When acid reflux back from stomach to esophagus due to lax valve between esophagus and stomach and produce damage to the inner lining of esophagus called GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease).
What are the Symptoms of GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)?
Heartburn: this is the most common symptom of GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). This is a burning feeling which rises from the upper abdomen or lower chest up towards the neck.
Pain abdomen or chest pain, dyspepsia
Some uncommon symptoms of GERD: these may occur and can make the diagnosis difficult.
Recurrent cough
Asthma
Wheeze
Sore throat
Hoarseness of voice
Tooth and gum problem
Severe chest pain
Investigations Required are GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)?
Tests are not usually necessary if you have typical symptoms. You need to have upper GI endoscopy to confirm and establish the extent of damage. There are GERD where endoscopy may be negative. There are other investigations; like 24 hour pH analysis which is highly sensitive test to confirm GERD. Other tests like manometry, chest x ray, ECG might be needed.
What can we do to reduce the GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) symptoms?
The following lifestyle changes may help to reduce the reflux:
Stop smoking
Some foods and drinks – Foods and drinks those might be responsible for reflux are peppermints, chocolate, spicy foods, hot drinks, coffee, and alcoholic drinks. Also, avoiding large-volume meals may help. Certain medications like pain killers may worsen the symptoms
Weight loss – If you are overweight, losing some weight may help to improve the symptoms.
Posture – Lying down or bending forward may increase reflux. Wearing tight belts may increase intraabdominal pressure and increases the reflux.
Bedtime
Avoid sleeping within 2 – 3 hours of meal.
Raise head end of the bed by 1- 20 cm.
What are the treatment options for GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)?
Medications – antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, prokinetic agents
Surgical treatment – laparoscopic fundoplication
Choice of treatment depends on severity and duration of symptoms, presence or absence of complications.
Are there any complications from GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)?
Scarring and stricture of esophagus, lung, gum and tooth problem, Barrett\’s esophagus and sometimes cancer of the esophagus.

Finding the Best Gastroenterologist in Jaipur Expert Care for Liver and Digestive Health
When it comes to maintaining good health, the importance of a well-functioning digestive system cannot be overstated. The liver and gastrointestinal (GI) tract play a vital role in the body, influencing everything from digestion to immunity. If you’re in Jaipur and need expert care, finding the best gastroenterologist or liver specialist is critical. This blog will help you understand why consulting a gastro and liver specialist is essential, the conditions they treat, and how to find the right doctor in Jaipur.
Understanding Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the digestive system, including the stomach, intestines, esophagus, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. Hepatology, a sub-specialty, specifically addresses liver-related disorders. Both fields require advanced training and expertise to diagnose and treat conditions effectively.
A gastro doctor in Jaipur is your go-to professional for common digestive complaints like acid reflux, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as more complex conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcers. On the other hand, a liver specialist in Jaipur focuses on diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver, and cirrhosis.
Common Conditions Treated by Gastro and Liver Specialists
Acid Reflux and GERD Acid reflux, often accompanied by heartburn, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. Left untreated, it can lead to chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), causing complications like esophageal ulcers.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) IBS is a functional disorder that affects the large intestine, leading to symptoms like cramping, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.
Hepatitis and Liver Infections Viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E) is a common liver condition requiring timely intervention to prevent severe liver damage.
Fatty Liver Disease Excess fat accumulation in the liver, often linked to obesity or alcohol consumption, can progress to cirrhosis if not managed.
Ulcers and Gastritis Stomach ulcers and gastritis often result from bacterial infections (like H. pylori) or prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Pancreatitis Inflammation of the pancreas, either acute or chronic, can cause abdominal pain and disrupt digestive enzyme production.
Liver Cirrhosis Cirrhosis involves irreversible scarring of the liver tissue, often due to chronic alcohol consumption or viral hepatitis.
Why Consult a Specialist?
Digestive and liver conditions can often manifest subtly but escalate quickly if ignored. Consulting the best gastroenterologist in Jaipur ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment tailored to your specific needs. Specialized tests like endoscopy, colonoscopy, liver function tests, and imaging help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
A gastro and liver specialist in Jaipur also helps you manage chronic conditions through lifestyle modifications, dietary guidance, and medication. Early intervention can prevent complications and improve your quality of life significantly.
How to Choose the Best Gastro Doctor in Jaipur
Experience and Expertise Look for a gastroenterologist with extensive experience in treating your specific condition. Certifications and training in advanced procedures like endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound are a plus.
