, prevent infection and food poisoning, and ensure the absorption of vitamin B12 into the body. However, increased stomach acid levels can cause the stomach's pH (acidity level) to be too high. As a result, the body experiences disturbances in the digestive system, including the oesophagus and mouth.
Signs of hyperacidity
Here are some high stomach acid symptoms to watch out for to prevent complications. 1. Difficult to swallow One of the high stomach acid symptoms you need to pay attention to is difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). You see, stomach acid regularly rising into the oesophagus can cause irritation and sores. Scars in the oesophagus can make this digestive tract narrow, so you have difficulty swallowing. 2. Heartburn In addition to difficulty swallowing, another high stomach acid symptom is heartburn. It usually begins with a burning sensation in the upper abdomen. Then, a burning sensation from the stomach will rise to the chest. Chest pain is usually most pronounced when you lie down, bend over, or after eating. If left unchecked, you may be at risk for GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). 3. Inflammation of the oesophagus
Not only a symptom of a bacterial or viral infection, but inflammation of the oesophagus can also be a high stomach acid symptom. If you have GERD, acid from the stomach can rise and press the back into the oesophagus. If left unchecked, the acidic liquid can damage the oesophagus, leading to esophagitis. 4. Hot in the throat Rising stomach acid can cause damage to the lining of the oesophagus. This damage can cause pain and a burning sensation under the throat and chest, the location of the oesophagus. Over time, stomach acid backs up into the lining of the oesophagus, causing inflammation. This condition puts the oesophagus at risk of injuries, such as ulcers or scar tissue (keloids). 5. Bad breath The leading cause of acid reflux in most people is the lower oesophagal sphincter (LES), a condition in which the oesophagus muscles are damaged or loosened. When the oesophagal muscles are working correctly, they open during swallowing to let into the stomach, then close tightly. However, the damaged oesophagal muscle will remain open and allow acid to flow back into the throat, causing bad breath. 6. Burp Burping is the body's way of expelling excess air from the upper digestive tract. According to the Mayo Clinic, normal burping occurs when you swallow excess air. However, spewing that occurs continuously, more than one to two times in a short period, can be high stomach acid symptoms. This condition is related to rising stomach acid, which narrows the oesophagus, making it difficult to swallow. Excess air cannot be expelled smoothly from the body when you have difficulty swallowing. 7. Mouth tastes sour Bad breath accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth is usually one of the characteristics of acid reflux. If the muscle opening between the oesophagus and stomach does not close entirely after eating, food and stomach acid can back up into the oesophagus. It can cause a sour taste in the mouth. Fortunately, you can overcome this by changing your diet to a healthier one.
Other signs of acid reflux
In addition to the digestive problems mentioned, several other conditions can be high stomach acid symptoms, such as: - bloated, - asthma, - nauseous, - heartburn, - hoarseness It is also worth noting that patients with cystic fibrosis are more at risk of developing acid reflux than people in general. Usually, you can relieve high stomach acid symptoms with home remedies. However, if the above conditions are alarming, please consult a doctor to understand the right solution. Read the full article

⚠️One common cause of acid reflux disease is a stomach abnormality called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the stomach and LES move above the diaphragm, a muscle that separates your stomach from your chest. Normally, the diaphragm helps keep acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and cause symptoms of acid reflux disease.