Patient Reviews Patient testimonials provide insight into the doctor’s approachability, communication, and treatment effectiveness.
Availability of Advanced Facilities Choose a specialist affiliated with a hospital or clinic equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
Comprehensive Care Opt for a specialist who offers a wide range of services, including preventive screenings, dietary counseling, and minimally invasive treatments.
Convenience Accessibility, appointment scheduling, and proximity to your location in Jaipur are practical considerations.
Top-Recommended Gastroenterologists in Jaipur
Liver Specialist in Jaipur boasts a growing healthcare sector with several renowned specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology. Many of these doctors are affiliated with leading hospitals and clinics, offering comprehensive care for digestive and liver disorders.

The Role of Endoscopy in Diagnosing Stomach Ulcers and GERD
Gastrointestinal issues can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, with conditions like stomach ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) being among the most common. Gastroenterologists from SIDS Hospital, one of the best gastro hospitals in Surat, utilize endoscopy to accurately diagnose these conditions. This blog post will explore how endoscopy is used to diagnose stomach ulcers and GERD, its benefits, and what patients can expect during the procedure.
What is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the body using a long, thin tube with a small camera attached to its end. In gastroenterology, the most common type of endoscopy is called an upper endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). This procedure examines the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Diagnosing Stomach Ulcers
Stomach ulcers, also known as gastric ulcers, are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach. While blood tests and stool samples can indicate the presence of ulcers, endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis. Here’s how endoscopy helps in diagnosing stomach ulcers:
Direct visualization: The endoscope allows doctors to see the stomach lining directly, identifying ulcers, their size, location, and severity.
Biopsy capability: If an ulcer is found, the doctor can take small tissue samples (biopsies) for laboratory analysis. This helps determine the cause of the ulcer, such as H. pylori infection or cancer.
Helicobacter pylori detection: Some endoscopes are equipped with special sensors that can detect the presence of H. pylori bacteria, a common cause of ulcers, in real-time during the procedure.
Assessing healing: For patients undergoing treatment at the best hospital in Surat, follow-up endoscopies can monitor the healing process and ensure the ulcer is responding to therapy.
Diagnosing GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus. While GERD is often diagnosed based on symptoms and response to medication, endoscopy plays a vital role in certain cases:
Identifying complications: Endoscopy can reveal GERD-related complications such as esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), strictures (narrowing of the esophagus), or Barrett’s esophagus (precancerous changes in the esophageal lining).
Ruling out other conditions: Symptoms of GERD can sometimes mimic other conditions. Endoscopy helps differentiate GERD from other issues like esophageal cancer or eosinophilic esophagitis.
Assessing severity: The procedure allows doctors to grade the severity of GERD based on visible changes to the esophageal lining.
Guiding treatment: Findings from an endoscopy can help doctors performing the best laparoscopy surgery in Surat to tailor treatment plans, especially for patients with severe or complicated GERD.
Benefits of Endoscopy in Diagnosis
The best endoscopy in Surat offers several advantages in diagnosing stomach ulcers and GERD:
Accuracy: It provides a direct view of the affected areas, leading to more accurate diagnoses compared to other methods.
Minimally invasive: Unlike surgical procedures, endoscopy is minimally invasive and typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
Quick results: Doctors can often provide preliminary findings immediately after the procedure, with biopsy results available within a few days.
Therapeutic potential: In some cases, endoscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. For instance, doctors can treat bleeding ulcers or dilate strictures during the same procedure.
What to Expect During an Endoscopy
For patients undergoing an endoscopy, here’s what to expect:
Preparation: Patients are usually asked to fast for 6–8 hours before the procedure to ensure an empty stomach.
Sedation: Most patients receive a sedative to help them relax during the procedure.
The procedure: The endoscope is gently inserted through the mouth and guided down the esophagus into the stomach and duodenum. The procedure typically lasts 15–30 minutes.
Recovery: After the procedure, patients are monitored briefly as the sedative wears off. Most people can go home the same day but should arrange for someone to drive them.
Results: The best gastroenterologists in Surat usually discuss preliminary findings immediately after the procedure, with full results, including any biopsy results, available within a few days.
While endoscopy is generally safe, like all medical procedures, it carries some risks, including bleeding and perforation. However, these complications are rare, especially when performed by experienced professionals.
Conclusion
Endoscopy plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing stomach ulcers and GERD. Its ability to provide direct visualization of the upper gastrointestinal tract, coupled with the option for immediate biopsies, makes it an invaluable tool in gastroenterology. For patients experiencing persistent symptoms of these conditions, discussing the option of an endoscopy with their healthcare provider could be a significant step towards accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. As medical technology continues to advance, we can expect endoscopic techniques to become even more sophisticated, further improving our ability to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal disorders.

What is Heartburn? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment.
Heartburn is a common condition that causes a burning sensation in the chest, often extending up toward the neck and throat. Contrary to its name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. Instead, it occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. This acid reflux irritates the esophagus lining, leading to the uncomfortable feeling often described as a burning pain.
What Causes Heartburn?
The primary cause of heartburn is the weakening or malfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscle at the entrance of the stomach. When this muscle doesn’t close properly after food passes through, stomach acid can escape into the esophagus. Common triggers include:
Eating large meals or lying down immediately after a meal
Spicy or fatty foods
Caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages
Smoking
Pregnancy
Obesity
Symptoms of Heartburn
The main symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, but other symptoms can include:
A sour or bitter taste in the mouth
Difficulty swallowing
Chest pain, particularly after eating, bending over, or lying down
A chronic cough or hoarseness
When is Heartburn More Serious?
While occasional heartburn is common and usually harmless, frequent or severe episodes may indicate a more serious condition such as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), especially if it occurs more than twice a week. These conditions require medical attention as untreated GERD or GORD can lead to complications like esophageal ulcers or Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that increases the risk of esophageal cancer.
How to Treat and Prevent Heartburn
For mild, occasional heartburn, lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications can provide relief. Here are some strategies to prevent heartburn:
Eat smaller meals and avoid eating late at night
Avoid lying down immediately after eating
Cut back on trigger foods, such as spicy, fatty, or acidic foods
Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption
Maintain a healthy weight
Over-the-counter antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can neutralize stomach acid and reduce symptoms. However, if heartburn persists despite these treatments, it is important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out more serious conditions.
When to See a Doctor
If you experience heartburn more than twice a week, or if over-the-counter medications fail to relieve symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice. Additionally, if heartburn is accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, or persistent nausea, you should consult a doctor promptly, as these could be signs of GERD or another gastrointestinal issue.
Why Choose Fakeeh University Hospital for Heartburn Treatment?
By understanding the triggers and knowing when to seek medical help, you can manage heartburn effectively and avoid complications.

What Tests can be used to Diagnose and Treat Esophageal Disorders?
Esophageal disorders can significantly affect one’s quality of life. From swallowing difficulties to chronic heartburn, these issues can stem from various underlying conditions. At the Gastro, Liver & Endoscopy Center, under the expertise of Dr. Manish Gupta, we specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of esophageal disorders. In this blog, we will explore the diagnostic tests available and the treatment options that can help you regain your health and well-being.
Understanding Esophageal Disorders:
The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Disorders affecting this organ can manifest in various ways, including:
Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Esophagitis
Achalasia
Esophageal cancer
If you’re experiencing symptoms such as persistent heartburn, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing, it’s crucial to consult with a specialist. Dr. Manish Gupta, recognized as one of the best gastroenterologists in Delhi and Ghaziabad, provides comprehensive care for patients suffering from these conditions.
Diagnostic Tests for Esophageal Disorders:
Accurate diagnosis is key to effective treatment. Here are some common tests that Dr. Gupta may recommend:
1. Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy - EGD):
This procedure involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) through the mouth and into the esophagus. It allows Dr. Gupta to visually inspect the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. During the procedure, he can also take biopsies if necessary. This is essential for diagnosing conditions like esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, and cancer.
2. Barium Swallow Study:
In this X-ray examination, the patient swallows a barium solution that coats the esophagus, making it visible on X-ray images. This test helps identify abnormalities in the structure and function of the esophagus, such as strictures, blockages, or issues with motility.
3. Esophageal Manometry:
This test measures the pressure and coordination of the esophageal muscles. It is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions like achalasia and other motility disorders. By understanding how the esophagus functions during swallowing, Dr. Gupta can tailor an appropriate treatment plan.
4. 24-Hour pH Monitoring:
This test involves placing a small device in the esophagus to measure the acidity level over a 24-hour period. It is crucial for diagnosing GERD. Patients may keep a diary of symptoms to correlate them with pH levels, helping Dr. Gupta evaluate the severity of acid reflux.
5. Esophageal Ultrasound:
For certain conditions, an ultrasound may be used to assess the depth of tumors or the involvement of surrounding tissues. This test can provide valuable information for planning further treatment, especially if cancer is suspected.
Treatment Options for Esophageal Disorders:
Once a diagnosis is made, treatment can begin. Dr. Gupta offers a variety of treatment options tailored to each patient’s specific needs:
1. Lifestyle Modifications:
For many esophageal disorders, particularly GERD, lifestyle changes can significantly alleviate symptoms. Recommendations may include:
Eating smaller, more frequent meals
Avoiding trigger foods (spicy, acidic, or fatty foods)
Elevating the head of the bed to prevent nighttime reflux
Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption
2. Medications:
Depending on the condition, various medications can be prescribed, such as:
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid
H2-receptor antagonists for less severe acid reflux
Antacids for immediate relief of symptoms
Prokinetic agents to improve esophageal motility in conditions like gastroparesis
3. Endoscopic Procedures:
For certain conditions, endoscopic procedures can be performed to treat problems directly:
Dilation for strictures or narrowing of the esophagus
Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for early-stage cancers
Radiofrequency ablation for Barrett's esophagus
4. Surgery:
In cases where other treatments are ineffective, surgical options may be considered. Dr. Gupta may recommend procedures such as:
Fundoplication for severe GERD
Esophagectomy for cancer

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Digestive Issues: What You Should Know
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has revolutionized the way various digestive issues are treated, offering significant benefits over traditional surgical methods. For individuals suffering from gastrointestinal conditions, understanding the advantages of this technique is crucial. This article will provide key insights into minimally invasive surgery for digestive issues, particularly in the context of services offered by a gi surgeon in Jaipur, such as Dr. Kapileshwer Vijay, at his renowned gastro clinic.
What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) involves performing operations through small incisions, often with the aid of advanced technology like laparoscopes or robotic systems. In contrast to open surgery, which requires large incisions and extended recovery times, MIS focuses on minimizing physical trauma to the body. This approach is widely used in treating gastrointestinal issues such as gallbladder disease, hernias, acid reflux (GERD), colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Why Choose Minimally Invasive Surgery?
There are several advantages to opting for minimally invasive surgery for digestive problems:
Smaller Incisions: Traditional open surgeries involve large incisions, which can lead to more pain and scarring. With MIS, incisions are typically less than an inch, reducing scarring and allowing for quicker healing.
Faster Recovery: Patients who undergo minimally invasive procedures generally experience quicker recovery times. This means less time in the hospital and a faster return to normal daily activities.
Reduced Pain and Discomfort: Smaller incisions result in less postoperative pain. This often leads to reduced reliance on pain medication, which is beneficial for patients seeking quicker recovery.
Lower Risk of Infection: Due to smaller incisions, there is a lower risk of infections compared to traditional surgery. This helps in minimizing postoperative complications and leads to a smoother recovery.
Precision and Accuracy: The use of advanced tools, such as laparoscopes, allows surgeons to operate with greater precision. For example, Dr. Kapileshwer Vijay, a well-known gastro surgeon in Jaipur, specializes in using the latest technology to ensure optimal outcomes for his patients at his gastro clinic.
Types of Digestive Issues Treated with MIS
Minimally invasive surgery is highly effective in treating a range of digestive conditions. Some common procedures include:
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This surgery involves the removal of the gallbladder, often due to gallstones. It’s performed through a few small incisions, reducing recovery time and post-op pain.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: MIS is widely used to treat hernias, ensuring faster recovery and minimizing the risk of recurrence.
Fundoplication for GERD: For individuals with severe acid reflux, fundoplication tightens the esophageal valve to prevent acid from flowing back into the esophagus. This surgery is highly effective and performed with minimal downtime.
Colorectal Surgery: MIS is increasingly used for treating colon and rectal cancers, allowing for precise removal of tumors with less trauma to the patient.
The Role of a Gastro Surgeon in Jaipur
If you're seeking minimally invasive treatment for digestive issues, consulting an experienced gastro surgeon in Jaipur, like Dr. Kapileshwer Vijay, is essential. With years of expertise in MIS techniques, Dr. Vijay offers tailored solutions for each patient at his well-equipped gastro clinic. His emphasis on patient care, advanced technology, and minimally invasive approaches ensures that patients receive top-notch treatment while minimizing discomfort and recovery times.
Conclusion
Minimally invasive surgery is an excellent option for individuals dealing with digestive issues, offering numerous advantages such as faster recovery, less pain, and smaller incisions. For those in Jaipur, consulting a skilled specialist like Dr. Kapileshwer Vijay at his gastro clinic can provide the best care and treatment outcomes. If you're considering surgery for any gastrointestinal condition, it’s worth exploring the benefits of MIS to ensure a quicker and smoother recovery journey.

Signs You Might Have a Serious Gastro Problem
Digestive issues are common, but how do you know when your stomach troubles require medical attention? While occasional bloating, indigestion, or discomfort may be harmless, persistent or severe symptoms could signal a more serious gastrointestinal problem. Early detection and intervention are crucial for managing these conditions effectively. If you're experiencing any of the following signs, it may be time to consult a Gastroenterologist in Gurgaon.
1. Persistent Abdominal Pain
Occasional stomach cramps are normal, but persistent or intense abdominal pain should not be ignored. This can indicate underlying conditions such as ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or even inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. If the pain is sharp, severe, or localized to one area of your abdomen, especially if accompanied by nausea or vomiting, it's best to consult a stomach doctor in Gurgaon for a thorough evaluation.
2. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing weight without making changes to your diet or exercise routine could be a red flag for gastrointestinal issues. Conditions such as celiac disease, peptic ulcers, or even more serious concerns like stomach cancer could be behind this unexplained weight loss. A Gastroenterologist in Gurgaon will be able to run the necessary tests to determine the cause and provide appropriate treatment options.
3. Frequent Heartburn or Acid Reflux
Experiencing heartburn occasionally is normal, especially after eating spicy or fatty foods. However, if heartburn or acid reflux becomes a regular occurrence, it could indicate a more severe condition, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Chronic GERD can damage the esophagus and lead to complications if not managed correctly.
4. Changes in Bowel Habits
Frequent diarrhea, constipation, or noticeable changes in the consistency of your stool could signal a serious gastrointestinal problem. Conditions like IBS, diverticulitis, or even colon cancer can present through abnormal bowel habits.
5. Bloating and Excessive Gas
While occasional bloating or gas is common after eating certain foods, excessive or persistent bloating can indicate a more serious issue like food intolerances (such as lactose intolerance) or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). If bloating and gas are accompanied by other symptoms like pain or changes in bowel habits, it's wise to consult a Gastroenterologist to rule out more severe conditions.
6. Difficulty Swallowing
Difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia, could be a symptom of a gastrointestinal problem such as GERD or esophageal motility disorders. In some cases, it could be a sign of something more concerning, like esophageal cancer. If you frequently experience pain or difficulty when swallowing, it’s important to see a stomach doctor in Gurgaon for further evaluation.
7. Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting that persist for days or weeks without an apparent cause may indicate a serious digestive problem. This could be related to stomach ulcers, infections, or even conditions affecting other parts of the digestive system, like the liver or pancreas.

Endoscopic Solutions for GERD: Procedures and Patient Benefits
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common condition that affects many adults worldwide. It occurs when the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus due to a malfunctioning valve that normally keeps them separate. This backflow, or reflux, often leads to uncomfortable symptoms such as a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, and continuous coughing.
While lifestyle changes and medications are usually the first line of treatment, endoscopic solutions have appeared as effective options for those who don’t respond well to traditional methods. These minimally invasive techniques offer noteworthy benefits, providing relief without the need for major surgery. In this article, we will explore the various endoscopic solutions for GERD suggested by a gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad, their procedures, and the benefits they offer to patients. Let’s take a look in depth!
Symptoms Of GERD:
The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn. This is an uncomfortable burning sensation felt in the middle of the upper abdomen or lower chest. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and regurgitation of fluid into the esophagus. In some cases, fluid may even reflux into the mouth. People with GERD also may develop other atypical (extraesophageal) symptoms such as hoarseness, throat-clearing, sore throat, wheezing, chronic cough, and even asthma.
Causes Of GERD:
GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — a muscle that acts as a valve between the esophagus and stomach — doesn’t close properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. This malfunction can be due to a weak LES, lifestyle factors like obesity, smoking, alcohol, high-fat diets, or carbonated drinks, and conditions like a hiatal hernia. Reduced acid release from the esophagus due to damage or motility issues can also worsen GERD symptoms.
Traditional Treatment Methods of GERD by a gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad
Most people with GERD start with lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments, weight loss, and quitting smoking. Medications like antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are also commonly used to reduce stomach acid production and heal the esophagus lining. However, some patients do not find sufficient relief from these methods or may experience side effects from long-term medication use. According to a gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad, for these people, endoscopic solutions can be a valuable option.
Endoscopic Solutions for GERD
Endoscopic treatments for GERD are minimally invasive methods that include the use of an endoscope by a gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad — a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light at its tip. This tube is inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus, allowing a gastro doctor in Ahmedabad to see inside and perform specific treatments. The primary endoscopic options for GERD include:
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF):
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) is a process that recreates the valve between the esophagus and the stomach, thereby controlling acid reflux. The TIF process is performed through the mouth using a specialised device attached to an endoscope. It folds and fastens the stomach tissue around the LES, creating a new valve structure.
Procedure: The patient is under general anaesthesia. The endoscope with the attached device is inserted through the mouth, and the gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad reshapes the upper part of the stomach to form a more effective valve mechanism.
Benefits: TIF offers effective relief from GERD symptoms with minimal discomfort. Since the procedure is with no incision, there is no visible scarring, and recovery time is relatively short. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.
Stretta Therapy:
Stretta therapy is another endoscopic treatment that includes giving radiofrequency energy to the muscles around the LES. This energy causes the muscles to thicken and strengthen, reducing the frequency of reflux outbreaks.
Procedure: The procedure takes about 60 minutes and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. A special catheter with electrodes is inserted through the endoscope, and controlled radiofrequency waves are delivered to the LES and the upper part of the stomach.
Benefits: Stretta therapy is a non-surgical option that improves GERD symptoms by enhancing the function of the LES. It does not require any incisions, and patients can return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure. Studies have shown that Stretta can greatly reduce the need for GERD medications over time.
Endoscopic Suturing:
Endoscopic suturing, or Endoluminal Gastroplication, includes placing stitches in the stomach near the LES to produce a barrier that stops acid reflux.
Procedure: Using an endoscope equipped with a suturing device, the gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad puts several stitches at strategic points near the LES to support the valve mechanism.
Benefits: This procedure strengthens the natural barrier between the esophagus and stomach, reducing reflux. It is a minimally invasive choice with a quick recovery time and can be quite effective for patients with average GERD symptoms.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA):
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is mainly used for patients with Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can develop due to chronic GERD. However, it also has a role in treating GERD itself by targeting the damaged esophageal lining.
Procedure: During the procedure, an endoscope equipped with a radiofrequency ablation catheter is used to deliver controlled heat to the esophageal lining, removing abnormal cells and allowing normal cells to regenerate.
Benefits: RFA is highly effective in reducing the risk of esophageal cancer in patients with Barrett’s esophagus. It can also improve GERD symptoms by encouraging the regeneration of healthy tissue.
Patient Benefits of Endoscopic Solutions
Endoscopic treatments for GERD offer several advantages over traditional surgical options, making them attractive choices for many patients:
Minimally Invasive
Endoscopic procedures do not require large incisions, reducing the risk of infection, bleeding, and other difficulties linked with traditional surgery. Patients experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.
Lower Risk of Complications
Compared to open or laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic procedures have a lower risk of complications such as postoperative pain, hernia, or sticking. The reduced need for general anaesthesia also minimises associated risks, especially for older or medically compromised patients.
Quick Recovery Time
Most endoscopic treatments are performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay. Patients can usually return to normal activities within a few days, unlike surgical patients, who may need weeks to recover fully.
Effective Symptom Relief
Studies have shown that endoscopic treatments can provide effective and sustained relief from GERD symptoms. Many patients report a marked reduction in heartburn, regurgitation, and reliance on medications.
No Visible Scarring
Since these procedures are performed using an endoscope inserted through the mouth, there are no external cuts or scars, which is aesthetically preferable for many patients.
Choosing the Right Endoscopic Solution
The choice of an endoscopic solution depends on various factors, including the severity of GERD, the patient’s overall health, and the presence of any complications such as Barrett’s esophagus. A gastro surgeon in Ahmedabad will assess the patient’s condition and recommend the most suitable treatment option based on their specific needs.
Wrapping Up:
In conclusion, endoscopic solutions for GERD define a notable improvement in the management of this chronic condition. By offering minimally invasive procedures that effectively reduce symptoms and improve quality of life, these treatments provide a valuable option for surgery for many patients. If you or a loved one is struggling with GERD, consulting with a gastroenterologist in Ahmedabad can help determine if an endoscopic procedure is the right option for you. By staying informed about the latest treatment options, patients can take proactive steps toward managing GERD and leading healthier, more comfortable lives.
